Represented in key Asian markets by Marine Italia, Azimut has already secured impressive sales of its upcoming flagship superyacht.Ā

Ā

Azimut has unveiled details of its Grande 44M, its largest yacht to date and almost 6m longer than its existing flagship, the Grande Trideck. Five units were sold in advance of Grande 44M’s announcement in late March, with the model’s world premiere scheduled to be held at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival.

Ā

Marco Valle, Azimut-Benetti Group’s CEO, said: ā€œGrande 44M is proof that true innovation anticipates what owners really desire. This is confirmed by the five units sold even before the official presentation of the project, all bought by Azimut owners who understand the shipyard’s values and wish to grow with us.ā€

Ā

A new addition to the Italian builder’s fleet of ā€˜Low Emission Yachts’, the Grande 44M features exterior styling by regular collaborator Alberto Mancini and interiors by m²atelier, which has also worked with the shipyard on its upcoming Grande 30M, expected to debut in 2025.

Ā

Distinctive features include the helm station on the top deck, which allows the upper deck to be used as an owner’s deck including a forward master suite with almost 2m-long windows on either side. Alternatively, the room can be fitted out as a media suite for guests or a dining area. Forward is an outdoor lounge area with a small firepit, offering a cosy space to enjoy the sun set over the water.

Ā

On the aft main deck, the Grande 44M proposes Azimut’s mezzanine deck with sea view terrace that was central to the success of the Grande Trideck. On the Grande 44M, this three-sided ā€˜stage overlooking the sea’ also includes a see-through pool, ā€œwith its plays on transparency that establish continuous contact with the water and generate reflections that give the beach club an even more magical feelā€, Azimut states.

Ā

Grande 44M is also the flagship of the Azimut’s family of Low Emission Yachts, models that offer a reduction of 20-30 per cent in emissions compared to more traditional motor yachts of the same size. The innovative naval platform of Grande 44M is based on a Dual Mode hull, the introduction of the Hull VaneĀ® foil technology and the Mild Hybrid Plus Zero Emission Hotel Mode system.

Ā

Azimut, Azimut-Benetti, R&D, Grande 44M, Grande Trideck, Grand 30M, Alberto Mancini, Marco Valle, m²atelier, Dual Mode hull, Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture, PLANA, Hull Vane, Zero Emission Hotel Mode, Mild Hybrid Plus, Asea Nautica

Ā

The Dual Mode hull, developed by Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture (PLANA) and Azimut’s R&D department, represents the union of two types of conventional hulls. The bow section is typical for fast displacement boats, while from midships to the stern has a chine commonly found on planing hulls. The design results in a hull that allows a considerable reduction in fuel consumption and emissions at every speed range.

Ā

Foil technology is being installed for the first time on an Azimut yacht due to a collaboration between Dutch company Hull Vane and Azimut-Benetti Group’s R&D department. The Hull VaneĀ® carbon wing fitted to the stern of the Grande 44M can suppress the stern wave and generate forward thrust, providing further reduction in overall drag as well as damping of pitch, sway and roll during navigation.

Ā

Ā

The Grande 44M is Azimut’s sixth model that can be fitted with a Zero Emission Hotel Mode system, making it possible to stay at anchor from four-eight hours with the generators off. On the Grande 44M, this technology achieves maximum efficiency in combination with the Mild Hybrid Plus system, a new level of electrification developed by Azimut-Benetti Group in partnership with Asea Nautica.

Ā

According to Azimut, the Mild Hybrid Plus Zero Emission Hotel Mode system is the only solution today that makes it possible to cruise with the generators off and all loads connected, as well as producing a surplus of energy used to recharge the battery pack.

Building on the innovative features of the popular 52Steel, Sanlorenzo’s new 57Steel offers over twice the volume, novel deck arrangements and customised interiors, as shown on Virtuosity.

Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project drew the 57Steel

Ā

Combining an enormous volume with a 56.5m LOA and perfectly balanced proportions – as well as thoughtful customisations that set her apart from her sisters in the series – Virtuosity is the second hull in the new 57Steel range from Sanlorenzo.

