The annual Beneteau Cup Hong Kong started a new chapter this year, with the event now run by Asiamarine, the brand’s new local sailboat dealer.

With Beneteau celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2024, the French brand’s annual Hong Kong sailing event changed hands as the event was organised for the first time by Asiamarine.

Founded in 2021 and held each autumn, the Beneteau Cup Hong Kong adopted a new rally format this November under the new organisers, with the dealership hosting the event in collaboration with Beneteau’s Asia-Pacific office.

The fourth edition welcomed 14 Beneteau sailboats ranging from 26-51ft and “over 100 enthusiastic sailors, uniting seasoned professionals, enthusiasts and sailor families,” according to Asiamarine, which was announced as the Beneteau sailboat dealer for Hong Kong in March.

The day began with a rally departing from Repulse Bay. With wind ranging from 4-7 knots on the day, participants navigated a scenic course to Cape D’Aguilar and Castle Rock, then back, completing the rally within a four-hour timeframe.

VIP guests followed the course of the rally aboard the official spectator boat, a beautiful Lagoon 560, sponsored by its owner and now for sale with Asiamarine. The celebrations continued with a prizegiving ceremony and afterparty at Aberdeen Boat Club’s Middle Island clubhouse.

Erwan Her, Beneteau’s Asia-Pacific Sales Director, attended the event and highlighted the significance of the fourth Beneteau Cup Hong Kong during his speech at the closing ceremony.

“This year’s Beneteau Cup was a unique one as we celebrate Beneteau’s 140th anniversary, blending the brand’s legacy of craftsmanship with the shared passion for the sea,” Her said. “Congratulations to all the participants and to the Asiamarine team for making this such a memorable occasion.”

Asiamarine impressed participants as the dealership successfully took over organisation of the event. Alexandre Tricot, Brand Manager of Beneteau and Lagoon at Asiamarine, was a key part of the organising team, having previously won the Beneteau Cup Hong Kong as a participant.

“Sailing has always been a personal passion of mine, which is why this event holds such special meaning,” Tricot said.

“It’s an honour for Asiamarine to organise this, bringing together the sailing community in Hong Kong. We’re thrilled to expand this community even further next year, not just increasing the sale of Beneteau sailboats across Hong Kong and Singapore but having more people fall in love with the sport.

The Beneteau Cup Hong Kong also raised over HK$11,000 for the Heep Hong Society, a local charity supporting children and youth with diverse needs.

The event’s sponsors included LQV, Clean Max, Optical 88, Vines & Terroirs, Ullman Sails, Taittinger, Only Beverage, Mystic Island, Mazu, Corona, Determinant, Franck Muller, Pedro and Bain Marie.

“Asiamarine extends its gratitude to all participants, sponsors and partners for making the Beneteau Cup a spectacular success,” the dealership stated. “With the overwhelming support received, the Beneteau Cup is set to become a flagship annual event in the Hong Kong sailing calendar.”

Headquartered in Hong Kong with offices in Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore, Asiamarine specialises in sales of new and pre-owned yachts, yacht management in Asia-Pacific, and charters across the world, also specialising in superyachts as Fraser Asia.

The Italian superyacht builder has splashed Juno’s 7, the first unit of the 145ft, Cassetta-designed Class 44M.

Benetti celebrates the launch of Juno’s 7 in Viareggio

Benetti has launched Juno’s 7 at its shipyard in Viareggio, with the 144ft 7in superyacht representing the first hull in the new Class 44M series designed inside and out by Cassetta Yacht Designers. The fibreglass model is based on the same hull as the Diamond 44M and is the successor to the former model, another product of Giorgio Cassetta’s design studio and whose first hull launched in 2020.

Daniela Petrozzi, Benetti’s Sales Director, said: “This is an important moment for Benetti because the first Class 44M has touched the water. This yacht is our fibreglass flagship and represents Benetti’s excellence and tradition combined with a modern interpretation. It’s the result of the careful work of Cassetta Yacht Designers, who have been able to renew the external lines and reinterpret the style of the interiors with great skills.”

The four-deck Class 44M is designed for long cruises and is the result of a study to provide privacy and plenty of storage space. Fitted with two 1,400hp MAN units, the yacht has a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,100 nautical miles at 11 knots.

Benetti believes “the level of soundproofing puts this 44m yacht at the top of the category”, with state-of-the-art technology including the use of floating floors and bulkheads, and flexible transmission couplings. High-efficiency air circulation is supplied by an air-conditioning and treatment system featuring six changes per hour.

Benetti, Class 44M, Cassetta, Viareggio, Daniela Petrozzi

Juno’s 7 is the first Class 44M, designed by Cassetta

The main deck is home to a spacious lounge with views of the water on both sides, day head, galley and the owner’s cabin. The lower deck contains the four guest cabins and the crew area, while aft is the beach club and a garage to port. The upper deck features a large aft deck, generous interior living space, optional VIP cabin and the helm station. Above is the sun deck offering 102sqm of deck space.

As well as the exterior styling and interior design, Cassetta handled the décor in partnership with Benetti’s architects. The designer has defined the yacht as ‘relaxing’, in line with the brief to create informal settings “where the owner and guests can enjoy the ultimate in relaxation and comfort”, according to Benetti.

