Founded in 1973 and part of the AkzoNobel family, the world-renowned Awlgrip® brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary with activities throughout the year.

AkzoNobel is marking the 50th anniversary of its world-renowned Awlgrip® brand with activities throughout the year to celebrate how it has become synonymous for unrivalled quality and performance with an amazing high-gloss finish among professionals and boat owners worldwide.

Awlgrip originated out of an Aerospace coating, Alumigrip, in 1973. The evolution of Awlgrip has been defined by a restless spirit of innovation to meet the changing boat-building technologies, repair and application processes, being ahead of regulatory changes, and to deliver an extensive colour palette that meet consumer demand and expectations.

Jemma Lampkin, Global Commercial Director at AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, concludes: “Trusted for over five decades, Awlgrip can rightfully lay claim to being the world’s leading professional yacht paint. To reach this milestone is a real testament to the dedication, professionalism and passion of all applicators and boatyards who have devotedly applied Awlgrip products on boats of all sizes and helped shape the brand over the last 50 years.

“As a result, we wanted to take a moment to highlight these achievements and pay tribute to all those who have made and continue to make Awlgrip what it is today and tomorrow. We are excited to showcase all the passion that Awlgrip applicators, boatyards, and owners share when they look at the boat with that amazing finish that Awlgrip continues to deliver.”

Awlgrip HDT

A dedicated webpage on Awlgrip.com (click here) charts the history of the brand and unearths the fascinating hidden stories behind its evolution. One story reveals that the product was initially conceived to be spelled ‘Allgrip’, but a transcribing accident saw it referred to as Awlgrip, with the name sticking.

Over the five decades since its inception, the Awlgrip range has expanded to encompass finishes, primers, fillers and varnishes, becoming a world-class brand that can be found in almost every port and country around the globe. Its market presence is reinforced by industry-leading sales and technical teams that educate and support applicators, builders and boaters the world over.

Its superlative finish, against which all other yacht coatings are measured, has seen it earn the truly unique accolade of becoming a verb with proud customers referring to having their boats “Awlgripped”.

Activity around the celebrations will include amplification of technical and customer support across our social media and digital channels, with promotional activity at key fall boat shows such as Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in Australia, Monaco Yacht Show, METSTRADE in the Netherlands and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in the US.

It will also highlight the years of innovation that have delivered game-changing products, including the industry-leading finish Awlgrip Topcoat, Awlwood, Awlfair Spray Filler, Awlgrip HDT and the new Awlcraft 3000 topcoat, alongside testimonials from leading industry figures.

These include Tim Oenbrink, General Manager of Merritt Supply, who tells the story of selling the first can of Awlgrip topcoat with a custom yellow colour for the sport fish boat Fighting Lady, and how Merritt Supply and Awlgrip work together to provide premium products and support to applicators.

“AkzoNobel’s YPAC training centre has been and continues to be of real benefit to us as a business,” Oenbrink says. “As well as countless customers, we send every single one of our sales employees there to learn.”

Joe Mains, another key industry figure and founder of Gold Coast Marine, says: “We’ve had a great experience with Awlgrip. When you first start out as a business owner, you want to surround yourself with manufacturers and products that you rely on. Awlgrip has been there for us for 38 years and helped us become what we are today.”

The Pearl 82 can reach 33 knots with twin 2,000hp MAN V12s

Pearl Yachts, represented in Hong Kong by Vivian Chan of VP Yachts, is developing the Pearl 82, with the first hull scheduled to launch in 2024. The 25.3m flybridge motor yacht with a 6.3m beam features an exterior by Dixon Yacht Design and an interior by renowned design house Kelly Hoppen Interiors, with both studios behind all current Pearl models.

The Pearl 82 continues an upgrade of the British brand’s range that began with the debut of the Pearl 62 in 2020 and the Pearl 72 that premiered at last October’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show before its European debut at Boot Dusseldorf this January.

The 25.3 motor yacht has a raised pilothouse

Iain Smallridge, Managing Director of Pearl Yachts, said: “We are extremely proud to be announcing our third new project in recent years, and it is a particularly optimistic occasion because the first two models, the Pearl 62 and Pearl 72, have been so well received.

“The Pearl 82 applies our core principles of designing yachts that offer our customers more while maintaining style and sophistication. She is the most compact superyacht on the market, offering numerous features previously not available in its sector of the market.”

