One of this year’s most-anticipated new models, the Prestige X70 is arguably the most exciting new motor yacht from France in 2020.

The X70 is both Prestige’s flagship and the first model in a new X-Line

Created in partnership with Garroni Design, the Groupe Beneteau brand’s new flagship is the start of a new X-Line distinct from the complementary F-Line flybridge and S-Line sportfly ranges.

Most notably, the X70 doesn’t have side decks, so the saloon with central galley is full beam. The interior also starts further forward than usual due to the extended space given to a huge cockpit.

The flybridge can be enclosed, while its vertical windshield and the main-deck’s reverse windshield contribute to the explorer looks. Duvivier sofas and Foglizzo leather feature in an upgraded interior, while lower-deck options include three full-beam double cabins or two doubles and two twins.

Beneteau has released the Fly version of the Antares 11

Beneteau’s new models include the Antares 11 Fly, Gran Turismo 36 and Flyer 9 Sundeck, which features an opening side deck to port. The 11 Fly is the flybridge version of the flagship of the Antares line of outboards. Its upper deck includes a starboard helm station and a portside dinette connected to aft-facing sun loungers, while options include a bimini or a solar panel. The boat can accommodate seven people in two cabins with five berths plus a convertible saloon.

Beneteau’s Gran Turismo 36 is the second-smallest model in its GT line

The sporty Gran Turismo 36 with electric sunroof is the second smallest model in a line that ranges from 32 to 50. Twin sterndrive diesel engine choices are 270hp or 300hp each, while outboard options are 300hp or 350hp, producing top speeds in the range of 30-35 knots. The lounge has seating for seven, there are sunpads and a wet bar aft, while the foredeck features a semi-recessed sunpad and can be protected by a sun awning. The lower deck has a galley and two cabins for four.

Beneteau’s Flyer 9 Sundeck is designed for fun in the sun

Jeanneau, another Groupe Beneteau brand, has also launched several new motorboats including the two largest Cap Camarat models, the Merry Fisher 795 Serie2 and the smaller Merry Fisher 605 Serie2.

The 12.5 Walk Around is the flagship of Jeanneau’s Cap Camarat range

The Cap Camarat 12.5 Walkaround is the line’s new seven-tonne flagship with a Michael Peters V-shaped hull powered by either twin 300hp or 450hp engines. The 39ft day cruiser with a beam of almost 12ft has a triple-seat hem station in front of a wet bar, an aft L-shaped sofa aft facing a drop-down bulwark, and an excellent modular foredeck with three sunpads, seating and an adjustable table. Below deck is a galley, forward saloon forward, bathroom and midships cabin with double and single beds.

MOTOR YACHTS: UK
Sunseeker will host all four of its autumn world premieres at its new Sunseeker Showcase in the builder’s home city of Poole. The new 90 – formerly known as the 87 Yacht – is the largest of the new models, which includes the Manhattan 55, Predator 55 EVO™ and 65 Sport Yacht.

Sunseeker’s new 90-footer is part of its Yacht range

The four-cabin 90 is arguably the most exciting premiere as it ushers in a new big-volume generation of yachts from Sunseeker with big upgrades in the aft area, providing more space and features to enable owners and guests to spend more time by and in the water.

The X-TEND™ convertible seating can become a highlight of the 24sqm swim platform

The swim platform spans 6m by 4m, said to be four times the size of competitors’, and features the exciting new X-TEND™ convertible seating, built-in barbecue, overhead rain shower and AV options. There’s plenty of storage for a large jet-tender, jet-skis, Seabobs and other toys, which can all be launched via the hydraulic platform.

The Manhattan 55 succeeds the 52, Sunseeker’s fastest-selling model

The three-cabin Manhattan 55 succeeds the successful Manhattan 52, the fastest-selling model in the brand’s history with over 130 units delivered since late 2016. Key new features include a galley with integrated breakfast island (or lowered worktop) as well as a powered aft window, which when lowered and the cockpit door is open, connects the indoor and outdoor zones. An optional beach club includes built-in barbecue, overhead shower and fold-down transom seating.

The Predator 55 EVO™ follows last year’s launch of the Predator 60 EVO™

The Predator 55 EVO™ features the same sporty interior styling introduced on the 60 EVO™ last year and can reach 34 knots with Volvo D11-725 engines with shaft propulsion. The saloon is dedicated to lounging, while the galley is on the lower deck and faces an L-shaped sofa and dining table. Accommodation is in a full-beam master midships and a forward cabin with scissor berths.