Ā

Creating the new 57Steel line for Sanlorenzo was a careful balancing act between volume, length and proportions. The Italian builder sought to expand its range of steel-hulled superyachts with an offering that provided a generous volume exceeding 1,000GT without reaching an excessive length, and without looking too stocky or top heavy.

Ā

Ferruccio Rossi, Group General Manager and President of Sanlorenzo Superyacht, says: ā€œOne of the 57Steel’s strengths lies precisely in being able to provide extraordinary volumes and liveable spaces, while staying below 60m in length and maintaining a perfect balance in proportions.ā€

Ā

Sanlorenzo, 57Steel, 52Steel, Lissoni & Partners, Piero Lissoni, Zuccon International Project, Bernardo Zuccon, Virtuosity, Ferruccio RossiVirtuosity’s aft decks include a main-deck pool, alfresco dining and an outdoor party zone

Ā

It was a challenging brief for the yacht’s designer, but fortunately one that it was prepared for, as Zuccon International Project is one of Sanlorenzo’s longtime collaborators.

Ā

ā€œMy design has become almost second nature when it comes to drawing for Sanlorenzo,ā€ Bernardo Zuccon says. ā€œThe integration and synergy with the shipyard’s style have made it almost spontaneous for me to incorporate the Sanlorenzo DNA into new designs. Starting from a general language, I introduced stylistic elements and details to make the 57Steel an extremely recognisable yacht.ā€

Ā

STYLED FOR THE OWNER

Zuccon sought to create a timeless exterior style that would be recognisable as part of the Sanlorenzo family while standing out among the current fleet. The designer achieved this with specific design elements, such as the signature handrails on the main and upper deck.

Ā

Zuccon is responsible for the exteriors of most Sanlorenzo yachts

Ā

In a different colour from the rest of the all-white Virtuosity, the dark-grey handrails lead the eye from their starting point aft to the next deck up. The handrails don’t merely end at the top of the bulwark, but continue at a 45-degree slope, connecting to the superstructure above. This seemingly subtle styling cue creates a sense of dynamism and forward motion.

Ā

Virtuosity was preceded by the first 57Steel, Alma. It’s obvious that the two are sisters, but Virtuosity stands out from grey-hulled Alma with a nearly all-white hull and superstructure.

Ā

Ā

Rossi says: ā€œVirtuosity flaunts a unique colour, giving the line a sportier appearance, as wished by the client. Another distinctive external element is the foredeck private pool on Virtuosity’s upper deck, located in front of the owner’s cabin.ā€ Such personalisation speaks to Sanlorenzo’s quest, and company motto, to create ā€˜made to measure’ yachts.

Ā

DIFFERENT LEVEL

To strike a proper proportional balance in the 57Steel series, the yacht’s general arrangement was pored over and revised from what you might typically expect in a yacht of similar length. An innovative layout that bucks tradition was conceived.

Ā

Ā

The wheelhouse area, normally found forward on the upper deck, was moved up one level. Instead of an entirely open sun deck, this arrangement places the enclosed bridge area forward on the top deck. This is set forward of a chart room and captain’s cabin, while a corridor leads to a small interior lounge/DJ area that opens out onto an aft deck exterior party area.

Ā

ā€œIt’s a real bridge deck, like those found on much larger yachts, which made it possible to utilise the upper deck in a different way,ā€ Rossi says.

Ā

A higher vantage point for the bridge is not only a benefit to the captain, but this shakeup in the general arrangement has allowed the upper deck to host a sprawling 54sqm owner’s suite like you might find on a yacht with a longer LOA.

Ā

The 580sqft owner’s suite on the upper deck looks out onto an enormous foredeck that includes a private pool

Ā

An owner’s office and walk-in dressing room at the entrance to the suite lead into the forward-facing bedroom. Surrounded by windows and set at a lofty height, this upper-deck haven enjoys expansive views, which can be further appreciated by stepping outside onto the connected private forward deck lounge with a swimming pool.

Ā

Zuccon says: ā€œIt’s challenging to pinpoint a single favourite space on board Virtuosity, but considering the typological characteristics of the yacht, the owner’s cabin on the upper deck with its exclusive external deck is perhaps the most fascinating space on board.ā€

Ā

One of the four guest cabins on the lower deck

Ā

On the main deck forward is a full-beam stateroom that would make for an enviable VIP cabin or a worthy second owner’s suite for dual charterers. A further four cabins are found on the lower deck below, including two doubles and two twin cabins, one of which can serve as a staff cabin.

