KPS Capital Partners, LP, a US-based private equity firm, is acquiring a controlling equity interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Limited, with existing shareholders retaining ownership in the company. The British luxury yacht builder stated that completion of the transaction is expected in the first quarter and is subject to customary closing conditions and approvals.

The Plymouth-based shipyard also said the new investment will help support expansion plans it announced last year as part of the successful bid by Plymouth City Council to create a Freeport in the region.

Antony Sheriff, CEO of Princess Yachts, said: “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.

“With a current order book nearing a record US$1 billion and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position. Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation.

“Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

Ryan Harrison, a Partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, added: “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range, and a worldwide reputation for quality and innovation.

“KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, CEO Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team, and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Aquila is staging the global debut of its 42 Yacht at this year’s Miami International Boat Show (February 15-19) as part of a six-powercat display including a 28 Molokai, 32 Sport, 36 Sport, 44 Yacht and 54 Yacht.

Alain Raas, Aquila’s Brand Manager, said: “Whether it be fishing, entertaining or cruising, there’s an Aquila to suit every need, globally. We invite visitors to stop by the Aquila display to meet with our qualified team of sales professionals to learn why Aquila is the No. 1 power catamaran manufacturer in the world.”

VPLP designed the Aquila 42 Yacht

Designed by French studio VPLP, the Aquila 42 Yacht has an overall length of 41ft 6in and a 21ft beam, so is 3ft 5in shorter and 6in thinner than the hugely popular 44 Yacht. The 42 Yacht can be powered by either two 230hp or 300hp Volvo Penta D4 inboard engines.

The aft cockpit features a wide sofa and a table, and a bar connected to the open aft galley, like on the 44 Yacht, while the saloon is forward and features a C-shaped sofa to starboard.

The flybridge has extensive seating

Starboard stairs from the cockpit lead to the flybridge, which has a central bench-seat helm station ahead of a wet bar, plus a huge L-shaped sofa that runs along the aft and port sides. Iconic Aquila features include a central walkway from the flybridge to the foredeck.

The 42 Yacht offers two, three or four cabins, but not the option of a full-beam master suite as offered on the 44 Yacht. The standard configuration includes an owner’s suite occupying most of the port hull, a lengthways VIP in the starboard hull, and a ‘utility cabin’ forward.

The latter can include be expanded to include a double bed and en-suite bathroom in the three-cabin option, while the four-cabin option includes two cabins sharing a bathroom in the port hull.

Jean Raas, Managing Director of Sino Eagle USA, said: “The all-new Aquila 42 Yacht ticks off all boxes that Aquila and VPLP Design were looking to achieve on a smaller model. The aft cockpit area provides an exceptional entertainment area with best-in-class water and dock access. The expansive flybridge has plenty of seating for everyone to take in the view while underway or at a favourite anchorage.

The StellarEXP32 in the ‘M’ version

StellarPM, which builds in Vietnam and China, has introduced a series of explorer power catamarans to its new-build offerings, starting with the StellarEXP32 and StellarEXP37 models, each superyacht offered in two configurations.

Both standard models are tri-deck designs and feature naval architecture by Dutch studio Ginton Naval Architects. The StellarEXP32 model has a length of 32.14m (105ft), a beam of 11.6m (38ft) and a draft of 2.1m (6ft 8in), while the StellarEXP37 has a length of 37.14m (121ft 10in), a beam of 12.58m (41ft 3in) and draft of 2.29m (7ft 6in).

The StellarEXP32-M has a long upper deck

Each is offered in two configurations, with ‘M’ boasting an extended, strengthened upper deck to accommodate tender stowage, and ‘S’ featuring a shorter upper deck to allow for a very large tender on the aft main deck – the StellarEXP37-S can accommodate a 12.5m tender.

In a standard configuration, both models have five guest cabins and three crew cabins. And both are fitted with two 750hp CAT C18 ACERT Tier 3 engines for a top speed of 14 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 3,400nm at ‘low cruise’ speed.

