Wine Market Growth and Italy’s Position in 2024

Over the last five years, the global wine market has seen steady growth, with an annual average increase of five per cent. This consistent rise has been driven primarily by three key players — France, Italy, and the United States — which collectively represent approximately 60 per cent of the global wine market. The industry’s overall value is expected to reach approximately US$353.4 billion by the end of 2024, with global wine consumption projected at 25.3 billion litres.

Despite facing increased competition, Italy remains a significant force in the wine sector. In 2024, Italian wine exports saw a notable growth of seven per cent, reaching a value of EUR 2.5 billion. While Italy may have lost its title as the world’s largest wine producer to France, the country has shifted its focus towards enhancing quality over sheer volume, with experts predicting that Italian wine exports will surpass eight billion euros within the next two years. Regions such as Emilia-Romagna and Puglia are expected to experience the highest growth in exports for 2024, with projected increases of 4.6 per cent and 4.3 per cent. This highlights the increasing importance of regional diversity and local terroirs in Italy’s wine-making success.

Italy’s wine culture is deeply rooted in centuries of tradition and has long been a hallmark of the country’s identity. However, the past few decades have witnessed a remarkable evolution in the way the nation’s wine industry is celebrated and marketed. Wine festivals have emerged as a powerful force in bridging the gap between vineyard and consumer, transforming Italy’s wine industry into a vibrant and community-centered celebration. From the scenic vineyards of Tuscany to the bustling streets of Rome, these festivals not only boost local economies but also promote Italy’s diverse regional wine heritage. LUXUO delves into the importance of Italy’s wine industry and the significant role it plays in preserving culture, fostering connections, and driving economic growth.

Emerging Trends in the Wine Industry

The wine market in 2024 is also characterised by several key trends. One significant shift is the rising popularity of natural wines, which appeal to consumers seeking minimally processed products with fewer additives. Additionally, online wine purchases are growing, making wine more accessible to a global audience. With increasing consumer demand for transparency, a strong focus on traceability is another emerging trend. This is coupled with the industry’s move towards sustainable packaging, as eco-conscious buyers look for products that align with environmental values.

These findings are drawn from the report titled “Italy in the Global Wine Market. Evolution and Perspectives,” curated by Valerio Mancini, director of the Rome Business School’s Research Centre. This report underscores Italy’s ongoing evolution within the global wine industry, shifting towards high-quality production and embracing new consumer trends to maintain its competitiveness on the world stage.

Driving Local Economies and Tourism

The Sagra dell’Uva festival in Marino

Italy is world-renowned for its vibrant autumn wine festivals, which celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of each region’s terroir – from the volcanic soils of Sicily to the rolling hills of Piedmont and Tuscany. These festivals are key to promoting local wine traditions and showcasing how the land itself shapes the distinct flavours of Italian wines. Rome, as the gateway to many of these renowned wine regions, also hosts several notable events. A prime example is the Sagra dell’Uva in Marino, a charming town in the Castelli Romani region, just outside Rome.

This festival, which celebrated its 100th edition between the end of September and early October 2024, is one of Italy’s oldest and most beloved wine events. The Sagra dell’Uva not only honours the annual grape harvest but also highlights the deep-rooted connection between the land, the people, and the wine that has been produced in the region for centuries. The event is a grand celebration of local culture, with processions, historical re-enactments, and — of course — ample wine tastings.

A view of Mt Vesuvius through a vineyard from the Pompeii ruins near Naples, Italy.

By drawing thousands of visitors to these small towns, festivals like the Sagra dell’Uva play a vital role in sustaining the local economy and ensuring that Italy’s rich winemaking heritage continues to flourish. These events provide a unique opportunity for wine enthusiasts to experience the intersection of tradition, culture, and modern innovation in winemaking.

Wine festivals have a significant economic impact on local communities by drawing tourists from around the world. These events generate revenue not just for vineyards, but also for nearby hotels, restaurants, and artisanal markets. The influx of visitors provides a vital boost to rural economies, especially in less frequented wine-producing regions which help sustain these areas economically, even outside of peak travel seasons.

Wine as a Cultural & Sustainable Experience

Italian wine festivals are more than just about wine – they are holistic cultural experiences. The inclusion of local cuisine, art, and music alongside wine tastings enhances the overall experience for attendees. This fusion of wine and culture deepens the consumer’s emotional connection to the product, making it an integral part of Italian lifestyle and identity. Festivals like Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars) offer attendees the opportunity to pair their wine tastings with stargazing, local art displays, and regional delicacies. This multi-sensory experience creates a memorable connection that reinforces wine’s role in the broader cultural and social fabric of Italy.

