Massimiliano Casoni has joined Benetti as its General Manager, having begun his role on September 4. The Italian superyacht builder said Casoni has been tasked with supervising the management of Benetti, focusing on new product development and the rationalisation and efficiency of its Livorno and Viareggio shipyards, while ensuring the design and build quality of its products remain at the very highest market levels.

“I’m extremely pleased to seize this opportunity to lead a luxury brand like Benetti and look forward to getting down to work with my new colleagues, so we can pursue together the ambitious goal of consolidating our strengths and tackling the major challenges awaiting us in the coming years,” Casoni said.

After graduating in mechanical engineering from Bologna University in 1995, Casoni gained extensive experience at international industrial groups, including luxury brands, for over 20 years. After his first professional appointment in SCM group, he moved to Ferrari in 1999 and the following year joined Maserati, where he held management positions before becoming Production Manager in 2002.

From 2005 to 2015, he again worked in Ferrari, where his roles included Manufacturing Director and Gran Turismo Product Development Team Leader before becoming Production Processes Director in 2012. Casoni was later Chief Operating Officer at Technogym Group for eight years.

In his new role, Casoni will report to Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, who said: “We are pleased to welcome Massimiliano Casoni to our team. His expertise and experience working for world-class companies will prove extremely useful in generating added value for Benetti as the world’s leading superyacht builder.”

Azimut reveals partnerships to help reduce emissions

The Italian shipyard has partnered with multiple companies and organisations as it seeks to help the industry decarbonise.

Azimut’s Magellano 60 can use HVOlution biofuel

Azimut staged a press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival focused on its efforts to reduce environmental impact by lowering CO2 emissions.

The shipyard presented the results of its efforts, certified by an independent scientific panel, and the new goals to be pursued with its partners: the Politecnico di Torino, Eni Sustainable Mobility, Lloyd’s Register and Superyacht Eco Association, a non-profit organisation created by the Yacht Club de Monaco and Credit Suisse.

Milestones in Azimut’s green path include the first fuel cell tested on board, the first hybrid yacht and a fleet of Low Emission Yachts that emit up to 30 per cent less CO2 than comparable boats with shaft line propulsion.

Giovanna Vitelli, Chair of the Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “We don’t just wait for the solutions of the future, but we combine tomorrow-oriented research with today’s concrete answers, validating our research with the best scientific and certification bodies.”

Its approach involves the search for alternatives to fossil fuels, an activity conducted by the Group’s R&D department, which involves scouting and testing of solutions ranging from biodiesel to synthetic fuels.

The desire to evaluate which solution could be immediately applicable and effective with a scientific and objective method led the shipyard to contact the Energy Department of the Politecnico di Torino and Professor Massimo Santarelli, professor of Advanced Energy Systems at the Piedmont university and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

The Politecnico, drawing on the experience gained in the automotive and aviation sectors, conducted an independent, extensive study on alternative fuels for the pleasure boating industry. The study analyses HVO biodiesel, methanol and hydrogen, comparing their efficiency, safety, availability and costs in a short and medium-term horizon.

Presented by Professor Santarelli, the results highlighted the advantages of biodiesel compared to methanol and hydrogen. Green or synthetic methanol, the type effective in reducing CO2 emissions, is an option that cannot be implemented in the short term due to critical issues related to production and distribution, but could be promising in a longer term.

Gray methanol, on the other hand, has a higher life cycle footprint than traditional diesel. Hydrogen represents a distant alternative due to the complexities of storage and safe management on board.

“Today, biodiesel is the only viable alternative to fossil fuel and at the present the most effective to contribute to the decarbonization of the pleasure boat sector,” Professor Santarelli said.

HVO biodiesel is currently among the most mature solutions, ready for immediate and practical use, as adoption does not require significant changes to the storage or propulsion system.

The study by the Politecnico di Torino underlined the Group’s recent collaboration with Eni Sustainable Mobility, the Eni company dedicated to accelerating the path towards mobility carbon neutrality.

The agreement, announced in June, involves replacing the fuel used for sea trials, technical tests and transfers of prototypes and newly produced boats – approximately 700,000 litres in total per year – with HVOlution. The Eni biofuel is made from renewable* raw materials and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90 per cent compared to the reference fossil mix, depending on the specific raw materials used for its production**.

The R&D department of Azimut-Benetti Group was the first to extensively test the HVOlution biofuel for use in the nautical sector. Azimut also used biodiesel in specific laboratory tests of the new Magellano 60 which, during the summer, sailed in the Mediterranean powered by HVO.

The tests recorded a reduction in well-to-wake CO2 emissions of more than 80 per cent compared to a yacht of comparable size powered by fossil fuel.

Azimut-Benetti collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and SEA Index

After two decades of research to reduce CO2 emissions, the shipyard is observing significant growth in the relevance of emissions as a discriminating factor in the purchase of a yacht. This trend highlights the absence of standardised, transparent information that allows owners to collect, read and compare data and ratings, which are typically offered in the automotive and real estate industries.

Azimut, Giovana Vitelli, Politecnico di Torino, Eni Sustainable Mobility, Lloyd's Register, Superyacht Eco Association, Yacht Club de Monaco, Credit Suisse

CGI of Azimut Seadeck 9

The Group has started to collaborate with Lloyd’s Register and the Superyacht Eco Association, which through the SEA Index calculates the CO2 emissions of yachts from 25-100m and beyond. In September, Azimut became a corporate member of the SEA Index to support the association in the definition of an objective carbon emission index that permits comparison for yachts under 24m.

