The Tiong Nam Hospitality Group recently unveiled plans to integrate a state-of-the-art marina into its Pinetree Marina & Resort at Puteri Harbour, Johor. It has been managing the 107-room resort since 2018.

Facilities will include modern, secure berths designed to accommodate a wide range of boats, from small to luxury vessels. The expansion features a 76-berth public marina, with future plans for exclusive private yacht and megayacht marinas.

The marina will house a customs, immigration, and quarantine complex and amenities including 24-hour CCTV security, fuel docks and laundry services.

Strategically located just west along the coast from Johor Bahru, on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia, very close to Singapore and with easy access to major maritime corridors, Pinetree Marina & Resort is set to become a premier destination for yachting enthusiasts and luxury travellers in the region.

Marlborough Sounds Marinas – comprising three separate sites – sets new environmental benchmark for New Zealand, which become the first in the country to receive the prestigious International Clean Marina accreditation.

Three marinas run by Marlborough Sounds Marinas (MSM) – Picton, Waikawa, and Havelock – achieved a perfect score of 100 per cent in a rigorous independent environmental audit through the Clean Marina programmme. The feat underscores the collective marinas’ unwavering commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Marlborough Sounds through sustainable practices, waste minimisation, and pollution prevention.

MSM operates the three sites, located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island to facilitate boating in the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, offering a total capacity of over 2,000 vessels in wet and dry storage.

The region, which is home to the country’s largest wine-producing area, comprises over 20 per cent of New Zealand’s coastline.

The Clean Marina accreditation initiative, which helps marinas improve their environmental processes and ensure compliance, has seen participation from more than 60 marinas in Australia and the Pacific region. It is organised by the Marina Industries Association (MIA), a body that works alongside global marina associations, to develop sustainable marina industries through education, research and accreditation.

Environmental consultant Mackenzie Stacey from BMT, a maritime consultancy, who conducted the audits, praised the marinas for their thorough environmental management practices, saying the level of detail in their procedures was impressive. Indeed, scores of 100 per cent are unparalleled.

In preparation for the certification audit, staff at the marinas were involved in reviewing procedures and training manuals, updating websites – with a focus on environmental and operational information – renewing signage and reconfiguring waste sites. A new recycling centre at Picton Marina was also constructed.

“Every team member dedicated significant thought and effort, despite a busy season,” said Anouk Euzeby, Manager of MSM.

This milestone sets a new standard for environmental stewardship and positions New Zealand as a leader in sustainable marina operations.

Multihull sailing yachts offer a plethora of benefits that are practical, environmentally sound and particularly social. The latest offerings are a breeze to handle and abundantly spacious, too.

For those who are serious sailors as well as people who just want to have fun, there’s no question that when it comes to sailing yachts, if one hull is good then surely one or two more is better. Catamarans and trimarans remain closer to level than monohulls when under sail, which means their more spacious interiors can be enjoyed fully even when not at anchor or dock.

Yacht builders are keeping up with the latest trends, whether they’re environmental, technical or material. Multihull buyers are noticing how much more they have to offer, whether getting into yachting for the first time or seasoned veterans of monohulls.

So let’s start at the top, the creme de la creme in the world of sailing cats and trimarans. Some owners will want to handle the boat by themselves, with family and friends onboard. It’s important for their yachts to have good social areas and cabins, in addition to being easy to sail. Others will want a grand floating palace, for enjoyment with the more the merrier.

The Fountaine Pajot Isla 40: a popular, quality cruiser

From France, one of the world’s top multihull builders is the award-winning Fountaine Pajot, headed in Asia by Kevin Corfa – represented by Asia Yachting in Hong Kong, and The Yacht Sales Co in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Considered one of the finest builders in any hull configuration, the yachts built at the shipyards in Aigrefeuille and near La Rochelle are stylish and sexy. Beyond eye-catching and advanced technologically, Fountaine Pajot excels like few others in luxury manufacturing.

The Fountaine Pajot Isla 40 is the ideal size for a cruising catamaran at just under 12m with all the comforts required to enjoy cruising with family or friends. The first model in the range incorporates everything that has made Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans notable: distinctive lines and plenty of space, reversed bows, deck cladding, stylised hull portholes, and a sleek silhouette.

