Belatrix, Wild Honey and TuTu Tango were among winners as the newly formed Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines successfully organised the first edition of the Corregidor Cup in Manila Bay.

An initiative of Albert Altura, the first Corregidor Cup was organised by the newly formed Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines in collaboration with the Corregidor Foundation and the Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina, where the three-day event was based.

The resort is situated at the southwest corner of Manila Bay, south of Corregidor Island. The regatta concept was to race around Corregidor and its associated islands, which formed part of the ‘Fortress Corregidor’ that was established in the late 19th century and early 20th century to protect Manila from seaborne attack and where two important battles took place during the Second World War.

The original classes were IRC Racing, CHS Cruising, Classic and Ocean Multihull. Unfortunately, two of the expected Classic Class boats were unable to make it, so David Wheeler’s Freewheeler – a Cape Carib 33 launched in 1977 – joined the Cruising Class. All races started at Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina, with the third race finishing at Corregidor.

The start of racing was delayed for just over an hour waiting for the Philippine Coast Guard’s approval for the regatta to take place. After a lot of phone calls and visits to the local Coast Guard office, approval was finally received, and racing went ahead.

One short race and one long race were held on the Friday. With a steady 12-15 northeast wind blowing, all classes rounded Fort Drum (El Fraile Island).

First off was the IRC Racing fleet with Belatrix, Jun Villanueva’s Ice 52, leading the way. Albert Altura’s Beneteau First 40 CR, Hurricane Hunter, got off to a bad start and had to retire from the first race due to a jammed halyard, which was fixed in time for the day’s second race.

The longer second race sent the IRC fleet around Corregidor Island and Monja Island, the westernmost island of the Corregidor Group. The wind increased to 16-18 knots, with a large squall hitting the whole fleet in the middle of the afternoon which tested the crews and equipment, but no damage was sustained.

In the evening, crews enjoyed a reggae party that had to be moved from the beach to El Patio Restaurant at the last minute due to the rain. The Caylabne did a great job in establishing a venue for the official welcome and prize ceremony. Every day a bottle of Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum, accompanying ginger beer and a cocktail shaker was awarded to each Class winner, all presented by our own ‘Sailor Jerry’ Rollin, President of the Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines.

The race on Saturday started at Caylabne Bay and finished off at Corregidor South Beach. Again with a multitude of different mark roundings, the fleet was again challenged with another squall, which this time accounted for some minor breakages.

The Ocean Multihull fleet were approaching the finish and not laying the mark when the squall hit and the big boats were lifted up to the finish led by Roman Azanza’s TuTu Tango.

Corregidor Foundation had prepared a sumptuous lunch for the crews on South Beach followed by guided tours in ‘Tranvia’ buses around the preserved memorial island with poignant remembrances of the battles fought there during World War Two.

The Rock Band, K O Jones, was ready, the stage was set and the dinner prepared, but again the weather did not play ball. The rock concert and dinner were cancelled to allow boats to return to the safety of Caylabne Bay Marina. A great disappointment made up, somewhat, by a great day of sailing.

Day three started with 12-15 knots as the classes set off around the islands. Following a last-minute request from the Cruising Class, the course was changed to go around Corregidor Island with a downwind run of six miles.

Wild Honey, James Villareal’s Beneteau Oceanis 41, led the fleet around the 23-mile course, beating Rene Ticson’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 by a mere 18 seconds on corrected time to seal the class win from the ex-Doni Altura J35 Vivaldi, with Alen Yotoko sailing her for the first time in 10 years.

On the way down the back of Corregidor Island, the Cruising fleet met the IRC fleet that was rounding the island the other way. It was a moment commented on and enjoyed by many in the Cruising fleet who rarely see the IRC boats after the start.

In the end, the IRC Racing Class featured a mixture of race winners, with Jun Villanueva’s Ice 52 Belatrix winning the class on countback after having equal points with Jun Avecilla’s Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star.

The awards lunch was held on the lawn in front of Kites and Sails, named after the kites that nest around the resort and the sails of the boats that moor there. The event sponsors were thanked and their representatives presented the trophies. More Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum went down very well with the sailors.

