Swan 88 expands Maxi offerings

Swan 88 expands Maxi offerings

SHARE

Scheduled to debut in 2023, the Swan 88 is the new entry model to the Maxi Swan Yachts line, which also includes the 98 and 120.

The Swan 88 has a hull by German Frers and a sub-24m load line

Nautor’s Swan has revealed details of its new Swan 88, which is scheduled to debut in 2023 and have the production capacity for up to two units a year. Including features never seen on the brand’s models including a multi-level beach club, the 88 is the new entry model to the Maxi Swan Yachts line, which also features the 98 launched in mid-2020 and the 120, set to debut in 2021.

Designed by German Frers, the Swan 88 has an overall length of 28.27m (92ft 9in), a hull length of 26.54m (87ft 1in), waterline length of 24.99m (82ft 0in) and a beam of 6.72m (22ft 1in). Importantly, the yacht has a sub-24m load line length, which reduces costs and increases charter appeal.

Giovanni Pomati, CEO of Nautor Group, said: “The Swan 88 has been conceived to be the entry size to the Swan maxi world, compliant to MCA rules. We wanted to build a superyacht with an efficient platform in terms of management costs and ease of obtaining charter certifications.”

The stern area is two steps down from the rest of the cockpit

In the cockpit, modular benches can be arranged in various set-ups such as lounging and full dining. The manoeuvring area, with the winches and steering pedestals, is moved slightly forward to allow space at the stern for a completely new beach area where guests can recline or lie down, with access to the water as well as the large tender garage.

The area forward of the mast can be used for sunbathing or as a sunset lounge, with a large sail locker and anchor locker below the deck.

Appendages are optimised for cruising, with a standard moderate draft of 4m and options for shallow-draft, telescopic and performance keels. The twin rudders offer multiple advantages including a shallower draft and improved balance while sailing. The Swan 88 is designed to provide a soft, comfortable ride, with an optimised heeling angle of no more than 20 degrees.

The mast’s location in the middle of the yacht provides a good balance between the foretriangle and the mainsail, with the opportunity to fraction the triangle in four different stays – gennaker, code zero, jib and staysail – due to the long J measure. The staysail can be provided with a self-tacking track, and the mast and boom are constructed in carbon as standard.

Swan has created a new beach club, with a two-piece foldout transom door

Frers, 79, who has been designing for Swan since the 1980s, said: “The Swan 88 is an evolution of the previous models, but before designing the hull, we did a complete study of the balance, performance, position of the rig and shape of the sails.”

Lucio Micheletti collaborated on the exterior design, while Misa Poggi has designed the interior, following her work on the Swan 98.

Poggi said: “When you walk onto a boat, you should walk into a very comfortable, harmonious and magical place. This magic comes from the balance created between volume, geometries, architecture and materials.”

The beach club is one of the yacht’s most innovative features

The guest cockpit stairs lead down to the saloon and dining area. Forward to starboard is the VIP cabin (or a TV lounge), the owner’s suite is in the bow, while aft of the stairs are two guest cabins with the option of pullman berths.

The aft section is separated into two separate areas. The first is a half-crew, half-guest area, with a big galley and a dinette, which can be used as a crew mess or by guests, such as for breakfast or as a comfortable, protected place for children while sailing. Further aft is a dedicated crew area that’s accessed via the cockpit and has two twin bunk cabins, separate showers and space for appliances.

Alternative layout arrangements and range of mood concepts are available. Vanni Galgani, Product Line Leader, said: “Working on this project has been really inspiring for us. We reckon it will be a contemporary classic and a best seller in Swan history.”

Swan recently sold the fourth hull of the Swan 98, which is the first 98 to have an owner-forward layout and will be launched in spring 2022. The first two hulls were launched this year and the third is scheduled for the second quarter of 2021. Nautor’s Swan has built more than 100 yachts above 24m.

A Fountaine Pajot MY40 powercat is on its way to the Philippines, while Dufour announces a partnership with Sun Hing Shipyard in Hong Kong and the sale of a new 470 to China.

Fountaine Pajot staged the Asia debut of the MY 40 powercat in Singapore in 2019

The second Fountaine Pajot MY40 in Asia has been sold to the Philippines and is set to arrive in early 2021, following a stop in Hong Kong in late December. The three-cabin motor yacht has a top speed of 24 knots and a 750nm range, and was sold by Asia Yachting, which represents the French catamaran builder in the Philippines.

