Naming his birthday present Happy Fifty, Asiamarine owner Eric Noyel says his customised Bali 4.8 is a very comfortable fit for a man content with his place in life.

Happy Fifty is Noyel’s first sailing boat and catamaran

For a man who named his new yacht Happy Fifty, Eric Noyel appears to be living the dream. His Asiamarine dealership is going well but he also gives the air of someone who has found peace and is happy to share his good fortune with family and friends.

Noyel ordered the luxuriously customised Bali 4.8 as a 50th birthday gift for himself and since the 49ft sail cat arrived in Hong Kong late last year, he looks to have been enjoying his new present. And I’m not just taking his word for it.

The French entrepreneur is happy to share a video of himself and his wife on the boat having an alfresco breakfast on a sunny morning in Deep Water Bay, surrounded by sailing boats and superyachts, with early-rising rowers in the distance.

All around the bay, the sea is clear and calm, as Noyel pans the camera to show some of the toys he plans to use that day, including a kayak and a tender. It’s peaceful, quiet, relaxing and enough to make you want to dive into the screen and take a swim.

“I am very serene right now,” admits Noyel, who founded Asiamarine in 2013, having sold his previous company. “I just enjoy this boat. I enjoy sleeping on board and I enjoy diving into the water.

“I bought it because I wanted a boat that I could use myself and we use it pretty much every weekend, mainly in Deep Water Bay. We often invite friends over – so far, no one has rejected my invitation.”

Happy Fifty is the first Bali 4.8 fitted with a flybridge hardtop

The three-cabin Bali 4.8 is Noyel’s first sailing boat and first catamaran. His previous boats were all motor yachts and included three large models from Numarine and a Wellcraft speedboat, as well as a couple of mid-sized Galeons for a period to kick-start his representation of the brand.

“I was tired of having big boats. I had a 78-footer, a 105-footer and I was tired of having a lot of crew around. I like this Bali because I like being closer to the sea, more connected to the water. You can be less connected to the water on big boats. I also wanted to start sailing again, although I haven’t sailed too much so far. It’s more like a weekend house.”

SAILING AND HYPNOTHERAPY

Noyel grew up sailing in the south of France, where he said he was “a typical French kid”, learning the sport with other schoolmates, moving from Optimists to Lasers, 420s and later Hobie cats.

Noyel founded Asiamarine in 2013

A graduate of the ESSCA School of Management, he stopped boating when he began a career that brought him to Asia. As he started to gain some momentum in the business world, he returned to boating when he sought to charter boats to entertain clients.

“This was 15 years ago, when it was very difficult to charter a boat in Hong Kong. I always wanted to have a boat, but was more interested in fractional ownership and sharing costs. I was earning money, but I didn’t quite have enough …. yet I wanted a boat so bad,” he smiles.

After eventually selling his company, Noyel did have enough to buy himself a Numarine 78 Hardtop that was delivered to Hong Kong in 2013.

Although he would later represent the Turkish builder, his initial vision for the yacht was not to start a dealership but to use the boat as a base to practice hypnotherapy, rather than receiving clients in an office.

Having studied hypnotherapy on and off for seven years, he named the boat Hypnotist and ordered the hull in purple because “the colour of the unconscious mind is purple”.

With enough money to not have to rush back into business, Noyel spent a lot of time and nights on the boat, eventually creating Asiamarine to charter the boat, which did 100 days of business in its first year.

“The business caught on and people started chartering it. I probably spent 100 days on the boat, sleeping overnight and living on board with a full crew including a very experienced French captain,” he says. “This period taught me a lot of things about maintenance. I became very hands on, so that was my apprenticeship, my boating university.”

ADJUSTMENTS AND LEARNINGS

Noyel eventually sold off the 78 HT in shares. Having realised flybridge motor yachts were more in demand in Hong Kong, he next bought a Numarine 62 Flybridge, which he again sold off in shares, although the yacht remains in Asiamarine’s charter fleet. Noyel’s third boat was a Wellcraft outboard he kept in Thailand, where he drove the speedboat himself and used it for fun day trips.

Noyel and Asiamarine have represented Bali since 2020

Having ‘downgraded’ twice, Noyel then embarked on a massive upgrade by buying a Numarine 105 Hardtop, Dolce Vita, which had four permanent crew including an Italian captain and up to six when it was chartered. Bought with his wife and another partner, the yacht was in Thailand for two years before later being sold.