Ā

STEPPING UP CUSTOMISATION

Though the build of Virtuosity began on spec, an owner was found only months after beginning carpentry work, allowing the clients to put their personal stamp on the vessel. Rossi explains: ā€œOne of the most interesting challenges was meeting the clients’ request for a ā€˜masterpiece’ within the boat, a situation that could create astonishment, a wow effect.ā€

Ā

Sanlorenzo, 57Steel, 52Steel, Lissoni & Partners, Piero Lissoni, Zuccon International Project, Bernardo Zuccon, Virtuosity, Ferruccio Rossi

The showpiece steel-and-aluminum staircase winds up and down all four decks

Ā

Lissoni & Partners created Virtuosity’s minimal yet chic interior, which includes a wow-feature of a staircase at its core. Designer Piero Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, is known for his utterly unique, architectural staircases, and the one found on Virtuosity is no exception. A study in organic shapes, this curvaceous staircase is certainly the piece de resistance that it set out to be.

Ā

ā€œI couldn’t resist adding one of my staircases,ā€ Lissoni admits. ā€œIt’s not a simple staircase; it belongs to a kind of twilight zone, something in-between different places. I hope that the owners keep on going up and down these stairs as if they were in a dream.ā€

Ā

The staircase, which features a steel and aluminum structure, spans all four decks, winding around itself and creating unprecedented perspectives in terms of pathways and passages. Natural light filters in through a glass skylight above, creating an interplay of light and shadows.

Ā

Sanlorenzo, 57Steel, 52Steel, Lissoni & Partners, Piero Lissoni, Zuccon International Project, Bernardo Zuccon, Virtuosity, Ferruccio Rossi

The lower deck of Virtuosity includes a gym, as well as the beach club

Ā

The challenge lay in achieving a sense of weightlessness and transparency while ensuring structural integrity. Precision engineering and innovative construction methods, overseen by Lissoni’s team, were employed to bring this exceptional staircase to life.

Ā

Rossi says: ā€œIt was a stimulating challenge not only from a formal and stylistic perspective but also from an engineering and craftsmanship standpoint due to the complexities arising from placing such a sculptural staircase in such a compact space with a complex structure.ā€

Ā

The clients are also very interested in onboard technology, particularly in audio/video systems, so Virtuosity has a DJ area at the aft of her bridge deck with a space for DJ decks and a bar, creating a dedicated space for celebrations. The party space, along with a main-deck pool area and a huge beach club on the lower deck, proves that Virtuosity is all about entertainment.

Ā

The upper-deck saloon includes an enormous sofa facing a large TV screen

Ā

Building a superyacht on spec can be a gamble, but it’s one that paid off for Sanlorenzo. Three more units of the 57Steel range are already in production. And Zuccon says that the owner’s satisfaction with Virtuosity has led to an ongoing collaboration on an even larger project.

Ā

The word Virtuosity, of course, means an impressive skill in an artistic pursuit, and it could be said that the yard and designers have showcased great virtuosity befitting of the yacht’s name in the creation of this well-balanced superyacht.

Damen Yachting has again partnered with Dutch studio Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture to further develop the exterior lines of the Xplorer 80, a follow-up to the SeaXplorer 77.

Ā

While the original SeaXplorer exterior DNA is still recognisable through the inclusion of features such as the signature bow, observation lounge, enclosed wheelhouse and crow’s nest, the more modernised, refined styling ā€œbrings an elegant and luxurious look to this very capable and robust yachtā€, according to Damen Yachting.

Ā

Enrique Tintore, Xplorer Design Manager, said: ā€œThe way the Xplorer has been designed allows for a high level of flexibility to suit any extreme environment or refined landscape. If a helicopter isn’t essential for you, we’ve got many other options for that space. Need a conference room or a seventh guest cabin? Or a separate gym and a high-spec laboratory? We can make that happen.ā€

Among the configuration options on offer, owners can opt, for example, between a hidden heli hangar and refuelling facilities, a gym and wellness setup, a twin-tender garage setup, a fully-equipped dive centre, or a wall-to-wall lounge club.