The garage can house a Williams SportJet 345 and a jet-ski

The Pearl 82 can be powered by twin 1,650hp, 1,900hp or 2,000hp MAN V12 engines, the latter providing a top speed of 33 knots. As with all Pearl Yachts, the Pearl 82 comes with a comprehensive five-year warranty.

Superyacht-style features include a main-deck master suite plus four guest cabins on the lower deck, three crew cabins, a raised pilot house, and foredeck access from the flybridge and master suite.

The bulwarks fold down on both sides of the cockpit (Riviera-option)

Features include fold-down wings at cockpit level, a change from the builder’s flagship Pearl 95, where the wings are either side of the swim platform. The Pearl 82’s garage offers space for a tender up to a Williams SportJet 345 as well as a jet-ski and other water toys.

The aft deck can be outfitted with Riviera or Veranda arrangements to match owners’ lifestyles. The Riviera layout features aft-facing sun pads behind the table and sofa set-up, while the Veranda layout allows the seating to pivot between picnic and private patio orientations, always with the sea in sight.

The foredeck can be accessed from the main-deck master suite

Bill Dixon of Dixon Yacht Design said: “As with every Pearl design, the challenge is to pursue a class-leading, feature-led design. The design had to retain the defining features of a Pearl while balancing a sporty profile with large interior volumes and extensive hull, superstructure and roof glazing. Without a doubt, the Pearl 82 is a stand-out design in the 80ft market.”

A private terrace in the forepeak is accessible from the master suite and from the flybridge, with a dedicated opening to port midships. The foredeck lounge is just a few steps up and has sunpads and a sofa around a cocktail table, and can be covered by a bimini.

The master suite forward on the main deck

The flybridge features a full-sized dining table, multi-functional wet bar and a sun pad and hot tub combo, while freestanding furniture can also be specified. Shelter from the hard top can be adjusted with ‘full shade’, ‘adjustable louvres’ and ‘full sun’ settings.

Inside, the saloon has floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy views aided by cut-outs in the bulwarks. A forward dining table for 10 guests sits before an eye-catching bar. The galley is accessed to port and the master suite entry is on the starboard side. Engine-room access, galley access and foredeck access are all positioned on the port side of the yacht, ensuring privacy for guests and crew.

Kelly Hoppen Interiors has adapted the three exclusive Pearl Yachts styles, Indulgence, Luxury and Modern, for the new Pearl 82.

Kelly Hoppen CBE said: “There’s that moment when you arrive on a yacht, when you anticipate how you’re going to feel. What I wanted was a place that could be anywhere. It could be on land or at sea. It could be New York, it could be Paris, it could be London. It doesn’t matter, and you feel that you are just floating, which is exactly what you are.

The Pearl 82 features expansive glazing

We’ve used beautiful materials, and the joinery and the detailing are absolutely intricate, but the feel of when you are on board is quite open plan, with these wonderfully enlarged windows, which make you feel that you are really out at sea, rather than being enclosed inside of a yacht.”

Ferretti Group has launched the “ideal model” for an American owner who had “spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami”.

The first Pershing GTX116 leaves the Mondolfo facility

Ferretti Group has staged the launch of the first Pershing GTX116 for an American owner who has named the yacht Caffeine in honour of the ingredient that made his fortune. The yacht is painted a new shade of grey, with a special shade of blue for the deckhouse.

“I spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami, but could never find one. Now, my ideal model is finally a reality thanks to the Pershing GTX116,” the owner said.

The GTX116 is transported 30km up Italy’s east coast to Fano

“Five suites, a sunroof on the upper deck, a huge Jacuzzi, plenty of space for the crew, a large garage for tenders, and the best silver paintwork of all time. It has not only beauty and comfort but also the quality and safety that only a Pershing can provide.”

The 35m motor yacht with a 7.7m beam was built in
Ferretti Group’s Mondolfo facility on the east of Italy but 3km inland. The 116-footer was then put on a truck and transported to Fano, 30km up the coast, and will now undergo final outfitting and sea trials before heading to the US.

Fulvio De Simoni designed the 35m motor yacht

A design collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and its Engineering Department, the GTX116 is arguably the brand’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 and takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector.

Featuring a sleek, streamlined profile, the first GTX116 boasts the sporty power Pershing is renowned for, with a triple waterjet system 2,000hp MAN V12s plus waterjets providing hull one with a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots. The standard engines are three 1,800hp MAN V12 units.