Kevin Corfa, Head of Fountaine Pajot and Dufour in Asia, said: “This Fountaine Pajot MY40 received a stunning colour wrapping and will be a head turner. She’s on her way to the Philippines and will arrive when the pandemic situation allows. The MY40 is a remarkable power catamaran, with the same space as a 55ft monohull motor yacht.”

The interior of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 powercat, a model on its way to the Philippines

In Hong Kong, sister company Dufour has established a partnership with Sun Hing Shipyard, which will commission all Dufour boats in the territory. With a new yacht sales team, the shipyard will also represent Dufour in Hong Kong in cooperation with Shenzhen-based Omnia Marine.

Sun Hing’s team includes Vivian Chan and John Tse, who sailed for Hong Kong in two Asian Games and multiple world championships in the 420 and 470 classes, with a third in the 2014 Asian Sailing Championship in Incheon, South Korea.

“Sun Hing is pleased to represent Dufour in Hong Kong and introduce the brand to more sailors,” says Tse, who still sails in many local races, mostly on a TP52. “My experience in the sport has provided me with a lot of knowledge about sailing, especially my time as a professional sailor. This provided me with a good foundation and now I’m continuing to learn about sailing boats with Dufour.”

Corfa was delighted with the new partnership, which provides a strong local sales presence and comprehensive after-sales service.

John Tse (right) of Sun Hing, Dufour’s new sales and aftersales partner in Hong Kong

“Dufour is extremely glad to partner with the respected, experienced team at Sun Hing Shipyard. They are ideal to represent this iconic brand in Hong Kong, being able to advise and support sailors who want comfortable yet fast sailing boats,” Corfa said.

“We’ve seen a spike of interest in sailing boats recently and we needed to answer it with a locally based sales force with strong experience in sailing, both on the water and at the shipyard for after-sales and commissioning. Vivian Chan, John Tse and their team will be of tremendous help for local sailors in choosing the right boat and taking care of it. We warmly welcome Sun Hing to our team.”

Dufour, which Fountaine Pajot bought in 2018, also announced that it sold its first 470 to Asia following the purchase of the new model by an owner in China. The new yacht will arrive in 2021.

The Dufour 470 was unveiled during the World Wide Nautic Days and has already been sold to China

In early December, Dufour held the official online premiere of the 470 and the flagship 61 – its two newest models – during the World Wide Nautic Days, which comprised five sessions across different time zones for dealers, clients and prospects around the globe.

Fountaine Pajot held a similar event the following day and included presentations of its new Isla 40 sailing yacht and MY40 powercat, with sessions split across sailing catamarans and motor yachts.

“Fountaine Pajot Nautic Days was a success in connecting potential customers with the brand by providing an exclusive overview of the construction and commissioning process of the latest sail and motor yacht models,” said one dealer, who had several clients online. “The event is a good example of how Fountaine Pajot is adapting to the new digital age and forming a strong network with a growing fanbase.”

The Italian builder is busy finishing the 38.2m Grande Trideck, its biggest-ever yacht, for delivery in early 2021.

The Azimut Grande Trideck can reach 24 knots with twin 2600mhp engines

Azimut Yachts is on course for an early 2021 delivery of its first Grande Trideck, which has a length of 38.5m (125ft 4in) and a beam of 7.9m (25ft 11in), and is the largest yacht ever built by the yard.

Alberto Mancini designed the exterior following his work on the Grande S10, which followed Stefano Righini designs for the 25, 27, 30, 32 and 35 Metri models in the brand’s superyacht collection. Achille Salvagni designed the interior, having worked on all other current Grande models apart from the S10.

Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture (PLANA) handled water lines and worked with the Azimut Research and Development centre to design the displacement-to-planing (D2P®) hull.

The raised aft cockpit shelters the beach club and provides privacy for the private patio forward

Notable features include an extended, raised aft cockpit, which is set slightly above the main deck and can receive guests from the central gangway. The cockpit offers spectacular views and leads forward and down a few steps to a ‘private patio’ before the saloon, which is focused on social areas and doesn’t feature a formal dining area. The main deck also houses the kitchen and owner’s suite.