Azimut, together with Lloyd’s Register – one of the main classification bodies in the maritime sector – has realised a consumption and CO2 emissions certification plan in standard conditions.

Based on the tests carried out with Azimut yachts and a database integrated with the shipyard’s findings, Lloyd’s has developed a comparison index for the Superyacht Eco Association which expresses CO2 emissions in relation to the volume of the boat and the reference speed (g CO2/GT.NM), data held by all shipyards and easily detectable during a sea trial.

The index has essential criteria and can become a point of reference for producers, technicians and specialists in the sector.

Natalie Quévert, General Secretary of the Superyacht Eco Association, said: “SEA Index was created to mobilize the sector to undertake concrete interventions to reduce CO2 emissions. Thanks to the partnership with Azimut, SEA Index can also certify yachts under 24m, with the ambition of reaching a number of owners to start an unprecedented movement.”

Azimut has laid the foundations to create a new, more conscious phase of the nautical industry to reduce the environmental impact. It will progressively certify all new boats with the aim of making consumption and emissions data accessible for consultation.

The new ambassadors of the shipyard’s green route, the Seadeck 9 and the Grande 30M, are among the first models involved in the programme.

The Seadeck 9 has been announced as the third Seadeck model representing the first series of hybrid yachts for families and the most efficient ever created by Azimut, achieving a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 40 per cent, between navigation and time spent at anchor, compared to a traditional flybridge boat of similar size.

The Grande 30M, previewed during the press conference in Cannes, marks a new stage in the shipyard’s collaboration with ZF. This mode will be the first equipped with the new POD 4900, developed by Azimut in partnership with ZF.

Marco Valle, CEO of the Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “Less than one year ago, I announced the Group’s desire to involve the nautical world in the development of an objective index to compare consumption and emissions.

“Today, thanks to the collaboration with Lloyd’s and SEA Index, that tool exists. The Azimut yachts in Cannes are displayed with their key impact data, certified by a third party and shared with owners as well as the public.”

* Pursuant to EU Directive 2018/2001 “REDII”.

** According to the conventional criterion of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 “REDII”, the reduction in CO2eq emissions of the HVOlution along the logistics-production chain in 2022 was between 60% and 90%, compared to the mix reference fossil (i.e. 94g CO2eq/MJ), depending on the raw materials used for its production.

The Italian shipyard staged the world premiere of the SX100 at the Cannes Yachting Festival following a private preview on the eve of the show.

Sanlorenzo SX100

On the eve of this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, Sanlorenzo staged an evening press conference on the beach that included a preview of the SX100, which went on to debut at the six-day show alongside the BGM75 multihull motor yacht from sister brand Bluegame.

A 100-footer with a 25ft beam, the SX100 offers accommodation for eight guests and five crew. Four 800hp D13-IPS1050 engines produce a top speed of 23 knots, a cruising speed of 20 knots and an economical speed of 10 knots, which offers a range of 1,600nm.

As it did for the SX76, SX88 and SX112, the Zuccon International Project studio developed the concept and exterior lines of the SX100, while the interiors of the 211GT unit presented at Cannes were custom made to a design by Piero Lissoni.

Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project said: “The SX100 stems from the conviction that today the boat can be thought of as a versatile platform where large spaces can be made available.

“In a market where demands are multiple, diversified and multicultural, a design that offers an open stern that effectively represents a blank canvas – where the owner can interpret that space according to his needs and habits – is a great opportunity.”

The aft platform can carry a 5.65m tender and is flanked by two spacious side terraces that open onto the sea, before stairs lead to the aft cockpit on the main deck and the interior including a saloon with full-height windows.

The forward part of the main deck houses the owner’s suite, which combines mirrors and glass details with wood. The three guest cabins are located on the lower deck, while upper deck includes large windows sheltering the wheelhouse.

Features include two internal staircases connecting the three levels. The first, with its sculptural character, is made of chromed metal and joins lower deck with the main. The staircase connecting the main deck to the flybridge is in wood and is disguised behind a decorative screen.

Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, said: “The SX100 is another architectural design, an addition to the SX family with similar characteristics to its larger siblings – the stern opens up, there are interconnections between the decks – but it uses a different language. The proportions have changed.

“We’ve included some surprises, such as a staircase that becomes the heart of the whole project, a very important metal staircase, very naval in some ways but stark in others. An additional staircase becomes invisible: if you don’t go looking for it, it’s not there, but instead appears if you open some screens, and then the rooms reconnect as if it were an architectural duplex.”

Michael Peters handled naval architecture, with Camillo Garroni overseeing exterior and interior design

After the first Prestige cruiser debuted in 1989, the brand launched its first flybridge, the 36, in 2000, the same year it expanded its Les Herbiers production facility. A decade later, the Prestige 500 began its successful run and was succeeded in 2017 by the 520, another bestseller from the F-Line.

A world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the new F4 is the French shipyard’s bid to reinvent its popular F-Line of flybridge yachts with a 50ft model that stays true to the brand’s roots while updating its form and substance.

The F4 was a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival

For its latest flybridge yacht, Prestige turned to a tried and true team: Michael Peters Yacht Design, the US-based naval architectural studio, and Camillo Garroni of Italy’s Garroni Design for the layout and interiors. Does that sound international?