The 65 Sport Yacht joins the 74 in Sunseeker’s Sport Yacht line

The new 65 Sport Yacht joins the 74 Sport Yacht launched in 2018 and offers three lower-deck cabins, a crew cabin and a top speed of 35 knots using Volvo Penta IPS.

The Princess X95 is the first model in the British builder’s X range

Princess chose Facebook Live for the late July world premiere of its X95 (see REVIEW), one of the most talked-about new yachts of 2020 and the third model designed by the Plymouth shipyard with Italy’s Pininfarina for exterior styling, along with long-time partner Olesinski for naval architecture.

The vast saloon of the big-volume Princess X95

The X95 is the pioneer of a new X-Line featuring explorer-style looks, an extended ‘super flybridge’ and an enclosed flybridge, creating a yacht with about 30 per cent more volume than the builder’s previous models of this length.

The CLB88 is the flagship of Hong Kong-headquartered CL Yachts

Outside of Europe, the CLB88 is the new flagship of Hong Kong-headquartered CL Yachts and set for its world premiere in the US at Fort Lauderdale in late October. It’s the third model by the new brand, following the CLA76 and CLB72, and will be followed next year by the CLX96.

Benetti’s Oasis 40M is among the most exciting world premieres of 2020 and was set to be among the largest yachts at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, before the event was cancelled. In recent years, the Italian yard moved into the ‘gigayacht’ sector with three 100m-plus builds including the new 107m charter yacht Lana, but the fibreglass Oasis 40M is the first launch following a design collaboration with UK-based RWD that focuses on large outdoor social spaces and poolside living.

Benetti’s Oasis 40M was designed with UK-based RWD

The 133ft motor yacht has an infinity pool on the swim platform, just a few steps from the water, and the whole beach area can transform into a ‘terrace over the sea’ due to the large spaces and folding bulkheads that expand the social area. Benetti collaborated with New York firm Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture on the interiors.

The new 25 Metri is the flagship of Azimut’s Magellano Collection

Azimut’s major launch of the year is the Magellano 25 Metri, which is even the subject of a short film by Italian director Gabriele Muccino whose films include The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds starring Will Smith. The Magellano yacht and the Muccino-directed short film were both scheduled to be shown at a private premiere in early September.

Vincenzo De Cotiis designed the interior of the Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

The new flagship of the Magellano line, the 83-footer has an exterior by Ken Freivokh and an interior by Vincenzo De Cotiis, and great features include an aft cockpit where opposing sofas lined up lengthways can enjoy an infinity view. The yacht is also the first Azimut fitted with MMVS (Marine Mechanical Ventilation System) produced by Italian company BCool Engineering that is designed to produce regularly purified air in the enclosed spaces.

The 88’ Folgore is the flagship of Riva’s sportfly range

Ferretti Group’s newest models are the Riva 88’ Folgore, Ferretti Yachts 500 and 43wallytender, which were all showcased at the company’s annual Private Preview at Monaco Yacht Club in early September. The Folgore (Italian for ‘lightning’) is the flagship of Riva’s sportfly range and another partnership between Officina Italiana Design and the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Engineering Department.

The Ferretti Yachts 500 is the brand’s smallest model

The Ferretti Yachts 500 is the brand’s smallest model and its third collaboration with Filippo Salvetti, who also designed the exteriors of the 670 and 720 that debuted at Cannes in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Ferretti Group worked with Ideaitalia on the interior, which is offered in Classic (warm tones) and Contemporary (Mediterranean colours).

The 43wallytender is an evolution of the 48wallytender released last year

The 43wallytender is expected to top 40 knots with its larger engine options and follows last year’s premiere of the 48wallytender, the first model by the brand since it became part of Ferretti Group. The new 43-footer features a new ‘central cockpit’ and a flexible layout that can be adjusted for the boating seasons or for specific uses. The model is available in a wide range of exclusive colours and the first unit is in a striking ‘Gator Green’.

Absolute’s Navetta 64 is offered with an open or enclosed flybridge

Absolute’s Navetta 64 is one of the year’s most exciting new models and offers a wide range of options including using the transom storage area for a double cabin where the bed can become an aft-facing sofa by day. Among three lower-deck cabins with ensuites, the master is in the bow and features a king-size bed and full-beam bathroom, while the beamy flybridge is available open or enclosed.

