Sylvie Ernoult, Director, Cannes Yachting Festival

A new feature of this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival is the in-water exhibition area for 8-12m boats in Vieux Port (‘Old Port’). How many boats do you expect in there?

We expect about 50 smaller boats from almost 30 brands including Canelli, Cormate, Hanse, Rand, Regal, Sea Ray, Nautic and White Shark. In addition, I’m happy to confirm that the brokerage section was fully booked as of the second week of August, which was at least three weeks earlier than for the past two editions.

Situated beside the sailing area in Port Canto, the brokerage and toys area will present interesting content including a lot of innovative water toys ashore and 48 brokerage yachts in the water including at least 10 big sailing boats.

Will Vieux Port again host a dedicated zone for electric boats?

Yes. Like last year, there will be a zone for electric and hybrid models, where we’re expecting around a dozen boats. This area is for smaller electric boats. However, over the past few years, there has been a steady increase in this sector, so you’ll see more and more shipyards presenting a hybrid or electric boat elsewhere at this year’s show.

Examples include four Eco models from Sunreef Yachts, comprising one 80ft powercat and three sailing models from 60-80ft, as well as a Silent 60, which is also fully powered by solar energy, while new Norwegian builder Ripple Boats will present a long-range electric boat.

What else can visitors look forward to at this year’s show?

Visitors will find lots of amazing boats, new innovative vessels and products with high design specs, as well as new players in the industry, so start-ups as well as major companies.

A couple of interesting boats to look out for include Bluegame’s hydrogen-powered chase boat being developed for America’s Cup entry American Magic, which is being presented at the show on land.

Meanwhile, Prestige is staging a world premiere of a new multihull motor yacht for a second successive year in the water at Vieux Port. Who would have expected these major brands and others to be so innovative?

Are you happy with the overall format introduced in 2019, to keep motor yachts in Vieux Port and move sailing boats to Port Canto by the brokerage and toys area?

Moving 120 sailing boats to Port Canto was discussed with our main clients, for both big and small boats, sailing and power. The product segmentation and logic for our visitors as well as the technical constraints sail boats required, such as deep water in the port, also influenced the final decision.

Four years on, we’re happy that this was a very good choice. Port Canto only contains a quarter of the overall total of boats exhibited at the show, but it presents specific segments and only big boats.

Sylvie Ernoult, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vieux Port, Port Canto, Canelli, Cormate, Hanse, Rand, Regal, Sea Ray, Nautic, White Shark, Sunreef, Silent 60, Prestige, Bluegame, America’s Cup, hydrogen, David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, Bay of Cannes, ‘old town’

Port Canto hosts the popular sailing area, as well as the brokerage superyachts and toys

We’re happy with the overall format for both the Vieux Port and Port Canto because of the quality and suitability of the content presented on each side, with visitors going from one to the other except for those who know exactly what they want to see and not see.

If we need to change again in the future, it’s possible, but what’s important is to maintain the quality and logic in the product segmentation presented, so visitors will still be curious and satisfied to go to the other area to see the variety they expect.

Are you happy with the overall attendance, which has been quite consistent for the last few years?

I’m not bothered by number consistency. What’s important is to increase audience quality, which is what we do. Quantity is organic and constantly increasing, so it’s not so important. In addition, we don’t want to have a show that’s too busy, so 50,000-60,000 quality visitors is a good figure for me.

Sylvie Ernoult, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vieux Port, Port Canto, Canelli, Cormate, Hanse, Rand, Regal, Sea Ray, Nautic, White Shark, Sunreef, Silent 60, Prestige, Bluegame, America’s Cup, hydrogen, David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, Bay of Cannes, ‘old town’

The main entrance to Vieux Port, the show’s largest venue and home to most motor yachts

What makes it Europe’s most important in-water boat show and for world premieres?

The Cannes Yachting Festival opens the nautical season. It’s an unmissable boat show. All the worldwide players in this industry who want to present their previews must attend. Our exhibitors have the guarantee of both meeting good-quality visitors – so buyers for their products – and journalists from all over the world who will promote their boat debuts worldwide.

The city of Cannes is clearly a highlight of the show as well, with its famous ‘Old Town’, five-star hotels, the Croisette and luxury boutiques. These represent many advantages. And not forgetting the Bay of Cannes, the Vieux Port and Port Canto, which provide an extraordinary setting for welcoming more than 700 boats.