The StellarEXP37-M has a length of 122ft

The StellarPM yard in Haiphong, Vietnam’s third-largest city, handles the construction of hulls and superstructures, assembly and finishing, while the modular interiors are constructed at the builder’s factory in Zhuhai in China’s Guangdong province. StellarPM is offering a 20-month delivery time for StellarEXP models from signing of a construction agreement.

Chris Holmes, principal and founder of StellarPM, said: “It has been our dream to offer safe, substantial explorer yachts to the market and the StellarEXP series is a culmination of our long history of yacht building, yard managing and yacht renewing.

The StellarEXP37-M has a beam of 41ft

“The power catamaran hull delivers superb fuel efficiency and maximum stability. For those that use their yachts to venture further afield into more remote locations, the storage on board and redundant systems on all critical machinery combined with a Northern European superyacht quality interior offers the reassurance and comfort that long periods at sea require.”

Sailability’s MoHan completes gruelling Four Peaks Race

Enrico Zanella provides a first-hand account of Sailability Hong Kong’s Solaris Four Peaks Race debut aboard the Solaris 40, MoHan.

Sailability, MoHan, Four Peaks Race, Solaris, Enrico Zanella

At 12.44pm on Sunday, 5 February, Sailability Hong Kong’s MoHan crossed the finish line of the 2023 Solaris Four Peaks Race, organised by Aberdeen Boat Club.

It was tough, even in the first bay, Ma On Shan, where our runners needed to kayak for over 3km before tackling the 6km-plus climb to the first peak. South of Lamma island, we experienced waves of several meters for about 20 miles, plus cold and drizzle for a few hours.

Sailability, MoHan, Four Peaks Race, Solaris, Enrico Zanella

But the team were absolutely fantastic. I had never sailed with them before the race. I intentionally let Ar Tai, skipper of MoHan – who was unable to participate in the regatta – and Fred, a Sailability volunteer who I promoted to co-skipper for the regatta, take care of organisational aspects and training for the event, while I supervised everything from afar. In addition to being co-skipper, Fred is a very strong runner and ran the two toughest peaks.

There was also our helmsman Wai, very good upwind, Sylvia on the jib, Puk on the mainsail, and Ok handling sheets and winches. They didn’t let go of trimming the sails for a minute.

As for the runners, John and Fung had to struggle as counterweights in very important and difficult stages. Sunny Boy and CK had the role of ‘while you’re there’, one of the key roles because it helps everyone. David helped Fred manage the boat’s manoeuvres. Kay was our fantastic steward and delighted us with various delicacies prepared personally.

Sailability, MoHan, Four Peaks Race, Solaris, Enrico Zanella

At 10.50am on Saturday morning, we started upwind into Tai Tam Bay in two groups, with four IRC boats and seven boats together in HKPN Division A and B. We set sails with the (smaller) reefed mainsail in 15 knots of wind waiting to get out of the bay to see what the situation was like; over 20 knots were forecast.

In reality, it was 15-18 knots, so we decided to fully open the mainsail, passing an imaginary line between Kau Pei Chau rocks and Sung Kong island. We sailed upwind to the TCS2 buoy and then further up, passing Steep island, west of the Trio islands, Ping Min Chau rock, Shelter island and up to Port Shelter to land at Tui Hoi Tsuen for the tough first peak, Ma On Shan.

In the first bay, Port Shelter, most of the teams launched the runners aboard the kayaks more than 2km from landfall, due to the total lack of wind; normally it would have been 50-100m from the coast. Fred and CK ran 12.75km to climb and descend the 650m of the Ma On Shan Peak in a 2hr 38min round trip including the kayaking.

We remained floating in almost no wind for over an hour and then a line of wind arrived in the distance. Taking advantage of the bavette and the current, we brought ourselves within this line and waited for our heroes to reach us after more than 3 kilometres of kayaking. Finally, we were able to set off again in the late afternoon with more than 17 knots of wind downwind towards the second bay, Repulse Bay, to climb Violet Peak.

