The spotlight is again on the Middle East as the Dubai International Boat Show returns from March 9-13 after two years in the Covid wilderness.

Flashback to a recent Dubai International Boat Show; opening hours are from mid-afternoon until after nightfall to avoid the heat of the day

Already golf’s inaugural DP World Tour, replacing the European Tour, surprisingly spent most of January and February in the United Arab Emirates, where the F1 Grand Prix season had just ended with a controversial win by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in the deciding Abu Dhabi F1 GP at Yas Marina.

These are premier events for superyacht people – Monaco has its famous F1 GP too taking in Port Hercule – and carefully-managed crowds are finally back to see them, along with the elite set and their private aircraft.

Visitors throng hard standing displays at a previous edition

Pro golfers are great superyacht and jet aficionados, and will need them as the new DP World Tour features 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, five of which are Rolex Series events. Prize money is over US$200 million, plus far more in lucrative individual sponsorships. Three of the tournaments are co-sanctioned with the money-leading, FedEx-backed US PGA Tour.

DP World, established in Dubai in 1972, has evolved into a leading provider of global smart end-to end supply chains and logistics solutions. The European Tour hit off the same year, and since 2009 DP World has been its partner. Dubai International Boat Show began two decades later, in 1992.

Originally known as the Watersports and Powerboat Show, it hovered around Dubai Creek and the land-based Dubai World Trade Centre, which still runs it, until moving gradually down principal thoroughfare Sheikh Zayed Road to the Dubai International Marine Club at Mina Seyahi, Dubai Marina, and finally to a relatively newly-built Dubai Harbour.

The marina at Dubai Harbour has 1,100 berths, making it the largest in the Middle East and North Africa. It features a state-of-the art Harbour Master building, helipad, crew facilities, two refuelling stations, storage, pump out services, superyacht bunkering, and can take vessels to 160m, which is about the same length as the Winch-designed Dubai, owned by the Ruler of Dubai and Vice President and PM of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashad Al Maktoum.

Dubai Harbour Yacht Club

Nearby Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, where the F1 circuit is located, has 227 berths, accommodating superyachts to 175m. Two Espen Øino-designed superyachts, the 73m Rabdan and 77m Smeralda, are owned by UAE Crown Princes, and were constructed in aluminium by SilverYachts in Western Australia. The 88.3m Dubawi, a former cruise liner that has been extensively refitted by Platinum Yachts, is believed part of the ruling families’ fleet too.

Presently in and out of port after extensive Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean voyaging is the extraordinary 118m Motor Yacht A, so-called because there is also a Sailing Yacht A. The motor yacht is owned by a young Russian billionaire, and is designed by the trendsetting Philippe Starck. She was built by Blohm & Voss, now absorbed into Lürssen’s eight yards in Germany. Lürssen also built the 60m Caipirinha, similarly in the Gulf, delivered in 2009.

Damen Yachting had the 62m Amels Limited Edition Sea & Us visiting, and two vessels built by Golden Yachts of Greece show up on AIS Marine Traffic in the region, 52.7m Oneiro and 72m Natalina A. A further clutch of vessels around 50m and below were noted in the UAE as well, including Australian-built 53m Ocean Seven, and formerly Australian-owned 50m Mangusta Ellerston.

New Zealand-built 50m Sensation has been along the coast at Jebel Ali for some years. More big boats are further up the Gulf in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, UAE neighbour Oman has equity in Oceanco, and Saudi Arabian yachts, including some of the world’s largest, are around in the Red Sea or the Med.

Another view of a recent show, which attracts potential owners from many parts of the Gulf and other countries nearby

Superyacht builders who exhibit in Dubai encourage owners to take part with them, but logistics do not always fit. Relative proximity of the Med helps, and there are often superyachts nearby in the Seychelles, Maldives and Mauritius at this time of year. Sometimes really big boats make a surprise appearance at literally the last minute.

Singapore has welcomed the first Bluegame motor yacht in Southeast Asia, with the BGX70 generating huge interest from passers-by as it berthed in ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

The BGX70 in Singapore is the first Bluegame model in Southeast Asia

The first Bluegame motor yacht in Southeast Asia has made an instant impact in Singapore even without a public launch event. Dealer Simpson Marine said the new BGX70 berthed in front of its office in ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove has led to round-the-clock enquiries from existing clients and even passers-by strolling along the boardwalk.