In the mid-size range, yet designed to break free of all limits and conventions, the Alegria 67 has enjoyed well-deserved success, courtesy of her myriad creature comforts for those who want to explore further afield. The Alegria 67 catamaran shares the same design philosophy as Fountaine Pajot’s very popular Samana 59, but with an extra touch of decadence.

Alegria 67 forward cockpit

With a waterline length of over 20m, the Alegria 67 includes high-quality equipment and original features such as the boat’s centrepiece: a large jacuzzi in the forward cockpit that can be filled with sea or fresh water.

At the top of the range is the Fountaine Pajot Thira 80, the brand’s 80ft flagship that earned a 2024 YACHT STYLE Award in the Production Sailing Catamaran category around the time of the Singapore Yacht Show, on the shores of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in April.

Also in France is Beneteau Group’s Lagoon Catamarans, the world leader in cruising catamarans, having built 7,000 units since it emerged as an offshoot of Jeanneau in 1984. Lagoon recently appointed  Asiamarine as its dealer in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

The new Lagoon 60 sailing cat will premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. As part of the brand’s 40th anniversary celebrations, in March, Lagoon staged a private premiere of its new 60 at the builder’s Exclusive Days at its shipyard in Bordeaux, where it hosted over 400 owners from around the world.

The Lagoon 60 sits in the sailing series between the 55 and Sixty 5, is part of the Premium line, and features the open aft deck introduced on the Lagoon 55 and drop-down side decks on each side of the cockpit. Designed by VPLP Design, the Lagoon 60 features a covered flybridge cockpit area with an L-shaped sofa, a dining table and loose chairs; more sofa and sunpad lounging is built in place forward of the helm.

Excess is the Beneteau Group’s catamarans brand with refreshing character evident in some of its video marketing: “As you all know, at Excess we have never really stopped playing. We decided to create our own catamaran model in Lego® bricks to celebrate the upcoming 3D release of our new model!”

The Excess 14

The producer is teasing its upcoming addition’s size as being between the Excess 11 and Excess 14; it will be unveiled soon at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

The Excess 11 benefits from the experience of her elders, without sacrificing all the comfort needed for enjoyable cruising. Its volume is worthy of a larger boat, whether in the saloon or the cabins with, for example, a 2m by 2m bed in the owner’s cabin or bathrooms with separate showers. On deck, she offers a large open cockpit and twin helm stations.

The Excess 14 is designed around a layout never seen before on the market, both in the owner’s version and in the charter version. Thanks to a collaboration with VPLP design, the lines of the Excess 14 have benefited from an understanding of ocean racing with a forward-set rig, a square-top mainsail, and a large overlapping genoa as standard to optimise the sail-area-to-displacement ratio.

Bali Catamarans, another French builder, earned a nomination at this year’s YACHT STYLE Awards for the Bali Catspace. One of three new models released in 2020, the Catspace is the premier smaller model with exceptional living space for its size.

Containing 70.4sqm of living quarters, it is a most spacious 40ft model (with an additional 25 per cent on many). Designed for 10-12 passengers, its four cabins have long external windows and each has a bathroom – unprecedented for a 40ft boat. A major innovation on board is an opening panel to either shelter the cockpit, or open the top in good weather.

Moving from France to Poland, Sunreef unveiled the Sunreef 80 and 60 sailing cats at Cannes in 2018, adding the 50 (2019) and 70 (2021) in subsequent years.

Sunreef 70 Eco

More recently, the Sunreef 60 Eco and 70 Eco are proving popular and were both nominated for YACHT STYLE Awards this year in the Production Sailing Catamaran category.

In 2022, Sunreef Yachts launched its first Sunreef 60 Eco sailing catamaran, which followed the launch of the Sunreef 80 Eco earlier in the year. Part of the brand’s Eco range of sailing and power catamarans, the Sunreef 60 Eco is equipped with the shipyard’s own composite-integrated solar panels built into the hull sides, superstructure and hardtop roof.

The Sunreef 70 Eco’s solar panels are also seamlessly integrated into its bimini roof. Covering an impressive 81.5sqm to generate 20kWp, the sailing catamaran’s photovoltaic system is coupled with an ultralight battery bank custom-engineered for this model. With a four-cabin layout, the sailing cat offers her guests the best of comfort and luxury.

Sunreef 35M Eco

The latest Sunreef 35M Eco superyacht, designed for silent, luxurious and emissions-free cruising, has a 14.7m beam that translates into expansive living areas on board. Positioned in the bow part of the main deck, the owner’s stateroom offers panoramic views and private access to the bow terrace. Alfresco lounging areas include an immense flybridge with a plunge pool and drinks bar.