On the outward stretch, all upwind from Port Shelter, I underestimated the current from the east and we were trapped near Trio Island by 1.8 knots of current, which made us suffer a lot for reach and pass east of East Ninepin Island. At that point, we entered the wind line in reaching and we all got back to enjoying MoHan’s journey, having to work a lot on the setting, before arriving in Repulse Bay late at night.

Despite the very strong temptation to open the gennaker that I had hoisted passing Ninepin Island, I decided to live up to our stated intention of wanting to finish the regatta in absolute safety and with the aim of learning to compete together in an inclusive way. So, we kept our foot away from the accelerator and went downhill with the wind pushing the mainsail and jib.

In Repulse Bay, there were continuous gusts up to 13 knots and we decided to drop anchor a couple of hundred metres from land for the race to Violet Peak. David and Fung, who runs with a prosthetic, paddled to the start point where our heroes ran the 5.5km to climb and descend the 405m of Violet Peak in a 1hr 56min round trip.

We remained at anchor with the mainsail hoisted, constantly checking it when the gusts arrived, which alternated with long periods of almost absolute calm. Upon their return at around 1am, we set sail without any effort, with other gusts up to 13 knots, opening the jib as soon as possible. Still reaching, we began the long navigation towards Lantau for the third peak.

Just past Round Island, we entered the 17-knot wind range with gusts up to 25 knots along the south coast of Lamma Island, where for a few miles the waves reached more than a few metres in height. We arrived in Cheung Sha Wan Bay around 12.30am at night after a furious but extremely enjoyable ride which required the full attention of all involved in the safe operation of the boat.

We lowered the sails and sat at anchor waiting for Fred and CK to kayak the 2km round trip and the 10.5km to climb and descend the 995m summit of Lantau Peak in a 2hr 20min round trip.

We set sail again at dawn with overcast skies and about 10 knots abeam to Shek Kwu Chao Island and then upwind with a maximum of 15 knots of wind, high waves and contrary current up to Lamma island’s Ha Mei Wan Bay and the landing place in Lo So Shing beach.

We suffered a lot at the edge and inside the bay from constant wind shifts, up to almost 180 degrees, which required a lot of effort from Sylvia, Puk, Ok and Wai. Finally, we arrived near the beach. Our heroes, John, who is hearing impaired, and Sunny Boy paddled the 200m to the beach, together with CK who brought the kayak back on board.

We set sail again to the meeting point, on the other side of the island, at Mo Tat Wan. There was variable wind mainly downwind until the exit of the bay and then upwind with over 16 knots with gusts over 20 and waves and contrary current.

Sailability, MoHan, Four Peaks Race, Solaris, Enrico Zanella

We reached the meeting point downwind and stayed with the mainsail waiting for CK to paddle to the wharf where John and Sunny Boy embarked. It took them exactly 2hrs to ascend and descend the 6km to the 390m-high Mt Stenhouse, kayaking to shore and back.

At 11.50am we set sail again towards the southeast to pass Chesterman Gate and then turned northeast towards the finish line near Round Island, between there and the Aberdeen Boat Club Committee Boat, which masterfully organised and managed the entire event. We also thank the volunteers who gave assistance and carried out checks on land, on shore, along the route, at the summit and an orange buoy placed to the west of the boat itself.

At 12.44pm on the Sunday, we heard the horn, the signal that the race was over for us. We screamed, rejoiced, messed around and hugged each other, all super happy and proud to have fulfilled our dream, an inclusive Sailability team participating in a challenge only dreamed of before.

We sailed for 18 hours and 24 minutes and kayaked and ran the mountains – climbing a total of 2,440m – for 7 hours and 38 minutes. Thanks to MoHan and her comforts, we were all well, happy and protected.