When it comes to promoting sustainability, events like Slow Wine Fair and Sicilia en Primeur promote organic, biodynamic, and natural wines. They also serve as spaces where producers can share innovations in eco-friendly wine production, reinforcing Italy’s leadership in sustainable winemaking on a global scale. With growing concerns about climate change and the environmental impact of agriculture, Italian wine festivals are also becoming educational platforms that raise awareness about sustainability. Vintners who practice organic or biodynamic farming use these events to showcase their commitment to eco-friendly production methods.

A shelf full of Italian wine and spirits in Rome

Italy’s wine festivals are not just a celebration of fine vintages – they are dynamic engines of cultural preservation, economic development, and sustainability. These events serve as vital platforms for promoting regional wine heritage, fostering direct relationships between producers and consumers, and boosting local economies. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and the integration of cultural heritage make these events essential for preserving Italy’s wine traditions for future generations. As wine enthusiasts and producers come together to celebrate, the country’s unique combination of tradition, innovation, and passion for wine continues to be shared with the world.

Benetti has sold the first unit of its B.Yond 57M, just weeks after the model’s official presentation at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show. The 57M is the largest hybrid unit in the B.Yond ‘voyager’ family of yachts, which features advanced eco-friendly technologies, exterior design by Igor Lobanov of Lobanov Design and interior styling by Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.

Daniela Petrozzi, Benetti’s Sales Director, said: “We are proud to announce the sale of the first unit of B.Yond 57M as this demonstrates the market’s positive reaction to our new projects announced at the end of September. We are happy to start this new journey with our client.”

The B.Yond 57M features hybrid technology

The B.Yond 57M is offered with Beach, Air or Water stern configurations. The owner of the first unit has selected the Beach version, which includes an expansive 162sqm beach area and a 15sqm pool that can be covered by a sliding sofa system and converted into a lounging area.

The beach area is directly connected with the convertible garage deck, a 100sqm flexible space that – when toys are in the water – can be converted into a shaded zone, creating an outstanding external/internal area of 260sqm.

The innovative interior layout includes guest cabins on the main deck and the main saloon on the upper deck, allowing for panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows and an uninterrupted, 22m-long open space.

The B.Yond 57M advanced technology includes a hybrid-electric system that allows the yacht to cruise or stay at anchor with zero emissions. A direct-expansion HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) system offers customised temperature and humidity settings while reducing consumption by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional water systems.

Additionally, instead of teak to cover the decks, Benetti has chosen EcoDeck®, a sustainable and 100 per cent recyclable material, while FSC woods and sustainable fabrics, leathers and stones have been chosen for the interior fittings, with water-based paints used for the finishes.

As the entry list rises for this year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, the event is also enjoying strong corporate support. Amazing Thailand – the promotional slogan of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) – was recently announced as a gold sponsor for the 36th edition, which will be held from November 30 to December 6.

“Their support is vital in enhancing the experience for our sailing community and gives our international participants a fantastic opportunity to explore the stunning beauty of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” regatta organisers stated. “We’re grateful for their trust and commitment to making this year’s regatta a memorable event for everyone involved.”

Centara Hotels & Resorts is among silver sponsors of the week-long event, which will again be held in the waters off Kata Beach.

The King’s Cup is Asia’s most famous international regatta and features keelboats, multihulls, optimists and dinghies. Disabled sailing will feature in this year’s event and be held in two-person SV14 dinghies on the same days as the main dinghy competition.

Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Rama 9 of Thailand, the event has since been held every year apart from 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. Last December, the King’s Cup made headlines as King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida became the first Royal visitors to the event.

On the last day of racing, Queen Suthida competed on Vayu THA72, as the TP52 owned by brothers Kevin and Tom Whitcraft won both of its races to finish second overall in IRC Zero. The Queen later presided over the Royal Awards Presentation, presenting awards to all the winners.

DCH Marine continues Asia-Pacific expansion

Now the APAC representative for Sunseeker, Saxdor and Williams, DCH Marine has big plans for growth in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Headquartered in Hong Kong and with offices in Shenzhen (China) and Singapore, DCH Marine is planning to continue its Asia-Pacific expansion by opening offices in Phuket (Thailand), as well as across Australia, including in New South Wales, Gold Coast and Perth.

A newly branded dealership with a decade of success in Greater China, DCH Marine currently represents Sunseeker, Saxdor and Williams across the entire Asia-Pacific region, where the growing dealership plans to have a strong presence at the region’s leading boat shows.

A participant at the recent Lantau Yacht Club Boat Show – Festa Nautica in Hong Kong, DCH Marine is preparing to exhibit at the Hong Kong International Boat Show (November 28-December 1, 2024), Thailand International Boat Show (January 9-12, 2025) and Singapore Yachting Festival (April 10-13, 2025).

The company will then turn its attention to Australia, where it will participate at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (22-25 May 2025) and Sydney International Boat Show (July 31-August 3, 2025).

