Gulf Craft took centre stage at this year’s Gulf Superyacht Summit, which was held at Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island in the UAE’s biggest emirate. Under the patronage of P&O Marinas, the summit highlighted the Gulf as a premier superyacht winter destination, spotlighting UAE’s marina developments and the region’s emergence as a crypto capital.

During the ‘Future of the Gulf’ panel segment, Abeer Alshaali, Gulf Craft’s Deputy Managing Director, engaged in a discussion centred on spotlighting key institutions committed to fostering greater alignment at the highest levels.

“The Gulf Superyacht Summit has grown over the years and has become a valuable platform where stakeholders come together to discuss both the specific issues of yachting in the Gulf and larger discussions affecting superyachts,” Alshaali said after the show.

“The next step is to come out of this summit with an action plan, to create a path for the industry to contribute to the economies of the Gulf countries, create jobs and grow the leisure marine ecosystem.”

The Eco division of Sunreef Yachts offers natural fibre composites for interior and exterior furniture and fittings.

Natural fibre composites pair flax fibre with bio-based or recyclable resin

Sunreef Yachts Eco has introduced natural fibre composites (NFC) as it seeks to make all aspects of the yachting experience more energy efficient and responsible. The natural fibre composites can be used in furniture, fittings and fixtures, both indoor and outdoor.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

On the flybridge, NFCs can be used in the jacuzzi, ceiling, bar, table and sofas

The shipyard’s R&D department developed natural fibre composites as part of the process of building sustainable yachts, with Eco yachts including energy-saving technology like the Sunreef’s patented solar skin, hydrogeneration, wind turbines, lightweight lithium batteries and energy-saving air-conditioning.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

NFCs can also be used in the console and base of the helm seats

Natural fibre composites use flax fibre to obtain high-quality composite structures with excellent mechanical characteristics. The fibre is paired with bio-based or recyclable resin to create solid, reliable natural composites. The flax fabrics can be woven into countless patterns and can be dyed into an endless variety of colours.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

NFCs have a negative CO2 footprint

Flax fabrics demonstrate a negative CO2 footprint, due to the absorption of CO2 during the plant growth. The natural fibre composites can be recycled by extracting both the resin and the fibre, to give both materials a new life.

Damen Yachting has delivered the third Amels 60, Khalidah, to her owner. The 60m, 830GT Amels Limited Editions superyacht will remain at the Amels headquarters in Vlissingen City until departure.

Khalidah features custom interiors by Winch Design that feature light materials, woods, scattered pops of colour, artistic elements and high-tech lighting and entertainment solutions. The room divider in the owner’s suite is created with carefully selected art pieces and sea-related items, and lighting and music can be altered to set the mood in any area at the touch of a button.

Espen Øino penned the timeless exterior design, which includes the Amels 60’s eye-catching signature trapezoid windows.

Rob Luijendijk, Director of Sales at Damen Yachting, said: “Her striking design, future-proof package and proven capability are just some of the outstanding qualities of the Amels 60. To see so many of these yachts with their owners in such as short space of time is incredible.”

The owner of Khalidah has appointed Deeside Maritime for the final stages of the build and the operational management of the yacht.

Nick Flashman, the owner’s representative, and founder and Director of Deeside Maritime, said: “I’ve worked on a number of Amels new builds over the years and have great experience of working with the Damen Yachting team and their fantastic technical build platform and operational performance.

“It was this experience and knowledge that the owner and family office were looking for when appointing someone to not only oversee the crucial final stages of the build but to take the operational management of the yacht forward beyond delivery. The delivery represents one of the more significant milestones as, together with the yard and the owner’s team, we mark the move from build towards onboard enjoyment.”

The Amels 60 can accommodate up to 12 guests overnight in six staterooms including an owner’s suite with a folding balcony, en-suite bathroom and dressing room. There’s also accommodation for 12 crew plus the captain.

Features include space for a 9m tender on the foredeck and a beach clubhouse with a sauna and steam room. The sun deck is a flexible space and can include a Jacuzzi, barbecue and touch-and-go helipad. The Amels 60 series features cutting-edge equipment and technology including IMO Tier III-compliant hybrid power and propulsion.

Joppe Osté, Project Manager at Damen Yachting, said: “This proven hybrid system currently offers the best solution to reduce harmful emissions, reduce noise and vibrations while benefiting from lower fuel and maintenance costs. It also allows you to cruise up to a certain speed without using the main engines, solely cruising on the generators.”

Sanlorenzo Asia presented the Collectors Lounge at the 10th edition of West Bund Art & Design, a four-day event held at the West Bund Art and Exhibition Centre as part of the Shanghai Art Week.

A first-time participant, Sanlorenzo Asia collaborated with long-term partner Wei Gallery to present the triptych artwork ‘Deep Blue Love’ by artist Alixe Fu. The display booth utilised the brand’s minimalist design, with the ocean artwork flanked by two LED walls.

Sanlorenzo, Asia, yacht, builder, West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai Art Week, Wei Gallery, Alixe Fu, Deep Blue Love

Created with the concept of “embracing the sea and thinking like a whale”, the French-Chinese artist’s latest piece is made of oil painting on canvas and multiple materials, and depicts the issue of looking after the planet and its ecosystem.