“We’ve never had so many enquiries from one boat,” says Julien Solari, Singapore Country Manager for Simpson Marine, which has represented Bluegame across Asia since 2020, having represented its parent company Sanlorenzo across the continent since 2015.

“Since the BGX70 arrived, we’ve been receiving calls and messages from people who walk past the boat and our office. People are used to seeing more traditional motor yachts in the marina, so this

really makes people stop and stare.”

The massive aft platform leads straight into the saloon

Bluegame launched the BGX70 in 2019, with the model effectively continuing the design concept behind Sanlorenzo’s SX crossover range into smaller sizes. Zuccon International Project – responsible for Sanlorenzo’s SX series – designed the model with Bluegame founder Luca Santella, while Lou Codega handled the naval architecture.

LOWER-DECK LIVING

With an exterior more akin to a military patrol boat than a luxury yacht, the 72-footer has just two decks, in contrast to most of the flybridge motor yachts of this length seen elsewhere in the marina.

The BGX70’s lower deck starts with an enormous swim platform, which can carry water toys and a tender that can be deployed by a crane cleverly integrated into the bulwark. On the port side, the platform plays host to an enormous wet bar with Gaggenau grill, while the starboard side features exterior stairs to the main deck, among the yacht’s three staircases for guests.

As well as being unusually large, the platform leads straight into the main saloon, which is just a couple of steps down and has views of the water on both sides as well as an extensive vista over the aft platform.

Port view of the master suite, which is forward of the lower-deck saloon

“On BGX models, people spend a lot of the daytime on the lower deck, which on other yachts is typically only used for sleeping at night. It’s a unique design and a unique way of using a boat,” Solari says.

“Sanlorenzo’s SX range launched in 2017 revolutionised the market and many other brands have followed the large aft platform connecting to the cockpit. Now, I think you’ll see more shipyards follow the BGX concept, with the large swim platform leading into the saloon.”

The yacht’s radical design is made possible by using Volvo Penta’s IPS system, so the engines can fit under the large platform rather than further forward, where the engine room would occupy a sizeable portion of the lower deck on a more conventional motor yacht.

Bluegame, BGX70, Singapore, ONE°15 Marina, Sentosa Cove, Simpson Marine, Sanlorenzo, Julien Solari, Lou Codega, Luca Santella, Zuccon International Project, BGX60, BG72, BG62, BG42, BG54

Aft from the ‘middle cabin’ through the master suite and saloon to the aft platform

“It’s all because of the IPS system. On a typical yacht, the engines would be where the [BGX70] saloon is, but the IPS can be located just under the swim platform. It’s a beautiful and unconventional layout, whereas almost all other yachts of this length have the same layout as each other.”

FLEXIBLE INTERIOR

The hull in Singapore features a light oak interior and luxury furniture by Minotti and Poltrona Frau, while Simpson Marine dressed the yacht for private viewings with luxury bedding from Frette, decorative clothes and bags from Berluti and crystalware from Baccarat. “Like Sanlorenzo, Bluegame is almost unlimited in what it can offer in terms of design and furniture,” Solari says.

The saloon offers access to the main deck up an internal staircase, while a forward door leads directly into the full-beam master suite.

Bluegame, BGX70, Singapore, ONE°15 Marina, Sentosa Cove, Simpson Marine, Sanlorenzo, Julien Solari, Lou Codega, Luca Santella, Zuccon International Project, BGX60, BG72, BG62, BG42, BG54

The convertible central room can connect to the master suite or be a separate guest cabin

On the hull ordered for Singapore, the master suite is connected to a multifunctional room featuring modular furniture than can be arranged to form an L-shaped sofa, twin berths or a double bed, making it suitable as a children’s room. Depending on the set-up, it can also be used by the owners as a private lounge, cinema, office or even gym.

If required, the room can be transformed into a guest cabin by closing the ‘hidden door’ and partition between the rooms. In such a case, this middle cabin is accessible from the forward hallway, which also leads to the VIP cabin in the bow and stairs up to the main deck.

UP AND ABOUT

The main deck starts with an outdoor area that includes an L-shaped sofa and a dining table. Side decks lead to the bow area, a remarkable social area with sofas on each side connected to an oversized sunbathing area forward, which covers access to the crew cabin below.

Bluegame, BGX70, Singapore, ONE°15 Marina, Sentosa Cove, Simpson Marine, Sanlorenzo, Julien Solari, Lou Codega, Luca Santella, Zuccon International Project, BGX60, BG72, BG62, BG42, BG54

The expansive foredeck features a huge sunbathing area and adjustable tables

A bimini can cover the area, while those wanting a more secluded spot can lounge on sunpads on top of the superstructure.