Adam Waters, DCH Marine’s Managing Director, said: “DCH Marine employs many of the region’s foremost yachting professionals and experts, and our team continues to grow across Asia-Pacific as we roll out new markets and offices.

We’ve always been committed to providing the best customer experience, so we’re investing heavily in our people, premises and product offerings to ensure we continue to lead in this market.”

DCH Marine’s services across its varied markets and locations in Asia-Pacific include new yacht sales, brokerage, after-sales services and maintenance. Founded in 2013 as Princess Yachts Greater China, the dealership recently concluded its official representation of the British builder, although it continues to support its Princess clients for ongoing warranty and service work.

As it recently embarked on a new era, the dealership was renamed DCH Marine ahead of its appointment as Sunseeker’s exclusive master distributor for Asia-Pacific, with the new name reflecting the company’s ownership by the Dah Chong Hong (DCH) Holdings conglomerate.

The custom Sunseeker 76 Yacht features a galley-down layout with a bar in the saloon

Earlier this year, Sunseeker announced DCH Marine’s representation of the brand in Singapore and then Australia and New Zealand before revealing in September that the dealership was overseeing all of Asia-Pacific – the largest territory ever assigned to a single distributor.

As DCH Marine, we entered a long-term agreement with Sunseeker International, which cemented the next step in our future,” Waters said. “Sunseeker wanted master distributors to cover large territories, and it suited us to work with them across Asia-Pacific. The partnership was a natural extension of our growth strategy.”

DCH Marine is Sunseeker’s fourth master distributor around the globe, complementing One Water Yacht Group (USA), Sunseeker London Group (Mediterranean) and Sunseeker Gulf (Middle East).

From its manufacturing base in Poole on England’s south coast, Sunseeker employs about 2,200 people and every year produces around 130 boats ranging from 38-161ft, with 98 per cent exported. With Asia-Pacific already home to over 500 Sunseeker yachts, DCH Marine is well-positioned to build on this strong foundation.

Douglas Culverwell, Sunseeker International’s Director of Distributor Development, said: “DCH Marine has consistently demonstrated a world-class level of customer service and support. Asia-Pacific is a vital region for Sunseeker, and we’re truly excited about the opportunities this partnership will bring.”

DCH Marine’s new yachts portfolio also includes British company Williams, one of the world’s leading producers of jet tenders and formerly represented by the dealership when it was known as Princess Yachts Greater China.

In January, DCH Marine’s ambitions were underlined when it was announced at Boot Dusseldorf that it was the Asia-Pacific representative of Saxdor, the fast-growing Finnish builder of luxury, versatile day boats and the latest shipyard founded by renowned designer Sakari Mattila.

Part of DCH Marine’s remit is to help select distributors outside of its core Asia-Pacific markets, exemplified by the recent appointment of Yacht Sourcing as Saxdor’s Indonesia representative, with more to come.

Offshore racing is sailing’s gruelling discipline. It is arduous, unpredictable and places immense strain on competing crews. Throughout a gripping 45th edition of the 606-nautical-mile Rolex Middle Sea Race, the qualities of perseverance, adaptability and dedication came to the fore as the 112-strong fleet confronted the vagaries of the both the weather and the contest itself.

Success at one of the world’s foremost 600-nautical-mile races demands the maximum from each individual and every crew as a collective. Rolex has partnered the Rolex Middle Sea Race and its organiser Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) since 2002.

Hong Kong’s Scallywag 100 and the German-flagged TP52 Red Bandit secured line honours and overall victory on handicap respectively, and the stories behind the winners of the race’s main prizes are of crews working together to overcome adversity.

Scallywag 100 was joined at the front of the monohull fleet by another imperious 100ft maxi, the Monaco-flagged Black Jack 100, together with the American 88-footer Lucky, which under its previous guise as Rambler 88 claimed line honours at the race on five occasions.

The predicted tight contest played out. Throughout the race, Scallywag 100 and Black Jack 100 frequently exchanged leadership of the race. The key moment came when Scallywag 100’s decorated Spanish navigator Juan Vila made an inspired tactical call when rounding Lampedusa, one of the last main junctures in the race.

The decision was not to tack but head into a cloud to gain a better angle, a calculated risk that allowed her to pull away from her rival. Scallywag 100 arrived back in Malta to post a winning elapsed time of two days, 21 hours, 33 minutes and 29 seconds.

Scallywag 100 owner Lee Seng Huang has committed significant time and energy to the team’s campaign, with the crew fully focused on delivering success and sailing the boat to its maximum potential.

Line honours victory provided immense satisfaction for skipper David Witt and the crew after the devastation of retiring from last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race following a broken bowsprit.