Outdoor areas include the full-height beach club on the lower deck, where the transom can open to expand the entire space to over 30sqm. Forward, a separate garage houses the tender and water toys. The lower deck also features four guest cabins and four crew cabins.

The upper deck has outdoor areas fore and aft, where there’s a sheltered dining area. The deck also has a service galley, which can be substituted by an additional VIP cabin.

The Trideck offers four decks with large outdoor areas

The sun deck contains a forward bar and a custom spa tube surrounded by a sun pad and freestanding furniture. Forward is a slanted windshield that finishes in a vertical windbreaker.

The entire superstructure is laminated in carbon-fibre, with added vinylester and epoxy resin, which reduces overall weight. The Trideck offers twin 2400mhp or 2600mhp engines that deliver a top speed of 23 or 24 knots and a cruising speed of 20 or 21 knots respectively.

World Series to kick off America’s Cup

World Series to kick off America’s Cup

SHARE

The World Series in Auckland from December 17-20 marks the first official race of the 36th America’s Cup cycle. By Bruce Maxwell.

Crowds were out for successive AC75 launches in Auckland

Three launches of “second generation” 75ft foiling monohulls for the America’s Cup, all within four days, left the pundits scrambling to make sense of what challengers think they need to beat the cup-holding Kiwis.

Prada World Series matches in Sardinia and the Solent were precluded by the pandemic, so none of the high-finance, high-tech teams have had the opportunity to sail against each other so far. The Auckland event from December 17-20 will be their first chance. That is followed by the Prada Cup for Challengers from January 15-February 22 before the America’s Cup presented by Prada is held in Hauraki Gulf waters off Auckland from March 6-21.

Ominously New York Yacht Club is back in the fray to recapture “the auld mug” that they won in 1851 off England’s Isle of Wight and ferociously retained until 1983 when Australia II made an initial breakthrough.

This time their American Magic syndicate has been building up very quietly, first with The Mule training vessel, then with their first 75ft foiling monohull called Defiant, and now Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour has been graced with their probable race boat, Patriot.

Patriot from New York Yacht Club American Magic

Still capable of much fine-tuning, skipper and executive director Terry Hutchinson said: “We could not be more excited, after all the hard work to get her designed, built, transported and fitted out for sailing. It is pretty remarkable”.

Kiwi Dean Barker, American Magic’s helmsman, who was the losing defender in Auckland in 2003, and also lost the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013 after going 8-1 up in a best-of-17 series, said: “Without any regattas yet, we still don’t know where we stand in the whole pecking order. But I think the final product we are putting in the water is very special.”

Asked how the new boat differs from Defiant, Barker said: “The most notable difference is the helm position. It is a lot more forward, so the helmsman has a quite different perspective. We hope Patriot’s biggest trait is that she is going to go a lot faster.”

Principal designer Marcelino Botin said: “This team didn’t exist three years ago. Now we have three boats launched. We are all interested to see how this boat performs compared to our predictions and the previous boat.”

Observers said the highly-polished gloss finish concealed some aspects, but pointed to a more flared bow, which Botin said was “just maximising driving force and minimising the heeling moment”.

Ineos Team UK showcases Britannia in Auckland

Ineos Team UK christened their second AC75 Britannia II and even harked back to the song Rule, Britannia (Britannia rules the waves). Britain has never actually won the America’s Cup, although the launch press release did say that Charlie Barr, who won the AC on behalf of NYYC in 1899, was originally a Scottish fisherman.

Sir Thomas Lipton, whose ornate Singapore Straits Regatta Trophy can be seen today at Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, was also a five-time challenger.

Britannia II is helmed by four-time OIympic gold medal winner Sir Ben Ainslie, who was on an AC-winning side sailing for America in defeating Barker in the unbelievable 2013 series. Fellow Olympic

gold medallist Giles Scott is tactician.

Said Sir Ben: “The America’s Cup is a magnificent competition, with an extraordinary history, and I believe that for one of the first times in British history, we are going to arrive at the start line with a

truly competitive boat.”

Sir Ben Ainslie on stage at the Britannia launch

This effort is backed by Ineos Chairman and Founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The pundits were not so sure.