The use of large transparent surfaces, such as the mirrors on the hull sides in the main lounge, help reflect the light and the water, so brightening the interior areas. A special focus on the selection of the materials led to the use of trowelled resin for the bathroom surfaces instead of marble, which is used exclusively on the main deck for the basins in the owner’s bathroom and the day head.

The varieties of FSC-certified wood used are also the result of an in-depth study. The antique elm used for the interior flooring on all decks preserves the natural knots in the wood, with planks of different widths and lengths taking advantage of every part of the tree. The striped ash used for the walls was “selected with great care to obtain the ideal pattern for this yacht”.

The Class 44M is among several families of models produced by Benetti including Motopanfilo (37M, 45M), Oasis (34M, 40M), B.Yond (40M, 57M), B.Now (50M, 60M, 67M, 72M), B.Century (55M, 62M, 68M, 75M), B.Loft (65M) and Custom, which range from 50m to above 100m.

Van der Valk’s Dutch courage

From humble small-boat production in the Netherlands conceived by founder Wim van der Valk to this year’s management buyout when he stepped down, the Van der Valk shipyard, now known for its customised hulls, builds on the bravery at its core.

Three hulls in build at Van der Valk’s assembly halls in Waalwijk, The Netherlands

With the August 2024 announcement by Van der Valk shipyard that it was embarking on the new 35m tailor-made yacht Jangada – the third hull of the same name for the same St Tropez-based owner – there is no doubt that both craftsmanship and design have loyal patronage. Custom designs are the lifeblood of the Dutch yard, and a jet-stream pool on the aft flybridge is among feature requests for the latest Jangada.

The following month, during this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the newly launched 34m One was awarded the accolade of Most Achieved Yacht at the 2024 World Yachts Trophies.

The second Jangada, 32m, leaves the detailing hangar

Situated an hour south of Amsterdam in Waalwijk, in the south-central province of North Brabant, the Van der Valk facility has an office and seven state-of-the-art production halls.

Van der Valk is one of a handful of yards in the world with the capacity and flexibility to build fully bespoke superyachts between 25 and 45m in length above the waterline. Its reputation for yachts of premium quality has been honed over more than five decades of evolution that began with humble vessel builds and led to the offering of custom production over a decade ago, dealing with clients directly or through their representatives.

Launched in May 2024, the 34m One went on to win an award during the Cannes Yachting Festival

Van der Valk applies cutting-edge solutions, systems and materials to meet a client’s budget, and shipyard staff are encouraged to follow training courses and research new possibilities and applications. This ensures that their technical and client-service know-how is up to date. Today, its yard builds high-quality aluminium hulls in-house and takes care of all outfitting and finishing.

THE HISTORY

The shipyard founder, a passionate yachtsman and watersport enthusiast, Wim van der Valk launched the eponymous company in 1967. Over more than half a century, with the reputation for quality builds emerging across five model lines in the 1970s, Van der Valk progressed with a range of striking steel and aluminium motoryachts, attaining popularity and respect from other Dutch shipyards.

Founder Wim van der Valk retired in early 2024 but still serves as President Emeritus

In the mid-1980s, it launched the Vitesse series – steel and aluminium semi-displacement motoryachts for the high-end segment, which commanded high resale value.

Embracing new design, tech and materials is part of the yard’s signature modus operandi. The 2015 launch of the 37m Santa Maria T, the world’s first motoryacht to feature a two-axis fin antiroll damping system, was a great example of its forward-thinking philosophy.

Van der Valk was also one of the first yards to acknowledge the potential of the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS propulsion when it was introduced, developing a special hull and new models for this drive system.

Following its series in the 2010s, with the Raised Pilothouse, Flybridge, Explorer and BeachClub lines, as more owner additions and specifications became part of the sales pattern, semi-custom lines were offered, which then evolved into today’s fully-custom build options. Alternatively, customisation of the general finish and interiors of some existing current models – the Edge 65 and models of the BeachClub line – are also available.

On April 18, 2024, a management buyout of the founder’s shares in Van der Valk shipyard took place, financially supported by a collective of experienced yacht owners who previously commissioned three custom superyachts from the yard: the 27.5m Leven, a customised 19.6m Edge 65 and the 34m Lady Lene.

Today, Van der Valk appeals to clients around the world who are looking to build a luxury yacht up to 45m in length. The yard’s fully-custom options allow the creation of an entirely bespoke superstructure and interior, with a selection of propulsion types, swim platforms, balconies and bars, among other features.

Van der Valk partners with top Dutch naval architecture and design talent in the premium yacht and superyacht studios, including Guido de Groot, Carla Guilhem, Ginton Naval Architects, Cor D Rover, Diana Yacht Design and Van Oossanen. Clients are also welcome to bring their own designers into the tailor-made motoryacht creation process.

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT

With a full order book stretching well into 2027, including the largest superyacht build to date – the 40m Project Evo – confidence in the future appears positive. Totalling more than 9,000sqm of state-of the-art facilities, the yard opened its seventh construction hall in November 2023.

Enrico Theuns, Bram Kooltjes and Yoeri Bijker took over the shipyard’s management in April 2024

The management team of Enrico Theuns, Bram Kooltjes and Yoeri Bijker draw on decades of combined experience in the high-end yachting industry and continue to enjoy the ongoing support of President Emeritus Wim van der Valk as an advisor to the board.

“The significant capital investment will enable Van der Valk to continue growing our unique niche in the market for bespoke yachts between 25 and 45m,” commented Yoeri Bijker, Head of Sales, at the time of the acquisition.