The Italian Marine Industry Association (Confindustria Nautica) has announced that the 63rd Genoa International Boat Show from September 21-26 will offer 143 additional berths compared to last year due to the opening of new canals in the Waterfront di Levante redevelopment, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.

Marco Bucci, Mayor of Genoa, said: “For 63 years, the Genoa International Boat Show has stood by our city, helping it to become one of the true international yachting capitals. We’re building the future together, thanks to a great deal of synergy that exists between the public and private sectors that generates valuable results for the territory.

“This year, it will be held at the heart of the new Waterfront di Levante redevelopment project, the ambitious and imposing operation that will give back to all the citizens of Genoa the stunning sea view they deserve. A unique stage to welcome the very best of the yachting industry from all over the world, with a significant return of tourism for the city as well.”

The show will again feature over 1,000 boats from 2-40m including 184 new products, representing a 9.5 per cent increase on 2022, while the show will include the fourth edition of the Design Innovation Awards. The line-up of 1,043 brands is 4.5 per cent up since 2022.

Saverio Cecchi, President of the Italian Marine Industry Association, said: “This is an event that has always interpreted and represented the yachting industry, which continues to grow. Forecasts predict the sector’s turnover to exceed €7 billion and exports to generate record numbers.

“With the completion of the Waterfront redevelopment plan, of which we can already see the first important results this year, the boat show will become a truly global platform for business development across the sector and everything that revolves around it, a unique location in the world.”

Marina Stella, General Manager of Confindustria Nautica, said: “For the Italian Marine Industry Association, the Genoa International Boat Show is also an essential tool for industrial policy makers, a place to discuss strategic issues in view of the consolidation of our industry’s competitiveness and to project the sector towards a sustainable future.

“Thanks to the support of the Italian Trade Agency, the international invitation programme will bring to Genoa the most important operators from throughout the sector and specialised foreign press, who will be arriving from as many as 35 different countries, from all five continents.”

Fabio Ermetto, Baglietto’s CCO, said: We’d had our eyes on Asia for some time. We wanted to find a partner capable of developing and promoting our brand on a market that is considerably far and different from ours. Alvin Chua, from Monaco Yachts Asia, surely has the experience and expertise to help us achieve this important objective.”

Mandarin Oriental Residences and Paramount Miami World Centre are among key luxury residences to check out in South Florida.

Over the past decade, South Florida’s city skylines have soared to incredible heights. From Miami to Boca Raton, high-rise living is now some of the most sought-after in the area. We look at homes that provide their residents with the best views possible, the penthouses.

Paramount Miami

Paramount Miami offers luxury residential units. Image: Paramount Miami.

When you think of high-rise living in the United States, three areas come to mind: New York City, Chicago, and South Florida, but the area getting the most attention these days out of the three is the latter. As tech and finance companies relocate to the low-tax and highly tropical South Florida, real estate developers are building some showstopping homes to attract buyers. With limited waterfront houses, many of these new homes can be found in the glitzy condominium buildings along Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. After all, why move to Miami if you’re not going to have a view?

Home prices in South Florida have continued to surge since the start of the pandemic. For example, the median sales price for a condominium in Miami is USD 390,000. Although relatively low compared to major cities such as New York City, the median price a year ago was USD 325,000. That’s a significant 20 percent increase.

The price per square foot in South Florida’s high-end residences reached an all-time high in March 2022. It peaked at a whopping USD 1,325 per square foot as the region’s average. Comparatively, the average price per square foot just one year earlier was at a steady USD 945.

The recent interest rate increases haven’t affected the market as they traditionally would. A lack of supply and strong demand is continuing to keep prices high. This is evident as the record-setting price points of the region are not inhibiting the market’s buyers. In Q1 of this year, 394 South Florida luxury properties sold each month, as compared to 426 during April 2022.

At the top of the condominium market is the penthouse. Miami has some of the most luxurious penthouses on the market — and with killer views to match.

In the Brickell neighbourhood, a penthouse at the Four Seasons broke the record for the most expensive property sold there, when it was purchased for USD 15.9 million earlier this year. As the city continues to build up, we look at which penthouses buyers should have their eye on.

WHAT’S ON THE MARKET?

Paramount Miami Worldcenter — Miami

Paramount Miami

Spacious duplex living design, Paramount Miami. Image: Paramount Miami.

The second largest master-planned urban project in the US is happening right in the centre of Miami. The Paramount Miami Worldcenter, developed by Royal Palms Companies, is strategically situated in Downtown Miami and is located near some of the city’s primary attractions, including the Perez Art Museum Miami, Frost Museum of Science, Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Centre, and the American Airlines Arena, which is home to the Miami Heat basketball team.