“When it came to Ineos Team UK’s launch, the change in style could barely have been more stark,” said one. “Few were expecting such a radical looking design. Normally, such a big step from one boat to the next instead of a seamless evolution rings alarm bells, but this is no ordinary Cup.”

The team’s chief designer is Nick Holroyd. “The hull’s got two functions”, he says. “It’s your launch vehicle and it’s an aerodynamic body that you put under the rig. You’re dropping the keel line down to meet the water to improve the aerodynamic seal, so you are pushing that one pretty hard. And then, the boat accelerates hard from about 10-18 knots when it takes off, so you start looking at the drag of the hull through that speed regime and try to get into the air as quickly as you can.”

The previous AC50 foiling catamarans very occasionally exceeded 50 knots, but were mostly in the 40-plus knots range. The AC75 foiling monohulls are expected to be faster. Nobody knows yet by how much.

Max Sirena (centre) and wife Tatiana at Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s ‘Boat 2’ christening

Third launch was the Italians of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. This second Luna Rossa was blessed by Father “Pa” Peter Tipene, Dean of Auckland Cathedral, and christened by Tatiana Sirena, wife of team director and skipper Max Sirena.

Ferrari Maximum Blanc de Blanc was broken on the bows and local Maori welcome rituals observed, so her arrival was in every way auspicious. All she now has to do is go faster than everybody else.

Australia’s Jimmy Spithill is helming this one, and he has won the AC for America before, but he didn’t get a look-in as the Italians acknowledged assorted sponsors, notably the remarkable Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of Prada Group.

Designer is Horacio Carabelli. “We’re pretty happy”, he said.

Says one AC website pundit: “What stands out most of all aboard the Italian design is how the curved, humpback-style sheerlline creates a hull and deck that is now treated as a lifting surface as well.

Like NYYC’s Patriot, Luna Rossa is a second-generation AC75 and an evolution of the original design

“Such is the apparent wind speed over the deck that reduced drag is no longer the only goal. At these wind speeds, lift can be created to contribute to the forces that are raising the entire boat out of the water.”

The Ferretti Group brand reveals its new wide-body Navetta 30, which joins the 33, 37 and 42 models in its displacement line.

The new Custom Line Navetta 30 has an exterior by Filippo Salvetti

Custom Line has released details and images of its new Navetta 30, the superyacht brand’s first-ever collaboration with both exterior designer Filippo Salvetti and the Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel architectural studio that handled interiors. The yacht’s design team also includes the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Department led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

With a length of 28.43m (93ft) and a beam of 7.3m (24ft), the wide-body yacht is 15ft shorter than the Navetta 33 yet just 8in narrower. Classified in CE category Class A, the brand’s new entry model has a volume close to 200GT, “offering volumes never achieved before in this market segment” according to Ferretti Group.

Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designed the interiors and much of the furniture

The yacht features natural materials like leather, wood and rope, and emphasises curves and circular forms in a nod to seafaring traditions. The colour scheme on hull one is dominated by blue, brown leather and light wood, while the interior flooring features teak planks and longitudinal black Wenge inserts.

All the furniture and furnishings are custom made and highlights include the stern flag mast, teak ceilings and the curved, solid-wood window frames. Decorative wall-mounted lamps enrich the spaces with reflections and light effects.

The yacht offers over 320sqm (3,450sqm) of space on the lower deck, main deck, upper deck and the sundeck. Accommodation includes a master stateroom on the main deck and four guest cabins – some with tilted hull sides – on the lower deck, which has a captain’s cabin and two double crew cabins, all with ensuite bathrooms, in the bow.

Continuing the blue theme, the master suite is forward on the main deck

The main deck has a 34sqm cockpit that can be used as a both a dining and social area, and which connects to the living room. In the central lobby, an all-teak staircase links the lower, main and upper decks. To port is the galley by Ernestomeda, with access to the crew quarters on the lower deck.

On the starboard side, a day head precedes the 35sqm owner’s suite, which has an open study, large windows, central bed, roomy walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom with twin basins, toilet and a big shower.

The upper-deck skylounge leads to an aft deck with dining for 10 and a full-beam beam sofa

The upper deck has an exterior lounge with a full-beam sofa and a dining table seating up to 10, leading to a 23sqm interior skylounge sofas, poufs, stools and chaises longues.