Add that the F4 is built in sturdy GRP infused into an opening mould and is constructed at the Prestige shipyard in Vendée on France’s west coast and you have the complete picture for a yacht built by a shipyard with a global outlook.

A signature fashion plate is a marker of new F-Line models

With an LOA of 49ft 10in and a near-15ft beam, the new Prestige F4 is neat and compact. Dark and curved glazed surfaces contrast with the white hull to break up the exterior lines, bringing dynamism and a sense of movement even when the boat is still.

OUTDOOR OFFERINGS

The F4 has a handy up-down swim platform with stairs that deploy when the platform is lowered, as well as locker storage for toys, while no flybridge yacht would be complete without a little something extra on top.

The flybridge has an L-shaped dinette aft and large sunbathing area forward

The flybridge is large and very enjoyable, with an L-shaped couch around an aft table and plenty of sunbathing space fore. Owners can choose between a hard top and a bimini cover for a space they may find themselves using from dawn to dusk – and even later, seeing that it has an outdoor kitchen complete with a sink, a mini fridge and a barbecue grill concealed in a cabinet.

The upper helm is surrounded by seating, so everyone can enjoy the boat when it’s running at its top speed of 28 knots or cruising along comfortably at 22 knots, powered by twin 480hp Volvo Penta D6- IPS650 inboard engines.

Back on the main deck, the aft cockpit is set up with the option of facing sofas either side of a foldable table on the centreline, a layout that enhances the feeling of connection with the sea because guests look out over the water instead of into the boat.

Prestige also offers the two sofas in an L-shape formation, again along with a folding table, while it’s also easy to keep the chilled drinks flowing thanks to an icemaker tucked under the port stairs to the flybridge.

The aft cockpit shown with two facing sofas either side of a foldable table

Garroni Design’s input included an ‘ocean view’ galley adjacent to the cockpit that blends interior spaces with the exterior.

Just open the home-style door to the saloon, fold up the galley window and hook it to its ceiling anchor and you have an indoor/outdoor space that makes entertaining while you cook simple and natural.

The galley and aft cockpit can be connected by opening the door and lifting the window

Furthermore, the option of synthetic teak flooring in the cockpit, as selected for hull one, signals the shipyard’s desire to shift towards innovative building materials to enhance environmental friendliness and ease of use.

QUIET LUXURY

Enter the saloon and you find a comfortable J-shaped couch to port and an opening table in a light, bright and contemporary space where every detail has been carefully planned. The ceiling, lined with suede-like Alcantara and accented by curved rope LED lighting, and focus point details like carved walnut cabinetry enhance a feeling of quiet luxury.

Forward view of the saloon, with décor inspired by the French Riviera

The helm position to starboard has wraparound views, 12-inch Garmin touchscreens and joystick commands. It’s a user-friendly arrangement that’s ideal for owner/drivers and family use.

From here, it’s just a couple of steps down to the master suite, set fore on a deck level that the shipyard calls ‘semi-main’. To create this private level, Peters widened the deep-V hull at the nose, creating enough volume for a king-size bed placed centrally in a full-beam cabin that boasts 2m of headroom.

Prestige, F-Line, F4, Camillo Garroni, Michael Peters, Clare Mahon

The well-lit master suite is in the bow and located on a ‘semi-main’ deck

The materials are classic, like the bed’s rattan headboard, and the cabin gets plenty of natural light through three skylights. Owners can enjoy the views coming in through long hull windows with opening portholes for natural air circulation. The en-suite bathroom to port has luxury touches like twin sinks and there’s plenty of storage space.

There’s a handy washer/dryer tucked into a cabinet in the lobby between the two guest cabins, which each have forward-facing beds. To starboard, the VIP has a convertible double bed while the slightly narrower port cabin has twin beds, a suitably flexible configuration for a family or group of friends.

Prestige, F-Line, F4, Camillo Garroni, Michael Peters, Clare Mahon

The starboard guest cabin has a convertible double bed

Special attention was paid to vibration and soundproofing the engine room, even though the IPS engines are well known for their smooth and quiet ride. The end result? At top speed in the master suite, you hear water rushing by more than you hear the engines. That may well be the largest luxury aboard a boat where living well is always a top consideration.

With a set-up created to accommodate how people want to enjoy time on the water today combined with an added touch of refinement and the best and most efficient technology available, the Prestige F4 opens a new chapter in this shipyard’s book of successful flybridge yachts. More than just a tweak or an update, the F4 is a rethink that’s bound to find some eager takers.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

MOTOR YACHTS: UK, FRANCE

Sunseeker kicked off the year with the world premieres of the Superhawk 55 and 75 Sport Yacht at Boot, where the former’s unveiling was one of the highlights of the show. After staging the US debut of the Superhawk 55 at the Miami International Boat Show, the Poole shipyard is showing the Superhawk at Cannes, Southampton and Genoa, with the Sport Yacht flagship exhibiting at Cannes and Genoa.

The Superhawk 55 is one of the builder’s most exciting new models for years, rekindling the dynamic Superhawk brand but bringing it into a very modern setting by offering an all-action day boat with flexible cockpit and foredeck areas, along with a lower deck that has a saloon, galley and two cabins, allowing for extended cruises.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Sunseeker 75 Sport Yacht

The 75 Sport Yacht had a low-key premiere at Boot, so Sunseeker is excited about the in-water appearance of this extensive upgrade of the 74 Sport Yacht and big sister of the much-lauded 65 Sport Yacht.