Katherine ‘Trin’ Custodio, Executive Director of World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines, presented prizes and was assured of the sailing community’s support for the WWF ideals.

Albert Altura, the event’s initiator, thanked Cathy Tolentino of Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina for hosting the event, Cynthia Carrion of Corregidor Foundation for hosting the fleet on the island and Jerry Rollin for pulling the whole thing together.

Jerry Rollin thanked Pen Avilla and Rye Lee Cassi and the race management team for their work and announced that the next Corregidor Cup would take place from November 16-19, 2023.

Mohamed Alshaali, co-founder and Chairman of Gulf Craft, said: “Across our 40 years, we have built a strong foothold both locally and internationally by providing our customers with a wide array of vessels.

“While our superyachts continue to intrigue customers around the world, we’ve also had a terrific response locally and in the region to our leisure line of vessels. As a result of this demand, we have expanded our offering with the introduction of two new models to provide our customers with more choice to find the perfect boat or yacht to suit their needs.”

However, the stars of the four-day show were Northrop & Johnson’s trio of superyachts, which included the return of the 30m Mia Kai from the 2019 edition and the first-time appearances of the 39m Indiana – like Mia Kai, built by Bilgin in Turkey – and 34m Xanadu, the Moonen build formerly known as Xanadu of London.

The trio all cruised together on the opening day, carrying many government officials and other VIPs, showcasing the magnificent Phang Nga Bay scenery close to Phuket. The second and third days were dedicated to visitors inspections of the 18 yachts on display, while the fourth and final day was reserved for cruises for selected guests.

The new flagship for the French builder’s Swift Trawler series offers 600nm-plus range, beds for up to eight guests, lots of storage and practical outdoor areas.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

Beneteau has been busy showcasing its Swift Trawler 48, the new flagship of the ‘seaworthy passage maker’ series that starts with the 35 and includes the 41 in Sedan and Fly versions, while also inspiring the Grand Trawler 62.

Measuring 14.74m with a beam of 4.50m, the Swift Trawler 48 shares the same teak slat fashion plates framed in stainless-steel as seen on the Grand Trawler 62. It also features naval architecture by MICAD, although interior and deck design is by Andreani Design, whereas Nauta Design handled these areas on the 62.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The successor of the former 47, the Swift Trawler 48 is rated for 12 persons in CE Category B, with the standard pair of Cummins QSB 6.7 litre 380hp engines providing a top speed of 21 knots, while the upgraded 425hp engines give a top speed of 25 knots.

MICAD has designed a semi-planing hull that optimises fuel efficiency across the speed range, with 1,930 litres of fuel on board offering a 600nm-plus at nine knots displacement speed or 280nm at 18 knots efficient planing speed, both while retaining a fuel reserve of 10 per cent. Add in 640 litres of fresh water and this allows for considerable autonomy away from the dock.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The aft cockpit can fit a folding table, two director chairs and a large bench seat, while the foot-pedal operated sliding flybridge stairs, starboard acrylic ‘wind stopper’ door and overhead handrail are among functional features.

The double transom gate opens onto a large swim platform with an optional hydraulic lifting system able to carry a 350kg dinghy, while the bathing ladder has swimming-pool handrails.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The generous flybridge offers 215sqft of floor area. Adjustable backrests at the forward end of L-shaped sofas either side of the helm enable guests to either face the table area or forward, such as during passage making.

Options include a flybridge T-top with inset sliding soft-top. Aft is a transverse wet bar facing forward, while the aft flybridge space allows for sun loungers or toys.

The foredeck includes the option of a sunpad with lift-up sections creating forward seating. The asymmetrical deck layout allows for a wide, well-protected starboard side deck with high bulwarks.

The interior is accessed through patio doors and includes a large, L-shaped aft galley aft to port with a full-height 255-litre fridge freezer and large overhead lockers outboard. The standard galley has a gas oven or optional multi-function electric oven, a clever ‘magic corner’ pull-out stowage unit, cupboards and drawers, plus space for an optional dishwasher.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The raised-edge Corian worktop features a gas or induction cooktop and large sink. Opposite the galley is a spacious sideboard with cupboards and an internal bottle rack. The sideboard can be configured with an icemaker, Villeroy & Boch crockery stowage and an illuminated glassware cupboard above.