It was around this time he secured the Galeon dealership and self-financed the purchase of a 500 Fly stock boat. The iconic model with the drop-down wings, portside bar and rotating cockpit sofa was used to launch the brand in Hong Kong in early 2017.

Happy Fifty is available for charter through Asiamarine

Noyel also dug into his own pocket to buy a Galeon 460 that was kept in Thailand, but the investments have since paid off, with Asiamarine selling over 40 units of the brand in the ensuing years.

“Everything was adjustments and learnings,” says Noyel, whose business has since grown steadily with the growing popularity of the Galeon brand, representation of Fraser since 2018, and the additions of Bali, Tige and Nimbus to the portfolio over the past two years.

“I feel Covid has helped give our sales a push, although we did not experience crazy growth. We sold seven Galeon yachts three years ago, nine two years ago and 11 last year, so it’s all fine, especially as we took advantage of this time to acquire new brands.”

Key Bali features include the solid foredeck, which increases social space

The company sold over 50 new and brokerage boats last year and has recently hired senior sales staff for its Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand offices, as well as a hugely experienced aftersales manager in Hong Kong. The company also has satellite offices in Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia.

CUSTOMISING AND CRUISING

It was against the backdrop of Covid that Noyel ordered his Bali 4.8. Although his business was steadily gaining speed, he was looking to slow things down on the water when he ordered the brand’s second-largest sailing catamaran.

“After owning several boats, I understand very well the cost of maintenance, so I wanted a low-maintenance boat. I didn’t need speed, but I wanted space and to take my time sailing to Vietnam or Philippines or elsewhere in Southeast Asia.”

Happy Fifty heads into the Hong Kong sunset

Noyel focused on the 4.8 after assessing it was the largest model he could own and operate in Hong Kong with a Grade Two licence for skippering boats up to 50ft. Yacht Style reviewed the Bali 4.8 in Issue 59, but Noyel’s version is a cut above the standard model. For starters, Happy Fifty is the model’s first hull ordered with a hardtop above the flybridge, although the main changes are inside.

“Bali came from charter and has already made incredible improvements in the interior. They’re now doing even more, making huge efforts to make their boats more luxurious,” says Noyel, who wanted a completely customised interior in terms of furniture and furnishings, featuring brands like Minotti.

“However, I wanted something special, so I went shopping from the famous interior brands. The whole interior has been customised and includes some brands we don’t even have at home.”

Noyel sailed Happy Fifty along the Cote d’Azur with friends after receiving the boat from Bali

Noyel took delivery of Happy Fifty last summer at the Bali factory in Canet-en-Roussillon on the south coast of France. It was a nice starting point for a trip with childhood friends as they explored the Cote d’Azur, taking in the likes of Marseille, St Tropez and Nice before the boat was fine-tuned by Bali ahead of shipment from Genoa to Hong Kong.

Since arriving in Hong Kong, the yacht has been added to the Asiamarine charter fleet, although Noyel had no plans to charter it until colleagues convinced him.

In fact, Happy Fifty is extremely charter friendly with a catalogue of toys including a semi-rigid tender, underwater scooter, mini diving bottles with compressor, eFoil electric surfboard, paddleboards, kayak, snorkelling masks, inflatables, rackets, balls, frisbees and fishing gear.

Noyel said his Bali 4.8 is an ideal fit at a time of life where he’s more focused on ‘being’ than ‘having’

For her owner, though, they’re all just part of a package allowing him to enjoy life on the water with the people most important to him.

“I think there are phases in life. In psychology, there are two defining modes that structure our thinking: to have and to be. For some of my yachts, it was more about the excitement of owning the yacht, having it, but maybe with the Wellcraft and definitely with the Bali, it’s about being.

“I just enjoy being on it. Maybe I’m moving into the ‘being’ philosophy because I’m older, but honestly, I’ve never been happier.”

Celebrating the launch of hull two

Benetti has launched hull two of the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M (Review, Issue 63), a model that made its global debut at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. The shipyard collaborated with Francesco Struglia on the exterior of the 121ft Class yacht, which features an interior by Lazzarini & Pickering Architects.

The Motopanfilo 37M’s iconic design features includes a fold-down beach club with fold-out cabana bimini as well as a lofty fifth level, a cosy observation deck with panoramic views on top of the sun deck.

The second Motopanfilo 37M has been named eh²

Lukas Stratmann from Ocean Independence sold the second hull last July and attended the launch of eh² at the Benetti Shipyard in Viareggio. The yacht will be available for charter in the Mediterranean this summer.