Sunseeker hosts its third world premiere of the year at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 25-29), where it will unveil the Ocean 182, the enclosed version of the 90 Ocean model that ushered in the brand’s big-beam, high-volume series. Selected media were invited for a sea trial in August before the yacht crossed the Atlantic.

Princess Y95

Princess is debuting the all-new Y80 at Cannes along with the Y95, which join the Y72 and Y85 in the Y Class of large flybridge motor yachts. The Y95 is effectively the open-flybridge version of the X95 and had a private, appointment-only preview in Plymouth last December. The hull on show at Cannes is set to head to Southeast Asia through regional dealer Boat Lagoon Yachting.

The Y80 offers three cockpit layout options, curved sofas in the saloon, a flexible foredeck, four en-suite guest cabins and two crew cabins, plus twin 1,900hp MAN V12 engines expected to produce a top speed over 30 knots.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Fairline Squadron 58

Fairline is staging the world premiere of its much-anticipated Squadron 58 at the Southampton International Boat Show (September 15-24) as it reveals the first sub-80ft motor yacht by a British builder to feature drop-down sides on both sides of the cockpit.

Fitting between the 50 and flagship 68 in the Squadron series of flybridge yachts, the 58 is also distinguished by an extendable swim platform, modular seating in the infinity cockpit, a flybridge packed with seating and sunbathing areas, three guest cabins, and either a twin cabin or day area with head in the stern.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Prestige M8

Prestige, part of France’s Groupe Beneteau, has taken its new M-Line of multihulls to the next level with the M8 (click for Review), which has its world premiere at Cannes. This 65-footer with a 29ft beam offers vast social areas, from the open-plan cockpit and the multi-level foredeck up to the vast flybridge and inside to an airy interior including a full-beam owner’s suite forward.

The French builder’s global debuts at Cannes also include the F4 (REVIEW, Issue 73), an all-new 50ft model that kicks off a new-look F-Line flybridge series, which currently includes the 420, 460, 520, 590 and 690.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Prestige F4

Featuring exterior and interior design by Camillo Garroni and naval architecture by Michael Peters, the F4 features a high-low swim platform, infinity cockpit with facing sofas and a forward master suite with an aft-facing bed set on what the builder calls the ‘semi-main deck’.

Sister brand Jeanneau is expanding its new DB Yachts series of day boats, revealing the DB/37 at this year’s Boot following the debut of the DB/43 at Cannes last year. The smaller sister also appears at Cannes – with her big sister – and Grand Pavois La Rochelle (September 20-25) on France’s west coast in September. There are no huge surprises in the DB/37, except how it offers much of what the DB/43 does but in a shorter package.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Jeanneau DB/37

At Cannes, Jeanneau revealed Serie2 versions of its Merry Fisher 895 Serie2 and Cap Camarat 9.0 WA Serie2, which both benefit from a series of upgrades. Designed by Jeanneau with Centkowski & Denert, the third-biggest Merry Fisher – whose updates include from a modernised, flexible foredeck – will also be on display at the Barcelona International Boat Show (October 11-15).

Meanwhile, the Cap Camarat 9.0 WA Serie2 is designed by Patrice Sarrazin and features a new 8m hull by Michael Peters. It will show at La Rochelle and Barcelona before making its US debut at Fort Lauderdale at the end of October.

Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Prestige, Jeanneau, Beneteau

Beneteau Antares 12

Beneteau unveiled the all-new Antares 12 at Cannes before staging its American premiere at Fort Lauderdale. Featuring an overall length of 42ft 7in and a beam of 12ft 5in, the new series flagship is 10ft longer than the Antares 11 and 11 Fly, and fitted with Mercury Verado outboards, either twin 400hp V10s or triple 300hp V8s.

Highlights include a drop-down bulwark on the cockpit’s starboard side, a comprehensive flybridge with C-shaped dinette, upper helm and companion seating, a saloon dinette that can be converted to a double bed, and two or three cabins below.

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach Retells A Story of Seminyak

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach Retells A Story of Seminyak

Exuberantly authentic to its locale in Seminyak, Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach is a five-star experience in all things Balinese.

Arguably, a stay selection can alter the course of any holiday. This hypothesis is one that Bali-goers are all too familiar with. Frequent flyers to the island typically oscillate between three neighbourhoods: the secluded haven of Ubud, busy indie Canggu and the standard, prime beachfront properties of Seminyak. While the former two locations have risen in popularity for an alternative taste of the island, Seminyak’s status has endured for its vicinity to the Bali mainstays like beach clubs and prime dining destinations. Choosing between different variations of milieux would mean narrowing one’s intended holiday outcomes, a task of weighing different pleasures which has proved difficult time and again.

To cope, many often select between extremes: between the island’s cultures of serenity and partying. Others attempt to cram the full spectrum through exhausting itineraries, leaving little time to be spent enjoying the facilities offered in Bali’s many luxurious accommodations. Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach offers a reprieve in the form of a well-balanced compromise. On entering its grounds — conveniently located in the heart of Seminyak — a Bali-native Pohon Pule tree greets guests. A sacred tree, the centrepiece branches toward the sky, directing gazes toward the ample sunlight let in by the lobby’s open-ceiling concept. This greeting is no gimmick. While many other neighbouring properties have emphasised an alignment with gentrified, commercialised modernity, the first Hotel Indigo in a resort location chooses to lead with a Seminyak-forward narrative.