Sunreef also recently revealed the first images of the Sunreef Zero Cat superyacht. Measuring over 90ft, this sailing concept, currently under development by the shipyard’s R&D department, will be able to produce clean hydrogen on board to provide the most sustainable yachting experience. Additionally, this model will benefit from a green power boost with the solar cells integrated into the yacht’s bodywork.

The Sunreef Zero Cat’s projected net zero emissions – no nitrogen oxides and no sulphur oxides – will also guarantee the highest level of safety, as no high-pressure hydrogen storage will be needed on board.

Another French shipyard, Neel Trimarans continues to set new benchmarks in innovation and design with the new Neel 52. With a racy, modern silhouette, elaborately designed hull and sleek lines, the Neel 52 exudes power, speed, safety and elegance. It was also a YACHT STYLE Award nominee this year in the Production Sailing Catamaran category.

The trimaran accommodates up to 12 passengers yet is easily handled by a small crew. Courtesy of its three hulls, it is also the only multihull of this size that can offer up to six double cabins and two crew stations as an option.

Leopard 42

The Marc Lombard Yacht Design Group has consolidated the key attributes of the acclaimed Neel 43 and Neel 47 in the new model: voluminous hull floats that provide stability, high freeboard, and a central ‘rockered’ hull, which facilitates tacking and manoeuvering when in port.

Built in Cape Town, and sea-trialled and tested off the coast of South Africa, Leopard Catamarans – overseen in Asia by Kit Chotithamaporn – are known for extraordinary craftsmanship and optimal performance. Both of Leopard’s award-winning sailboat and power catamaran lines are built with flexibility for the modern seafarer and offer a range of equipment and layout options.

The new hull form of the Leopard 43 features generous interior volumes – as well as larger berths, with greater dimensions in every cabin – offering unprecedented living space for her category.

Leopard’s other sailing options include the 42, 45 and 50 models. The Leopard 42 leaves no detail overlooked in size or possibility, and the signature coachroof lounge provides an expansive space.

The upper outdoor lounge in the Leopard 45 flybridge includes a seating area, a sunpad and a table like the one on the larger Leopard 50. With a never-before-seen lounging flybridge of this size, the Leopard 50 incorporates the best attributes from its predecessor, the Leopard 48, with more living space and options.

HH Catamarans are built in a state-of-the-art production facility in Xiamen, China. The parent company, Hudson Yacht Group, is dedicated to building the highest quality, most technologically advanced, luxury cruising catamarans in the world.

The eco-friendly HH44 is built in Xiamen, China

The major award-winning, electrified and carbon-reinforced HH44 is a game-changing, eco-friendly cruising yacht that is available in two options: Ocean Cruising (OC) or Sports Cruising (SC).

The OC is a fast, comfortable, family-friendly cruiser that skews toward ease of operation for bluewater cruising. It shares the same hull and interior fit and finish quality as the sportier HH44-SC, but features an aluminium mast, e-glass longeron, white gel-coat finish, and mini-keels as standard instead of daggerboards.

The SC integrates the latest in racing-boat technology, but remains comfortable as a family cruiser. This is a ‘no-compromise boat’ with C-shaped carbon daggerboards, a carbon rig, expanded solar array, and hybrid EcoDrive as standard equipment.

Turkey continues to develop as a manufacturing powerhouse for many industries, including yachting. Last year, Vietnam-based Seawind Catamarans established a purpose-built production facility in Turkey dedicated to producing the popular Seawind 1170 in the European market, whilst offering a full-service centre for all Seawind owners.

The new Seawind 1370 is a single-level 45ft bluewater cruiser with reverse bows to pierce waves, reduce pitching, and improve comfort and safety. With a smoother and more stable ride, it is designed for extended cruising and can be sailed easily by two people.

Prosail, based in Singapore, is the exclusive dealership there for HH Catamarans and Seawind – and for Corsair and Rapido trimarans too – with sales extending to Southeast Asia.

With all of these recent additions to the sailing multihull sphere, now might be your time to get some fresh wind in your sails.

Richard Allen, COO of Simpson Marine Group, expressed enthusiasm: “In Hong Kong, there are already a few Axopar boats in operation, including my own Axopar 37 Sun Top. We will build upon the success of ‘day boating’ here to drive interest and sales for Axopar in Hong Kong.”