The main-deck interior includes a dining area that’s served by a discreet, elegant galley along the starboard side. The twin-seat helm station is set slightly to port and technology includes the IPS joystick and Dynamic Positioning System, which automatically maintains the boat’s position without anchoring, even in strong currents and waves.

The hull in Singapore includes lithium batteries, which can power the air-conditioning and other onboard systems silently overnight without the need to run the generator.

The main deck offers indoor and outdoor dining, plus a long galley to starboard

Bluegame’s other models include the BGX60 launched in 2020 and the more open-style BG range that includes 42, 62 and 72 models and the upcoming BG54.

“We’re already in discussions to bring more Bluegame models to Singapore and we expect more orders now that people can see the BGX70 for themselves,” Solari says. “This is just the beginning.”

Bluegame BG72 builds on strong platform

For its newest model, Italy’s Bluegame has combined the huge aft platform and lower-deck saloon of its ground-breaking BGX series with the open style of its BG range. Welcome aboard the BG72, which offers the best of both worlds from a brand that’s growing fast in Asia.

The yacht offers almost 2,500sqft (230sqm) of internal and external deck space, starting from twin bathing platforms and an aft cockpit with C-shaped seating, dining table and chairs. The foredeck is reached by symmetrical side decks and a forward saloon door, and features two L-shaped sofas, oversized sunbeds, ample storage, plus refrigeration and bimini options.

The interior has an aft galley to port with full size fridge-freezer and a large island counter with bar and stools, while opposite is a large dining table for eight. Forward to starboard is a twin-seat helm station accompanied by a large L-shaped seating area, which can also be arranged as an office. The Navetta 75 succeeds the 73 as the yard’s flagship

Absolute has marked its 20th anniversary by introducing the Navetta 75, the new flagship of the inland builder. Notable features include modular furniture on the terrace cockpit and flybridge, as seen on the 60 Fly that debuted at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival and the 56 Fly set to premiere at this year’s show.

The Navetta 75’s long flybridge can be accessed by stairs from both the cockpit and the bow, while the helm station in the main-deck saloon is in a raised position. As well as the helm on the flybridge, two more mooring stations are available in strategic positions.

On the lower deck, the yard’s signature features include the forward owner’s cabin in the bow, which has private access and is on a higher level than the rest of the lower deck. Guest cabins comprise two doubles with private bathrooms and a twin bed cabin with a day-head. The aft crew quarters can be accessed from the cockpit and feature up to three beds, a bathroom and private galley.

Founded in Piacenza in 2002, Absolute designs and builds luxury yachts from 47-75ft across its Navetta, Flybridge and Coupé ranges, and is represented in Hong Kong by Absolute Marine.

Beneteau is developing a new flagship sailing yacht, with the Oceanis Yacht 60 scheduled to premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11.

The Oceanis Yacht 60 ocean cruiser has been designed by Italians Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento, who also designed the Oceanis Yacht 54. Featuring a gentle reverse sheer, the elegant 18m hull profile of the 60 echoes that of its 54ft sister.

The yacht features two well-equipped helm stations

The cockpit’s matching sofas, tables and sunbathing areas continue the Oceanis Yacht design, while the safe, free-flowing movement includes wide side-decks that run around the helm stations and offer access to the foredeck.

With two helm stations, controlling the boat’s course is as easy as trimming the sails, windward or leeward. The owner can carry out all the usual manoeuvres without leaving the helm, a plus on a big boat when sailing short-handed.

An innovative bimini is supported by the mainsail arch, keeping sheets safe and out of the way, and comes in an optional rigid version. Maintained by two lateral supports, the central section can slide forward to adjust the amount of cover in the cockpit.

The large bathing platform provides access to a garage that can house a 2.8m jet-propelled tender, which is launched and retrieved by a system with double wires and guiding rollers. Onboard systems such as Ship Control and Seanapps manage the boat’s systems and simplify maintenance and monitoring.

Damen Yachting is building hull one of the YS 53, a new addition to the Dutch-owned conglomerate’s Yacht Support range.