“For me, the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M is the ultimate in simplicity, blending iconic elements of a classic 1960s heritage with decidedly 21st century thinking,” Stratmann said. “We are delighted to see eh² launch and look forward to delivery to her owner this May.”

Design teams from Italy, France, Slovenia and New Zealand collaborated to create the new First 36, a high-performance, high-volume 36ft cruiser-racer.

Beneteau has revealed the First 36, the new flagship of a seventh-generation First series also featuring the 14, 24 and 27 models released last year. The product of an international collaboration of designers, the 4.8-tonne 36-footer has a 12ft 6in beam, a 7ft 5in draft, and upwind and downwind sail areas of 80sqm (861sqft) and 180sqm (1,930sqft) respectively.

The exterior is by Italian Lorenzo Argento, who has also worked on the First Yacht 53, Oceanis Yacht 54 and upcoming Oceanis Yacht 60, while Slovenia’s Gigodesign handled the interior, both studios collaborating with teams from Beneteau and Seascape to shape the project.

Naval architecture is by France’s Sam Manuard, who also worked on all the current First and First SE designs from 14-27ft, and has experience in Mini, Class40 and IMOCA 60. New Zealand’s Pure Design & Engineering, which has also worked on IMOCA 60s as well as AC75 and TP52 designs, handled structural engineering and provided further experience of high-speed sailing yachts.

“We believe this is the first time a mainstream-production boat with full-cruising facilities, a mid-market price tag and the full support of a worldwide dealer network has been pushed this far towards true high-performance sailing,” Beneteau stated.

“But what we’re really proud of is making this level of fast, fun sailing available to everyone. Because First 36 has made speed easy, we believe owners will simply sail more.”

Aiming ‘to take the drama out of going fast’, Beneteau focused on the balance of the sail plan, underwater body and steering system. The result is a yacht that can be steered with fingertip control on a hard upwind as well as a fast, planning ride downhill, according to the builder.

Beneteau, First 36, sailing, boat, yacht, 14, 24, 27, Lorenzo Argento, Seascape, Gigodesign, Sam Manuard, Pure Design & Engineering, Mini, Class40, IMOCA 60, AC75, TP52, IMOCA 60

Beneteau says the main difference from most ‘cruiser-racer’ boats is that the First 36 is ‘no longer locked in displacement speed’ due mainly to a significantly lower weight. “Going 9-11 knots instead of 5-7 knots makes sailing more fun,” the company stated. “It also makes your cruising radius bigger. You will not only enjoy sailing more with this boat but spend more time under sail.”

The entire boat is a vacuum-infused, fully-cored GRP composite structure that includes bulkheads and most interior parts. Almost all interior elements contribute to the structural strength of the boat.

With the First 36 Designed to fit a variety of sailing styles including cruising with family and friends, shorthanded sailing, club racing or distance racing with a full crew, the cockpit has two distinct modes: one for racing/shorthanded sailing and one for cruising. In racing mode, the open T-cockpit has space enough to move effortlessly between work positions.

In cruising mode, the cockpit is supplied with removable boxes to lengthen the benches and a cockpit table, which transforms the cockpit to a more relaxing, lounge-like environment. Deck gear is upgraded from industry standard, both in size and quality.

The living quarters below deck are a reinvented layout of the First 40.7 and offer huge volumes for a 36ft sailing yacht. Even though most of the interior is structural elements in vacuum-infused GRP, warm wood has been used for floorboards, doors, table and trim. A smooth inner liner and ambient light settings create a relaxed, homely atmosphere.

A freestanding kitchen island contains a huge fridge and can be connected to the pantry with a removable cutting board. The bathroom footprint is significantly reduced, due to a foldable sink. Both multipurpose aft cabins can sleep two people. When needed, they can also be transformed into huge storage rooms, big enough for a surfboard.

With three winches and two banks of clutches, the helmsman can manage all sailing manoeuvres

Fountaine Pajot’s seven sailing catamaran models through to the flagship Alegria 67 have names ending in ‘a’, including some such as the Elba 45 and the Tanna 47 that refer to islands. For its new entry-level model, the Isla 40, the French builder settled on the generic Spanish word for island, pronounced ‘iz-la’.

Measuring just over 39ft overall, the Isla only had its official world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, yet it has already sold multiple units across Asia, where owners – including a client in Japan who switched from a 48ft motor yacht – have started exploring islands, beaches and bays around the region.