Van der Valk’s facilities cover over 9,000sqm

“The new primary shareholders fully understand our yard’s ethos having built several award-winning yachts with us and are committed to ensuring Van der Valk retains its Dutch structure, heritage and quality. We have a solid financial future as an independent entity with various options available for further expansion. Wim’s unrivalled legacy could not be in safer hands.”

BREAKDOWN OF CURRENT SHIPYARD FACILITIES

Three assembly halls include a state-of-the-art one opened in 2017 that measures 42m x 36m, with a height of 16m, enabling builds of motoryachts up to 40m in length with up to three decks.

The second hall covers 42.5m x 25.6m and, as well as building boats between 20-40m, contains a standalone carpentry factory and is used for exterior painting of yachts above 25m.

Hall three measures 35.5m x 36.4m and is dedicated to the construction and outfitting of yachts ranging from 15-25m. A new facility, hall seven, is 50m x 50m. Yachts below 25m are painted in Van der Valk’s exterior painting facility, which measures 30.5m by 22.7m and houses the paint coordination office.

Launched in 2023, the 34m D Rolli was delivered in 2024

There is also a 17.2m x 13.4m interior spray painting hall, used for smaller exterior elements and non-fixed interior components, including varnishing and veneering as well as complete repainting.

Van der Valk’s premises include a paved open area of 7,000sqm and there is access to the river via 120m of dock, which includes a crane with a capacity of 30 tonnes. The warehouse is the main location where parts are delivered.

Van der Valk practices ‘just-in-time delivery’, which means that the necessary components arrive when they are effectively needed. Just-in-time delivery eliminates excess inventory and minimises stock-related overhead costs. The warehouse is 35.5m x 15.6m. With such facilities and an expanding order book in the past few years, the evolution of this shipyard appears to be in good shape.

“The Van der Valk owner today is international. We have clients from Asia – Hong Kong and Japan – but also North America and South America, and from the EU. In the past we often worked directly with the clients. These days it’s often with owners’ representatives, family offices and law firms,” Bijker explained.

“Projects have become larger and all the requests more complex. We adapted to this over the years, and today we have everything in line and all the specialists in house to serve our high-demanding UHNWI clientele.”

The forward-facing sunset lounge on the bow offers a comfortable private retreat

Spanning 38.76m in length and featuring a generous 8m beam, the Navetta 38 boasts a sleek, commanding exterior profile, embodying timeless Italian sophistication. With a volume of 299GT, it maximises space across four decks, balancing expansive exterior areas with sun-drenched interiors, making the Navetta 38 ideal for long-range cruising or coastal escapes.

AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE AND EXTERIOR DESIGN

The Navetta 38’s exterior is a masterclass in understated luxury, blending traditional design with modern aesthetics. Salvetti’s fluid lines create a harmonious silhouette, while clean, sculpted surfaces lend the yacht both strength and elegance. Every curve is crafted with tactile refinement, offering an inviting form that does not compromise functionality.

The full-beam beach club measures over 70sqm, complete with fold-out terraces

Guests can enjoy seamless indoor-outdoor living, with nearly 465sqm of total surface area spread across the three levels above the lower deck.

The extensive use of glass in the parapets of the main-deck cockpit enhances this integration, providing uninterrupted sea views. Whether relaxing in the aft cockpit, lounging in the beach club or dining al fresco on the sundeck, guests are always connected to their surroundings.

The Navetta 38 interior harnesses natural light, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic sea views and blurring the line between inside and out. A ‘café au lait’ colour palette of beige and ivory, alongside noble natural materials like oak and teak, enhances the sense of serenity and spaciousness, while sharp edges are banished and soft curves dominate.

True to the Custom Line ethos, the layout balances generous social spaces with more private retreats. The 42sqm main deck saloon features custom-made furniture by B&B Italia’s Maxalto, designed to echo the yacht’s fluid exterior lines.

With oak parquet floors and soft leather furnishings, the space exudes an elegant yet unpretentious ambience, perfect for both formal gatherings and relaxed lounging. The dining area, seating up to 12, is equally suited for formal meals while maintaining the informal, coastal chic that defines the yacht’s interior.

Hull infusion on the Sunreef 43M Eco

Sunreef Yachts has announced the successful completion of the 43M Eco’s composite hull infusion process (click for video), which it described as “the biggest single-shot hull infusion project in yachting history”.

Francis Lapp, Sunreef’s founder and President, said: “We achieved an important milestone on our journey to build a truly groundbreaking yacht. The scale of the hull-infusion project is unique in the industry, and underscores our pioneering role in shaping the future of energy-efficient yachting.”

Francis Lapp founded Sunreef in Poland in 2002

Under construction at the builder’s main shipyard in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast, the Sunreef 43M Eco is set to become the world’s largest electric catamaran. The biggest model to date in the builder’s Eco series, the 43m-long hull has a 15.4m beam and 1,700sqm of composite surface area.

The yacht’s innovative design features a custom-engineered foam core that reduces weight while improving performance. Infusion produces a stronger, lighter hull due to more even distribution of resin, which is sucked into the fibreglass and coring using vacuum pressure. The unmoulding of the hull is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

Designed to accommodate up to 12 guests, the hull will incorporate over 120sqm of integrated solar panels, almost half of the total of 250sqm across the entire yacht.