Expertly, Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach weaves elements of spirituality and heritage into its architecture, interiors and overarching hospitality ethos. Its emphasis on local influence reverberates across the hotel’s layout, informed by proportions of traditional pavilions and constructed using heritage materials and patterns. In nearly every feature within the 4.8-hectare property, guests will find some iteration of Hotel Indigo’s commitment to the Seminyak way. Beyond just the to-be-expected daybeds, all 270 rooms on the property enjoy bathrooms crafted in the image of modern spas, tiled with Balinese fabric-inspired floral motifs. On a more luxuriant note, 19 private villas are available, fashioned to include private pools and whirlpools catering to both sun-seeking travellers and parties who have touched down to decompress.

The Hotel Indigo chain operates on a philosophy of drawing inspiration from the environment it has settled in. This is immediately apparent upon laying eyes on the property. Yet, what Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach excels at is its undercurrent of environment-influenced hospitality. Brimming with intricacies that justify the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG)’s continued legacy in the industry, the hotel is rigorous in exalting the Balinese people’s signature cordiality. Complimentary stocked mini-bars pale in comparison to its 24-hour amenities: namely, an extensive in-room dining service and a Health Club fitted with wellness programmes and equipment to give even the most exclusive of gyms a run for their money. The star of Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, however, is the vast culinary and beverage ventures led by hospitality veteran Jonathan Byrne.

As any hotel aficionado would know, the finishing touch of any stay is the perfect meal to wrap it all up. Byrne spearheads eight wining and dining concepts, each offering a distinctive carte du jour. Especially notable is SugarSand, now revitalised to architecturally render a Japanese take on jukungs, or Balinese boats.

The Japanese izakaya concept is contemporary, yet still maintains the intended Seminyak spirit. Local ingredients shape up an eclectic menu that comprises wagyu gyozas, katsu sandwiches and a fine selection of sushi which foreground a heavy-hitting cocktail menu crafted by what the team terms as “Balixologists”. A delightful ending note to round out any stay, the dining concepts are reflective of the careful precision with which Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach executes its own version of IHG hospitality.

A destination in its own right, Hotel Indigo Seminyak Beach functions as an all-in-one — a temptation to idly squander one’s time within the boundless estate and unending displays of Balinese cordiality. Again organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the latest Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup offered competitors “sun, big waves and big breeze”.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Since the early 1980s, maxi yacht owners and sailors have been drawn to the Costa Smeralda and specifically the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Considered the perfect sailing package, the event unites first-class organization, a majestic sailing environment and the world’s leading maxi yachts and professional crews.

Rolex and event organiser the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) have enjoyed a close partnership for nearly 40 years. The longevity of this collaboration has been at the heart of the event’s continued success and evolution. Support for the organization of the week-long regatta is provided by the International Maxi Association (IMA).

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The 2023 edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be considered a special vintage. Four days of racing offered the full repertoire of the Costa Smeralda sailing experience, from the strong breeze, big waves and robust sea state of the regatta’s initial exchanges to the light, unstable conditions which closed proceedings.

The Maddalena Archipelago’s myriad of race courses feature numerous narrow passages and rocky outcrops. On such testing fields of play, sailing powerful yachts at high speeds requires total synergy in teamwork and deft boat handling skills.

Sailors, drawn from the cream of professional sailing talent, were left enthralled by the week’s competition. Former Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Mike Sanderson, part of the afterguard on Bella Mente, was one such example.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

“The location is so special,” Sanderson said. “Sun, big waves and big breeze. For so many teams this is the pinnacle event of their year. We have worked all year to develop the boat to be ready for this regatta.”

For Mitch Booth, two-time Olympic medallist, overall Rolex Middle Sea Race winning skipper in 2021 and tactician on Leopard 3, the event is without equal: “Coming together in such an iconic place, it is a real season highlight and a clash of the titans, the best against the best in perfect sailing.”

Accolades went to the six class winners who showed great consistency and expertise in dealing both with the vagaries of the conditions but equally the formidable nature of the opposition. Proving triumphant were: Galateia (Maxi Class A), Bella Mente (Class B), Spirit of Lorina (Class C), Y3K (Supermaxi), Svea (J Class) and Allegra (Maxi multihull).

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Since its foundation, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has been the showcase for the evolution in maxi yacht design and technology. The 48-strong fleet at this year’s 33rd edition was one of the most eclectic to date. From the largest entrant, Svea (43.6m/143ft), through to the smallest, Blue Oyster (18.3m/60ft), an eye-catching range of yachts were on display.

Innovations for the 2023 edition included the first ever appearance of the maxi multihulls. As YCCS Commodore Michael Illbruck explains, this aligns with the event’s perennial commitment to be at the forefront of developments.

“Change is a constant in the world of yachting, and continuous evolution has been the key to the success of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, right from the first edition in 1980 up to the present day,” Illbruck said.

“The inclusion of multihulls fits perfectly with this perspective, a natural development of an event that has always been characterized by cutting-edge technology. Opening up to other categories allows owners to continue to pursue their passion and may inspire others to do so.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The oldest competing yachts included the J Class Velsheda and the recently restored Baruna, both dating back to the 1930s. Thomas Bscher’s Baltic 68 Open Season proved a highlight among the newer launches and one which symbolises a movement within sailing design to consider even more closely the environmental impact across all aspects of boat building and performance.