Ā

Based around the same technical platform, Damen Yachting can also propose alternative exterior designs by Espen Ƙino, Harrison Eidsgaard and Azure Yacht Design, as well as alternative interior concepts by Winch Design and Reymond Langton.

Ā

Today’s yachts are so luxurious that a jacuzzi won’t even get a mention, as it’s long since considered a basic. However, it’s not only a yacht’s graceful form and grand furnishings that fascinate. There’s also the propulsion and technical systems, which should be harmonised to maximise performance.

Ā

This is why Rolls-Royce provides all the systems needed to power a yacht, with all of them at the top end of the performance spectrum.

Ā

In line with its ā€˜Bridge to Propeller’ strategy for maritime applications, the business unit Power Systems of Rolls-Royce, mtu propulsion solutions for yachts will include fully integrated bridge and automation systems, engines and highly efficient Pod propulsion, with all interplaying perfectly to assure efficiency.

Ā

Denise Kurtulus, Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: ā€œThe more integrated your propulsion system is, the easier it is to adjust the interplay between the components, best satisfying whatever demands are being made on operation of the vessel.

Ā

ā€œUsing fully integrated systems, we can best meet the different requirements of our customers when operating a vessel. We’re already using artificial intelligence for this purpose, and the trend is increasing.ā€

Ocean Alexander’s 35R can be fitted with twin mtu engines

Ā

Many of the leading yacht builders in Asia and around the world use mtu engines. Ocean Alexander and Horizon are two of the region’s heavyweights, featuring regularly in the Global Order Book for superyachts. Both Kaohsiung shipyards regularly use mtu across many of their models and benefit from the support and network of Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems under Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia in Singapore.

Ā

Ocean Alexander’s 35R, the 116ft flagship of its Revolution series, can be fitted with mtu’s 2,600bhp 16V 2000 M96L engines for a top speed of 24 knots. Horizon’s FD80, the most successful model in the builder’s popular high-volume fast displacement series, is available with twin 1,600bhp 10V 2000 M96L engines.

Ā

Winnie Huang, Manager of Ocean Alexander, added: ā€œmtu engines live up to their reputation for performance and reliability, while we also benefit from fast support and good service from the Rolls-Royce team that looks after Asia.ā€

Ā

FULLY INTEGRATED BRIDGE

Last September, Rolls-Royce presented its expanded bridge-to-propeller portfolio at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show. The technology includes new bridge and automation solutions.

Ā

A fully integrated bridge is a central point of interaction for the captain, where not only all the data from the propulsion system is collected but also the operating data from all the ship’s auxiliary and navigation equipment can be collected and the equipment operated.

Ā

ā€œThe complexity of on-board systems is increasing due to different customer requirements and new regulations, with hybrid and electric propulsion systems, exhaust after-treatment systems, alternative fuels and so on,ā€ Kurtulus said.

Ā

ā€œHowever, our integrated bridge represents a perfect infrastructure, providing a single point of access to all information in a structured and efficient way. In the future, the same infrastructure will host autonomous functions, equipment health management (vessel monitoring systems) from the mtu NautIQ portfolio, and other data-driven functions.ā€

Ā

The mtu NautIQ Bridge unites on a single platform all the subsystems needed for monitoring, controlling and steering the vessel. It was developed by Rolls-Royce engineers in collaboration with Team Italia, which became part of the Rolls-Royce group in July 2023.

Ā

Massimo Minnella, who founded Team Italia with Daniele Ceccanti, said: ā€œWe will launch innovative products for the next generation of yachts. They will have a much wider range of functions in automation and control.ā€

Ā

ACCOMMODATING SUSTAINABLE FUELS

At the core of the mtu yacht offering are the mtu Series 2000 and 4000 yacht engines, now approved for operation with EN15940 synthetic diesel fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).

Ā

Kurtulus said: ā€œWe see HVO as a very effective sustainable solution because the fuel is already available. For the future, we see e-methanol as the most promising marine fuel. With ā€˜green’ methanol from renewable energies, CO2-neutral yacht operation is possible.