The advanced solar technology and electric propulsion are among the superyacht’s emission-free, energy-saving features, with Sunreef stating that the 43M Eco “will redefine the superyacht experience, making it cleaner, more responsible, and energy-efficient”.

With a scientific background and a deep commitment to craftsmanship, Valtaud is pushing the boundaries of tradition while ensuring Martell’s future in a competitive luxury market. Raised in the heart of the Cognac region, Valtaud comes from a family with a longstanding legacy of grape growing spanning several generations. Immersed in this environment, Valtaud quickly realised that the luxury and quality of Cognac are rooted in the terroir — the distinctive soil and the unique, limited region where the grapes are cultivated. He soon understood that the deep connection to nature, along with the generations of expertise passed down by those who work the land, is what makes Cognac truly exceptional.

Speaking exclusively to LUXUO, he shares insights into his unique approach to cognac-making, the challenges of modernisation, the debut of the debut of Martell‘s private cask programme – Les Futs Uniques de Martell and his vision for Martell’s legacy. To the right sits Martell Senior Master Blender Christian Guerin and to the right is Pernod Ricard’s Chris Maloney, the Global Head of Prestige Delivery.

With the role of Martell Cellar Master, clue us in to how you nurtured your expertise in terroir, distillation and blending.

Becoming a Cellar Master is a long journey, often taking around ten years of training. I was born in the heart of the Cognac region, and my family’s legacy spans generations of grape growers. As a Cellar Master, you inherit this wealth of knowledge. From the moment I began my training, I understood the importance of terroir, distillation, and the role each plays in crafting the final product. I am also a distiller myself, having learned the craft at a young age through my own family vineyard. Distillation is where we concentrate all the qualities of the wine, and from there, blending and aging take place.

The Cellar Master is the only role within the company that oversees the process from vine to glass. My job is to ensure quality at every stage, from working with the producers to selecting the best liquid for future creations. I am constantly thinking decades ahead — at least 40 years into the future. When creating special collections or new products, it’s essential to plan long-term because what I create today will be used in products many years from now. My responsibility is not only to preserve this legacy but to prepare for the future by ensuring that the next generation of liquid is ready for crafting exceptional Cognacs.

As the ninth generation of Martell Cellar Masters, what challenges did you encounter while upholding the traditions of cognac-making in a rapidly evolving market?

As the ninth-generation Martell Cellar Master, my focus has always been on preparing for the future — not just for myself, but for the next generation. Early on, I realised that my role wasn’t just about choosing a successor but about creating an environment where multiple individuals could eventually step into that leadership position. My team has grown from just three people when I started to eight today, reflecting our strategy to ensure the preservation of Martell’s traditions while preparing for the future.

One of the challenges has been balancing tradition with the rapidly evolving market. Becoming a master blender or cellar master requires extensive experience — often taking over a decade — and it’s vital to have a long-term vision. I’ve worked to build a collaborative environment, unlike my predecessor who worked alone. I believe in fostering teamwork and sharing knowledge, which is essential to carrying on the legacy of Cognac-making while adapting to modern needs.

What sets me apart is my scientific background — I have a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology — which gives me a different perspective. I’m not interested in preserving tradition just for tradition’s sake. My approach is to push boundaries and look ahead. I’ve developed products that challenge traditional AOC guidelines for Cognac, and I believe it’s my job as a leader to foresee trends and create new experiences, much like how the iPhone was created before people even realised they needed it. In this way, I try to shape the future rather than simply react to it.

How does Martell differentiate itself in a competitive luxury spirits market?

Martell is the oldest of the major Cognac houses, and we take great pride in being pioneers in the industry. In fact, we essentially created Cognac as it is known today. From the very beginning, we defined our style, and while other houses have had to develop their own unique methods, we were the first. Our style has remained true since day one, and that’s the legacy of Martel, which we continue to uphold.

Technically speaking, Martell is renowned for utilising the full range of terroirs, but our signature Cognac is most notably influenced by one particular area — the Borderies. It’s the smallest and rarest of the growing regions, and it gives our Cognac its signature smoothness. In fact, compared to our competitors, Martell Cognac is known for being exceptionally smooth, and it’s also free from the bitterness that can sometimes be present in other blends.

When it comes to flavour profiles, have you noticed any trends in consumer preferences?

Taste changes and that’s why we change. A key element to our distinctive taste is the oak we use for aging. We exclusively select the finest French oak — specifically the Faucher oak — which is prized for its quality. Why do we choose this? It’s because the best ingredients lead to the best products. Unlike other producers who often use Limousin oak — which requires 100-120 years to mature — our Faucher oak takes at least 180 to 200 years to fully mature. This long-growing period allows the wood to impart a much more refined, delicate influence on the Cognac.

A few years ago, we introduced a new VSOP in Singapore and across Asia. This was in response to evolving consumer trends, as people are increasingly moving away from bitterness. To adapt, we reduced the influence of wood, as the bitterness that comes from the wood is less desirable. It’s a similar shift to what we see in the wine industry as well.

At Martell, time is everything. From the aging process to the selection of barrels, we are responsible for managing the passage of time in every drop of our Cognac. We’ve been perfecting our craft for over 300 years, and it’s this wealth of experience, combined with our exceptional ingredients, that defines Martel as a truly extraordinary brand.