Creating fair and exciting competition across such a diverse fleet requires significant race management organization, one the event has long been renowned for. The rating system and division of classes is constructed with this in mind and to provide owners and sailors with the platform to pursue their passion for the sport.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

On the water, one of the closest divisions was the eight strong Maxi B group where American yachts Bella Mente and Proteus broke away to contest the title.

Going into what proved to be the regatta’s final race, they were tied on points. Bella Mente finished first to cap an impressive week on the water which saw the stellar crew, predominantly together for the past decade, claim two bullets and three second places.

Delight for owner Hap Fauth: “We come every year and it is the pinnacle of our season. This is our fourth victory in 11 years and the hardest fought.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Even closer was the Supermaxi competition. Only three points separated the top three yachts – Moat, Inoui and eventual winner Y3K, the recently launched Wally 101.

It marked a return to Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup success for owner Claus-Peter Offen: “I have been racing here for 25 years. For us it is the highlight of the regatta season. This is where we want to be thanks to the beauty of the area and of the yacht club.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

For the class winners, crowned at the final prizegiving, victory at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is reward for overcoming world-class competition, an intense and challenging racing programme and having prepared in peak form for the pinnacle event in the maxi yacht calendar. The overriding sentiment was an appreciation for an event which always delivers on excellence.

With Europe’s autumn boat show season and Fort Lauderdale in late October marking the prime period for world premieres, Yacht Style highlights many of the year’s most exciting new models by the world’s leading luxury yacht builders.

The following article is the first chapter of New Models 2023 from Issue 73 (click to read/download)

MOTOR YACHTS: ITALY

It’s another exciting year for Ferretti Group, which is hosting two of the most exciting world premieres at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 12-17): Pershing’s series-opening GTX116, also set to display at the Monaco Yacht Show (September 27-30), and Riva’s 82’ Diva, which goes on to exhibit at the Genoa International Boat Show (September 21-26).

Pershing produces the GTX116 at its Mondolfo facility on Italy’s east coast then trucks the yachts 30km up the coast to Fano for launching. Hull one, Caffeine, splashed in February before attending the Monaco Grand Prix in May, while hull two was launched in July, showing off a similar grey hull and blue deckhouse.

Pershing GTX116

Designed with the Fulvio De Simoni studio, the GTX116 is arguably the builder’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 and takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector. The 35m motor yacht has a 7.7m beam and a triple waterjet system with the option of three 1,800hp or 2,000hp MAN V12s, the latter providing a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots.

Outdoor areas include a multi-level beach club with an electrohydraulic taffrail, a 40sqm flybridge and a foredeck with the option of a six-person jacuzzi. The main deck features outdoor and indoor dining areas separated by a roomy saloon, while the lower deck offers a full-beam master suite and four guest cabins.

Riva 82’ Diva

The new 82’ Diva is produced at Riva’s La Spezia facility on Italy’s west coast, which builds the brand’s 76-130ft models including its fellow Flybridge models: 90’ Argo, 102’ Corsaro Super, 110’ Dolcevita and 130’ Bellissima, all by Officina Italiana Design.

The 82’ Diva is the first Riva to feature drop-down bulwarks either side of the swim platform and they expand the yacht’s beam from 20ft to 30ft. Other highlights for the Flybridge range’s new entry model include a garage for a 3.45m jet tender and a 40sqm flybridge, which Riva has described as one of the largest for this size of yacht and is about the same size as the fly on the Pershing GTX116.

Diva owners can choose twin 1,800hp MAN V12s or upgrade to 1,900hp versions, which produce a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots.

Wally wallwhy150

Wally’s new wallywhy150 debuted at this year’s Venice Boat Show and is scheduled to exhibit at both Cannes and Monaco. Following the concept of the 89ft, 200GT wallywhy200, which debuted at Cannes in 2021, the wallywhy150 offers 150GT of interior volume on a 79ft yacht and can reach 23 knots with three IPS1350 engines.

Wally’s other premiere this year was the wallypower58x, with the outboard version of the wallypower58 debuting at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in Florida and topping 50 knots with four 600hp Mercury Verado V12 outboard engines.

Ferretti Yachts 580

Ferretti Yachts started the year by debuting its 580 at the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show, as the builder continues refreshing its Flybridge series with exterior designs by Filippo Salvetti and interiors by IdeaeItalia, offering Classic or Contemporary decors.

The model features an aft galley and a raised saloon with sofas on both sides, three double guest cabins below, and twin 900mhp or 1,000mhp Volvo Penta engines.

Azimut Magellano 60

Azimut’s new models include the Magellano 60, a world premiere at Cannes and set to show at Genoa. It’s notable for being the brand’s first model to be fuelled by HVOlution – a brand of hydrogenated vegetable oil by Eni Sustainable Mobility – as it cruised from Savona to Taormina for the brand’s annual Yachting Gala event for owners this summer.

The Magellano 60 is the new entry model for a range that includes the upgraded Magellano 66, Magellano 25M and flagship Magellano 30M, with the new 66 and 30M launched last year. Magellano 60 features include an infinity cockpit, aft galley and a forward saloon with a starboard dining area offering spectacular views through full-height windows.

Azimut Verve 48

Azimut is also debuting the Verve 48 at Cannes. An upgrade of the Verve 47, the Verve 48 reveals new developments by Azimut and Francesco Struglia, who designed the interiors and exteriors. The stern area is completely new, larger and integrated with two ladders to easily get into the water, while the yacht features a drop-down bulwark on the port side.