The helm station is fitted with the LOOP system by Naviop-Simrad, which integrates the management of propulsion, navigation and monitoring functions in the same naval-style interface, consisting of six 24-inch touch screen monitors or six 16-inch monitors. For maximum safety when manoeuvring, the unit has two side bridge wings.

The foredeck features a 32sqm ‘Sunset Lounge’ with custom-made freestanding furniture including a big forward-facing sofa and two chaise longues.

The forward part of the upper deck features a 32sqm ‘Sunset Lounge’

Aft, an sweeping exterior spiral stairway connects the upper deck with the 35sqm sundeck, which includes an aft lounge with a huge, full-beam sofa, as well as a forward bar with seats looking out to sea. The entire area can be sheltered by a bimini.

In the stern, aft of the engine room, the garage can accommodate a Williams Sportjet 435 tender and a jet ski. It’s fitted with an advanced version of Ferretti Group’s patented DMT (Dual Mode Transom), offering a double door movement and an additional feature that keeps the garage completely dry when closed and acts as ramp when open to make it easier to launch and recover the tender.

The sundeck, which can be covered by a bimini, has a full-beam sofa aft and a bar forward

The yacht is designed to use an optional plug-in hybrid propulsion system to reduce CO2 and NOX emissions. The standard propulsion is two MAN i-6 engines rated 800mhp each, although hull one has MAN V8 engines rated 1000mhp, which offer a transatlantic range of about 2,000nm at 10 knots (preliminary data).

The other engine options are two MAN V8 engines rated 1,200mhp and two 2 CAT C18 engines rated 1,150mhp, both versions offering a top speed of 15 knots (preliminary data). The Navetta 30 can be fitted with zero speed function stabiliser fins and a Seakeeper.

The beach area is generous for a 93ft motor yacht

Comfort at anchor and during navigation has been improved due to a new damping coupling on the propulsion line and to the evolution of the acoustic insulation.

The soundproofing treatments are the result of mathematical analysis targeted at each single source of noise and vibration, with soundproofed ceilings and the installation of a floating floor that reduces sound transmission from the engine room to the other areas.

Absolute reveals new 50 Fly

Italian builder Absolute has released images of its upgraded 50 Fly, the second-smallest model in its Flybridge range.

Absolute’s new-look 50 Fly follows the debut of its Navetta 64

Absolute has released images of the Generation 2021 version of its 50 Fly, whose new features include improved views due to the reduction of the horizontal ‘swords’ on the main-deck glazing and removal of the vertical pillars on the cabin windows.

Other changes include lowered gunwales along the side decks, an upgraded hardtop with openable hatch, a modern entertainment system and many interior upgrades.

The flybridge has a dining table for eight, full wet bar and full-beam sunbathing area

The Italian shipyard describes the flybridge as being among the largest in the 50ft range and it includes an aft C-shaped sofa and a dining table for up to eight people.

To starboard is a full galley with fridge, sink, telescopic tap and optional barbecue and icemaker, as well as a twin-seat helm station. To port is a forward-facing corner sofa connected to a full-beam sunbathing area forward.

Aft of the cockpit, the 50 Fly has a hydraulic swim platform

The foredeck is another outdoor area and features a sofa and a triple sunpad, while the aft cockpit has an aft-facing sunpad connected to a sofa and dining table, plus a new optional privacy sunshade that can retract into the ceiling.

Inside, the open L-shaped galley to port is well equipped and can be visually separated from the forward saloon by an electric sliding glass screen.

The aft galley leads to a raised saloon with facing sofas

The saloon is up a step and features a large C-shaped sofa and a table to port, while to starboard is a two-seat sofa and the helm station, which benefits from a new side door.

The furniture has been redesigned to offer new stowage spaces and comfortable support surfaces, while new materials include a combination of glossy dark oak and matt light oak, plus a sand oak floor with saw-cut effect for greater durability.

The full-beam master cabin midships has larger windows than the previous version

On the lower deck, the full-beam master cabin midships benefits from clear views through pillarless windows either side and features roomy cabinets, many stowage spaces and an ensuite bathroom accessed through a new sliding door.