Ā

Horizon’s popular FD80 can be fitted with two mtu 10V 2000 M96L engines

Ā

ā€œIn addition, harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulates can be significantly reduced. Compared to the other sustainable fuels hydrogen, methane and ammonia, methanol has the highest energy density, considering the tank system.ā€

Ā

The main yacht engines are also available with exhaust aftertreatment systems for IMO III-regulated areas, while Rolls-Royce is currently developing methanol propulsion solutions for yachts and workboats.

Ā

Within the publicly funded MeOHmare project, Rolls-Royce is currently focusing on single-fuel technology and will be testing it on the single-cylinder test bed and the full-engine test bed in the coming years. The company is also testing dual-fuel solutions.

Ā

POD PROPULSION, HYBRID SYSTEMS

On the propeller side, Rolls-Royce is expanding its portfolio with fuel-efficient and particularly manoeuvrable pod propulsion systems. For this purpose, the company is cooperating with ZF and will offer high-efficiency propulsion systems based on the ZF Pod 4600 and mtu Series 2000 engines in the power range up to 1,250kW (1,700bhp).

Ā

Rolls-Royce’s bridge-to-propeller portfolio also includes mtu hybrid solutions. Enabling quiet manoeuvring in port and operating at anchor without climate-damaging exhaust gases, the mtu Hybrid PropulsionPack offers a propulsion solution that enables pure battery-electric operation for a period. The low engine noise and lack of vibration provide even more comfort on board.

Ā

Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia, Singapore, Bridge to Propeller, mtu, Nicola Camuffo, Denise Kurtulus, Massimo Minnella, Team Italia Marine, ZF, Ocean Alexander, 35R, Horizon, FD80, Global Order Book, bridge, automation, engines, Pod, propulsion, Winnie Huang, Chew Xiang Yu

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and ZF are expanding their partnership to include pod propulsion packages

Ā

The mtu Hybrid PropulsionPack integrates the mtu diesel engines with electric propulsion modules, batteries, gearbox, control and monitoring systems and other electronic components. To ensure the optimum propulsion solution for each type of ship, Rolls-Royce offers a modular kit with standardised components.

Ā

Safety, environmental protection, performance, reliability and comfort are the most important aspects when operating a yacht and for many leading shipyards, mtu will remain the go-to solution for all propulsion needs.

Ā

ā€œBasically, mtu engines are top quality, with a beautiful yet practical design,ā€ said Morris Tseng, Manager of the Horizon shipyard. ā€œYacht owners benefit from the combination of high performance and efficiency in addition to the comfort and luxury of silent, low-vibration cruising.ā€

Ā

The Rolls-Royce team in Singapore stands ready to support the bridge-to-propeller portfolio within the Asia region.

Ā

ā€œWith a long-standing history in the APAC region and commitment to excellence, the team in Asia fully prepared to support the expanded Bridge-to-Propeller portfolio,ā€ said Chew Xiang Yu, Director, Marine APAC, Rolls-Royce Power Systems. ā€œWe are dedicated to meeting our customers’ bespoke requirements with service and quality.ā€

How will yachting fare as more than 64 countries and the European Union head to the polls in 2024?

Ā

Fraser, Mark Duncan, superyachts, YACHT STYLE

Ā

In his Column for YACHT STYLE Issue 76, Mark Duncan, Fraser’s Director of Marketing & Business Development, commented on the potential impact of this year’s elections throughout Europe on yachting.

Ā

ā€œFew factors impact discretionary spend more than uncertainty,ā€ Duncan wrote. ā€œBut if global charter and sales data trends show anything, it has to be the relatively light impact that elections and most macroeconomic factors have on overall client demand for quality time away from increasing noise. And yachting offers that more than anything else today.ā€

Ā

Fraser, Mark Duncan, superyachts, YACHT STYLE

Ā

With sales of superyachts in 2023 finishing 33 per cent up on the average for the last 14 years and charter demand continuing to outpace pre-Covid numbers, far from declining, it seems the need to cocoon with loved ones and friends becomes even more precious.

Ā

ā€œAs we enter the world’s biggest election year ever, with perhaps the exception of the 24-30m sector – the entry level to the superyacht arena – we anticipate a year of continued strong demand albeit with some insightful navigation,ā€ Duncan concluded.