The Verve 48 also reveals a new hard top that’s available with an opening tempered glass insert, which reduces weight and lets in light and air, even at anchor. Powered by three 600hp Mercury V12s, the Verve 48 can reach up to 50 knots, while fuel consumption during cruising speeds has been reduced by 15 per cent and noise has been reduced by up to 10 decibels compared to the Verve 47.

Azimut S7

Azimut’s first premiere of the year was the S7, which was unveiled at Boot and has its in-water premiere at Cannes. Complementing the S6, S8 and S10 in the sportbridge range, the 71-footer can reach 35 knots with three 800hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1050 engines.

Featuring exterior design by regular Azimut collaborator Alberto Mancini, the S7 features an extended sport fly with dining and lounging areas and a wet bar, while the garage can house a custom version of the Pirelli J33 tender and a jet-ski.

However, the S7 is arguably more notable for being the brand’s first model to feature interior design by Yachtique, which focused on colour shades ranging from cream to almond to dark brown. The main wood is pale Dove grey, while flamed Canaletto walnut is used to finish the furnishings.

CGI of Sanlorenzo SX100

Sanlorenzo has filled out its iconic SX ‘crossover’ series with the SX100, which is a world premiere at Cannes and joins the SX76, SX88 and SX112. A new hull is expected to be delivered to Southeast Asia in April 2024, having been sold shortly after the model’s announcement at last year’s Cannes show.

Sanlorenzo’s premieres also include the 57Steel, scheduled to debut at Monaco and notable for its vast volume of 1,050GT, more than double that of the 52Steel.

Yacht Style, New Models, Azimut, Bluegame, Sanlorenzo, Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Wally, Absolute, Invictus

CGI of Bluegame BGM75

Sister brand Bluegame is staging the premiere of its much-anticipated BGM75 multihull motor yacht at Cannes, which combines naval architecture by Philippe Briand, exterior design by Bernardo Zuccon and an interior by Sanlorenzo Art Director Piero Lissoni. The yacht will show at Genoa and Monaco later in the month.

Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute’s new model for 2023 is the 52 Fly, which premiered at this year’s Miami International Boat Show and is among the builder’s strong line-up at Cannes.

In line with Absolute’s new generation of flybridge yachts led by the 60 Fly and the 56 Fly, the 52 Fly also has infinity aft decks and modular furniture in both the cockpit and flybridge, as well as opening saloon windows, while the lower deck includes a full-beam master cabin in the bow, two doubles midships, and a versatile crew cabin. It also offers the option of solar panels on the hard top.

Invictus TT420

Meanwhile, Invictus is showing the TT420 at Cannes following the model’s unveiling at Boot. The model helps fill out a Christian Grande-designed series that includes the TT280, TT280S and T460, and offers many of the flagship’s best features in a 12.3m model.

Asia Yachting Group, a leading regional dealer founded and led by Olivier Besson, is partnering with BlackOrange, a boutique superyacht brokerage firm headed by Greg Gheraia. Asia Yachting’s new yacht portfolio includes Prestige, Fountaine Pajot and Nautique, while BlackOrange focuses on 30m-plus superyachts and remains a standalone brand within Asia Yachting Group.

Besson, Asia Yachting’s CEO, said: “BlackOrange is a dynamic independent company with a superyacht sales and charter business that, when partnering with Asia Yachting, will allow us to accelerate our strategic growth plans.”

The acquisition supplements Asia Yachting’s specialisation in luxury yacht dealership, brokerage, management and after-sales service in Asia with BlackOrange’s positioning as a renowned global boutique superyacht brokerage firm.

Both Asia Yachting and BlackOrange have had strong years to date. Asia Yachting has nearly 150 active listings in the luxury yacht sector and has brokered over 15 pre-owned yachts so far this year including 888, a 38m Azimut Grande Trideck delivered in early 2023.

Over the last 10 months, BlackOrange has achieved 10 superyacht sales including the 56m Benetti Lady Candy. It has also brokered other sales and been appointed to market megayachts such as a 155m Lürssen and a 90m Lürssen.

Gheraia, Director of BlackOrange, said: “This partnership will make us even stronger and more effective in ensuring our clients’ best interests. Join us at the upcoming yacht shows in Cannes and Monaco to witness the first wave of our exciting new developments.”

The Ferretti Yachts 860 features an exterior by Filippo Salvetti

A new Ferretti Yachts 860 was one of the most high-profile Asia premieres at this year’s Singapore Yachting Festival, as it shone alongside Ferretti Yachts 500 and 780 models at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

Among several high-profile Ferretti Group models to arrive in Asia this year – including the region’s first wallywhy200, wallypower58 and Riva 76’ Perseo Super – the Ferretti Yachts 860 was a true head turner at the four-day event.

However, it was just a first stop in Southeast Asia for the 88ft flybridge motor yacht, as it then moved on to its new home in Phuket, having been sold before its arrival by dealer V Yachts Asia, which last year hosted the Thailand premiere of the Ferretti Yachts 500 in Pattaya.

Like Ferretti Yachts’ flagship 1000, the 860 features an infinity cockpit with a glass parapet

Built alongside the brand’s biggest yachts from the 780 upwards in Ferretti Group’s Cattolica shipyard on Italy’s east coast, the 860 is Ferretti Yachts’ third-biggest model behind the 920 and the flagship1000, a model that has been delivered to Taiwan and mainland China over the past year or so.