The full-beam forward VIP cabin also has new sliding-door access to a bathroom that also serves as the day head and bathroom for the twin guest cabin to starboard, which has a walk-in closet. There’s also a crew cabin aft that can also be used for an extra guest.

Founded in 2002 and based in Piacenza, Absolute designs and builds luxury yachts from 47-73ft in Navetta, Flybridge and Coupé ranges. Its dealers in Asia include Hong Kong-based Absolute Marine.

Benetti reveals new Class, Custom yachts

Benetti reveals new Class, Custom yachts

Benetti has released details of the Motopanfilo 37M from the Italian builder’s Class category and the 67m Custom yacht FB284.

The Motopanfilo 37M features a bronze painted ‘ribbon’ around the aft bulwark

After this year’s launches of the Diamond 145 from its Class category yachts and the first Oasis 40M, Benetti has unveiled details of the Motopanfilo 37M due to premiere in late 2021 and the 67m custom build, FB284, an on-spec build due to launch in late 2022.

The 121ft, four-deck Motopanfilo sits at the heart of the builder’s Class family of yachts, in-between the Mediterraneo 116 and Fast 125.

The Motopanfilo’s observation deck offers a private, romantic retreat

The Motopanfilo tips its hat to the 1960s Motopanfilo style epitomised by Benetti. Motopanfilo is an Italian word that was used in the early 1960s to denote the large motor yachts that became synonymous with glamour and the jet set lifestyle, and much-coveted objects of desire among socialites, royalty and prominent personalities from the worlds of business and entertainment.

Francesco Struglia designed the 36.8m yacht’s exteriors, revisiting the original midship construction elements that linked the hull and superstructure, and has combined them in a single ‘shell’. Bronze paint is used to create a seamless ‘ribbon’ that defines the bulwark and runs from the main deck to the upper-deck overhang.

Lazzarini Pickering Architetti’s interior design emphasises the yacht’s ‘ribs’

Standout exterior areas include the observation deck on the hardtop, where a private cocoon surrounded by glass offers a private retreat, while the transom door opens up to create a bathing platform and reveal a private area for sunbeds sheltered by a canopy. The garage for the tender and water toys is to the side.

The interiors are by Claudio Lazzarini and Carl Pickering from Lazzarini Pickering Architetti, whose work for Benetti includes the 52m Sai Ram launched in 2004. Light wood has been used on both the floors and the gently curved ceilings, while the nautical theme can be seen in the touches of white and blue wood.

The tops of the cabin walls follow the gentle curve of the hull

The owner’s suite is in the bow of the main deck while the four guest cabins, all able to accommodate double beds, are situated on the lower deck where a small sauna can be installed.

The displacement hull can reach a maximum speed of 16 to 18 knots, depending on the choice of MAN V12 engines.

Giorgio M. Cassetta designed the exterior of the 67m FB284

Soon after the recent coin ceremony for the 62m FB283, Benetti revealed details of the FB284, a 67m build and part of the shipyard’s Custom collection.

With an exterior by Giorgio M. Cassetta, the six-deck megayacht is Benetti’s latest to be built on a platform also used by the 63m Metis and three yachts in build – the 65m FB270, 65m FB274 and 67m FB278 (Project Fenestra).

The outdoor lounge forward of the owner’s cabin on the upper deck of FB284

The main deck features a particularly long lounge furnished with spacious sofas and a dining table seating 14. Forward are a spacious pantry and big, square-shaped galley preceding the two VIP cabins.

The other four guest cabins are on the lower deck, which also has accommodation for up to 19 crew. The spacious beach club features a hammam, bath and shower, while a gym can also be fitted depending on the owner’s needs.

FB284 has saloons on the main deck (pictured) and upper deck

The upper deck is dedicated to the owner. The master stateroom in the bow has a private study and two separate bathrooms, one with a bath and shower, the other with a bath, and both with long basin tops. There’s another spacious lounge, just a little smaller than the main-deck saloon, while the aft deck has a big dining table seating 14, sofas and a bar with stools.

The bridge deck is designed as the party deck. The shaded area can optionally be closed off to form a veranda fitted out according to the owner’s needs, with the outdoor lounge areas served by a bar.

The owner’s suite forward on the upper deck offers expansive views

A well-hidden outdoor stairway leads to the almost 90sqm sun deck, which has a bar, sofas and a forward Jacuzzi installed in a podium.