As it provides both speed and space, the GTX116 has also been described as a ‘a performance SUV’.The yacht provides guests with 150sqm (1,615sqft) of outdoor areas. These include a 39sqm, teak-decked beach club protected by an electro-hydraulic taffrail that opens to connect the beach area with the swim platform, creating a huge space at the water’s edge.

The 40sqm sundeck, reached by two symmetrical outdoor stairways, has the upper helm station, generous spaces for socialising including a lounge area and large wet bar, plus a carbon hard top. There’s also a large Jacuzzi on the foredeck.

Asia Yachting has been appointed as the exclusive Hong Kong dealer for Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, in addition to its representation of Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts in the city. The increased scope means Asia Yachting is now representing all Fountaine Pajot sailing and power catamaran models in both Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Olivier Besson, founder and CEO of Asia Yachting, said: “We’re stoked about this expansion of partnership with Fountaine Pajot. The catamaran trend is just starting in Asia and we can foresee that it will keep on growing. The space and comfort a multihull yacht can offer are attracting more and more yacht lovers’ attention and demand.”

Asia Yachting’s first order of a Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran is a Tanna 47 set to arrive in the summer followed by an Alegria 67 later in the year. A redesign of the Saona 47, the Tanna 47 has more space including a 40 per cent larger flybridge of 75sqft that can entertain up to 10 guests at a time, a reconfigured, U-shape galley with increased storage, and the option of 5-9sqm of solar panels.

Kevin Corfa, Head of Fountaine Pajot Asia, said: “The Fountaine Pajot team feels very positive about this strengthening of our partnership with Asia Yachting. The increasing sales of our Motor Yachts range in Hong Kong in the past years has proven Asia Yachting has the right clientele and knowledge, so we’re confident this strategic expansion will be positive for both companies.”

The larger Ferretti Yachts models are built in Cattolica

CATTOLICA: LARGE FERRETTI YACHTS

From Mondolfo, it’s just a half-hour drive up the coast to Cattolica, a popular seaside resort town with a long beach lined with hotels. In contrast to Ancona and Mondolfo, the Cattolica site is dedicated to just one brand, Ferretti Yachts, although Custom Line models were built here in the past.

It’s Ferretti Group’s smallest production facility and set about 100m inland in the main town, surrounded by houses.

As such, following the completion of each Ferretti Yachts boat, local authorities need to clear and close two adjoining roads, so each boat can be wheeled along the streets and down to a Ferretti Yachts-branded travel-lift at the local marina. The company has a sales office at the marina and typically occupies several berths in front of the office for testing and sea trials.

Streets must be closed for yachts to be wheeled to sea

Opened in 2001, the 12,000sqm site has one large 7,000sqm building that includes offices and one large, well-lit production shed that includes a woodwork area and 16 assembly stations for the Ferretti Yachts 780, 860, 920 and flagship 1000, the biggest yacht that can be built in the facility.

The production layout is based on an island construction model, where each workstation is independent, and a completed boat can be moved out without disrupting the other stations. In January 2022, a fire broke out that affected three yachts, yet within three weeks, the facility was fully operational and staged its first launch of the year at the beginning of February.

About 300 staff and sub-contractors work onsite, and Ferretti Yachts sales staff say the site is working at full capacity to keep up with orders, which include at least a dozen sales for the 30m flagship, which debuted at the 2021 Venice Boat Show.

The nearby marina has a Ferretti Yachts sales office

The brand’s orders are split about 55 per cent in EMEA, 35 per cent in Americas and 10 per cent in Asia-Pacific. It’s worth noting that three of the first eight hulls of the FY1000 were sold to Asia: two to Taiwan and a customised version for mainland China.

FORLI: WALLY, HQ, MOULDS AND MORE

From Cattolica, it’s a 45-minute drive northwest to Forlì, which is 30km inland and 30 minutes away from the picturesque town of Cesenatico, where completed boats are delivered for testing and sea trials.

Forlì hosts the Ferretti Group headquarters and home of Wally

The 52,000sqm inland site in Forlì is home to the Ferretti Group headquarters, a production plant for the smaller Ferretti Yachts models (500, 580, 670 and 720) and Itama 62RS, the Group’s Plug & Mould Plant, a testing pool, paint halls and new Wally facilities currently producing the Wallytender and Wallypower models.