Let’s discuss Martell’s new private cask program — Les Futs Uniques de Martell. How has the introduction of this program impacted Martell’s overall brand strategy?

The idea behind this collection was to reconnect with the origins of cognac. For over 200 years, Martel sold cognac in casks, and this collection brings that tradition back. The unique aspect of the collection is that consumers can purchase cognac in casks that are still aging — something that hasn’t been available for over 100 years. Additionally, this pure, unblended cognac is a return to how Martel originally produced its spirits, contrasting with the modern practice of blending.

The collection is a tribute to our history, highlighting the importance of terroir and how different soils create distinctive flavours. It’s a chance to experience the legacy of Martel while embracing a touch of audacity. We aim to offer a truly immersive experience at Château Chantal, where guests can select and customise their own casks. The experience also includes a gastronomic journey with Michelin-starred chefs to elevate the enjoyment of Martel cognac, ensuring the perfect pairing. Ultimately, this collection is about offering something exceptional and deeply personal to our consumers.

Les Fûts Uniques – GC 32 YO 46ABV

How do you see the program catering to contemporary consumer preferences for personalised experiences?

Luxury is often about exclusivity — everyone desires luxury products, but not everyone can afford them. For those who can’t, we offer special editions, which still allow them to experience the brand’s essence. Martel is renowned for its cognac, particularly for its exclusivity, with the oldest and most prestigious stock of eaux-de-vie. We’ve carefully preserved this exceptional stock, hidden away in our cellars for years. This gives us the legitimacy to create such a collection.

While only a select few may be able to purchase these rare products, we also offer a range that lets consumers be part of the legacy, enjoying the same expertise and savoir-faire, albeit in a different form. It may not be the most prestigious option, but it’s still a part of Martel’s rich heritage, ensuring that everyone can experience a piece of this exceptional legacy.

How important is legacy storytelling in conveying the value of Martell and Les Futs Uniques de Martel to consumers?

When creating cognac, I focus on evoking emotion through all the senses. I listen to music while creating — classical for traditional cognac, and rock or rap for younger ones. The key is to engage all senses: sight, sound, and touch. I aim to create a connection through emotion rather than technicality. While we often focus on explaining the technical aspects of cognac, I believe emotions are universal. For example, when I describe cognac, I focus on the feelings it evokes rather than the technical details, since emotions can be understood universally, regardless of culture or language.

Within the whisky industry, how do you balance traditional craftsmanship with modern production techniques?

As a researcher, my role involves managing a team of cellar masters, master blenders, and researchers to create and age cognac. We’re also working on adapting to climate change by developing new distillation methods, creating grape varieties suited to changing climates, and updating our warehouses to withstand these changes. While preserving the unique qualities of our terroir, we must innovate to ensure sustainability. Cognac production is heavily regulated, and changing distillation methods requires convincing others that it won’t affect the product’s quality. I’ve spent years working on alternatives to traditional energy sources, proving they don’t impact taste.

While innovation is crucial, cognac production is tightly regulated, particularly around distillation, which is one of the most controlled processes in the spirits industry. Unlike whisky, where there’s more flexibility, we must work within strict rules. Changing production methods requires convincing colleagues and competitors that these adjustments won’t compromise the quality of the final product. For example, transitioning from gas-based distillation to more sustainable energy sources took five years of effort to demonstrate that it wouldn’t affect the taste. It’s about balancing tradition with the need for sustainability and ensuring that cognac production continues to evolve while maintaining the highest standards.

Les Fûts Uniques – GC 30 YO

You play a key role in overseeing the production and maturation of eau de vie. What role does sustainability play in your production process?

We’ve also changed the way we manage our vineyards, aiming to have a minimal environmental impact. We’ve fully integrated biodiversity initiatives and have stopped using chemical products. This approach is crucial for us because our CEO often says that we’re producing products today that will be enjoyed by future generations. When you taste a cognac like the Cordon Bleu — which is at least 10 years old but often more like 20 or 25 years old — you realise that we must plan decades ahead. The expectations of consumers will only rise, so if we focus solely on the demands of today, we’ll miss what the future requires.

This is why we’ve been prioritising sustainability and environmental responsibility for so long. We are deeply connected to our terroir, and because cognac is a natural product, it’s our responsibility to protect it for the future.

On a personal note, what has been your proudest achievement at Martell so far?

I’m extremely proud of what I’ve achieved, particularly in building a team that didn’t exist before. Prior to my time, Martel didn’t have a dedicated R&D department, but now we have a group of researchers — not just cognac specialists — who work alongside our traditional experts. When innovation meets tradition, something truly exceptional happens.

I believe this collaborative approach, combining research and legacy, will be my lasting legacy at Martel. I’ve also always wanted to bring an artistic touch to my creations. For me, emotion is key — every drop of cognac should evoke a feeling. I want to go beyond the traditional and inspire dreams through music, colours, painting, and even cuisine. It’s about creating something that stirs the soul.

Maison Martell has restated its commitment to keeping local heritage at the heart of the House. How do your personal values align with Martell’s mission?

For me, cognac is undeniably French, and embodies the French art de vivre. However, it’s important to remember that while we are based in France, our founder was actually British. From the very beginning, Martell has been a fusion of cultures, which is a key element of our identity. The first shipment to Singapore took place in 1868, so our connection with Asia goes back a long way.