Fu frequently integrates the concept of environmental protection and public welfare into his personal creations. With ‘Deep Blue Love’, he expresses his concern for plastic pollution and calls for the reduction of waste and protection of the earth.

Sustainability and ocean protection is a component of Sanlorenzo’s Road to 2030 strategy, which focuses on clean energies and sustainability.

Born in 1961 in Yunlin, Taiwan, Fu currently lives between Taiwan, Paris and Beijing. His experience of living in France for many years has allowed him to embrace Western art movements such as Cubism and Surrealism while maintaining his experience of traditional Chinese art.

Working on oil paintings, colour ink, sculptures and public art, he has travelled to Paris, New York, Tokyo and elsewhere around the world for exhibitions. His works have been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and other institutions in Europe, America, and Asia.

Sanlorenzo’s presence at West Bund Art & Design is part of the brand’s long-term commitment to art, which includes being the global yachting partner of Art Basel. The shipyard also created Sanlorenzo Arts, a collection of interactive works and projects covering sustainability, environment, technology, nature, sea and humanity.

The main deck starts aft with a custom glass-bottomed pool, while the sunbathing area leads into the main saloon through a cocktail transition area. The saloon has resin flooring, full-height windows and a double-sided sofa at its centre: on one side living space, on the other a living area that can be converted into dining.

The lobby features a sculptural, imposing central staircase that connects all the decks, while the ceiling above the staircase is made of transparent glass. Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, chose the interior furnishings, which are characterised by neutral tones and natural materials. The main deck has a full-beam cabin forward.

A customised, curved sliding door leads into the upped-deck saloon, which also has full-height windows, while the full-beam owner’s suite benefits from a private swimming pool in the bow.

On the bridge deck, the outdoor area offers living and dining areas, while the interior can function as a DJ area, with a table concealing the music equipment, or an intimate space for conversation. The lower deck has two VIP cabins and two guest cabins with single beds that can be converted into doubles.

Dubai Harbour will host the Dubai International Boat Show for a third successive year as the Middle East’s biggest yacht show returns for its 30th edition from February 28-March 3, 2024.

The 2023 edition in early March attracted more than 28,000 visitors, 1,000 brands and companies, and featured over 200 boats including 44 global and regional debuts according to the show’s long-term organiser, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

UAE builder Gulf Craft is traditionally the leading exhibitor at the show and last year debuted several models including the Majesty 111 among its 15 boats in the water. Other brands on show with local dealers included Riva, Pershing and Ferretti Yachts of Ferretti Group, Azimut, Sanlorenzo, Princess, Sunseeker, Sunreef, Riviera, Lagoon, Beneteau, Jeanneau, De Antonio and Say Carbon Yachts.

The 68m Soaring built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen was the show’s largest yacht and was exhibited by Ocean Independence, which also displayed the 37m Tecnomar Evo 120 Viktoriia with The Italian Sea Group. Other superyachts included the 47m Heesen Anita shown by Behnemar and the 32m Baglietto Lady Maia exhibited by BlackOrange.

The Middle East’s boating market has risen post-Covid, with many major builders reporting increased sales and appointing new dealers. Over the past year, Camper & Nicholsons and IYC are among superyacht brokerage houses to open a regional office in the UAE, while Sunreef Yachts has opened both an office in Dubai and a new production facility in Ras Al Khaimah.

The maritime sector accounts for seven per cent of Dubai’s GDP, while the MENA region has the second-highest fleet to billionaire ratio, DWTC states. In addition, the Middle East has experienced a 16.9 per cent surge in ultra-wealthy individuals and the UAE is the top destination for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).

ONE°15 has announced that it has set aside S$250,000 in conservation funding to support a range of initiatives with local universities including Singapore Management University (SMU). The announcement was made in the wake of the second Blue Water EduFest at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

The marine conservation funding initiative encompasses a three-year marine sustainability scholarship programme for low-income students; a five-year conservation project to develop coral and marine biodiversity at ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island off Batam; and seed funding for early career researchers in marine science over three years.

ONE°15 also pledged to support ‘The Young Sustainability Champion Programme’, a nationwide youth design challenge in partnership with the Science Centre Singapore. This initiative will involve mentoring selected secondary school students as they work on solutions to address marine-related challenges.

Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO of SUTL Group

Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO of SUTL Group, initiated the three-day Blue Water EduFest last year and was happy with the second edition, which again included The Ocean Collective Summit, Blue Water Heroes Awards and ONE15 Clean Up.

“The event has grown in depth since its inception, with a chorus of positive feedback highlighting its substantial impact,” Tay said. “The increased presence of influential decision-makers signifies our potential to drive real change. Let’s seize this opportunity not only to push for tangible action but also to sow the seeds of change in the hearts and minds of those new to marine conservation.”

Julian Chang, President, The International SeaKeepers Society, Asia, added: “We believe that through education, in its many forms, we can create a better awareness of the threats to our oceans and drive meaningful change in our interaction with the oceans.