“When we think of Asia, we sometimes think of big boats because of motor yachts, but you can have a very capable, fully equipped Isla 40 delivered here for €500,000 (about US$570,000), so the pool of customers is much wider,” says Kevin Corfa, Fountaine Pajot’s Head of Asia.

“These new owners are attracted to boats they can sail themselves without having crew while still having large social areas and privacy when needed

“For the same amount of living space, the Isla consumes much less power because it’s a sailing yacht but also when motoring because it’s a cat. It can have a big water tank and because owners will handle more things on board themselves, they appreciate having so much space around the engine in the technical area, making maintenance easier.”

A LITTLE EXTRA IN THE HULLS

Like all Fountaine Pajot’s current sail cats, the Isla 40 features naval architecture by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design. The newcomer succeeds another island-themed model, the Lucia 40, and is a notable upgrade on her popular predecessor, which sold almost 300 units in five years.

Fountaine Pajot, Isla 40, sailing, catamaran, Alegria 67, Tanna 47, Elba 45, Japan, Kevin Corfa, La Rochelle, Berret-Racoupeau, Yacht, Design, France, Asia, hulls, cockpit, foredeck, bow, sail, cabin

The comfortable bow area is accessed by wide side-decks aided by long handrails on the coachroof

The main modifications focus on the interior and the hulls, whose bows now adopt inverted stems. The hulls have gained 8in at the waterline, increasing the length from 38ft 6in to 39ft 2in, and it’s remarkable how the inverted bows alter the silhouette and give a much sportier, seductive design.

In this pivotal 40ft category – much below this length, some crews might hesitate to embark on ocean passages – the performance/comfort compromise is a subtle equation, for want of space. Hulls that are too narrow deprive the boat of double berths in the forecabins. On the other hand, a nacelle that’s too large translates into displacement and consequent windage.

Fountaine Pajot, Isla 40, sailing, catamaran, Alegria 67, Tanna 47, Elba 45, Japan, Kevin Corfa, La Rochelle, Berret-Racoupeau, Yacht, Design, France, Asia, hulls, cockpit, foredeck, bow, sail, cabin

The inverted bows give a modern and elegant silhouette to the Isla 40

The Isla 40 scores highly, with sufficient but controlled volumes everywhere. A light displacement of nine-plus tonnes and a total sail area of about 1,025sqft (95sqm) gives a good sail-area-to-weight ratio.

BUILT TO LAST

The generous semi-circular sections of the hulls can carry the load, while the design offers fine-entry bows and comfortable bridgedeck clearance. The hulls adopt a discreet chine on their inboard sides.

Using infusion, the hulls are made up in three sections: the underside of the nacelle, the inboard topsides and the outboard half-hulls. The sandwich consists of a balsa core and skins made of multiaxial glass cloth.

Fountaine Pajot, Isla 40, sailing, catamaran, Alegria 67, Tanna 47, Elba 45, Japan, Kevin Corfa, La Rochelle, Berret-Racoupeau, Yacht, Design, France, Asia, hulls, cockpit, foredeck, bow, sail, cabin

The cockpit is backed by a wide aft sofa, while the starboard daybed is by steps to the helm station

The deck and coachroof, true to the yard’s know-how, are injected parts – vacuum lamination in a two-sided mould. A closer examination of both the bilges and the electrical circuits inspires confidence, with all elements accessible and connections carefully made. The engine compartments are particularly large and the three-cylinder motors benefit from easy access for maintenance.

In addition to its sandwich construction, it should be noted that the Isla 40 is equipped with four buoyancy zones. The assembly of the catamaran’s steering components is robust and all the elements such as the rod connecting the two rudders and the autopilot ram are accessible.

TRIALLED AND TESTED

We were able to discover the Isla 40 at Bandol in the south of France, where our test model was equipped with twin 30hp Volvo engines, offering 7-8 knots. The helm station is raised, but it’s not on the coachroof, which has the option of three solar panels aft but is otherwise clear.

The cockpit includes an L-shaped sofa and a table to port

The helm offers good visibility over the water and the helmsman can easily manage all sailing manoeuvres using the three winches and two banks of clutches.

The area is user-friendly due to the double bench seat and the proximity of the cockpit below, while steps and a railing allow easy access up to the optional fixed bimini.