“This is a really prestigious Rolex race and a test to see if we did the right thing,” Witt said. “That’s one of the toughest races I’ve done in a 100-footer. It was a massive team effort. I am really proud of the team – we never made a mistake. Starting and finishing in Malta is fantastic and something we’d like to do it again.”

Red Bandit’s crew, led by skipper Carl-Peter Forster, is made up of two professionals and 11 talented young sailors who have assiduously followed Forster’s charitable pathway programme designed to develop the offshore sailors of tomorrow. For the skipper, success was reward for the commitment which has gone into the initiative.

“It is a dream to win the Rolex Middle Sea Race. It is a bit unreal and will be for a while. When the crew started this project, they had very little knowledge of offshore or big boat sailing,” said Forster, whose team also won last year’s 70th Rolex Giraglia.

Red Bandit, a TP52, won overall honours; Photo: Rolex  / Kurt Arrigo

“We’ve come a long way over the last three years, and everyone has learnt to sail this delicate machine. A TP52 is very difficult to handle both in the breeze and in the light winds. You can’t take your eyes off the instruments for a second.”

The crew had to contend with a brutal first night at sea. On the stretch along the east coast of Sicily from Capo Passero to the Messina Strait, and with the mighty volcano of Etna illuminating the night sky, the fleet were besieged by a violent thunderstorm.

Twelve months earlier, Red Bandit faced misfortune when forced to retire from the race at a similar stage because of equipment damage. This year the boat proved more robust, and the race proved a relentless experience.

Joshua Weber, Red Bandit’s navigator said: “There are lots of decisions to take and things to figure out. The race has many individual segments and longer stretches in between that you have to get right. It comes down to the whole team not just putting the boat in the right place but getting it there and going as fast as possible. It requires a huge, combined effort.”

Overcoming adversity and achieving it as a collective defines all the 600-nautical-mile offshore classics supported by Rolex. The 2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race has ably demonstrated that an intrepid human spirit is a hallmark characteristic of offshore racing and Rolex’s longstanding support for this eternally appealing discipline of yachting.

The 2024 edition of Boating Sanya will be held from December 5-8 at the Sanya International Yachting Centre. The four-day exhibition will occupy 13,000sqm on land – almost the size of two football pitches – and 129,100sqm of water, according to organisers.

The first edition of Boating Sanya was held at the Sanya International Yachting Centre in April 2023, soon after the public marina officially opened. Simpson Marine was among leading in-water exhibitors.

This year, exhibitors listed by organisers include European luxury yacht brands such as Azimut, Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Princess, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Leopard, Bali, Sessa, Saxdor, Dufour and Nautique, as well as local shipyards including Heysea.

This year’s show will collaborate with the nearby yacht marina in Sanya Port ”to present a world-class yacht bay lifestyle”, while a yacht river cruise is among new features.

Exhibitor categories include motoryachts, sailboats, equipment and accessories, diving gear, marina developers and pontoon suppliers, resort products, maritime organisations and clubs, watersports clothing, and water-related art and literature.

Seminars and round tables will focus on topics such as ‘Chinese yacht brands expand overseas’, ‘Development trends of eco-friendly energy yachts’ and ‘Yacht industry and high-end lifestyle’. Other highlights include the China Yacht Awards Ceremony, video and photography competitions, and a Yacht Fashion Lifestyle Market, as well as cocktail parties and functions.

A Free Trade Port and the biggest of China’s 20-plus free trade zones, Hainan offers zero-tariff yacht registration for imported yachts, in contrast to other provinces that can impose taxes and levies upwards of 38 per cent on imported yachts.

Situated on the southern tip of Hainan, Sanya is the hub of luxury hospitality and high-end entertainment in the island province. At the end of 2023, the city was home to 1,367 yachts, which amounts to 85 per cent of the island province’s total.

Hainan is known as ‘the Hawaii of China’, with Sanya’s average temperature in December ranging from 20-25 degrees Celsius, offering idyllic weather for visitors to the Boating Sanya show.

The Thailand International Boat Show a Luxury Lifestyle Event 2025 (TIBS 2025), with its central focus on yachting, amid other quality products and services, is all set for Phuket Yacht Haven marina from January 9-12, 2025. Following are 10 good reasons to attend.

Reason 1: Optimal location and access to a broader range of displays

Yacht Style, Thailand International Boat Show, a Luxury Lifestyle Event, Phuket Yacht Haven, Azimut, Sunseeker, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline

Phuket Yacht Haven is Phuket’s largest marina and opens expansion potential for TIBS 2025, enabling the show to welcome a broader range of exhibitors including larger yachts, international brands and luxury lifestyle products.