The 62Steel was Sanlorenzo’s first new model of 2020

Sanlorenzo has launched several new models since the lockdown, with the first 62Steel followed by the first 44Alloy. The builder is scheduled to stage the world premieres of both at its La Spezia shipyard during the first two Elite Weekends (September 19-20 and 26-27), created to provide ‘an immersive experience in the nerve centre of Sanlorenzo’s superyacht production’.

Sanlorenzo Asia, a division of Simpson Marine, has sold two 44Alloys

The new SX112 is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 60th Genoa International Boat Show from October 1-6 before it joins the 44Alloy and 62Steel for the third and final Elite Weekend on October 10-11.

The Sanlorenzo SX112 is the flagship of the builder’s SX crossover series

As the new flagship of the popular SX crossover line launched in 2017 by the SX88 and followed by the SX76 a year later, the 34m SX112 has also been designed by Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon International Project, with interiors by Piero Lissoni. As well as the open main deck, look out for a new stern zone featuring a spacious internal beach area that overlooks fold-down side terraces.

Bluegame’s BX60 is scheduled to debut at the Genoa International Boat Show

Bluegame, owned by Sanlorenzo, is also showing its new BGX60 at Genoa, having premiered its BGX70 (REVIEW, Issue 54) at Cannes last year.

Monte Carlo Yachts is scheduled to debut its MCY 76 Skylounge at Fort Lauderdale

After debuting its MCY 70 Skylounge at Miami in February, Monte Carlo Yachts is scheduled to premiere the new MCY 76 Skylounge at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 28-November 1. Designed by Nuvolari Lenard, the Skylounge series features an enclosed air-conditioned interior on the flybridge that includes the yacht’s sole helm station, so increasing the useable space on the main deck.

Other changes include lowered gunwales along the side decks, an upgraded hardtop with openable hatch, a modern entertainment system and many interior upgrades.

Hong Kong’s Lantau Yacht Club open for business

Hong Kong’s Lantau Yacht Club open for business

SHARE

Hong Kong’s first custom-built superyacht marina, Lantau Yacht Club is now welcoming its first boats following an extensive overhaul of the former Club.

Lantau Yacht Club has welcomed its first yachts as the newly named marina soft opened following a concentrated period of rebuilding and refurbishment since the start of 2019.

A Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 is the first member’s boat at Lantau Yacht Club

The first member vessel, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 sailing boat, was the first boat to berth in the marina and was followed by a visiting Ferretti Yachts 670 motor yacht, a model that recently made its Asian debut in Hong Kong.

All 148 berths are scheduled to be completed by October and will be followed by the opening of the new-look clubhouse, which is undergoing a major facelift as part of the overhaul of the former Discovery Bay Marina Club, founded in 1989.

A Ferretti Yachts 670 is the first visiting yacht at Lantau Yacht Club

With the end of construction in sight and operations beginning, Ivan Lee, the club’s Vice President, appears a relieved man, especially with the second year of work coinciding with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“We have been very blessed with the weather, so everything has gone to plan and is on schedule,” Lee says.

Lantau Yacht Club’s Ivan Lee, Vice President; Charlotte Ho, Director of Hospitality Marketing and Membership; and Rudy Puystjens, Marina Director

Located in Discovery Bay on the northeast of Lantau Island, the marina is owned by Hong Kong Resort Company (HKR), a principal subsidiary of HKR International Limited (HKRI) and the developer and owner of Discovery Bay, the 650-hectare residential complex accessed by road or a 25-minute ferry ride west of Central.

The first marina in Hong Kong designed to cater to the specific needs of superyachts, the Lantau Yacht Club features 38 berths for yachts from 30m to over 60m and can accommodate megayachts up to about 100m, with the longest berths located by the marina entrance and the seawall.

“Hong Kong is one of the main activity centres of superyachts in the region, but there has been a lack of mooring and facilities tailor-made for superyachts in Hong Kong in the past,” Lee says. “As Lantau Yacht Club will also attract superyachts from other parts of the world, a number of berths will be reserved for visiting yachts.”

The Marina Office at the Lantau Yacht Club has been operational since July

The marina also includes 57 berths for yachts from 15-30m and 53 from 10-15m, all with finger pontoons. Furthermore, there’s hard stand space for 15 boats up to 17m and dry-stack storage with 30 slots up to 12m.

NEW AND IMPROVED
Lee says the marina has been reconfigured within the original breakwater not only to accommodate larger yachts but also for a general upgrade in hardware and software to reflect the changes in yachting and technology in recent decades.