You left Doha to come back to Malaysia in 2023. Clue us in to your experience in hospitality.

Hospitality remains a very competitive industry and our guests continue to evolve at the same time in terms of their needs and wants.

How does it feel being back at the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur after your first job two decades ago?

It feels great to be back in Malaysia after a long time and I will always reflect fondly on my experience in Kuala Lumpur from March 1999 to October 2005. This hotel holds a very special place in my heart.

Mandarin Oriental, Kuala LumpurMandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur facade at night

How have you seen Kuala Lumpur evolve over the years?

It is almost a completely different city from when I was working here back in the early 2000s. From my perspective, it has changed and matured in the sense that there are a lot of new buildings, hotels, people, and of course, free-standing restaurants.

Mandarin Oriental, Kuala LumpurThe Royal Suite’s Living Room at dusk

What is the DNA of the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur hotel and how does it differentiate itself from other high-end hotels in the capital city?

The DNA of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur will always be steeped in class and high-quality service. With the increasing standard of service across the industry, it is important that we maintain the way we do things in the hotel.

What do guests love most at the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur?

Our guests always appreciate the prestige and recognition that staying here brings. We reciprocate this by ensuring that all their needs are met and that they are kept happy regardless of if they are staying for one night or more. Therefore, everything we do must revolve around an experience that cannot be matched. If we are able to give guests this experience, they will continue to appreciate what we do for them.

For business needs, we are strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur where several key businesses are. It is also conveniently located next to venues like KLCC Convention Centre, the PETRONAS Twin Towers, and many luxury branded shops. We also have the largest Club Lounge in Kuala Lumpur. Our MO Club Lounge is an ideal place for guests who want a relaxing and quiet space to work. It also offers one meeting room as well as a boardroom for bigger groups. These spaces can be used for private discussions, presentations and more. At the same time, the 270-degree view of the Kuala Lumpur skyline also provides a stunning backdrop for work or casual discussions. Our dedicated colleagues are always on standby to cater to guest needs whether it’s a simple cup of coffee or a meal.

For leisure, we have many options such as an award-winning spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, Peter Burwash International certified tennis courts, an infinity pool overlooking KLCC Park, a well-equipped fitness centre and many top dining outlets.

All these make Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur more of an urban resort as opposed to the more traditional business hotel.

Mandarin Oriental, Kuala LumpurThe Mandarin Cake Shop

Your hotel’s durian pancake at the Lai Po Heen Chinese restaurant has become something of a culinarily icon. Are these among your personal favourites?

To be honest, I’m not a fan of durian, but the pancakes are decadent. However, I do enjoy sweets once in a while.

Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO, SUTL Group

Ā

Looking back, what was the response to the first Singapore Yachting Festival in April 2023, which ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove hosted following a four-year break from boat shows in Singapore?

The turnout for the four-day event was positive, with more than 9,500 visitors in attendance. A total of 50 boats were showcased, with 54 exhibitors participating. The high-tech water toys proved to be a major attraction, with numerous adventurous attendees trying out the electric surfboards, while others enjoyed drinks and relaxing on the floating lounge. The second edition will be held from April 25-28, 2024.

Ā

As owner of the ONE°15 Marina brand, why did SUTL decide to acquire the Singapore Yachting Festival?

Since 2011, ONE°15 Marina has consistently been the preferred venue for yacht exhibitions in Singapore. The success of these events has been propelled by the marina’s prestige, expertise and hospitality.

Tay with Thien Kwee Eng, CEO of Sentosa Development Corporation, and Wade Pearce of SG Marine Guide at last year’s Singapore Yachting Festival

Ā

This synergy between the venue and the event has become so evident that it’s a natural progression for the marina to assume ownership of the Singapore Yachting Festival under the ONE15 Events Management entity, guiding the show’s continuous growth and development.

Ā

In terms of participation, the event is now managed by ONE°15 Marina’s in-house team, ensuring a commitment to quality and high standards. Our aim is to enhance the festival experience and introduce Singaporeans and our neighbouring communities to the yachting lifestyle and culture, since more people are increasingly embracing boating and engaging in day trips on the water.