The USD 3 billion project spans over 30 acres and includes entertainment, museums, shopping, sports venues, parks, a 365,000 sq ft convention centre, and mass transit. In addition to this, it also has one of the most sought-after new residential buildings being built in the city.

The new condominium tower will feature more than 500 homes and include some incredible amenities outside of your usual swimming pool and gym. This includes a Tai Chi deck, boxing studio, and the country’s first outdoor soccer field in a high-rise residential building.

While the apartments here have been going quickly, there is a penthouse that is still available. The creme de la creme of penthouses in the building is 5411 — L1 duplex. The penthouse features a private lift that takes you up to the five bedrooms, den, study, and six and a half bathrooms covering an expansive 6,513 sq ft of indoor space across two floors. There is also a combined 573 sq ft of outdoor space with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding city.

With a property like this, its lucky owner is more than equipped to entertain regularly. Fortunately, there is an open-plan layout so the kitchen and living room blend seamlessly.  There are also top-of-the-line kitchen appliances from Miele, which the owner’s personal chef will surely be grateful for. Guests who choose to spend the night will enjoy the large bedrooms with spectacular views, as well as bathrooms that feature rain showers and spa tubs.

“Demand and competition continue to run high in Miami’s ultra-luxury market, especially as buyers shift their attention to new condo developments that offer sophisticated at-home lifestyles and heightened safety standards. PARAMOUNT Miami Worldcenter provides residents with more amenities than any other building, with over 40 at their fingertips, including essentials like the food market an entire soccer field and a resort-style pool deck. Beyond the amenity package, we’re very proud of the individual residences. People spend more time in their homes than anywhere else, which is why we thoughtfully designed the layouts to support daily needs and efficiency. The PARAMOUNT penthouses offer a luxury lifestyle that takes this functionality to an entirely new level, with double-height ceilings, expansive outdoor living rooms and grand entertainment spaces.” – Daniel Kodsi, CEO of Royal Palm Companies

Located about 47 miles north of Miami is the upscale city of Boca Raton. Nestled within one of its nicest neighbourhoods is the Residences at Mandarin Oriental. This is one of the Hong Kong hotel group’s few exclusive condominium buildings that offer the luxury of a hotel, but the homeliness of a well-equipped apartment all year round.

The development features 89 stunning residences, 158 hotel keys, and a super luxury Penthouse Collection developed and designed by Penn-Florida Companies and SB Architects respectively. Buyers looking for a condominium in the area will be hard-pressed to find a more exclusive and luxurious property.

While the standard residences are plenty luxurious, those who want to take the high life to the next level should look no further than the penthouses here. One that’s currently on the market for sale is Penthouse 06, which is larger and more extravagant than many mega-mansions in the area.

CRN is working on M/Y 145, a 70m fully custom, steel and aluminium superyacht called Project Thunderball. Dutch studio Vripack developed the external lines and the naval architecture, while Italy’s Nauta Design handled the interior design and outdoor furniture.

Marnix J. Hoekstra, Vripack’s Co-Creative Director, said: “Equally cutting-edge naval architecture supports the outside aesthetic, and places this design atop our sizable portfolio of world-travelling ships, which have sailed the ocean since 1961. At every design meeting, our comprehensive approach gave the owner insight into the layouts, functions and performances, enabling quick, thoughtful and deliberate decision-making.”

The superyacht will cruise in the Mediterranean and between Florida and the Bahamas, and be used as a base for diving, sailing and underwater fishing. The owner is a passionate sailor, so a smaller sailing boat will also be delivered to accompany the mother yacht.

Project Thunderball features a traditional elongated bow, a low profile and svelte lines, with curved bilges and a smooth surface. The five-deck yacht has a beam of 11m, a volume of 1,100GT and accommodation for up to 12 guests and 15 crew.

CRN M/Y 145 continues the shipyard’s commitment to by implementing a peak shaving system to increase energy efficiency and slash fuel consumption.

Y.Co completed the sale of Project Thunderball in August 2022 and is acting as the owner’s representative and project management team, supporting the owner through the construction stage to the technical checks, inspection and acceptance as well as with the project management, the on-site supervision and coordinating the external contractors.

CRN’s current projects also include the 72m CRN M/Y 139, the 67m CRN M/Y 143 and the 85m CRN M/Y 144. Ferretti Group’s almost 80,000-sqm Superyacht Yard in Ancona is also building the first all-aluminium Custom Line Navetta 50, hull four of the all-aluminium Pershing 140 and the first all-aluminium Riva 54Metri.