New model in successful series represents a milestone in the evolution of flybridges, led by the unprecedented beach cockpit

Azimut launches the Fly 62

Launched on July 29, 2024 at the Avigliana production plant in Italy, the Fly 62 is not just an updated model in one of Azimut’s most-representative series – the builder calls it a milestone in the evolution of the segment.

“The shipyard’s path of innovation continues in the wake of the promise made to owners and enthusiasts: to offer, with each new model, uses of spaces and solutions that do not yet exist and that surprise,” the builder says, adding that the Fly 62 “represents the purest concept of design know-how, harmonising creative imagination with owners’ desires.

“Here, the desire is to draw ever closer to the sea, even, for the first time, on a flybridge designed for long stays on board.”

Azimut turns the cockpit towards the stern

For a segment traditionally characterised by a more separate access area to the water, Azimut’s response is radical in its apparent simplicity: to reinvent the cockpit and turn it towards the stern, creating a progressive descent towards the sea.

Called the Beach Cockpit, the transom opens outwards while the sofa is lowered, eliminating all physical barriers and creating a large sunbathing area close to the sea that is unique for a yacht in this segment.

The new hardtop designed by Alberto Mancini stands out for its hyper-modern lines

The exterior design is by Alberto Mancini, who drew inspiration from the recent trends in the automotive world and the functional and aesthetic revolution of SUVs. The volumes of the Fly 62’s superstructure advance towards the bow, allowing the cockpit to be developed while maintaining and evolving the sporty stylistic figure of the Azimut Fly Series.

The new hardtop designed by Mancini stands out for its hyper-modern lines, and the linearity of the horizontal development of the hull windows.

For the interiors, Azimut again collaborated with architect Fabio Fantolino for his second project with the shipyard. Fantolino created open spaces, free of visual obstacles, for a feeling of unrestricted closeness to the sea, while the interior environments have a clean and fresh design, made up of a few essential details.

There are three cabins plus one for crew, giving the Fly 62 enough berths for up to eight people. There are also three heads, plus one for the crew.

Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 1200 (900hp) engines, the carbon-fibre and GRP hull can reach a top speed of 32 knots.

The Fly 62 will make its global debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival (September 10-15).

Yacht manufacturer Nautor Swan has announced a strategic merger with the Sanlorenzo Group. The deal, effective immediately, sees Sanlorenzo acquiring a 60 per cent stake in Nautor’s shareholding, with full ownership slated for April 2028.

Nautor Swan merges

Nautor Swan’s iconic Boatbuilding Technology Centre will remain its primary production site

The alliance aims to create the largest player in the luxury nautical segment, focusing on product excellence and innovation. Nautor’s iconic Boatbuilding Technology Centre in Pietarsaari, Finland, will remain the primary production site, preserving the brand’s rich heritage.

Leonardo Ferragamo, who will retain his position as Nautor Swan’s President, emphasized the merger’s potential: “Today, my goal is to propel forward a brand that is so beloved and respected and ensure its longevity by entrusting it to one of the world’s leading nautical groups.”

Massimo Perotti, now CEO of Nautor Swan alongside his role at Sanlorenzo, outlined future plans that highlighted the synergies between Nautor Swan and Sanlorenzo. “We are talking about a niche brand, ultra-exclusive, whose philosophy is aligned with the one we have in Sanlorenzo,” he said.

Nautor Swan was founded in 1966 and has become a leader in producing yachts between 8m – 39m[1] . Today the manufacturer offers a range of offerings through its Nautor Swan Charter and Brokerage, Nautor Swan Global Service—which provides global assistance—and ClubSwan Racing, the sport division managed by professionals in the sailing world. Its ClubSwan also serves as a virtual yacht club.

The merger will facilitate continued advancements into research and development around new materials and sustainability. A four year period is planned between the closing of the agreement and the transfer of 100% of the shareholding planned for April 2028 to allow for a gradual integration of the two brands, Nautor Swan said.

A 37.5m explorer yacht, designed and engineered by Marcelo Penna, has been sold to a French owner, the Italian shipyard Cantieri di Pisa has announced.