Upon entering, the Forlì site is dominated by a very large glass office building on the right, which houses the technical team, while across the car park is the company headquarters, which houses the Group’s engineering, purchasing, finance and administration teams.

Forli produces Ferretti Yachts 500-720 models, Itama 62RS, Wallypower and Wallytender

The 5,000sqm Plug & Mould Plant is one of the hidden keys to Ferretti Group’s ongoing success. Opened in 2006, its work shortens the lead time for new products and allows the Group to keep presenting an average of five to six new fibreglass models each year.

The plant, which has about 150 employees and sub-contractors onsite, develops all the tooling and hull moulds for each of the Group’s GRP models, constructs big GRP components and includes a CNC machine, 3D printing and a painting hall.

Ferretti Group’s remarkable Plug & Mould Plant

Recent hull moulds include the Wallywind110 sailing yacht with naval architecture by German studio Judel/Vrolijk, although both the Wallywind110 and custom Wally 101 – launching this year – are being built nearby by external companies.

The Plug & Mould Plant is a wondrous world for visitors, who can see and hear about future models before they’ve been announced. We found out about the Wallywhy100 well before it was publicised in December and found out about other new models like the 122ft … to be continued.

Ferretti Group acquired a neighbouring site to build the Wally facilities and in 2019 opened the first shed, which today has production lines for the Wallytender48 and Wallytender43. Each model is available with inboard engines or in an X version with outboards, a popular choice in the US market.

The multi-purpose Forli site also has painting halls

After hulls arrive from the sub-contractor, it takes about 50 days and 60 days to complete a Wallytender43 and Wallytender48 respectively, followed by about 20 days in dock in Cesenatico.

The neighbouring shed for the Wallypower58 opened in 2021 and both halls can operate with their front ‘doors’ completely open, offering ventilation and a view of the surrounding farmland. Wally motor yachts are offered in a variety of different colours including the popular gunmetal, other greys, silvers, greens and blues. Plans for the Wally site include a showroom and an office building.

SARNICO: RIVA’S HISTORIC HOME

From Forli, it’s a 300km, 3hr-plus drive northwest inland to the historic Riva shipyard at the southern end of Lake Iseo, set 185m above sea level and surrounded by gorgeous, wooded mountainside.

Set by Lake Iseo, the iconic Riva facility in Sarnico produces 27-68 models

With Bergamo to the west and Milan just over an hour away, the home of Riva has easy access to city life, but the sub-alpine lakeside setting of the Sarnico shipyard feels like another world. In contrast to the Group’s other production-dominated facilities, the 43,000sqm Sarnico site feels like a brand experience tour or a journey back in time.

Established by Carlo Riva in 1954, the site is where Riva’s iconic models of the 1950s and 1960s, such as the legendary Aquarama, were built on a large scale, establishing the brand as the boat of choice for royalty and film stars as la dolce vita gripped the nation.

A Riva 68’ Diable in front of La Plancia (the bridge)

Today, Sarnico produces all of Riva’s smaller models, from the 27ft Iseo to the 68ft Diable. These include the limited-edition Anniversario, which is based on the hull of the 33ft Aquariva, features styling inspired by the iconic Aquarama and was launched last year as part of the brand’s 180th anniversary.

The 17,000sqm of covered facilities includes numerous production sheds and four painting halls, hardware includes two jib cranes and a 50-tonne trolley, while the scenic waterfront offers 10 moorings.

Carlo Riva’s iconic office is a highlight of the Sarnico shipyard

One of the sheds is set up as a Riva museum and features several historic boats like an Ariston and a Triton, scale models, lots of photos and informative details on the brand’s history and boats. There’s also a separate workshop for restoring classic Rivas.

However, the focal point is the late Carlo Riva’s original office, which he designed himself and is a listed building, protected by the Italian Department of Cultural Heritage. Known as La Plancia (the bridge), the first-floor office protrudes from the front of the building like the prow of a yacht, suspended above the covered waterfront walkway and offering a 270-degree window views of the sheds, moorings and the lake.

A stunning Riva Lounge sets the scene

Below La Plancia and the other offices on the first floor is a beautifully designed Riva Lounge, with walls covered in photos, both historic and modern. Like the interior of a Riva yacht, the whole room features elegant furniture in stainless steel, leather and wood, racks display Riva accessories and memorabilia including F1 helmets, while a curved staircase leads to a mezzanine landing that continues the theme.