HKR managed the project with support from specialists and consultants. Marina Projects advised on the masterplan design, berth mix and technical provisions, while Atkins was responsible for the structural design of the concrete pontoon system.

Artist’s impression of the 148-berth Lantau Yacht Club and the Discovery Bay residential complex, a 25-minute ferry ride west of Central

“The marina has been custom designed and rebuilt to cater to today’s standard and requirements, especially for the increasingly popular superyacht sector. After 29 years of non-stop operation, the marina and clubhouse needed to be renovated and upgraded to provide safe, high-quality berthing and services for members,” Lee says.

“For example, the old marina layout was based on yacht sizes that were common over three decades ago, while electricity and fire-safety requirements have changed over the years. First and foremost, Lantau Yacht Club is a typhoon-proof marina, offering the best-possible safety and protection for all berthed vessels.”

The main piers are 5m wide so buggies can safely cross each-other alongside pedestrians, although the installation of 5m-wide concrete pontoons up to 20m in length proved one of the challenges during construction, which followed a comprehensive technical feasibility and engineering assessment. “The main pontoons are in concrete to give the same feeling as walking on land,” says Rudy Puystjens, Marina Director.

Rudy Puystjens, Marina Director, hosts a site visit for industry players

It may seem a small point, but ashtrays are installed in the marina and people won’t be allowed to flick cigarette butts into the water due to the club’s strong focus on sustainability and environmental friendliness. Fines for polluting and littering will be used for eco projects.

Other measures include mandatory use of biodegradable detergents, recycling and treatment of water used in the service yard, and progressive banning of single-use plastic, while coral planting is among co-initiatives being considered.

It’s not only the berth lengths and environmental focus that have increased. As an example of how services and software have been upgraded, the total electricity capacity is four times bigger than before. Superyachts are serviced by an individual pedestal providing up to 600 amp of three-phase shore-power electricity.

Lantau Yacht Club is the new name of the upgraded Discovery Bay Marina Club, founded in 1989

There’s up to 4G of broadband on pontoons, while the club plans to introduce a 5G mobile network.

“The marina’s electricity provision is best of its class and the club is equipped with the highest level of IT provisions,” Puystjens says. “We’re also equipped with a world-class marina management software for a seamless customer experience.”

GROWING CONNECTIONS
Lantau Yacht Club is a proprietary club and membership is offered by invitation only. “We welcome all interested parties who meet our selection criteria. One of the key criteria for membership selection is the appropriateness of the vessels owned by the interested parties,” says Charlotte Ho, Director of Hospitality Marketing and Membership.

Lantau Yacht Club’s members and visiting yacht owners can enjoy access to the 27-hole Discovery Bay Golf Club and its stunning views

“All potential members and their yachts will be considered with respect to, for instance, the club’s rules and regulations, and other regulations and requirements of the authorities.”

As well as transfers to and from Discovery Bay Marina and a concierge service, Lantau Yacht Club members can enjoy a series of special offers and exclusive access to facilities in Discovery Bay, all owned and operated by HKR.

These include the 27-hole Discovery Bay Golf Club, sports and leisure facilities at Discovery Bay Recreation Club, the infinity pool at Club Siena and the Spa, and delicacies at the Auberge Discovery Bay seaside resort hotel.

Located by the Discovery Bay ferry pier, the D’Deck alfresco dining area has a view of Tai Pak Beach and the bay

Apart from golf and swimming, Discovery Bay’s recreational offerings include fitness centres, tennis, squash, basketball, climbing, table tennis, snooker, 10-pin bowling, children’s play areas, dance, indoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms, mah-jong/card room and reading rooms. There’s even a horse-drawn carriage ride, while a new indoor ice rink will open soon.

“The new marina further enhances the image of Discovery Bay as an upscale resort-style community,” Lee says. “It will also benefit local businesses by attracting more visitors and crew.”

Overlooked by seaside residences, Tai Pak Beach is a short walk from the Discovery Bay ferry pier

Hong Kong Disneyland is among nearby attractions, while south Lantau is lined with nice beaches. The north of the island is home to Hong Kong International Airport and the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, a symbol of the city’s increased connectivity to mainland China.

Lee expects Lantau Yacht Club to lure visiting superyachts to Hong Kong, which he believes will become more popular as cruising regulations ease in mainland China.

Discovery Bay at night; Lantau Yacht Club members are provided access to many of the facilities in Discovery Bay, including sports clubs and a hotel

“Lantau is a gateway to mainland China and one of the best transit locations for yachts cruising in Asia or en route to China for sightseeing or supplies. Yachting in Asia is benefiting from the growth of wealth in the region, particularly in mainland China, and Hong Kong’s proximity will help it attract more yachts,” Lee says.