Thanks to Mike, Silvio and Marco, who we took with us, with the dedication to them at the top of MoHan’s mast.

Thanks to the Commodore of the Aberdeen Boat Club and his highly trained and very helpful team.

Thanks to all the participants who we will invite from now until the next race in 2024.

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this wonderful challenging event possible.

The ILIAD 53S will debut at the 2023 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

ILIAD Catamarans will stage the global premiere of its new ILIAD 53S at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show from May 25-28. Signalling a departure from the flybridge design that distinguishes the ILIAD 50, 62 and 75, the 53S features a sporty sedan silhouette and a comprehensively optioned model is priced from US$1.795 million.

The interior includes a huge forward lounge, helm station, dining for six to eight people, and a large skylight that increases the natural light. The galley has an island bench, full-size refrigerator and freezer, and well-designed storage areas.

The master suite occupies an entire hull and features an oversized island queen bed, panoramic windows, expansive en-suite, and “more storage and space than any other boat in its class”, according to ILIAD. The two en-suite guest cabins also enjoy an abundance of natural light courtesy of the generous windows.

The 53S is a departure from ILIAD’S usual flybridge designs

The aft cockpit features a bar area and dining for up to 10 guests, barbecue, ice-maker and refrigerator, with all waste bins concealed in cleverly designed cabinetry. The tender platform is ideal for safe sea access and can be used for sunbathing when the tender is deployed.

The foredeck features generous lounge seating for enjoying a drink at sunset and has direct access into the saloon. Handrails around the entire main deck increase safety while moving around the boat.

The 53S set for Sanctuary Cove is powered by 440hp engines delivering a top speed of 24 knots and a 3,000nm-plus range at low speeds. Engine options from 400-550hp are also available.

The standard model is comprehensively optioned with air-conditioning, generator, full electronics, water maker, washer/dryer, lithium batteries, solar panels, entertainment system and much more.

The ILIAD 53S has been constructed with all the brand’s DNA, including being beachable in emergencies, a full vinylester hull, foam core throughout, high bridgedeck clearance and premium safety features that see this new model classified in a class of its own.

The Ocean 156 has a volume of 156GT

The Ocean 156 follows the single-helm, skylounge design introduced on the Ocean 182, which will debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 7-12) and is the enclosed flybridge version of the 90 Ocean that debuted in 2021 as one of ‘Sunseeker’s Famous Five’ models.

The skylounge contains the sole helm station

However, the Ocean 156 is an all-new model, without a ‘standard flybridge’ sister ship, and is purpose-designed as an enclosed skylounge model.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO of Sunseeker International, said: “Our teams have once again managed to achieve a luxury superyacht feel with all the practicalities of a smaller model on board the beautiful new Ocean 156. We’ve really worked hard to maximise space on board and the design options are endless. We’re really excited to bring what promises to be a popular model to market.”

CRN’s aluminium-hulled MY/141 is now in the Caribbean following a trip across the Atlantic to the US Virgin Islands. Launched last September, the 60.3m superyacht completed sea trials before delivery to her owners in December, then left the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona on Italy’s east coast.

Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard designed the exterior and interior of the 1,114GT yacht, while CRN handled naval architecture. The five-deck yacht has a beam of 10.55m and accommodates up to 12 guests and 13 crew.

Featuring twin MTU engines and certified IMO Tier III, the 198-footer has a remarkable top speed of over 25 knots and can cruise at 22.5 knots.

“The knowledgeable owners were eager for a high-performance superyacht with a shallow-enough draft to cruise in the West Indies, using in-line propellers. They also requested airy, generous-height spaces, and large guest and crew areas” CRN stated. “Her performance is genuinely remarkable for a displacement pleasure vessel in this market segment.”

M/Y 141 was one of three launches by CRN in 2022 (click for article), following the 52m Ciao and 62m Rio (click for Review), which both had world premieres at the Monaco Yacht Show last September.