And if you’re lucky, you might even be invited aboard the last Aquarama produced (hull 784, launched in 1996) for a cruise on Lake Iseo to have lunch at the exclusive Riva Privée on the top floor of the Spirito Divino waterfront restaurant.

LA SPEZIA: NEXT-LEVEL RIVAS

The Riva story continues in La Spezia, one of Italy’s main yacht-building hubs along the country’s northwest coast along with Massa, Viareggio and Livorno, ensuring a strong supply chain and network of sub-contractors.

On the west coast, the La Spezia shipyard builds Riva models from 76-130ft

Ferretti Group acquired the waterfront facility in 2001, upgrading the shipyard before beginning yacht production in 2004. Today, about 550 employees and sub-contractors work on the 69,000sqm site, which has about 17,000sqm of indoor facilities including production sheds and two beautiful three-sided office buildings that overlook a series of berths covered by an enormous roof structure. A 400-tonne travel-lift is among the hardware.

The shipyard – which used to build some Custom Line yachts –today produces 76-130ft Riva models, which include the 76’ Bahamas Super and 88’ Florida from the Open range, plus the 76’ Perseo Super and 88’ Folgore from the Sportfly series.

The site also builds the fast-growing Flybridge series, which began with the 100’ Corsaro that premiered in Hong Kong in March 2017. Last year, the 24th unit was succeeded by the first 102’ Corsaro (Yacht Style Issue 66 cover), which fits in a range that includes the similarly in-demand 90’ Argo, 110’ Dolcevita and 130’ Bellissima.

The first 130’, the US-owned Janus, debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show last September, when the 299GRT model had already secured close to double-figure sales. The La Spezia facility has the capacity to build three units of the Bellissima at one time, having launched about 45 Riva Flybridge yachts in the past six years.

The 102’ Corsaro Super was launched last year and early sales include a unit for Taiwan

Ferretti Group is aiming to increase production at the site from just under 30 units a year to 35, an even more imposing task when you consider the 130’ Bellissima is now among the models.

As such, new production sheds, offices, showrooms and client areas – where buyers can discuss materials, décor, exterior colours and other options – are already under construction and set for completion in the coming year. Progress never stops.

The Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona on Italy’s east coast

When you’ve been whisked around Italy to see all six of Ferretti Group’s shipyards, the words “we never stop” come to mind. It’s a phrase that Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi frequently uses when speeding through progress reports from a company that oversees seven yacht builders: Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Custom Line, CRN, Itama and Wally, the company’s most recent brand acquisition.

Business was good in the post-Covid era, but it moved to a new level last year. Sales worth €942 million in the first eight months of 2022 marked a 36 per cent increase on the same period in the previous year, with roughly 50 per cent of the Group’s order book from EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), 40 per cent in the Americas and 10 per cent in Asia-Pacific.

Furthermore, the Group’s yacht production increased by about 20 per cent last year, while the total area of its facilities expanded over 14 per cent to more than 284,000sqm, with construction of new buildings evident in at least half of the shipyards we viewed.

The new-look Ferretti Group showroom in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Its workforce includes about 1,600 employees and 2,500 external suppliers, although they’re not all in Italy. Majority owned by China’s SHIG-Weichai Group since 2012, Ferretti Group has an Asia-Pacific headquarters and a service centre in Hong Kong, as well as a Shanghai showroom in the Bellagio Hotel.

In the US, the new-look Ferretti Group showroom in Florida was opened late last year during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Spanning about 2,000sqm, the facility is described by Ferretti Group as “the largest covered in-water showroom in the Americas” and includes a welcome area for customers, offices, 12 covered berths and a Riva Lounge.

The Group’s Fort Lauderdale facilities also include a 4,000sqm service yard that features 16 indoor and open-air berths, while offering service, refits and deliveries in collaboration with the adjoining marina.

In Italy, the Group is continuing to implement energy-saving technology in its shipyards, with its solar assisted trigeneration system reducing fuel and energy costs by about 20-25 per cent, an enormous saving when building on an industrial scale.

The trigeneration technology was first implemented at the CRN facility in Ancona, is being used on the new Wally facilities in Forlì and is also being rolled out on new buildings in La Spezia, where Riva models from 76-130ft are built. Reducing the carbon footprint of its production facilities is one of the Group’s main sustainability objectives, along with eco-friendly materials in its yachts and low-emission propulsion systems.