“With our new marina and the professional boat repair and maintenance services, Hong Kong can further develop its maritime economy, which in turn will boost tourism and the local economy while maintaining the city’s place as a key yachting hub in Asia.”

SKAYR Yachts develops stylish SK Renanda One ‘with Asian market in mind’

SKAYR Yachts develops stylish SK Renanda One ‘with Asian market in mind’

SHARE

Indonesian architect Raul Renanda has designed the SK Renanda One, a sleek dayboat conceived for Asian markets that features open social areas and a luxurious double cabin.

SKAYR Yachts is developing the SK Renanda One, a stylish 40ft luxury express cruiser designed by Raul Renanda, an architect, artist and sculptor whose recent work includes the sailboat-influenced Sjuman+Renanda concert grand piano designed with award-winning composer Aksan Sjuman.

SKAYR Yachts was founded by Firman Santoso, Nino Kusumaatmadja and Raul Renanda

Renanda has also cited sailboats as an inspiration in his architecture, paintings and sculptures, and his desire to design a yacht led him to collaborate with Firman Santoso, a luxury property specialist and yachting enthusiast.

Architect Raul Renanda Designs His First-Ever Grand Acoustic Piano

Inspired by the majestic movement of sails, self-taught pianist, architect and abstract painter, Raul Renanda, stepped beyond his expertise in designing hotels and luxury residences, to craft a state-of-the-art grand piano. Envisioning a highly evolved and modernized grand piano, Renanda aimed to create a coherent design, suitable for the contemporary work he often practices.

The pair then enlisted the services of Nino Kusumaatmadja, a naval architect for over two decades, to create SKAYR, with the name representing the initials of their surnames, SKR (Santoso, Kusumaatmadja, Renanda).

Raul Renanda is the creative mind behind the SK Renanda One

“Raul came to me with the idea of designing and making yachts, and we involved Nino due to his experience as a naval architect, sailor and boat owner,” said Santoso, who studied architecture at university with Renanda and later worked in the yacht charter industry.

“Nino is an agroecology enthusiast who puts environmental issues as an important focus in his designs. He leads the technical advisory on each boat built by SKAYR. He selects the best materials and components for each product, plus new technology to balance usability and reliability as well as to reduce the environmental impact.”

The 40ft yacht will be fitted with twin 440hp diesel engines for a top speed of 30 knots

Pitched as ‘sensible luxury’, the SK Renanda One is designed to be owner operated and has a day capacity of eight people, which can include a skipper and crew. The first hull will be fitted with twin 440hp diesel engines for an expected top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 25.

“SKAYR’s vision is to combine high-end craftsmanship with emotional design and a focus on user experience,” Santoso says. “Raul and I focus a lot on the user because of our experience in creating luxury residences and a boat is basically a property on the water. Having carefully studied flow and space experiences in our architectural projects, we’re implementing it in our yachts.”

The SK Renanda One has a luxurious forward cabin, with seating areas on both sides

Designed for warm climates, the SK Renanda One features two fixed lounge beds that face aft over the swim platform and can double as facing sofas. Forward, under a hardtop, are bench seats either side of an adjustable table, a wet bar and a central helm seat. An open version without hardtop is also available.

“It’s a modern but classic-style yacht designed with the Asian market in mind,” Santoso said. “It’s very comfortable for six to eight people to enjoy for the day. It’s essentially a day boat with an open exterior, but with plenty of shade. There’s also a great air-conditioned cabin and comfortable shower facilities, so it’s suitable for overnight stays.”

The cabin also has two TV screens and an ensuite bathroom with separate shower

The forward cabin has an aft-facing double bed with two TV screens and seating on both sides, access to a bathroom with separate shower, while a high-end AV system also provides music outside.

The yacht is being built in Bali and Europe, with the first unit scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2022.

Fairline’s F//Line 33 embodies British heritage, Italian style

Fairline’s F//Line 33 embodies British heritage, Italian style

SHARE

Fairline’s fastest yacht is an ice-cool blend of British and Italian pedigree, and there’s a white hull sitting in Singapore waiting to be taken for a spin. For those at home, you can see what your dream F//Line 33 would look like – and cost – by using the new online configurator.

I’m strolling along the boardwalk at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore to see the first Fairline F//Line 33 in Asia when two men walking the other way stop to stare at the white-hulled yacht, despite it being the smallest on the dock by quite some way.