With its 332-berth capacity and contemporary facilities, the marina offers deep-water access, with a draft of up to 6m, to allow accommodating superyachts over 100m. Superior infrastructure includes specialised pontoons for large vessels and high-power electrical outlets providing up to 500amps. Visitor amenities include an upscale bistro, crew lounges and premium leisure facilities, in a naturally sheltered environment.

Reason 2: Ideal access and timing to attract luxury property owners and yacht enthusiasts

Located 15 minutes away from Phuket International Airport and surrounded by world-class resorts – like the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach, Splash Beach Resort and Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas – further enhances its appeal to high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs).

The venue is easily accessible by car and has plentiful parking. Regular shuttle buggy services sponsored by Thailand Privilege will ensure ease of movement around the marina, which is key for the attendees’ experience.

Held in early January, TIBS 2025 will attract residents and visitors including villa owners and yacht enthusiasts, at the peak time for aircraft movements recorded at Phuket airport.

Reason 3: It couldn’t be easier to attend

The entrance to TIBS 2025 is free, and you can register on the day itself; however, pre-registering for ease of entry is recommended. Such accessibility allows a wide range of enthusiasts – from seasoned yacht owners to curious newcomers – to experience the world of luxury yachting and a curated selection of lifestyle brands and services.

Reason 4: Strong focus on water display and lifestyle

The new-format 2025 edition of TIBS builds on the success of previous years, showcasing top names in the yachting industry and luxury lifestyle brands, with over 50 yachts on display and 100 exhibitors expected.

Yacht distributors and their brands include Asiamarine (Nimbus T9, Capelli Stradivari), Azimut (Fly 53, Fly 60, Grande 26M), Boat Lagoon Yachting (Princess, Jeanneau), Derani Yachts (Axopar 37 XC, Axopar 29 XC, Fleming 85 – Thailand debut, Greenline 48 Fly), MarineXplorer (Nerea Yacht NY24 – Thailand debut), Motor Field (YOT 36), Simpson Marine (Sanlorenzo SL90A, Bluegame BGX63, Fairline Squadron 58, Fairline Targa 45GT), and Sunseeker (90 Ocean, Manhattan 68, Manhattan 55) displaying luxury yachts and marine innovations, alongside industry-leading exhibitors’ displays of cutting-edge navigation systems, bespoke yacht interiors and the like.

Reason 5: High show ratings,  exhibitor and visitor return rate

Exhibitors praised the past TIBS editions’ impact. Howard Prime from Simpson Marine, representing Italian luxury yacht brands Sanlorenzo and Bluegame, noted the “good quality interest” in their displays.

Recent first-time exhibitor SITICO expressed satisfaction at the show’s success, with its representative saying: “I was surprised at how good the show is and the number of leads I got.” Aqua Air Asia Watermaker sold 12 units at the 2024 show. From yachts to accessories, exhibitors cater to every aspect of yachting – and beyond.

Reason 6: Opportunity to share insights and shape the future of yachting in Thailand and beyond

A one-day, pre-show conference focuses on Asia’s key yachting issues. The second edition of the Thailand Yachting Conference, on January 8, 2025, will focus on critical issues facing the yachting industry in Thailand and across Asia. The latest regulations, sustainability initiatives, and business strategies shaping the future of yachting in the region will be explained, in themed seminars.

New superyacht licensing regulations in Thailand: This key session will explore Thailand’s newly revised superyacht regulations. The changes, which allow for easier access to charter licences for foreign-flagged superyachts, are set to boost Thailand’s appeal as a global yachting hub. These regulations aim to increase the number of superyachts operating in Thai waters, providing significant opportunities for local marinas, service providers and yacht operators.

Sustainability in yachting – navigating towards a greener future: Sustainability is rapidly becoming a priority in the yachting industry, and the 2025 Yachting Conference explores the latest eco-conscious trends and technology shaping the future of marine tourism in Asia.

Latest sustainability regulations affecting yachting in Asia: Several Asian countries, including Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, are leading the charge with new regulations that promote greener yachting practices. These regulations directly impact yacht operators, builders, and marinas.

Show Gala – an evening of luxury and entertainment: Following the insightful discussions of the day, visitors will have the opportunity to attend a memorable evening at the exclusive Show Gala Dinner. Set against the backdrop of Phuket’s coastal beauty, expect an elegant night of fine dining, premium beverages, and world-class entertainment. It’s also an invaluable networking opportunity. With a guest list that includes yacht owners, industry executives and global leaders, the evening provides a relaxed setting for attendees to forge new business connections and strengthen existing relationships.

Reason 7: A sustainable event needed for Southeast Asia

Yacht Style, Thailand International Boat Show, a Luxury Lifestyle Event, Phuket Yacht Haven, Azimut, Sunseeker, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline

While TIBS may not yet match the scale of European mega-shows, it has revealed steady growth since the Covid-19 pandemic, establishing itself as a crucial regional event. Its unique strength is that it attracts Asia-based buyers who may not typically attend any other international shows. This makes it an essential platform for exhibitors looking to tap into the growing Asian market.