Today, Singapore has become a hub where cultures from around the world converge, and this is truly exceptional for us. It allows us to stay attuned to the desires and trends of various cultures while preparing for the future. In terms of sustainability and responsibility, I believe Singapore is the ideal place to emphasise these values. It’s no coincidence that Singapore is now the centre of our strategy for Asia, as it perfectly embodies the future we envision.

Pershing has revealed details and designs of the GTX70, the third and most compact model in its Sport Utility Yacht range. The series kicked off with the launch of the GTX116 in 2023 and was followed by the GTX80, which had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

Equipped with three 900mhp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1200 engines, the GTX70 is expected to have a top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed of 30 knots.

The CE Class A yacht is a design collaboration between Vallicelli Design, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department, with the hull built at the Ferretti Group Plug and Mould facility. Pershing believes the yacht has 30 per cent more exterior areas and 10 per cent more interior spaces for guests compared with other models of the same size.

The exterior design echoes the styling of the larger models in Pershing’s Gran Turismo line and includes a sleek, arch-shaped deckhouse. A vertical bow and its connection with the keel line “give the boat’s silhouette an unprecedented lightness and elegance reminiscent of sporty sailing boats”, according to Pershing.

The slightly convex sheer line runs from bow to stern and joins with the aft bulwarks, which can fold out to provide two lateral terraces and create a 23sqm beach club. The waterside area includes an integrated, aft-facing sofa or sunpad and a high-low swim platform. The foredeck has a large sunbathing area, while moveable cushions can unveil a table when needed.

The sportsbridge offers 16sqm of space and contains a triple-seat helm station, wet bar, an L-shaped sofa around a dining table, and a large sunpad aft. Shade can be provided by an electrically operated bimini top with a prepreg carbon structure.

Three steps up from the beach club, the covered aft cockpit has a three-sided sofa, while the aft galley has an up-down pocket window that can be lowered to link the outdoor area with the interior. The saloon has two inverted L-shaped sofas facing each other.

The lower deck includes three en-suite guest cabins “designed with input from a study that mapped the volumes and identified innovative solutions for maximum space optimisation”, Pershing stated. The study also led to the creation of a laundry room that can be entered from the hall.

“This new Pershing is the result of a unique design effort to take full advantage of the available surface areas and add value to the exterior spaces, offering even more contact with the water,” Pershing stated.

“The transitions between exterior and interior are even more fluid, increasing liveability and creating a continuous open space, above all on the main deck. Every space on board Pershing GTX70 is designed for maximum comfort, bringing volumes together in a way that creates an experience of incredible comfort.”

Boat Lagoon Yachting has represented Princess in Southeast Asia since 1994

Whether you’re a new or frequent visitor to Thailand, the value of privacy and novelty rises quickly in popular destinations such as Phuket. To escape the island’s crowds or the buzzing temptations on offer, chartering a yacht for a day or overnight is a perfect way to enjoy time with friends and family as you explore the unique geography, food and culture that lies within the vast and varied Andaman Sea.

Boat Lagoon Yachting, the reputable broker and charter agency started three decades ago, has a number of British-built Princess Yacht vessels in its fleet, due to being the exclusive dealer of Princess Yachts in Southeast Asia since 1994.

Maritimus, a Princess 78MY

The Princess 78 Motor Yacht Maritimus is a sophisticated and contemporary luxury vessel designed for exceptional charter experiences in Phuket. The spacious flybridge offers panoramic views, and the yacht comfortably accommodates up to 22 guests for day trips and eight guests overnight.

Other boat brands are also sold and chartered by Boat Lagoon Yachting – such as the smaller, dynamic Sacs Strider chase boats. And just like the company’s new or pre-owned larger yachts, smaller boats are usually paired with crews that are very familiar with the area.

Here we look at some of the accessible areas around the waters of Krabi that allow charter or sales clients to feel like they can really relax, switch off and enjoy life above and below the pristine waterline.

PHANG NGA BAY

Spanning some 400sqkm, Phang Nga Bay lies between Phuket and southern Thailand’s mainland. Also known as Ao Phang Nga National Park, it’s characterised by vertiginous karst limestone cliffs and rock formations that rise from the coastline and islands, as well as mangrove forests.

Among the bay’s islands are Koh Tapu, known as James Bond Island for its appearance in a Bond film, and Koh Phanak, which is visited for its caves and lagoons that can be explored by tender or kayak. The waters in this area are dotted with coral reefs that can be explored by snorkel or scuba.

Beyond this cinematic scenery, the adventure extends to Koh Panyee, a captivating Muslim fishing village built on stilts over the water. Here, guests can enjoy an authentic seafood lunch amid the charm of local culture.

KO PHAYAM, RANONG

Often called the ‘Maldives of Thailand’, Koh Phayam is an idyllic place to escape to, as it offers pristine, white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters, perfect for a luxury yacht cruise. This island gem’s tranquil bays and cultural richness bring a ‘private paradise’ experience.

This eastern bay offers boutique accommodation, shops, and local transportation options. At the end of the beach, Wat Koh Phayam – a serene temple nestled by the sea – provides a unique cultural touchpoint and a picturesque sunrise viewpoint.

On the island’s western side lies Ao Khao Khwai, or ‘Buffalo Bay’ because it has a distinctive, curved shoreline that resembles a buffalo horn. The bay’s secluded beauty and natural rock formations such as the remarkable Hin Talu create a perfect setting for sunset views.