The Superyacht Yard in Ancona produces CRN, Custom Line, metal Riva and aluminium Pershing builds

“The trigeneration systems are a big investment. We pay in advance, but it comes back forever,” Galassi says. CCO Stefano de Vivo adds: “And it makes a lot more difference than putting a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system on a yacht.”

Modernisation efforts include new digital monitoring work stations with large, protected touchscreen TVs, which are being tested in Custom Line’s production sheds. If successful, the system could be gradually rolled out to other brands and shipyards, replacing the pen-and-paper tracking system.

Financially, Ferretti Group is flying high, with business soaring since Galassi and De Vivo took over as CEO and CCO respectively in 2014, two years after the Weichai acquisition. However, its huge network of shipyards in Italy are primarily the result of a series of brand acquisitions that started in the late 1990s.

The 62m Rio was one of three CRN launches in Ancona in 2022

Founded as an agent for Chris-Craft in 1968, Ferretti only built its first motor yacht in 1982. As product sizes increased and clients demanded more customisation, the company created the in-house Custom Line brand in 1996 to focus on yachts from 30m upwards.

Ferretti Group then expanded its portfolio quickly and dramatically, acquiring Pershing, CRN, Riva and Itama in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004 respectively. Meanwhile, it further expanded its network of shipyards by acquiring the La Spezia site in 2001, while the purchase of Wally was announced at the 2019 edition of Boot Dusseldorf, showing a company never content to sit still.

Today, its six shipyards are led in size by the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in the east-coast city of Ancona. Further up the Adriatic coast are the inland facilities of Mondolfo, Cattolica and Forlì, which is home to the company’s headquarters, although several of the Group’s most senior executives are based in Milan, Italy’s financial capital and second-biggest city.

Just over an hour’s drive east of Milan is Riva’s iconic Sarnico shipyard on scenic Lake Iseo, while the brand’s larger models from 76-130ft are built in La Spezia, in the heart of Italian yacht building on the northwest coast. The six facilities vary dramatically, whether it’s east coast or west coast, inland or seaside, in towns or farmland, mono-brand or multi-brand.

Built in Ancona, the Riva 50Metri will be succeeded by the aluminium-hull 54Metri

Furthermore, the full range of yacht models produced by the Group is remarkable, spanning from 8m to over 80m. And there’s a world of difference in the time and facilities needed to build a 27ft Riva Iseo compared to CRN’s upcoming 85m megayacht with a volume of 2,900GT – almost six times the size of the 52m Ciao launched last year.

ANCONA: SUPERYACHT YARD

Covering about 80,000sqm in Ancona, a port city with ferry services to the likes of Croatia and Greece, the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard is the crown jewel of the company’s production facilities. The historical home of CRN, it also houses all Custom Line production and in recent years has become home to the Riva Superyachts Division and Pershing’s aluminium builds.

Facing the Adriatic Sea, the eight hectares feature over 30,000sqm of covered facilities including nine production sheds and offices, a 670-tonne travel-lift plus a dock area offering 14 moorings for yachts up to 100m and protected by long sea walls.

Buildings under construction include facilities for visiting crew and a new office for CRN staff, separate to Custom Line employees, all part of a €50 million investment to upgrade and increase capacity in the shipyard. Typically, about 1,000 people work on site, a mix of employees and sub-contractors, with about half focused on Custom Line.

Custom Line staged 20 launches in Ancona in 2022

Set on the west side of the shipyard, Custom Line had just two sheds when its production was moved here in 2016, but now has five, with the newest three for the brand’s bigger models. One shed is dedicated to the Navetta 30, which succeeded the popular Navetta 28, debuted in late 2020 and already has five sales in Asia, with two already delivered to Hong Kong and one in Singapore.

Custom Line launched a remarkable 20 fibreglass superyachts last year including hull 10 of the Navetta 30 (hull 11 launched in late January 2023), the 25th Navetta 33, the 14th Navetta 37 and the ninth Navetta 42.

Among the Planing series, launches included the 15th unit of the Custom Line 106’ and hull eight of the 120’, but the biggest splash was the first hull of the flagship 140’, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival before appearing at the Monaco Yacht Show. The next units of the Custom Line 140’, including hull three sold to Hong Kong, are already in production.

With fibreglass hulls and superstructures built externally, Custom Line’s onsite build times range from nine to 12 months depending on model size, before yachts spend a month or two in the water for final outfitting, fine-tuning and sea trials.