The mainsail is quick to hoist. As soon as the overlapping genoa is unfurled, the Isla 40 starts to move with barely a ripple on the water, even with fuel and water tanks 80 per cent full. Despite a still-low speed, she tacks easily to get closer to where the breeze looks to be.

The interior benefits from panoramic views, natural light and breeze through windscreen hatches

There, with 8-9 knots of wind, we strode along at five knots at an angle of 50° off the true wind. No need to head up any further – the Isla 40 prefers the sails just a little open. The wind finally settled down between 12-15 knots and we took advantage of this to unfurl the gennaker, which is an option. This gave the predicted turbo-boost, with the GPS displaying between 8-9 knots.

OUTDOOR ZONES

The first impression when you stroll around the Isla 40 is that the deck is clean, bare and efficient. The side decks are at least 2ft wide, the non-slip is effective even when wet, and each side of the coachroof has two long handrails.

The bow area presents a wide sunbathing area aft of the trampolines, while stools at the tip of each hull provide a fun place to watch over the water. The anchoring gear is well designed and easy to use.

There’s a watchkeeper’s berth and additional storage space

The aft cockpit is covered by a generous overhang. To port, there’s a big L-shaped sofa that seats five and a long table (5ft 5in by 2ft 9in), but with the addition of four stools, you could squeeze in up to 10 guests.

To starboard is a comfortable lounger, while aft is a 6ft-wide forward-facing sofa. The large open areas facilitate circulation and access to the deck as well as to the wide sugarscoops, plus there’s also a dinghy davit, with Fountaine Pajot offering a 10ft Hypalon with 15hp outboard as an option.

INNER SANCTUARY

The sliding bay door is the passing point between the cockpit and the saloon, and the opening is wide, while there’s also a sliding galley window that helps the flow between the exterior and interior. Like the Elba 45, the overall finish inside is very attractive, while the saloon feels roomier and more relaxed compared to the Lucia 40.

The L-shaped galley includes a three-burner hob, oven, double sink and drawer-fridges. Compared to the Lucia, it offers additional storage space and pleasing, rounded corners, while the forward chart table has disappeared. Instead, all the navigation equipment is grouped together to starboard, by the cockpit.

The interior headroom of 6ft 10in offers plenty of volume, while there’s a lengthways window in the coachroof. The side windows are wide, with the view particularly expansive toward the stern, and so many windows make the saloon very luminous, especially since the uprights are quite discreet.

The three-cabin Maestro version has the master suite in the starboard hull

At the forward end, Fountaine Pajot has kept its sloping windows, which are topped by a small overhang like the peak of a cap, lessening the greenhouse effect. Furthermore, two large opening hatches provide effective ventilation. The lounge features a large, comfortable C-shaped sofa with table, which can be transformed into a double berth.

MAESTRO OR QUARTOUT

In the hulls, there are options for three or four cabins. Maestro, the three-cabin version, has the master suite occupying the starboard hull with an island bed aft, a desk/vanity table, plenty of drawer space and hanging wardrobes, a separate toilet and a forward bathroom and shower.

The port hull has a VIP cabin with island bed aft and a guest cabin forward, and there are options for both of these cabins to have en-suite bathrooms or share a larger bathroom.

Quatuor (quartet), the four-cabin layout, offers two cabins in each hull, either with en-suites or a shared bathroom in each hull, while there’s also space for a compact crew berth in the starboard forepeak. Overall, ventilation in the cabins is well thought out and the mattresses are of excellent quality.

If you try the Isla 40, it’s likely you’ll want one. We took great pleasure in sailing her, as she’s well balanced under sail and easy to handle. A single-hander will manage fine, novice sailors will quickly get their bearings as the miles go by, while the boat’s numerous stowage spaces support offshore journeys. The Isla is an evolution as intelligent as it is seductive.

The VIP suite on the port side

“The layout is slightly different and more open than other brands, with the cockpit and saloon of a similar size, while there’s still a very good flow of communication between passengers,” Corfa says. “I think the interior finishing is the same level as on the 51, so I’m really happy with the result of the Isla. Sales figures are really encouraging.”

The Drunken Monster Maven Club is wholly owned by Maven Global, Singapore’s first NFT community where artists, entrepreneurs, and CEOs from various leading industries such as art, finance, technology, and hospitality have collaborated to create an enabling environment for Asia’s greatest minds and innovators.

MAVEN’s co-founder & Art Director Sophy Zhang said, “We are building a close-knitted community not just for artists to display, NFT and auction their works, but also for collectors to mingle and network with financiers and CEOs from both traditional industries, as well as new emerging technology sectors like blockchain.”