Further south, Moken village offers an opportunity to glimpse local coastal life. The widest and longest bay, Ao Yai spans about 4km and provides an ideal setting for water sports such as surfing.

A CRUISE IN ULTRA-LUXURY TO MYANMAR

The Princess X95 and Y95 models are exceptionally popular choices among Boat Lagoon Yachting’s brokerage and charter clients for extended cruises across Southeast Asia, including exclusive routes from Thailand to Myanmar.

The 50Steel maintains the clean, elegant lines characteristic of Sanlorenzo yachts

I was particularly eager to visit the Sanlorenzo 50Steel after receiving a call from a broker who had previewed it just before the Monaco Yacht Show kicked off. He waxed lyrical about its unique layout and styling.

When the day came for my visit to the show, the weather was miserable – pouring rain and grey skies – but that didn’t stop a queue of eager visitors from forming to step aboard this highly anticipated yacht. With my interest piqued, I couldn’t wait to see what all the fuss was about as I stepped aboard.

Launched in May 2024 at Sanlorenzo’s La Spezia facilities, the 49.9m superyacht marks a significant leap forward in eco-friendly marine technology. It is the first superyacht to feature the modular Reformer-Fuel Cell system, capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen, and then into electricity, to power the yacht’s hotel needs.

Sanlorenzo, 50Steel, fuel-cell, reformer, HER, future, Siemens Energy, La Spezia, Hidden Engine Room, Monaco Yacht Show

Siemens Energy developed the Reformer-Fuel Cell system

This revolutionary system, developed with Siemens Energy, allows the yacht to operate almost entirely emission-free, generating up to 100kW of power. While the placement of this green technology for the hotel loads in the bow slightly reduces the size of the master suite, it brilliantly ‘future-proofs’ the yacht for 2030 environmental regulations and covers approximately 90 per cent of the yacht’s typical energy needs while at anchor.

Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo Executive Chairman, said: “During my career, I believe I have made a meaningful contribution in terms of innovation in yachting. When I thought we could be the first, in the history of the industry, to build a yacht which could produce electricity without releasing carbon into the air, I really felt it was like we had created something very special that was leading us towards the future.

“I’m very proud to say that 50Steel is the first superyacht in the world with the Reformer-Fuel Cell system, and she marks an important milestone for Sanlorenzo, for innovation and for sustainability.”

CUTTING-EDGE TECH: HER SYSTEM AND LAYOUT INNOVATION

The 50Steel also introduces Sanlorenzo’s patented Hidden Engine Room (HER) system, which dramatically redefines how space is interpreted aboard a superyacht. By moving the propulsion systems to a horizontal configuration on the lower deck, the HER apparatus unlocks significant space for leisure areas and maintains the yacht’s gross tonnage at under 500GT.

Zuccon International Project handled exterior design

This innovation makes it possible to create the expansive Ocean Lounge, which directly connects the aft beach club, featuring a stunning pool and folding side-sea terraces, with the yacht’s four guest cabins, gym, and spa on the same level.

Guest cabins are well-appointed, with all but the master suite situated on the lower deck with direct access to the Ocean Lounge, ensuring guests enjoy easy access to the yacht’s main lounging, leisure and wellness areas.

The vessel’s architecture spans four staggered levels, creating substantial volumes with minimal partitions or barriers. The flow between interior spaces is seamless, from the lower deck’s gym and spa to the upper deck’s second saloon, while net ceiling heights range from 2.1m to an impressive 3.35m.

Aft decks cascade downward to the beach club

These staggered levels are interconnected through a series of light-filled staircases, allowing for an uninterrupted experience across all areas. This results in an expansive yet harmonious feel throughout the yacht, making it a standout in terms of both spatial optimisation and luxury.

The Sanlorenzo 50Steel offers an unparalleled onboard experience, prioritising both luxury and comfort. One of the yacht’s key features is the 120sqm beach club, complete with three open terraces and two pools – one at the aft and another on the sundeck.

The main deck is the heart of the yacht, featuring an elegant saloon designed for relaxation and entertainment. The centrally located dining area is another highlight, offering ample space for unforgettable gatherings with family and friends.

Unusually, the master stateroom is situated on the main deck and is a sanctuary of privacy and elegance. It features a private office, two dressing rooms, and a generous ensuite, offering the perfect balance of seclusion and comfort for the owner.

The suite’s aesthetic combines dark walnut walls, Japanese-style screens, and bespoke wallpaper, a serene and very private retreat for the owner that creates a warm, minimalist, sophisticated ambience.

Designed by Piero Lissoni, the yacht’s interior combines classic and contemporary elements, exuding a sophisticated yet understated loft-style elegance. Dark wood panelling, coffered ceilings, and Lissoni’s signature clean lines give the 50Steel a luxurious, modern but warm welcoming ambience.

Lissoni also employed advanced 3D design technology for this project, allowing precise control over every detail, and ensuring his aesthetic vision was flawlessly realised.

PIONEERING SUSTAINABILITY AT SEA

The 50Steel represents a paradigm shift in superyacht design, especially in its approach to sustainability. Its Reformer-Fuel Cell system allows the yacht to remain anchored for extended periods without relying on diesel generators, dramatically reducing emissions. This pioneering technology marks the 50Steel as a game changer in luxury yacht carbon-neutral cruising.

Additionally, Sanlorenzo’s dedication to responsible development extends beyond technological advancements.