Alberto Mancini and Fairline crafted the F//Line 33’s design, layout and detailing

“That’s the one,” are the only words I can make out before the man continues talking excitedly to his friend about the streamline 33-footer as it sits in front of the office of Simpson Marine, Fairline’s representative in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The F//Line 33 has been setting tongues wagging since its official premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, hence the excitement around the new unit in Singapore, which is available for sale and has a top speed of 33 knots with twin Volvo Penta 220hp diesel engines.

The multi-functional steering wheel is the heart of the twin-seat helm

However, Fairline’s fastest yacht to date clocks 48 knots with the most powerful of its three Volvo Penta options, the 430hp petrol V8s, which has proved the most popular engine choice on the first 15 units built, which have been delivered as far as Asia, Australia, the US and all across Europe, from the Med to Scandinavia and even a couple of local deliveries into the UK itself.

Italian designer Alberto Mancini, one of the hottest names in yacht design, has worked on every new Fairline model since the brand’s rebirth in 2016 and the former car designer has described the F//Line 33 as a ‘car design in a yacht hull’.

The wet bar can prepare meals for outdoor or indoor dining

Even during the build stage, though, Mancini was keen to emphasise that as well as being a fast performance boat, the F//Line 33 was created to be a practical yacht to be used for weekends or overnight trips.

Miles Moorhouse, Fairline Yachts’ Head of Marketing, was among senior management who in 2017 discussed what the yard’s first sub-40ft boat in almost a decade should look like and be able to do, with the first F//Line creating a new class for the British builder alongside its established Squadron and Targa ranges.

The F//Line’s top speed is 48 knots with the option of twin 430hp petrol V8s

Moorhouse believes the 32ft 9in speedster has delivered on all its promises and points to its success in a highly competitive Superboat category at this year’s Motor Boat Awards held during Boot Dusseldorf, where Fairline also debuted the model’s Outboard version.

“I’ll put it simply,” Moorhouse says. “The F//Line 33 is not just my favourite Fairline – it’s my favourite boat from any brand.”

DRIVING ON WATER
Like Mancini, Moorhouse is a car guy, having spent two decades in the automotive industry before moving in 2008 to Fairline Boats, which was founded in 1963 on the River Nene in the inland town of Oundle near Peterborough, two hours’ north of London.

The two sofas and adjustable table are set up for meals and socialising

He worked for the Oundle yard for four years before joining another British builder, then returned in February 2016 as the newly owned, newly named Fairline Yachts successfully rebuilt the brand soon after the previous business went into administration.

Mancini has since provided the company with sporty, sexy styling to complement the build and finish quality the brand has earned since Jack Newington founded the company almost six decades ago.

“The design of the F//Line 33 is reminiscent of an old English sports car like a Jaguar E-Type. It looks stunning and it’s perfect for a couple or a young family,” Moorhouse says.

The aft bench can also be adjusted to face the swim platform for a waterfront view

“One of the best things about the boat is that it looks as good as it did at the concept stage. In my time in cars and yachts, I’ve seen a lot of cool concepts on paper and even some great mock-ups, but the actual cars and yachts looked nothing like the renders when they came out. The 33 does.”

Muscular, sporty looks aside, the F//Line 33 surprised even Fairline management in terms of performance. Last year, the first hull was shown on London’s River Thames on August 29 before it was whisked down on a lorry to the south of the France for the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Arriving three days before the show, she was unloaded, filled with fuel and taken for her first spin, where she stunned all on board. Fitted with twin 430hp Volvo Penta V8s, the yacht clocked 48.7 knots in the Bay of Cannes while carrying seven people, significant cargo for a six-tonne boat.

The F//Line 33 has even surprised Fairline management with its performance

“We were all were shocked,” Moorhouse recalls. “We were expecting 45 knots, so we were staggered when we clocked 48.7. The seas were calm, but there were seven of us plus full fuel and water tanks.”

Even in far chopper conditions, a media sea trial achieved 47 knots with 10 people, 50 per cent fuel, and full water and holding tanks.

Although she’s very quick, the handling and performance of the yacht is arguably even more impressive, with the deep V hull by J&J Design enabling the boat to provide a smooth ride for passengers even at high speed and during tight turns.

J&J Design designed the hull, fundamental to the 33-footer’s impressive performance and handling

“I’ve really got to know the boat well, and the performance and the handling is stunning,” says Moorhouse, who has spent a lot of time with the 33 during shows, sea trials and media events.