The west side of the yard is dedicated to the production of Custom Line fibreglass range, with 27 yachts now under construction in the sheds and at the quays for finishing, testing and delivery to their owners and project teams.

The Italian superyacht builder has created the Class 44M, designed inside and out by Giorgio Maria Cassetta

Benetti has begun building the Class 44M, which succeeds the Diamond 44M and is based on the same hull. Like the Diamond 44M, whose first hull launched in 2020, the four-deck Class 44M features exterior styling by Giorgio Maria Cassetta, who also designed the interior of the new fibreglass model.

“We worked on an infinite number of details and, as a result, this boat’s interiors are new compared to what we’re used to seeing on a yacht this size,” Cassetta said. “All these details convey an appealing sense of elegance but also reveal the wonder of human skill and craftsmanship: Benetti Class 44M is an incredibly complex, sophisticated place, but one that has a truly amazing ability to welcome people.”

Designed for long, safe cruises around the world, lasting weeks or months, the Class 44M features generous stowage capacity and extensive use of sustainable materials such as FSC-certified wood, while a focus on ‘transparency’ is achieved by glazed surfaces that let light flood into all the decks.

The beach club is a versatile space, while the generously sized garage is located on the port side. On the main deck, the spacious lounge offers direct views of the water due to low-profile bulwarks. The galley and day head are midships, while forward is the full-beam master cabin, which includes an office space, generous wardrobe and full-beam bathroom.

The upper deck includes a large interior living space that extends outdoors towards the stern and can accommodate a dining table for 10, while there’s also the helm station and captain’s cabin forward. The sun deck provides over 102sqm of space for dining, sunbathing or socialising at the bar, or can be configured according to the owner’s preferences.

The lower deck has four double guest cabins and the crew quarters. Specially studied crew flow paths run the entire length of all four decks.

To reduce vibrations and improve soundproofing, floating floors and bulkheads are used throughout, along with flexible transmission couplings. The air-conditioning and purification system ensures high-efficiency air circulation with six changes per hour. Two 1,400hp MAN engines deliver a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,100nm at 11 knots.

Sebastiano Fanizza, CCO of Benetti, said: “We welcome a new yacht into the Class family. This model increases the choice we offer our owners, who expect elegant and innovative new yachts from Benetti. The new Benetti Class 44M flagship is a gem of a yacht from every perspective, vaunting a spacious layout and satisfying every owner’s desire for absolute comfort and wellbeing, which are increasingly at the core of every new yacht project.”

Sunseeker International will display its 100 Yacht at the 54th Southampton International Boat Show (September 15-24), where the superyacht will be the largest boat on display in Europe’s largest, purpose-built temporary marina.

Traditionally one of the biggest exhibitors at Mayflower Park, the Poole shipyard now expects to have 10 yachts at the UK’s biggest boat show. The 100 Yacht joins a provisional line-up announced in late July, while the Predator 75 has replaced the 75 Sport Yacht.

As well as the new flagships of the Yacht and Predator lines, Sunseeker’s line-up at the E060 stand includes the Southampton premiere of the Superhawk 55, which premiered at Boot Dusseldorf in January. The other seven yachts comprise the Manhattan 55, Predator 65, 65 Sport Yacht, Manhattan 68, 76 Yacht, 88 Yacht and 90 Ocean.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO of Sunseeker International, said the 100 Yacht (click for Review) will be the largest vessel Sunseeker has exhibited at the Southampton show for over two decades. “We’re thrilled to share the revolutionary 100 Yacht with visitors to the Southampton International Boat Show and to give them a taste of the true luxury that Sunseeker continues to provide,” Frabetti said.

“As a proud British boat builder, we couldn’t imagine a better place to exhibit the 100 Yacht. It’s an honour to be exhibiting the largest yacht at the show and we’re excited to showcase our continued commitment to an uncompromising approach to design and engineering excellence.

The world premiere of the 100 Yacht was held at last year’s edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, which this year will host a dark Midnight Grey version of the model. Powered by twin MTU 12V 2000 M96X or MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, the 100 Yacht reaches up to 30 knots and accommodates up to 12 guests and five crew.

Signature features including the owner’s stateroom forward on the main deck, which has access up to a private bow terrace. The yacht also has a single-level upper deck extending from the flybridge to the foredeck and generous Beach Club with X-Tend™ convertible seating.