Looking ahead, TIBS aims to become the largest luxury-lifestyle event in the region, with plans to expand its in-water show element. As the event grows, organisers are encouraged to plan and showcase eco-friendly initiatives and sustainable practices, aligning with the increasing focus on environmental responsibility in the luxury sector.

Reason 8: The event contributes to lifestyle and social economic growth in Phuket and Thailand

Yacht Style, Thailand International Boat Show, a Luxury Lifestyle Event, Phuket Yacht Haven, Azimut, Sunseeker, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline

In Phuket, a global hotspot for luxury living, the yachting industry plays a crucial role in its booming economy. The island sees an influx of high-end tourists and expatriates each year, contributing to higher-than-average income levels in Thailand. The region’s increasing affluence is mirrored by a rising number of HNWIs and UHNWIs, with Southeast Asia experiencing a compound annual growth rate of 7.5 per cent in wealth.

Luxury spending across Thailand is also on the rise, and events like TIBS contribute significantly to local and domestic economic growth, boosting the hospitality and tourism sectors to visitors, with international and local purveyors of luxury lifestyle brands also showcasing their latest products and services.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand predicts that the yachting industry could generate up to THB1 billion (over US$29.8 million) annually for Phuket, positioning the island as a major player in the global yachting market.

Reason 9: Elevated lifestyle products and services

Yacht Style, Thailand International Boat Show, a Luxury Lifestyle Event, Phuket Yacht Haven, Azimut, Sunseeker, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline

Complementing the displays of yachts, marine toys, accessories and services, visitors can enjoy a selection of elevated lifestyle products and services. Exhibitors include Thailand Privilege, Seabob, Flow Yacht Club, Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Flexiteek / STEK, SITICO, Siam Legal and The Standard Residence, among others.

Reason 10: Strong show visibility and attendance

The Thailand International Boat Show a Luxury Lifestyle Event 2025 promises to be a captivating show for anyone interested in the yachting lifestyle. With over 6,000 visitors expected, the show offers an opportunity to explore the best of what the yachting industry has to offer, in one of the world’s most beautiful locations.

Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic cities in the world, yet nestled around this bustling metropolis is about 1,100km of coastline full of beautiful beaches and remote places, a UNESCO Geopark, and hundreds of islands that will surprise and delight.

Day or overnight charters let guests experience an amazing side of Hong Kong that most people never get to see, as well as try out several yacht styles and models to find just the right one before making a purchase. These days, there’s a lot of buyer interest in sailing and power catamarans, which offer an abundance of space and comfort, as well as luxury.

LAGOON CHOICES

Asiamarine now offers three catamarans from French builder Lagoon, part of the Beneteau Group, in its Hong Kong charter fleet: the Lagoon 51 and Lagoon 620 sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Sixty 7 motoryacht.

The Lagoon 51, a new addition to the Asiamarine charter fleet, is perfectly equipped for a thrilling charter experience. It features plenty of marine toys, including a slide and an ocean pool, and even a karaoke system for onboard entertainment. With the capacity to accommodate up to 30 guests and six cabins, it’s ideal for large groups and overnight charters.

The Lagoon 51 is the most recent addition to Asiamarine’s Hong Kong charter fleet

The globally-popular Lagoon 620 is a favourite for family outings in Hong Kong waters, boasting many water toys such as paddleboards, fishing gear, an ocean pool and a tender. It’s designed to provide endless fun on the water.

The Sixty 7 is Asiamarine’s largest Lagoon charter catamaran and is particularly popular with corporate groups due to its expansive deck area. The elegant interior features nautical colours, offering a sophisticated setting for any event.

As for where to explore on a charter in Hong Kong, a good place to start is dynamic Victoria Harbour and then go northeast to the picturesque Sai Kung Country Park area, or south towards the islands of Lamma and Lantau. Bespoke itineraries and experiences with preferences of those boarding or booking are available through Asiamarine.

SAI KUNG

Hong Kong day trips include sailing up towards beautiful Tai Long Wan, which translates to ‘Big Wave Bay’. This bay boasts a white-sand beach that’s popular with surfers and campers, and is located on the eastern edge of Sai Kung Country Park.

Tai Long Wan offers 3km of sandy beach near Sai Kung

Another option is the beach at Long Ke Wan, which has been referred to as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by CNN and many other media outlets around the world. Millionaire’s Bay is only accessible via boat or hike, and Millionaire’s Beach (Nam Fung Wan) is a popular spot for snorkelling.

A favourite destination among day-charter clients, Clear Water Bay beach is tucked away on the northeastern coast of Sai Kung.