MAVEN is not your typical art-based NFT platform, but is instead an ecosystem where the classical intermingles with contemporary, the East meets West, and traditional finance merges with new, decentralised Finance in a truly holistic lifestyle. MAVEN offers an exceptional hospitality service through their Virgin Palate bistro bar concept, developed at the hands of co-founder & Head of Hospitality, Mark Tay.

By collaborating with top-end galleries and for talented artists to showcase their artwork in the digital realm, MAVEN assists these artists in promoting their artwork via NFT published on its proprietary MAVENArt NFT marketplace and metaverse gallery. Members through the MAVEN membership app can also enjoy attractive deals, and place auction bids for these artworks using their MAVEN coin.

Drunken Monster Maven Club (DMMC) on the other hand is created by MAVEN co-founder Dave Cheng and his team of NFT advisors. “In MAVEN community I always enjoy having networking session with all the innovative entrepreneurs over a drinking session. This DMMC come across my mind where I think this Avatar can be symbolic, like us, a group of talented and high energy individuals who still spar ideas, concepts and enjoy quality conversations over a quality drink!”

Every Drunken Monster NFT has alcoholic beverage in his/her left hand as well as its own traits and rarity, affording each NFT different levels of utility from access to voting rights in the MAVEN metaverse, which is a collection of alternate digital realities where people work, play, and socialise. MAVEN wants to play a vital part in building this metaverse and create a realm for those seeking to raise their artist and/or collector profiles.

“Aside from the tangible benefits that we provide to all our DMMC NFT holders, we also prioritise service in digital assets management, whether it is about setting up an NFT wallet, crypto trading account to offering crypto concierge service in various Over-the-Counter (OTC) facilities. We offer crypto/digital assets advisory to reduce risk of mismanagement and maximise returns on their digital investments as long you are part of our community,” highlighted MAVEN co-founder & Chief Concept Architect Mr. JK

In a nutshell, DMMC does not just provide DMMC NFT holders with digital ownership and voices in the metaverse; we also provide our NFT holders with exclusive real-world privileges like exclusive access to rare collectibles, luxury events, art auctions, and future MAVEN projects.

#DMMC NFT Utility and Benefits

1. Earn passive income by owning DMMC NFTs (yields MAVEN Coins in accordance with rarity)

2. Networking and social interactions with artists, rare alcohol connoisseurs and collectors

3. Priority for rare art/whisky/wine/alcohol private auctions

The Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557 Thrills With Its Ingenious Complication

The Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557 Thrills With Its Ingenious Complication

SHARE

Travel at a click. The Marine Hora Mundi offers an instant-change dual-time function with memory function.

Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557
On the cusp of Watches & Wonders 2022, Breguet  (politely, as we would imagine) threw down the gauntlet to its esteemed horological counterparts for the GMT watch of 2022 with the release of the Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557. Having decided to revamp the Marine collection five years ago, the Marine Hora Mundi 5557 joins the likes of the time-only Marine 5517, Marine Chronographe 5527, and Alarme Musicale 5547 that were released in 2018. This introduction will not only see Breguet’s vision for the sporty outlier slowly coming to fruition but also allay lingering fears as many thought the initial move was a huge gamble by Breguet.

While the Hora Mundi is not entirely new to Breguet (having made its first appearance in the Classique Hora Mundi 5717 in 2011), this new piece signals its maiden foray into the Marine collection. In a nutshell, the Marine Hora Mundi 5557 allows the owner to cycle between the current and a preset time zone on demand. At the heart of the self-winding calibre 77F1 lies an instant-change dual-time display with a mechanical memory wheel responsible for this snappy action.

An additional module with programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory wheels accounts for the time differences between the various cities. Actuating the pusher at seven o’clock changes not only the time but also the retrograde date and day/night indicator without interrupting the basic timekeeping mechanism. Kudos to Breguet for gatekeeping this bit of innovation as four patents were previously filed to ensure this is a well-guarded secret. While no details about the module were disclosed, we will not be surprised silicon components are in play given they have excellent shape retention and do not require lubrication.