Forward of the galley is a large, raised U-shaped dinette providing seating for up to eight with great views all around and in social proximity to the helm. The aft end of the seat has space for a 23-bottle wine chiller. On the portside dashtop, the large stowage unit can house a 40in TV.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The helm station with adjacent side door leading to the starboard midships cleat and bulwark gate allows for easy docking and circulation. The helm has space for two 12in Raymarine MFD screens and the Beneteau Ship Control system.

In addition, an aft docking camera, stern docking lights and the Cummins integrated joystick system can be specified. The helm dashtop, console and adjustable pilot seat are finished in dark grey.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The Swift Trawler 48 can easily sleep up to eight persons in three cabins on the lower deck and the saloon dinette, which easily converts into a double bed with wrap-around privacy curtains as standard.

On the lower deck, the forward owner’s cabin features a double berth that lifts to reveal stowage underneath. There are overhead lockers and wardrobes, large hull windows with inset portlights and an overhead hatch which offer natural light and ventilation. The en-suite bathroom includes a separate shower cubicle with teak-slatted seat.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The port guest cabin benefits from a large hull window with inset portlight, stowage, wardrobe and two single berths with an infill to make up a double berth. This cabin also features an en-suite door to the portside day head, which also features a separate shower cubicle with teak-slatted seat.

The starboard guest cabin has two portlights, a transverse double berth and a double door wardrobe that’s large enough to house an optional washer/dryer.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, flagship, series, 48, Andreani, 35, 41, Grand Trawler 62, MICAD

The standard joinery is teak, while oak is an option. In addition, the sideboard doors, owner and port cabin wardrobe doors can be specified with wood or crème slatted doors with inset panels.

The first version of the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) is designed to measure the environmental credentials of superyachts and rank them.

Water Revolution Foundation, YETI, 1.0, Yacht Environmental Transparency Index, environmental, credentials, Robert van Tol

YETI (Yacht Environmental Transparency Index)

The Amsterdam-based Water Revolution Foundation has launched the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), which is designed to reduce the ecological impact of the superyacht industry by scoring and comparing yachts based on their environmental credentials.

The index emphasises the operational efficiency of a yacht’s lifecycle and tackles ecological impact by benchmarking vessels against an average operational profile, enabling those within the superyacht industry to make more informed decisions for new builds and refit projects.

YETI 1.0 focuses on the most impactful part of a yacht’s lifecycle – its operational phase. By expressing the calculated emissions in EcoPoints and dividing such points with the yacht’s gross tonnage, YETI 1.0 determines a score that is relative and comparable within its class. Following regulations and engineering practices, the defined classes are Under 500GT, 500-3,000GT and Over 3,000GT.

To use YETI 1.0, data concerning a vessel’s general parameters, speed-power, load determination, generators, battery bank, and heat distribution system are submitted on an input sheet.

When joining the fleet review, yachts are provided with an extensive feedback report that includes a YETI 1.0 score, explanation of how the score was determined, comparison to the rest of the assessed fleet within a given class, and suggestions for potential areas of improvement.

By taking a yacht’s unique operational profile as a benchmark, YETI 1.0 provides scores comparing a single vessel to the rest of the fleet rather than applying the generic approach for commercial ships.

YETI scores are calculated based on energy use for propulsion, including expected fuel, shore-power consumption, and related emissions. Studies conducted as part of the project include the upstream impacts of fuels, engines and generators, and the average footprint of shore power in the most popular marinas.

Data for yachts can now be submitted to calculate its YETI score, which will come with a detailed feedback report providing a comparison with the rest of the fleet.

Robert van Tol, Executive Director of Water Revolution Foundation, said: “The groundwork has been done. It is now time for the industry and owners to utilise this reliable reference to know where a yacht stands and what opportunities there are to improve its environmental credentials.”

Workshops will be organised for industry members to attend a live YETI score calculation to better understand the required input, assessment process, and outcomes generated as a single score. This session will reveal how choices are rewarded and showcase how YETI is designed to help instead of judge.