TO THE SOUTH

Turning south, Sham Wan Beach on Lamma Island is best known as the only regular nesting site for green sea turtles in the South China Sea. This beautiful turtle beach is open to the public from June 1 to October 31, once the turtle nesting period is over.

Repulse Bay Beach is perhaps Hong Kong Island’s most popular beach. Nestled on the south side backed by striking hiking hills, the bay and beach have a colonial charm and resort-like feel.

Nearby, and also surrounded by hills, Deep Water Bay is a bathing beach in the city, a full view of which can also be appreciated at the mountaintop of Ocean Park, a few nautical miles away in Aberdeen.

“For a two-day, one-night charter, I recommend cruising to Sai Kung Country Park and Tai Long Wan for a day of exploration and spending the night at Double Haven, where the waters are calm and serene,” said Laura Verbrugge, Asiamarine’s Head of Charter Team.

“One of our most popular three-day itineraries in the cooler months from September to February is to explore the remote Soko Islands, as well as Lamma Island in the southern part of Hong Kong.”

SOKO ISLANDS

Departing from Hong Kong Island’s Central Piers or Aberdeen on the south side, the voyage begins to the Soko Islands – located at the far southwest corner of Hong Kong’s territory. Once home to a small community of farmers and fishermen, today mostly only abandoned houses, ruins, and shrines remain.

Consisting of Tai A Chau, Siu A Chau and several smaller nearby islets, the area is often visited by Chinese white dolphins and porpoises, making it an excellent site for rare sightings of these beautiful marine animals. It has a very quiet anchorage and pristine waters, perfect for an overnight stay.

The interior of the Lagoon 51 is a great place to socialise

On the second day, guests can either stay in the Soko Islands to enjoy water toys, beaches and relaxation or go sailing to Tai O fishing village. This charming and popular tourist destination attracts numerous visitors who come to spend their day and soak in the village’s idyllic life, admire the traditional stilt houses, and savour local treats. This is followed by a walk on Lantau Island and a visit to the long and sandy Cheung Sha Beach.

On day three, the Lagoon catamaran cruises in the direction of Lamma Island, the third-largest in Hong Kong with a small population of fewer than 10,000 locals and expats. Also one of the best spots to admire the sunset in Hong Kong, Lamma has long been known as a laid-back place with a ‘hipsterish’ vibe, though it still clings on to the traditional way of life associated with fishing villages on the outlying islands.

There are many great restaurants in Yung Shue Wan village, and the island has plenty of small and clean beaches, with Sham Wan the most famous one because of the sea turtles. The beach and bay are closed from June 1 to October 31 during the rare turtle’s mating season.

UNESCO GEOPARK

Other multi-day charters with Asiamarine from March to September include cruising to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, which has very good water quality and diverse marine life and coral communities. This trip includes a night in Double Haven, perhaps one of Hong Kong’s most beautiful areas, and a visit to the UNESCO Geopark’s three larger islands.

Asiamarine, yacht, charter, Hong Kong, Lagoon, 51, 620, Sixty 7, Double Haven Sai Kung, Tai Long Wan, Lamma, Lantau, UNESCO

Double Haven is a popular cruising area in the northeast part of Hong Kong

The ‘Maldives of Hong Kong’ itinerary includes the famous Tai Long Wan and Sai Wan beaches, plus Bluff Island / Basalt Island, then cruising back to stop by the Ninepin Islands. Bluff Island is the largest of this group and features the spectacular columnar sea cliffs that make the Geopark famous. These towering vertiginous cliffs dominate the senses as you paddle below them.

Ninepin Islands is a hidden hexagonal column paradise in Hong Kong. A series of 29 volcanic islands in the Sai Kung area. The hexagonal columns can be seen from afar, and the dramatic formation gives them a certain exotic air. This uninhabited island features beautiful water and sea caves.

Another itinerary for sightseeing at the Geopark begins in Sai Kung and after about 30 minutes reaches Jin Island. The rock there is rather fragmented, but the form of the hexagonal rock columns is clearly visible. Jin Island got its Chinese name from a bell-shaped sea arch at its south end.

Sailing on, the Lagoon soon comes to Fa Shan, of High Island, where a neat array of soaring hexagonal rock columns lines the shore. At the end of Fa Shan is an islet, called Po Pin Chau, with towering rock columns arranged uniformly on the sea cliff that make the formation look like a giant pipe organ.

The Ung Kong Group lies south of Fa Shan and a 10-minute boat ride will reveal the famous sculptural rock-column layer formations along the cliff face of Wang Chau.

So, if you’re living in Hong Kong, or visiting, start planning a Lagoon catamaran charter excursion with Asiamarine to some of these amazing places to escape the city and relax in the varied natural beauty of its extensive coastline and islands.