“We knew it would look great and we knew it would be fast, but not that fast. However, the boat turns on a sixpence and the handling is just so good. J&J absolutely nailed the hull design. It’s the softest-riding boat I’ve been on.”

FUN AND FLEXIBLE
Ultimately, the boat’s global popularity lies in its user-friendly layout and versatile features, making it ideal for a group of friends during the day and up to four overnight.

For such a sleek yacht, the saloon boasts a surprising amount of space and headroom

A drop-down transom provides a convenient boarding platform as well as a swim platform, while the aft handheld shower is a useful feature. An adjustable backrest enables the aft bench to face the water, a nice option when it’s time to get wet or simply relax with a sea view and a Sangria.

The triple bench seats provide comfortable seating either side of the adjustable table, with a telescopic option enabling it to be lowered and merge with the seats for an enlarged lounging area.

Forward, a slick wet bar with two hobs, a sink and fridge faces aft, so the chef of the hour can interact with others at the table.

For such a sleek yacht, the saloon boasts a surprising amount of space and headroom

The central twin-seat helm station benefits from a one-piece windscreen, a multi-functional steering wheel and clean electronic display, while a premium Fusion Apollo audio system provides the day’s soundtrack, with an upgrade including a subwoofer, amplifier and two additional speakers.

On each side, pantograph side doors offer access to the foredeck, which has a two-person sunpad, plus storage underneath. For shade, options include a central T-Top above the helm and wet bar, while a hydraulic bimini and optional sky canopies can provide additional cover forward and aft.

However, it’s the downstairs space and especially the initial headroom that surprises most first-time visitors. Situated forward, the saloon features comfortable seating around a table, which again has a telescopic option that enables it to be lowered, in this case to form a comfortable double V-berth. To starboard, the head offers good headroom and has a sink and hand-held shower.

Midships is the cosy double cabin with hanging lockers on each side

The cabin is midships and has locker storage on either side and a decent-sized double bed, even if it’s a squeeze to snuggle into. The saloon at least could benefit from windows or at least portholes, which Fairline says are being considered for future F//Line models.

Aside from four engine choices, the boat’s many options include a TV/ mirror in the saloon, integrated wine coolers on deck and mood lighting, plus a huge range of exterior colours achieved through vinyl wrapping.

CREATE YOUR OWN
In fact, anyone can now envision what their potential F//Line 33 would look like. Inspired by online configurators used in the car industry, Fairline has recently launched the F//Line version where you can try out colour options for the hull as well as seat and sunpad fabrics, or see which hardtop or bimini options look best.

Furthermore, you can also choose from the vast list of options and know how much it will all cost, offering a transparency rarely seen in the yachting industry. As an indication, the hull in Singapore is listed for sale at GBP372,050 (about US$480,000), with Moorhouse believing the price point is another reason for the global appeal of the F//Line 33.

“The price makes it attainable for the audience we’re targeting, which is someone who’s doing well and looking to buy a luxury yacht for the first time. Or maybe it’s their second boat after a ski boat and they want a fast, fun design with the option of staying overnight.”

The F//Line online configurator allows anyone to see what their ideal boat would look like

Fairline can build three or four 33s at any one time and expects to build a total of 20 this year and another 20 or so in 2021. As such, the model has become a key component of the Fairline business and runs alongside annual production of another 50-60 units from the Targa (45-65ft) and Squadron (50-68ft) ranges.

“We had a reasonably strong order book for the 33 pre-launch and the orders keep on coming,” says Moorhouse. “And if you visit the facility, you’ll see that a 33 is built with the same attention to detail as our flagship Squadron 68.”

The first Fairline F//Line 33 in Asia is in Singapore

Furthermore, the yacht’s audience also keeps on growing. After showing an F//Line 33 among its line-up at BOATS2020 in Southampton from September 11-20, Fairline will display the car-inspired speedster at the 15th Salon Privé held on the stunning lawns of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire from September 23-26.

Despite the competition for eyeballs at the UK’s most exclusive motor show, you can expect a few more people to stop and stare at the new Fairline favourite.

Shot in Venice, the short film stars Pierfrancesco Favino and co-stars an Aquariva, while a 300-page book pays tribute to the 39 films that Riva yachts have appeared in.

Riva in the Movie makes its official debut on September 4 during the Venice Film Festival, which will be attended by the film’s star, Pierfrancesco Favino, also the leading actor and co-producer of Padrenostro, the competition film directed by Claudio Noce.