1. Custom explorer 2. Cantieri di Pisa’s custom explorer

Cantieri di Pisa’s new CdP Custom Division will oversee the new 30m-plus explorer

The new technological custom explorer will be built by Cantieri di Pisa’s new CdP Custom Division, with a steel hull and composite superstructure moulded using advanced vacuum technology, which reduces tonnage and offers greater propulsion efficiency.

The yacht will be packed with luxurious comforts. A Jacuzzi, owner’s terrace, beach club, upper deck massage room, and two side-opening terraces are among the desirable features.

The new superyacht will be 37.5m long, with 8.15m at full beam.

Cantieri di Pisa is planning to launch the custom explorer by summer 2026.

The yacht is the first over 30m to be sold since Enrico Gennasio acquired the shipyard in 2021. A spokesman for AB Yachts, who represented the buyer in the deal, said the client had their heart set on a yacht built by the iconic Italian boat builder. The custom explorer will “undoubtedly set a new benchmark in the market for motoryachts in this category,” they said.

1. Custom explorer 2. Cantieri di Pisa’s custom explorer

With a steel hull and composite superstructure, the superyacht will have state-of-the-art equipment and home comforts

Ideal for cruising and chartering, six guest cabins and five crew cabins will all be ensuite. The owner’s suite is to be on the main deck with a private terrace. On the same deck, will be a full-beam VIP cabin. The captain’s cabin will be located on the bridge deck next to the wheelhouse.

The superyacht will be fitted with state-of-the-art equipment throughout. A garage amidships can side-launch a 6.5m tender and waverunners, while a well-equipped galley, pantries on all decks, and top-grade entertainment systems will keep guests comfortable on longer voyages.

The custom explorer will be powered by a pair of 1,000hp Man V8 engines for a cruising speed of 14 knots, at which it will have a range of 2,600 nautical miles. Top speed will be 15 knots.

Two diesel engines will hold the highest IMO III Epa Tier IV environmental rating and a hybrid battery pack will offer full electrical autonomy for navigation and anchorage in marine protected areas. The batteries also store enough power to turn the generators off for several hours at night, powering onboard services in silence.

The custom explorer sale comes in parallel with the launch and design of the three new lines of Cantieri di Pisa, the shipyard said.

Electric water mobility specialists Torqeedo played a key role in the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony by sending the heaviest electric boat to date along the Seine.

Any boat enthusiast watching this year’s Olympics opening ceremony in Paris will have been enthralled by Mistinguett. At 240 tonnes and 42m, she became the longest and heaviest electric boat to have sailed on the Seine, and played a pivotal role in the show’s grand parade of 90 boats transporting athletes during the ceremony while waving her own flag for sustainability.

Mistinguett was originally a diesel-powered vessel, until Torqeedo retrofitted the boat with an electric system using two Torqeedo Deep Blue 100i motors and six Deep Blue Battery 80 units. She was one of four boats powered by the German motor maker during the ceremony.

Viewing a more sustainable future, with more electric boats in France

The deployment of electric boats on the Seine showcased Paris’s commitment to reducing emissions at this year’s Games. France had said it wanted to halve emissions compared to the last Olympic Games.

Torqeedo, which develops and manufactures electric and hybrid drive systems for commercial and recreational use, provided an alternative to conventional engines. Its advanced propulsion systems offer quiet, emission-free cruising.

As the first fully electric ferry of its size on the Seine, Mistinguett, is set to become a figurehead for sustainable water transportation. The boat can hold up to 248 passengers and will ferry tourists up and down the Seine throughout the event. To allow for this range, each Deep Blue 100i motor with 100kW of input power is fed electricity by two Deep Blue Battery 80s.

Batteries powering Mistinguett on the Seine

Mistinguett also serves as a showboat for dinner cruises and arts events while cruising the Seine throughout the year, with two more Deep Blue Battery 80s required to power the hotel load of lighting, food refrigeration, and other applianes.

Matthias Vogel, who is Senior vice president of Torqeedo’s Customised Solutions Business Unit, said, “The conversion of the Mistinguett to an all-electric propulsion system demonstrates how traditional vessels can be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to glide quietly and emission-free across the water in the future.”

The French government is keen to see more retrofitting on boats sailing its 800km of rivers and 600km of canals. State-owned waterway navigation authority Voies Navigables de France (VNF) will subsidise up to 90 per cent of the costs involved in retrofitting boats with electric propulsion, it has said.

Bavaria-based Torqeedo has been developing customised electric propulsion solutions for the last 19 years.