Fernando Alonso was able to enjoy a Sunreef 80 Eco sailing yacht in Greece this summer, ahead of the delivery of his customised 60 Sunreef Power Eco.

Fernando Alonso was able to sample the ‘Sunreef Eco’ lifestyle as the Spanish Formula 1 star enjoyed a Sunreef 80 Eco sailing catamaran during his summer holiday in Mykonos. The world premiere of the Sunreef 80 Eco was held at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

Alonso, who won the Formula 1 World Championship in 2005 and 2006, commissioned an electric 60 Sunreef Power Eco last year. Under construction in Gdansk, Poland, the custom motor yacht will be equipped with electric engines and the shipyard’s patented photovoltaic system.

“Sunreef Yachts was an easy choice for me,” said Alonso, who has won 32 Grands Prix during his extensive racing career. “They combine luxury and sustainability like no other shipyard. When I visited their facility in Poland, I saw first-hand how all the details are taken care of. This is what luxury eco yachting should be about.”

While waiting for delivery, with his boat expected in 2023, he was able to enjoy a slice of sustainable yachting in Greece, as he tried out a Sunreef Eco sailing catamaran boasting the same silent performance and operation as his upcoming motor yacht.

“My life goes so fast. I travel a lot around the world,” said Alonso, who will drive for Aston Martin in the 2023 season. “Once on the track, it’s again all about speed. When I enjoy my time off, I want the exact opposite. I want to travel in total silence, with no fumes, no vibrations.”

In late September, Hong Seh Marine, Sunreef’s dealer in Singapore, hosted Alonso for a special evening (click to read article) as the Spaniard visited the city to compete in F1’s iconic race.

The Austrian-owned builder of solar-electric catamarans has expanded its portfolio with its first electric tender.

Silent-Yachts has launched the Silent Tender 400, which has an overall length of 4m (13ft) and features an electric drivetrain. Design cues from the Silent 60 and 80 solar-electric catamarans include the angular lines, rebated bulwark, and black-and-white finish.

A carbon-fibre lay-up ensures the hull of the sporty-looking tender weighs no more than 90kg, making it easier to lift out using the hydraulic bathing platform of a Silent 60, easier for the mother ship to carry and more efficient in terms of performance.

Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “We are very proud to present the new Silent Tender 400, which is one of the most efficient electric tenders on the market. It follows the same design principles as our award-winning electric yachts, with dimensions that enable it to fit both the Silent 60 series and Silent 80 series yachts. The hull gives passengers a really dry ride, even at speed and in confused seas.”

Designed to carry six people, the Silent Tender 400 was conceived for the Silent 60, although the model is available to anyone looking for an electric runabout or an efficient tender for a conventional yacht.

The tender has a central console and intuitive controls including a throttle, leather-padded wheel and a display showing speed, heading and depth. The driver’s seat is flanked by two other seats and there are two bow seats, all with handholds. Boarding is via a step in the lowered bulwarks midships.

Owners can choose between various inboard and outboard propulsion options. Inboard power comes via a 20kW electric waterjet, offering low draught and ease of handling. With the sportier outboard, input power is either 20kW or 30kW, depending on the package selected. The higher-rated motor can propel the boat over 20 knots.

The Silent Tender 400 fits either a standard 16kWh lithium battery or an upgraded 20kWh unit for more range, with a minimum of two hours’ drive time at 10 knots. Fast on-board charging can replenish the battery in just 2½ hours.

Silent-Yachts is also developing a 5.1m electric tender, designed to fit the garage of the Silent 80 seriesyachts.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Sun Hung Kai & Co. Around the Island Race, Hong Kong’s biggest annual sailing event, featured an impressive entry list of 224 boats from 14 classes including seven one-design classes, Sportsboats, HKPN, IRC, dinghies and beach catamarans.

It took two start lines set off Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Kellett Island Clubhouse and 24 consecutive starts to get the fleet away for the 26nm circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island, with 207 boats completing the race and over 50 volunteers helping out during the day.

The SHK Scallyway Fuku Orma 60 trimaran was the last starter at 11.10am, 10 minutes behind its smaller opponent, the Nigel Irens 40 trimaran, Carbon 3. The smallest boat competing in the race, the single-handed RS Aero 7 skippered by Stefan Lecher, headed off at 8.40am.