Though much of the calibre remains relatively untouched since the Classique Hora Mundi 5717, the aesthetics have been reinterpreted to match the sporting elegance of the Marine collection. Many will be thrilled to know that water resistance has been vastly improved as well. Inspired by Abraham-Louis Breguet’s ties with the French Navy which began in 1814, a world map set against the seven seas serves as the dial for the Marine Hora Mundi 5557. The base layer is crafted from gold, with the wave motifs first hand-guillochéd being adorned with a shade of abyssal blue. A sapphire plate is later superimposed, depicting the meridians, parallels and continents with a turquoise outline representing the coastlines.

Beyond the masterful dial, creation lies intricacies waiting to be discovered. The continent plates feature subtle horizontal brushing while the photorealistic renditions of the sun and moon are hand-hammered before being set in rose-gold and rhodium respectively. A “u-shape” hand indicating the date at 12 o’clock is finished with brouillage — an updated ancient watchmaking decoration that creates a matte yet shiny effect. True to the Marine collection is the luminous Breguet handset and Roman numerals set on the flange supporting the various dial elements. All of these are set in either a 43.9mm white or rose gold case with the emblematic case side decors and paired with either a leather strap, rubber strap or gold bracelet.

Profile: Yacht Sourcing making it happen in Indonesia

The Covid era has been challenging for Yacht Sourcing, but recent sales of new Fountaine Pajot catamarans, the launch of the 50m Vela, and Bali opening to international tourism point to positive times ahead.

Boum Senous (centre) and office staff at Yacht Sourcing’s head office in Bali

In contrast to some yacht dealers in Hong Kong and even in Singapore, Covid hasn’t given Indonesia’s Yacht Sourcing a record surge in boat sales over the past couple of years. With business led by the company’s two Bali sites and its shipyard in Sulawesi, the company decided to close its smaller Jakarta office.

“It has been tough,” admits Boum Senous, co-founder and Director of the multi-faceted company, which has been headquartered in Bali since it was formed in 2016.

However, due to a knock-on effect of the pandemic, Senous is quietly confident Yacht Sourcing and the general yachting market in Indonesia is on the cusp of a new wave.

Yacht Sourcing recently launched the 50m Vela from its South Sulawesi shipyard

Two recent sales of new Fountaine Pajot catamarans to clients in Bali have been among highlights, while the Belgian is also happy to announce that he plans to re-establish Yacht Sourcing in Jakarta by opening a new office in the current capital later this year.

“It has been a difficult time for the industry in Indonesia, especially on the charter side, but I feel like there’s something happening here. I don’t think we’ve ever had as many leads as we’ve had recently. I feel like people are more interested in yachting because Covid has changed people’s way of thinking,” says Senous, who has lived in Indonesia for well over a decade.

Yacht Sourcing’s recent sales to clients in Bali include a new Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42

“Post Covid, people are realising how appealing having your own boat is, to sail away and sleep in a beautiful bay instead of being confined in an apartment in Singapore or Jakarta. The awareness of yachting is building here.”

BALI’S STOCK RISES

While Jakarta remains the country’s business hub and its biggest city, with over 10 million people, Senous is most excited by notable changes in Bali, which has over 4 million people and will host this year’s G20 summit from November 15-16.

Senous believes Covid has led some high earners to move from crowded cities to the ‘Island of Gods’ in a bid for a more relaxed lifestyle, with beaches, mountains and water close by. Meanwhile, ongoing developments include the high-profile Bali International Hospital in Sanur, which is set to be the country’s largest international hospital when it opens in 2023.

Senous has lived in Indonesia for well over a decade and co-founded Yacht Sourcing in 2016

“I know plenty of CEOs and bosses of big companies in the palm oil, coal and mining industries who have moved to Bali with their families over the past year or two. Many have moved to Bali and commute to Jakarta by plane. I even know a senior employee of a major bank in Hong Kong who moved to Bali because he wanted the change of lifestyle,” Senous says.

“I believe Jakarta will continue being a business hub, but Bali will increasingly be the place to keep boats and sail from. That’s why we need offices in both places, while we’re also noticing more interest from Kalimantan.”

Yacht Sourcing’s head office is north of Kuta and oversees new yacht sales, brokerage, charter and yacht management, while maintenance and repairs are handled by the company’s well-staffed service facility in Serangan harbour.

The 16m Kelana was refit by Yacht Sourcing and is also available for charter

Compared to the likes of Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket, Bali remains small-scale in terms of yachting infrastructure, which includes the likes of the superyacht-friendly Benoa Marina and the nearby Royal Bali Yacht Club.

Facilities in neighbouring Lombok include Marina del Ray in the southwest and Marina Del Ray in the northwest, while across the water from Bali’s western tip is Boom Marina in Banyuwangi, on the east side of Java.