Ā

ONE°15’s vision is to be more than just a marina brand. The brand aims to deliver an unrivalled waterfront lifestyle. I believe the Singapore Yachting Festival provides us with the perfect platform to deliver this experience, not only to our members but to the wider community interested in the waterfront experience.

The Singapore Yachting Festival has been acquired by ONE15 Events Management

Ā

Taking ownership of the event gives us full control over its curation, enabling us to make adjustments that enhance the product to align with the changing demands of the intended demographic.

Ā

Can you explain the difference between the Singapore Yachting Festival and other boat shows ONE°15 Marina has hosted in the past?

In contrast to other boat shows that were focused on luxury, superyachts, fashion and high-end brands, the Singapore Yachting Festival acknowledges the diverse interests within the boating community. The event promotes the yachting lifestyle, showcasing the latest water toys and gadgets, and boats ranging from 10-60m.

Ā

The display has expanded to cater to first-time boat buyers and offer ancillary yachting equipment such as tenders, toys and recreational activities. Additionally, the festival enhances visitor experiences with an experiential zone featuring water toy demonstrations, trials and sea trials aboard charter vessels.

Ā

This year’s event will include a new ā€˜festival market’, plus water toys and cars

Ā

Since the pandemic, there has been a renewed emphasis on mental well-being and quality family time. As such, the new festival component aims to create a more inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere.

Ā

How will the 2024 event differ from last year’s edition?

We’ve significantly expanded the footprint of the event. In 2023, the event was focused purely on the on-water activities. Following the success of the first edition, we decided to invest further into the event by activating the land area surrounding the marina.

Ā

We’re delighted to introduce a new concept at this year’s event: a festival market that features upscale pop-up alfresco stalls offering artisan crafts, food, beverages and family-friendly activities. The festival market will enhance the event’s festivities and atmosphere.

Ā

Beneteau, Asia, Simpson Marine, Hong Kong, Asiamarine, Oceanis, Oceanis Yacht, First, First SE, NextWave Yachting, Flyer, Antares, Gran Turismo, Swift Trawler, Sanlorenzo

This year’s event could feature about 70 yachts

Ā

It encompasses a broad audience, including food and lifestyle vendors, yacht enthusiasts, buyers and sellers, along with visitors seeking to immerse themselves in the yachting lifestyle.

Ā

For this year’s Singapore Yachting Festival, we’ve also partnered with ICOMIA to deliver a two-day conference ahead of the show, from April 23-24. Darren Vaux, the President of ICOMIA, will share ICOMIA’s landmark research on reducing carbon emissions in the recreational marine industry. The Yacht Style Awards will then be held on the Wednesday evening, April 24.

Ā

What are your thoughts on the first two editions of the Blue Water EduFest, your brainchild?

It’s designed to be educational and inspiring, serving as a wake-up call for everyone to recognise the pressing need to protect our precious marine ecosystem and combat climate change by altering our mindset and lifestyle. The event has undeniably met its stated goals, and it’s imperative to sustain the momentum in disseminating its message, raising further awareness, and catalysing change.

Ā

What has been the response to ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove since it completed its US$5 million upgrade and reconfiguration in 2021?

Following the reconfiguration, we were accredited by the Marina Industries Association as a superyacht-ready marina and are receiving more superyachts to Singapore. The marina can accommodate yachts of up to 220ft, as we have a 40m-wide channel that facilitates the smooth manoeuvring of larger vessels within the marina.

Ā

Additionally, we’ve upgraded our pedestals to meet the power requirements of superyachts, enhanced the speed of our Wi-Fi connection and improved superyacht privileges, while the new superyacht berths provide more convenient access to the clubhouse.

Ā

The positive feedback from our returning customers serves as a strong testament to the notable improvements made to the marina through the reconfiguration.

Ā

How have the numbers of visiting and resident superyachts changed since 2021, which was still in the heart of the post-Covid era with limited sea travel between countries?

The numbers of visiting and resident superyachts have seen a significant change since 2021 due to various reasons. These include new purchases by high-end owners looking for permanent berthing here, as a safe base for travel in the region and spending more time with their family groups.

Ā

There were also vessels that typically travel across multiple regions and decided to find a safe location as a short-term base of operation, until the rest of the countries opened after Covid.