The youngest participant of the race was Danielle Law, just 2½ years old, who took part in her first Around the Island Race on boar Ding Dong with her five-year-old brother Sean and her father Dominic.

The day started in 8-10 knots of north-easterly breeze off the start line. The fleet made their way up the island side of the Hong Kong Harbour, avoiding exclusion zones for Hong Kong’s busy marine traffic and then made their way out through the Lei Yue Mun Gap. Kites were hoisted out of the Gap, where the fleet compressed as the wind lightened off to an easterly breeze of around six knots.

By Shek O and the approaches to Cape D’Aguilar, Nim Ye’s J92s Delight was in the lead with the breeze starting to pick up again to 10 knots. However, Rune Jacobsen’s J/80 Jamminsoon took over the lead, passing through the Stanley Gate at 12.40pm, with the 29ers right behind them.

In the meantime, things were also hotting up at the back of the fleet as SHK Scallywag Fuku powered up and started working her way through the armada of yachts, leading the fleet through the Cyberport Gate nine minutes later and the Sandy Bay club mark four minutes later by 12.53pm.

With the fleet under kite from Cape D’Aguilar experiencing consistent conditions, Race Officer David Norton confirmed the race would make the full circumnavigation with the finish off Kellett Island.

Spared the typical Cyberport park-up, the majority of the fleet had converged on Green Island by 3.00pm before they started the last challenging section of the course – negotiating the tricky beat through the harbour to the finish.

In what was to be a quick race for all, the David Witt-skippered SHK Scallyway Fuku took the fasted elapsed time of 2h 25m 21s, just short of the race record of 2h 13m 11s established by Aberdeen Extreme 40 in 2013.

The big winners of the day were Noel Chan’s TP52 Rampage 88, followed by another TP52 Phoenix owned by Robert Wiest/Victor Ku and David Ho and Patrick Pender’s VX One Serendipity.

For the HKPN division, Niccolo Manno’s Carbon 3 trimaran took the win, followed by Bridget Chan’s Ker 11.3 Minnie the Moocher and Raymond Yip’s Beneteau First 44.7 Harpseal in third place.

Race Officer David Norton was satisfied with the steady conditions. “Unlike the ‘feast and famine’ conditions that we see most years, the 2022 Around the Island Race had a consistent 8-12 knots around the whole course,” Norton said. “Great sailing conditions along the Lamma channel, with the only real soft spot around the Green Island mark.”

The outgoing tide helped most of the fleet through Lei Yue Mun, but the payback was a strong adverse current in the western harbour on the 3½ mile beat back from Green Island mark to the finish.

The British-owned luxury yacht builder has expanded its global network of dealers by appointing VP Yachts, headed by Vivian Chan.

Vivian Chan of VP Yachts and Iain Smallridge of Pearl

Pearl Yachts has reached an agreement with VP Yachts to represent the British brand in Hong Kong. Featuring exterior design by Bill Dixon and interiors by Kelly Hoppen, Pearl models include the 62, 80, flagship 95 and the new 72, which had its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of October.

VP Yachts was founded by Director Vivian Chan, who is also General Manager of the Sun Hing Shipyard, owned by her family.

Chan said: “The cultural bond we share is undeniable. The style of Pearl Yachts’ instantly recognisable flybridge motor yachts fits perfectly with the tastes in our local market, with British allure and a neutral, sober colour palette a winning proposal to our market.

VP Yachts is positioned to leverage generational connections in local yachting that go beyond even my lifetime involvement through the family business, so we are excited to see the heights we can reach together.”

Iain Smallridge, Managing Director of Pearl, added: “We always celebrate growth and new friends, especially in affluent and interesting markets, but to see our British brand now properly entering Hong Kong, uniting two seafaring cultures with shared history, is a source of special satisfaction.

VP Yachts have just what Pearl needs to succeed in a competitive market, with an educated, international approach to growth. Vivian heads a shipyard herself, so gives me full confidence that she understands not only her side but also ours, which is invaluable in this partnership.”