Sunny Leung, Head of Volvo Penta China, in Hong Kong in August 2024

Based in Shanghai, Sunny Leung, Head of Volvo Penta China, recently addressed a room of 60 yachting-industry professionals and boat owners in Hong Kong on the latest developments by Volvo Penta, the lauded Swedish engine manufacturer. The presentation was pitched at dealerships, brokerages, service and maintenance yards, marinas and yachting association members.

Leung’s event and some meetings in Hong Kong were coordinated by Grandtech International Engineering, which was founded by Meme Poon and is the Hong Kong dealer for Volvo Penta China.

Meme Poon, founder and General Manager of Grandtech International Engineering, Volvo Penta’s Hong Kong dealer

An animated speaker, Leung was back in his home town and used a combination of Cantonese and English to recap some of Volvo Penta’s history. The company launched its first Inboard Performance System (IPS) in 2005, squarely focused on use in leisure craft (the manufacturer went on to produce a commercial-vessel version, in smaller volume).

Last year, it started rolling out the IPS40 system, part of what it calls its professional platform, with smarter tech. Soon, it will be able to be hooked up to a user’s app to present control options and monitor that all’s well. The system is also usable with bio-fuel.

Next year the IPS40 begins a larger scale production, but preorders have filled its calendar to the extent that the first delivery year for Greater China is in 2026. That’s popularity.

Yacht Style sat down with Leung, who provided more insights into Volvo Penta and its IPS propulsion systems.

How would you describe your job in China, and how much of it relates to the IPS for leisure boating?

I’m responsible for Volvo Penta, China, which is supplying solutions for all power areas of Volvo including for OEMs [original equipment manufacturer for other brands] and lots of different customers, off-road vehicles, and systems for power generation. The IPS, though, has been a big growth area.

In leisure power boating, how do you view propulsion needs in Greater China, including Hong Kong?

Development in China is quite different from other markets in the Asia-Pacific area. We have a huge market. Volvo Penta has been in China for more than 20 years, and we have done extremely well in all our areas.

Volvo Penta, Sunny Leung, Meme Poon, Grandtech International Engineering, Yacht Style, IPS, inboard performance system

Sunny Leung provides updates on Volvo Penta developments

Our products are known as being very efficient, reliable and environmentally-friendly, and we always put safety as our number-one target. All these qualities are also at the heart of the IPS.

The new IPS40 is targeted at the pleasure-boat industry. What other aspects make it appealing and suited to this segment?

It’s a unique product. No one else is offering a product like it, with such current technology that can be used in diesel engines or hybrid power. Plus, the IPS40 offers a comfortable way of controlling the yacht, which is very different.

It’s being used by more and more [yacht] manufacturers all over the world – particularly in the European and American markets, because of its easy manoeuvrability and low fuel consumption.

Are you happy with the service providers in Hong Kong and mainland China?

The customers seem to like the way that we actively serve them and deal with their requests, and we only use very reliable service providers.

Talking about what the customer wants, are you moving towards boat owners using more electronic power mobility or propulsion?

Yes, we have done this for a while, with other Penta systems in other industries we work with, like mining and power generation, where we already use electronic power mobility.

For yachts, we need to look at the actual situation of the market. So, in Hong Kong, customers would need to have more availability of electric charging points or hydrogen-refuelling access at jetties or piers for us to be able to move more in that direction. With our IPS right now, it’s easier for the customer to change from a diesel to a hybrid.

Volvo Penta, Sunny Leung, Meme Poon, Grandtech International Engineering, Yacht Style, IPS, inboard performance system

Sunny Leung outlined Hong Kong’s role in China’s ‘Nine Plus Two’ cities

In five years or so we will offer more hydrogen- or methanol-powered systems, with a diesel mix. As governments take step-by-step approaches to reduce emissions in power generation, we hope to work with them together to ready the infrastructure, moving in step with that to offer new solutions in the next two years.

As the ‘China Five’ plans [for increasing renewable energy every five years] are happening, we expect Hong Kong will follow the same path. We already have a product development team in [mainland China] for this. For short-distance boats, the infrastructure should be ready there in 10 years. We expect hybrid, hydrogen and methanol will be more dominant in 10 years’ time.

Volvo Penta, Sunny Leung, Meme Poon, Grandtech International Engineering, Yacht Style, IPS, inboard performance system

Meme Poon (right) hosted curious visitors

Do you have any further forecasts for your China markets?

We do believe that in the ‘Nine Plus Two’ (nine cities in southern China and the two Special Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau), Hong Kong will become even more of a ‘yachting centre’ in the area, with its long experience in this and its European and international supply chain already set up.

Yachting is still growing slowly in mainland China, but we have increasing interest for Volvo Penta IPS from the south, especially in Hainan – and more widely across the country.