A world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival and successor to the 850, the Ferretti Yachts 860 is also among the brand’s new wave of models featuring the option of Classic or Contemporary interiors by IdeaeItalia, also seen on the 500, 1000, upgraded 780 and new 580 that debuted this year.

The Ferretti Yachts 860 offers a high-low swim platform

The 860 also features a sleek, powerful silhouette by architect Filippo Salvetti, who has worked on the exterior of these recent models as well as earlier designs like the 670 and 720, all in collaboration with Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

As such, apart from the 920, the Italian has drawn all of Ferretti Yachts’ current Flybridge models and also collaborated with IdeaeItalia on the brand’s new Infynito 90.

With an overall length of 88ft 5in and a beam of 20ft 5in, the Ferretti Yachts 860 is just an inch shorter than the Infynito 90 but is 3ft 8in slimmer, following the Flybridge series’ classic lines and impressive performance while also remaining a CE-certified recreational craft due to a sub-24m load-line length.

The huge garage can fit a jet-ski and a 3.95m tender

Its standard engines are twin 1,800mph MAN V12 engines, which give a cruising speed of 24 knots and a top speed of 28. However, the first 860 in Asia features the upgraded option of 2,000mph MAN V12s, for a cruising speed of 27 knots and a top speed of 32, impressive for an 80-tonne yacht.

INFINITY OUTLOOK

While the yacht’s smooth lines are inviting, the aft cockpit and beach club are even more so. Like the flagship 1000, the 860 features an infinity cockpit with a glass parapet for greater views. The yacht also has a remarkably large garage with space for both a Williams SportJet 395 tender and a two-seat jetski, which can be launched directly into the water by lowering the swim platform.

The starboard side deck leads past an opening door by the dining area

Reached by two symmetrical stairways either side of the garage door, the cockpit is set up with two long sofas facing each other and ensuring all guests enjoy sea views. The sofas flank a huge, almost square central table that can seat eight people for alfresco dining with the addition of foldable director chairs, plus there’s a bar to port, another way of keeping guests entertained in this sheltered area.

Side decks lead to the foredeck, an attractive zone featuring an oversize, forward-facing sofa incorporating a central armrest and built-in  glass holders. Forward is a teak coffee table and a C-shaped sofa bed featuring reclining backrests and headrests, while a sunshade supported by carbon posts can be erected when needed.

The foredeck offers a four-sided seating area

The cockpit’s starboard stairs lead to a vast flybridge offering 44sqm (474sqft) of social space, starting with a clear aft area that can be furnished with freestanding furniture such as sunbeds or even a jacuzzi, made available for the first time on a Ferretti Yachts model.

Forward to port is an L-shaped dinette that can seat up to eight people, while further forward is a large double sunpad sheltered by the low windscreen. To starboard is the twin-seat helm station, while behind it is a large, two-piece multi-functional outdoor galley that can be accompanied by bar stools.

The flybridge features a dinette and sunbeds to port, a huge bar and helm to starboard, plus a clear area aft (not pictured)

The forward part of the flybridge is covered by a black-and-white hard top, which is available with fixed glass, an opening glass sunroof or with shading blades.

INTERIOR SOPHISTICATION

Back in the cockpit, the door to the saloon can be fully opened, either electrically or manually, and leads guests to an interior featuring Art Deco-inspired curves and a sophisticated decor – or choice of decors.

Interior photos show IdeaeItalia’s Classic mood, as selected for the first hull in Asia

The hull in Thailand features IdeaeItalia’s Classic mood, characterised by darker, warmer colours and striking contrasts, as evident in the throw pillows seen everywhere from the outdoor areas to the saloon and cabins. The Contemporary option presents paler, cooler colours characterised by tone-on tone shades through to total white.

The saloon is immediately notable for its magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows and features adjoining sofas to starboard that combine to offer an L-shaped seating area, while there’s plenty more space for loose chairs. To port is a low-set counter and a 75-inch TV.

The saloon features full-height windows and a sliding door by the dining area

Forward, a large dining table can seat eight people, while to starboard a sliding door offers great views and ventilation for guests, as well as direct access to the side deck.

The hallway leads past the lower-deck staircase to a day head on the port side. To starboard is a comprehensive galley, which can be enclosed or open and includes a ceramic hob, microwave/oven, 302-litre fridge and 117-litre freezer, as well as a side deck door.

The hallway leads further forward and up a couple of steps to an elegantly finished, semi-raised pilothouse featuring Poltrona Frau pilot chairs. Onboard technology includes a Seakeeper stabiliser on the Thailand hull, while fin stabilisers and Xenta’s X-AID joystick docking system are among options.

Deliberately set apart from the guest areas by a sliding door, the pilothouse has a dinette to port that can be used as a chart table or for crew dining, while forward is private access to a pair of twin-bunk crew cabins with private bathrooms.

Owners and guests reach their rooms by another Ferretti Yachts first, a helical staircase, which is port side of the dining table and presents a beautifully crafted passage down to the four en-suite guest cabins.

The full-beam owner’s cabin is midships and features a large, twin-sink bathroom and ample storage including a walk-in wardrobe, while it also benefits from innovative acoustic insulation solutions. To port is a twin cabin with forward-facing beds, while to starboard are two double cabins with inward-facing beds including a full-beam VIP suite forward.

Salvetti and IdeaeItalia have found their groove with Ferretti Yachts and the 860 is another fine example of a classic yet contemporary flybridge motor yacht, highlighted by novel features that show a brand always looking ahead.