Pierfrancesco Favino stars in and narrates Riva in the Movie

Favino also narrates Riva in the Movie, which features him crossing Piazza San Marco just before dawn, in moonlight filtering through an evocative fog, and boarding an Aquariva. His goal is to navigate Venice’s canals to deliver a mysterious mahogany object to an equally mysterious recipient. The finale comes as a big surprise.

With a creative concept developed by Armando Testa, the film is directed by Federico Brugia and co-stars Beatrice Schiaffino and Andrea Bordoli.

An Aquariva features in the short film, which was directed by Federico Brugia

Shot entirely in Venice, the film’s locations include Piazza San Marco, Rialto bridge, the Lido and the Palazzo del Cinema, taking viewers on a journey through the canals and wonders of the beautiful city.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “The celebration of cinema with Riva’s magnificent boats, which have starred in so many films and introduced the whole world to Italian style and creativity: that is our aspiration for Riva in the Movie, a powerful short film starring the most accomplished and famous Italian actor in the world, Pierfrancesco Favino, against the backdrop of Venice’s splendours. Riva in the Movie is dedicated to everyone who believes in the magical power of imagination and talent.”

Riva in the Movie was shot entirely in Venice

Riva’s iconic mahogany and contemporary boats have appeared in films across more than 70 years, from global blockbusters like James Bond movies, Nikita and Men in Black to major Italian hits like Mambo, La Baia di Napoli and Il Sorpasso, and multiple award-winning art house films like La Grande Bellezza.

Their story is also told in a 300-page book, also titled Riva in the Movie, which covers 39 films and includes original film posters, hundreds of superb on-set and backstage photographs, 77 actors and 110 actresses.

Riva in the Movie is also a 300-page book about Riva’s history in film

Riva’s history in film will also be the subject of an exhibition at The Gritti Palace, where the Riva Lounge offers spectacular views over the Canal Grande. The exhibition will tell the story of the numerous films in which Riva boats have played an important role alongside Italian and international movie stars.

The general public and members of the yachting industry are invited to attend this year’s Asia Boating Dialogue, which comprises 120-minute, free-to-register webinars on September 22 and 29. Please scroll down for the list of speakers and event website for free registration.

Session One (Southeast & South Asia) will focus on India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and will be held at 4.00pm (SIN/HKG) on Tuesday, September 22.

Session Two (East & Northeast Asia) will be held at 4.00pm (SIN/HKG) on Tuesday, September 29, and focus on China, Hong Kong & Macau, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The event is organised by the Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA) in collaboration with the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA), and supported by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the world body for the recreational boating industry.

The Dialogue series was inaugurated in Singapore in 2015 as ‘ICOMIA – The Asian Dialogue’. It was an invitation-only event designed to engage the Asian boating community, help it become more institutionalised and organise collective thinking. It was subsequently promoted as the Asia Boating Forum. YP Loke, Chair of SBIA, believes the new online version will greatly expand its reach.

“Running the Asia Boating Dialogue as a webinar enables us to reach a wider audience than in previous events. It will engage a new audience who would not normally travel abroad to a boat show,” Loke said.

“We need to start a conversation about boating in Asia, join the dots between countries and build a shared community with the same goals and aspirations for boating in Asia. Although Covid-19 has caused borders in most countries to close, we all need to work with our respective agencies to find ways to re-open borders and revive nautical tourism.”

Like with previous sessions, the Asia Boating Dialogue consists of country updates followed by a round-table discussion, and registered viewers will also be able to submit questions. A limited number of spots are being made available for sponsors and special interest groups.

Lawrence Chow, Chair of HKBIA and an ICOMIA Executive Committee member, said: “In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asia Boating Dialogue provides the perfect platform for regional industry leaders to share the current difficulties they are facing and provide ideas for how the industry in Asia can adapt to the post Covid-19 era.

“It also opens up the opportunity to identify and understand the typical obstacles for growth in Asia. Through discussions, we will get a better insight for the current state of the industry and set the blueprint for recovery in Asia.”

Udo Kleinitz, ICOMIA’s Secretary-General, added: “We are pleased to continue supporting this event which ICOMIA initiated in 2015. We want to continue our engagement in Asia, build our base, and help our members promote the boating industry in their countries.”

Session One Speakers (September 22)
India: Aashim Mongia, Indian Marine Federation (IMF)
Indonesia: Robin Engel, Indonesian Marine Tourism Association (GAHAWISRI)