Despite being the quiet achiever among Ferretti Group brands, Custom Line also never stops, with its upcoming flagship Navetta 50 announced midway through last year. Hulls one and two are in build, but as it has an aluminium hull, its construction is being overseen by CRN’s technical team, with the first unit due in mid-2024.

CRN, which builds fully custom steel and aluminium yachts from 45-95m, is also on a roll. Launches last year included the 62m Rio (Yacht Style Issue 67 cover) and the 52m Ciao, which both had world premieres at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show and feature exterior design by Dutch studio Omega Architects.

The builder also launched the 60m CRN M/Y 141, an all-aluminium build designed by Nuvolari Lenard. The next project out of the shed will be the 72m M/Y 139, featuring an exterior by Andrea Vallicelli and interior by Nuvolari Lenard. This will be followed by the 67m M/Y 143, Project Maranello, which has exterior and interior design by Nuvolari Lenard and hybrid propulsion.

CRN signed two more projects last year: the 70m M/Y 145 and the 85m M/Y 144 (2,900GT), its biggest project to date, topping the 80.5m Chopi Chopi (2,363GT) launched in 2013. The hulls for

both new models should arrive in Ancona towards the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the third and last Riva 50Metri is in build following the launches of Race and Fifty in 2019 and 2021 respectively, while construction has begun on the all-aluminium 54Metri, which has been sold.

Production continues on the remarkable Pershing 140, the 43m, triple-waterjet aluminium superyacht with a top speed of 38 knots. Hull one, Chorusline, was delivered to its Hong Kong owner in 2019 and output has since been steady, with the Ancona shipyard scheduled to begin work on hull five early this year.

Launch of the first Pershing 140, an aluminium model now up to hull five

Following the “we never stop” mantra, Ferretti Group last year announced the Pershing 170, a 52m, sub-500GT aluminium tri-deck featuring an ‘all-season private terrace’, with the first hull arriving at the Ancona shipyard in early 2024. “It’s a busy shipyard,” Galassi says, with understatement.

MONDOLFO: DOMINATED BY PERSHING

Pershing’s main base is the futuristic-looking, 45,000sqm Mondolfo facility, which is about an hour’s drive up the coast, but about 3km from the sea. Opened in 2004, the fantastic, glass-fronted office building feels as high-tech as a Pershing, yet is located just a stone’s throw from where the brand began in a modest set-up over four decades ago, in an area better known for farming and wine.

The office rooftop offers a view of a small shed 150m away, where in 1981 Tilli Antonelli co-founded Cantiere Navale dell’Adriatico, which started to become recognised as Pershing after the 1985 debut of the Pershing 45 motor yacht designed with Fulvio De Simoni, who still designs for the brand. Based on this launch, Pershing will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025.

Highlights of the office building include internal access to a suspended walkway that offers a dramatic internal view over one of the site’s two similarly sized production sheds, A and B, which face each other. The site’s 13,000sqm of indoor facilities include an innovative 500sqm painting hall – big enough for the new GTX116 – where the vessels are powder coated.

The travel-lift, which carries up to 130 tonnes, completes operations with beaching and launching into the 2m-deep, 8m-wide test pool, which is just long enough to fit the 35m GTX116. Depth is no problem as its draft is just 1.45m, part of the appeal for the US-based buyer of hull one and the Italian owner of hull two.

Completed boats – which included the former Pershing 115 – are then put on a truck and transported to Fano, 30km up the coast, with the last few weeks of production typically spent on the water. The GTX116 is the brand’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 as it takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector.

It still boasts the sporty power Pershing is renowned for, with triple 2,000hp MAN V12s plus waterjets providing the 116-footer with a top speed of 35 knots, yet it has been described as “a performance SUV, the Lamborghini Urus of the sea”.

Mondolfo continues to build Pershing’s powerful X series, which comprises the 5X, 6X, 7X, 8X and 9X (92ft). The 7X premiered at Boot Dusseldorf in 2020 and has already secured close to 30 sales, while the 48-knot 6X that debuted at Cannes in 2021 is also proving hugely popular.

The Mondolfo site is running at 100 per cent capacity – “maybe 110 per cent” – according to Pershing sales staff, as the facility is also building some Wally and Itama models. These include the Wallywhy200 – an 89ft, 200GT model coming to Asia – Wallywhy150, Itama 75 and Itama 45RS.

Look out for the beautiful green hull used on the first unit of the Wallywhy150, the 150GT 79-footer set to debut this year.