However, the most exciting potential is within the enormous Kura Kura development on Serangan Island, which is linked by a bridge to mainland Bali and its capital of Denpasar.

Yacht Sourcing, Boum Senous, Indonesia, Bali, boat, yacht, boating, yachting, Fountaine Pajot, Dufour, catamaran, MY4.S, MY5, MY6, Outborn, RIBS, Prana, Vela, The Maj Oceanic, phinisi, charter, Sulawesi, Jakarta

Kura Kura is set to transform the yachting scene in Bali when it opens

One of the country’s largest master-planned communities under construction, Kura Kura is a 500-hectare, tree-covered ‘eco-development’ including housing, shopping, cultural hubs and a marina slated to have over 100 berths.

“We need a big marina for Bali to move to the next level in yachting,” Senous says. “It’s all part of the government trying to make the island even more appealing to locals, foreign residents and visitors, with international-standard facilities.”

CATAMARAN APPEAL

In fact, one of Yacht Sourcing’s new Fountaine Pajot owners is a newcomer to Bali who chose to move to the island from one of Asia’s big cities. The client ordered an Astrea 42, one of the two Fountaine Pajot sailing cats sold by Yacht Sourcing in the past half a year.

The company’s recent sales also include the first unit of the Tanna 47 to be sold in Asia. The model is so new that the client, a long-time Bali resident, purchased it based on CGI renders of the model, which replaces the Saona 47.

“Both buyers trust the brand and bought models that suit the size they wanted for their family,” Senous says. “We’re having a lot of leads for Fountaine Pajot, both for sailing yachts and motor yachts.”

A Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42 has also been sold to Bali

Senous says catamarans could have a strong future in Indonesia and follow the likes of Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, where catamarans have proved very popular ways of cruising and exploring long coastlines and island chains.

“I believe Fountaine Pajot will do really well in Indonesia and we do have huge interest, as people are attracted to the basic benefits of catamarans, such as stability and far more space,” he says. “The other major selling point for powercats is fuel economy, which is why I think the brand’s motor yachts will also do well. There’s a bright future for catamarans in Indonesia, but we’re still at the beginning.”

The MY4.S is the new entry model for Fountaine Pajot motor yachts

Senous attended last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, where he saw the brand’s models and was particularly taken by the MY4.S, the new entry model for its motor yacht range, while other recent developments including an upgrade of the interiors of the MY5 and MY6.

“The new MY4.S is a beautiful motor yacht and I noticed they’ve really upgraded the interiors. I think their powercats work well for Indonesia because they’re ideal for people not that comfortable on a monohull, yet you’re not compromising on comfort because Fountaine Pajot has reached a high level of finish and luxury. We really want to push the motor yachts along with the sailing cats.”

Yacht Sourcing is particularly keen to promote the MY4.S in Indonesia

To build on the new interest, Yacht Sourcing is planning a major promotional event for Fountaine Pajot in Bali mid-year, having represented the brand in Indonesia since 2019.

STRONG BUILDS

Yacht Sourcing, whose portfolio also includes Dufour sailing yachts and Outborn RIBs, is distinguished from most dealers by owning a wooden-boat shipyard.

Located in Bira on the southeast tip of South Sulawesi, about 600km northeast of Bali, the shipyard builds yachts custom designed for clients and can work on up to three 30-60m hulls at a time.

Even during Covid, the construction and refit businesses have remained active and the shipyard recently launched the 50m Vela, which follows iconic charter phinisis such as the 55m Prana launched in 2018 and The Maj Oceanic, the 47m phinisi that splashed at the end of the following year.

Prana and The Maj Oceanic are among yachts that Yacht Sourcing lists for charter, while the company still manages the 60m, 15-cabin Aqua Blue, set to resume operations on April 30.

In a similar way that the charter business has been slow during Covid due to the dramatic reduction in visitors to Indonesia, even local cruising has been hampered by changing regulations and different rules for different areas.

Always looking forward, Yacht Sourcing has used the downtime to prepare for the future and is in the process of reorganising all its charter and management operations under a new company, By & Large, a collaboration with the company behind the popular Eight Degrees South restaurant in Bali.

“Yacht charter has been quiet for everyone here,” says Senous. “Now, with Bali opening to travellers from Singapore and elsewhere, I’m hoping we’ll receive a lot more visitors and people will start to look at chartering in Indonesia again.”