The shipyard actively supports marine preservation initiatives through the Fondazione Sanlorenzo, providing tools and opportunities to preserve and enhance the socio-cultural, economic and environmental heritage of Italy’s minor islands and promotes cultural enrichment through Sanlorenzo Arts, headquartered in Venice.

AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE AND THE VISION BEHIND THE DESIGN

Designed by Zuccon International Project, the exterior of the 50Steel maintains the clean, elegant lines characteristic of Sanlorenzo yachts, seamlessly integrating complex interior architecture with a simple and balanced profile.

As Bernardo Zuccon explained, “The real challenge was to interpret a boat of such design complexity while maintaining balance and simplicity. Our aim was to create harmony and balance, even for the casual observer.”

In the lower-deck gym, chocolate-brown wood tones are brightened with generous glazing and interior mood lighting

The connection between interior and exterior spaces is achieved effortlessly through the yacht’s open plan and thoughtful design elements, creating a fluid dialogue between indoor and outdoor living areas. Sanlorenzo’s design philosophy emphasises maximum liveability and seamless transitions between spaces, ensuring every inch of the yacht is optimised for comfort and utility.

TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE

The 50Steel doesn’t just excel in luxury and sustainability; it also delivers high performance. Powered by two MAN D2862-LE489 engines, generating 1066kW each, the yacht achieves a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and a top speed of 16 knots. Its impressive range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots makes it ideal for extended voyages.

Sanlorenzo continues to push the boundaries of yacht design and technology with the 50Steel, embodying a pioneering spirit that will undoubtedly inspire the entire industry. The 50Steel goes to show that the future of yachting is here, with luxury design redefined and sustainability at its core.

Greenline’s new technology sidelines generators

Greenline’s new technology sidelines generators

The Slovenian shipyard’s Responsible Power Pack uses a bigger battery package and alternators to replace generators.

Greenline Yachts has developed a Responsible Power Pack that negates the need for generators across its entire range of yachts from 39-58ft. The new technology combines a bigger battery package and alternators, so a generator is not needed on diesel models.

All Greenline yachts are offered with either diesel, hybrid (sixth-generation H-Drive) or electric propulsion, while solar panels and lithium batteries are standard on all models, hugely reducing emissions.

All the Slovenian shipyard’s boats will now offer at least 48 hours of silent battery power at anchor or while docking, so owners can run the entire hotel load including full-power air-conditioning without the noise, vibration and smell of a generator.

Instead of a generator, Greenline can fit a high-powered alternator that can take power from the running engine to recharge a large lithium battery bank. This enables the yacht to arrive at its destination with full batteries, ready for days of silent operation at anchor.

“When energy is used efficiently, the autonomy of the yacht can be extended for days by using solar power to cover hotel loads such as induction cooking and lighting,” Greenline stated.

The move is particularly appealing for owners who opt for a conventionally diesel-powered Greenline yacht, but still wish to reduce emissions, consumption and noise at anchor.

Vladimir Zinchenko, Greenline’s owner, said: “For conventional yachts, eliminating the generator is nothing short of revolutionary. There’s barely a yacht on the market in Greenline’s class of length and luxury capable of doing this. My mission has always been to further the concept of responsible yachting, and this shift towards using high-powered alternators and batteries will save tonnes of CO2 emissions.”

To illustrate the effectiveness of the new technology, the shipyard has cited the Greenline 45, its best-selling model. The yacht previously needed an 11kW generator to cover hotel loads, consuming about four litres of fuel per hour and often running constantly to power air-conditioning. This amounted to consumption of nearly 200 litres over a 48-hour period at anchor.

Greenline 45 Fly

Fitted with the new Responsible Power Pack, the Greenline 45 would require just nine hours of motoring to fully recharge the 34.2kWh batteries, giving emissions-free power on board for more than 48 hours.

To produce its 6kW of power, the alternator places additional load on the engine, which marginally increases fuel consumption for that period. However, when compared side by side, the new system slashes the emissions of covering hotel loads by up to 88 per cent.

Responsible Power Pack’s effect on Greenline 45

Luca Raumland, Greenline’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “The figures are unequivocal. Our Responsible Power Pack can eliminate a staggering amount of the carbon emissions associated with running a yacht at anchor.

“By tapping the engine’s spare power when the yacht is under way, we can make non-hybrid models almost as efficient to operate as their hybrid alternatives. In fact, with careful use of the air-con, the solar panels fitted as standard to every yacht can fully replenish the batteries during the day and keep the boat emissions-free at anchor indefinitely.”

Greenline’s focuses on sustainability throughout its design and production. This includes ‘super-displacement’ hulls developed and tested to provide a smooth, ride, stability and efficiency at low and high speeds, while the high-tech foam sandwich used to strengthen the hull comes from recycled PET plastic.

Interior of Greenline 45 Fly

Lay-up is through vacuum infusion, ensuring precise material use, with the use of vinyl-ester resin allowing a five-year warranty against osmosis. The yard is currently experimenting with natural fibres and green resins in the lay-up.

The shipyard is also reducing waste and power usage on production lines. Any offcuts of wood from the interior fit-out are collected and pressed into heating pellets, while leftover foam is reused by a neighbouring company to produce home insulation. Every new Greenline yacht delivered is equipped with biodegradable green yacht wash that does no harm to the ocean.