Camper & Nicholsons International has been receiving strong enquiries for the first 42.5m Explorer Ice Class, which has been designed by Karatas Yacht Design and will be built in Turkey by Arkin Pruva for a 2022 delivery.

The Explorer Ice Class is safe, comfortable and built for long journeys,” said Sebastien Bernard, a Thailand-based Sales Broker for Camper & Nicholsons. “Her reinforced steel hull is built to sail in icy regions and her 4,000nm range allows her owner to reach any destination safely and comfortably.”

Described by the brokerage as ‘the expedition vessel of the 21st century’, the Explorer Ice Class is a brand-new design and will have a Rina Ice Class D steel hull with aluminium superstructure. The yacht has at-anchor stabilisers, a top speed of 14 knots and a trans-oceanic range of 4,000nm at nine knots.

The rugged 139ft motor yacht will have a steel hull built under Rina Ice Class D

Arkin Pruva, which has been building superyachts up to 55m since 2006, is based in the Antalya Free Zone, which enables it to build and export yachts at a reduced price due to VAT and tax exemptions.

Karatas has created an eye-catching exterior and great views through huge glass panels on the side of the main and upper decks. Lifestyle amenities include a gym, beach club and outdoor Jacuzzi, with options such as an aft-deck pool.

A swimming pool is among options for the aft area of the main deck

The four-deck yacht offers 650sqm (7,000sqft) of guest living space and accommodation for 12 guests in six suites, two of which are configured as master staterooms – on the upper deck and forward on the main deck. The lower deck includes two VIP suites and two twin cabins, while forward is crew accommodation for nine.

On the main deck, the 90sqm aft cockpit can either be designed as a space to carry tenders and toys, a large exterior lounge or an infinity-edged swimming pool.

The interior has been conceived to offer a bright, zen-like ambience, although styling can be customised. The main saloon is accessed via full-height glass doors and features a bar counter, open-plan lounge and formal dining area. The forward master stateroom features a private saloon and dining area, dressing room and full ensuite bathroom with Jacuzzi tub.

The upper deck features the second master stateroom, wheelhouse and an aft deck that can be used by guests or exclusively by the owner. The teak side decks lead towards the bow, which has a forward-facing bench seat and table ahead of the bridge.

The upper deck is home to one of two master suites

The 102sqm flybridge has space for freestanding loungers to aft, an al fresco dining area and bar midships and a Jacuzzi forward.

The lower-deck beach club creates further outdoor space and provides easy access to and from the water, while inside is a lounge and gym. There’s also a garage at the stern for the tenders plus the shore and water-based exploration equipment.

Construction work starts on the 62m custom yacht FB283 with the laying of the keel and placing of the coin.

Sebastiano Fanizza, Benetti’s CCO, speaks at FB283’s coin ceremony

Benetti has celebrated the laying of the keel of the 62m FB283 with a traditional ‘coin ceremony’ in Livorno. The five-deck custom yacht has a steel displacement hull and aluminium superstructure, with exteriors and interiors by Giorgio M. Cassetta, and hull lines by Van Oossanen.

Dating back to ancient Roman times, the ‘coin ceremony’ tradition features the placing of a coin under the keel to bring good luck to the vessel and to its crew and passengers.

The coin is placed under the keel of the 62m, five-deck FB283

Sebastiano Fanizza, Benetti’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “To build FB283, Benetti is making use of its great experience in the realisation of custom yachts, proving to be able to make the most of its know-how, winning production and engineering processes. The owner appreciated this aspect along with Benetti’s innovation capabilities and the yard’s ability to give life to his requests.”

The owner’s requirements for the custom yacht are speed, silent running, autonomy and fun for the family. With a tapering stern and long bow, FB283 is expected to have a cruising speed of around 20 knots and significant autonomy. The yacht also features lots of storage space for diving equipment, a tender and water toys.

Cassetta said: “Right from the outset, we established a transparent and constructive relationship with the owner, which made it possible to define this exciting project in a wealth of detail. We’re very grateful for being given the freedom to envisage a project that will be a milestone for our firm.”

Nicola Nicolai Yacht Consulting & Project Management acted as pre-purchase advisor and will manage the build process as owner’s representative and project manager.