Ā

We also welcomed vessels that weathered the Covid period in remote locations, but couldn’t complete many aspects of their annual maintenance. Once they could travel freely, they came to the marina until they had an opportunity to book into a shipyard in Singapore.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove completed a US$5 million upgrade in 2021

Ā

These factors may have affected the numbers of visiting and resident superyachts in different ways and to varying degrees, depending on the specific region and circumstances. Detailed data and analysis from industry reports provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of these factors on superyacht activity.

Ā

As ONE°15 Marina activity is only a small part of SUTL Group, what are the other primary businesses in which you operate?

On the private company front, SUTL started as a ship chandelling and distribution business in 1968, and has evolved into a successful enterprise with a presence in 18 markets in Asia-Pacific. Fast-moving consumer goods remain a core pillar of the SUTL Group, which represents over 50 global brands and distributes an array of consumer and household goods, alcohol and tobacco. For over 25 years, we’ve also co-owned the KFC restaurant chain in Vietnam, where it now has over 180 stores.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove was inaugurated in 2007, a year after the first residences on Sentosa Cove opened

Ā

SUTL had never been involved in marinas before Sentosa Cove. Has the marina achieved what you hoped it would before it was launched in 2007, a year after Sentosa Cove’s first residence opened?

It has certainly exceeded my expectations. Seventeen years ago, we ventured into opening a marina in Singapore where such facilities were scarce and unfamiliar. Through dedicated efforts, we’ve successfully established ONE°15 Marina as Asia’s premier marina. I take great pride in seeing our team flourish and maintaining the brand’s equity and reputation, propelling it to new heights of success.

Ā

On that note, how has ONE°15 Marina benefited from and contributed to Sentosa’s reputation as one of Asia’s premier resort destinations, with Resorts World Sentosa opening in 2010?

ONE°15 Marina is privileged to occupy a serene and picturesque area of Sentosa Cove, close to Lazarus Island, St John’s Island and Sisters’ Islands, which greatly complements our charter business. Similarly, it enriches Sentosa’s appeal by allowing visitors to charter a boat and indulge in a leisurely cruise around Singapore’s waters, enjoying the sun, sand, and sea!

The Blue Water EduFest clean up includes beaches

Ā

How closely does SUTL work with the government, Sentosa Development Corporation and Sentosa Cove Resort Management (SCRM)?

We work together with our landlord to execute promotional campaigns, organise signature events, and implement green initiatives. ONE°15 Marina actively contributes to the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network’s objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

Ā

In addition, ONE°15 Marina enhances Sentosa’s attractions, offering significant value and complementing the idyllic waterfront and upscale residential enclave of Sentosa Cove, with its vibrant yachting lifestyle.

Ā

Located just 8nm south of Singapore, ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island in Indonesia opened last year. What facilities can visitors enjoy there now?

Following the conclusion of its regional collaboration with Simpson Marine, Beneteau has appointed two new dealers in Hong Kong. Asiamarine will be the Hong Kong dealer for Beneteau’s sailing yachts, which include the Oceanis, Oceanis Yacht, First and First SE ranges. Asiamarine’s new yachts portfolio also includes Galeon, Nimbus, Axopar and Lagoon, a Groupe Beneteau brand.

Ā

Also in Hong Kong, NextWave Yachting will represent Beneteau’s motorboats, which cover the Flyer, Antares, Gran Turismo and Swift Trawler series. NextWave’s other brands include Sunreef, Sunseeker and sister brands Invictus and Capoforte.

Ā

The appointments are the first to be made across seven markets in Asia following the end of Beneteau’s contract with Simpson Marine, which began in 1985 and concluded following the dealership’s recent acquisition by Sanlorenzo. Simpson Marine sold over 500 Beneteau boats in nearly four decades.

I particularly want to acknowledge Mike Simpson and his team for their outstanding work in delivering our boats and providing consistent support to our shared customers.

Ā

Ā

Richard Allen, Simpson Marine’s COO, added: ā€œWe’ve thoroughly enjoyed representing Beneteau throughout Asia over the last 40 years and assisting hundreds of clients in their yachting journey. We’ll continue to look after all our existing Beneteau owners, and will ensure a seamless transition for all our customers around the region. We wish Beneteau continued success for the future.ā€