The YS 53 joins the YS 65 and YS 75 in the Yacht Support portfolio

Damen Yachting has added the YS 53 to its Yacht Support range. Following a two-year design and development phase, hull one of the 175ft vessel is in build at the company’s facility in Antalya, Turkey, and scheduled for delivery in 2023. The 499GT yacht has a beam of 9.2m (30ft) and a full-load draught of 3m (10ft).

To date, Damen Yachting has sold almost 20 Yacht Support vessels and provided ongoing global support and refit services for its fleet. The YS 53 is an all-new design and succeeds the original Yacht Support YS 5009, which debuted in 2009 and was based on workboat platforms from Damen’s commercial division.

Rob Luijendijk, Damen Yachting’s Director Sales and Product Management, said: “Over the last decade we’ve helped owners to realise an amazing variety of very challenging dreams. Each dream requires an innovative solution for something that has never been done before, so we have a very experienced team and a deep understanding of how to support our clients.

The YS 53 is 175ft long, 30ft wide and has a volume of 499GT

We realised that our new series needed to be both highly flexible and customisable, but also designed from scratch for the yachting market. That’s how the YS 53 began.”

Damen Yachting’s inhouse team of naval architects developed a new hull form in collaboration with the Damen Research Laboratory in the Netherlands, and has also completed the exterior and interior design of the YS 53.

Wouter Kleijpoel, Design Manager of the Yacht Support series, said: “The YS 53 exterior design starts with a familiar functionality, but there is more than meets the eye. It’s playful, muscular and emboldening; you believe anything is possible. I think it’s an exciting design.”

Like all Yacht Support vessels, the YS 53 has a huge, multifunctional platform

The vessel features a huge 15-tonne deck crane and two RollsRoyce MTU main engines delivering a total 4,480kW (6,000hp) for a top speed of 19 knots and a range of 5,000nm at 12 knots. The YS 53 will also be fully IMO Tier III compliant, reducing harmful emissions by 70 per cent for fullrange operations.

Asiamarine has appointed Alexandre Tricot and Phil Benson as Yacht Broker and Aftersales Manager respectively in Hong Kong, while Raphael Sachs has joined as a Yacht Broker in Thailand as the regional dealer continues to strengthen its staff across the region. Asiamarine’s new yacht sales portfolio includes Galeon, Bali, Tige, Nimbus and Wellcraft.

Tricot will manage the dealer’s representation of Bali Catamarans and brings strong experience in sailing and multihulls. The son of industry veteran Cyrille Tricot, a former Operations Director at The Moorings and Commercial Director of Catana (Bali’s parent company) and Privilège Catamarans, he served apprenticeships at Catana Group then Piriou Group in France, securing a master’s degree in naval architecture.

The Frenchman then worked in New Zealand and Australia, where he worked as a yard hand then a yacht broker. He then founded a business in Australia specialising in yacht management for private owners and yacht brokers.

Eric Noyel, founder and CEO of Asiamarine, said: “Alexandre brings a great amount of knowledge in sailing catamarans and multihulls. We deliver a lot of Bali catamarans to people without a lot of sailing experience, so it’s very useful to have Alexandre who can teach them how to use the boat and maintain it.”

Sachs, who worked in Hong Kong before moving to Thailand, represents both Asiamarine and Fraser, the international brokerage that the dealer has represented in Hong Kong and Thailand since early 2018. The Frenchman has spent over 20 years in Asia as an entrepreneur and senior executive in automobiles, consumer goods, business psychology and F&B.

Asiamarine’s new sales staff also include Candy Li, who joined the Hong Kong office as a Yacht Broker late last year. Brit Harvey Brewin has been working as a Yacht Broker in Hong Kong ahead of a move to Asiamarine’s new Singapore office, which opened in ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in mid-2021 and is headed by Winnie Ng and Suhaimi Badri.

Galeon dealer Asiamarine has delivered the first 325 GTO in Asia to an owner in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Benson is among Asiamarine’s new hires this year and brings over three decades of experience to his role as Aftersales Manager, joining from British builder Fairline. After working in the UK for over two decades, the Brit spent six years in Thailand, first as Volvo Penta’s Technical Engineer then Simpson Marine’s Aftersales Service Manager in Phuket.

Benson will coordinate Asiamarine’s aftersales business in Hong Kong, which was outsourced last year to Global Yacht Services headed by Bryan Tse.

Pershing GTX116

Ferretti Group has revealed updates on the Pershing GTX116 and Riva 130’ Bellissima, confirming that the first hull of each model has been sold to American owners. The US market accounts for 35 per cent of sales by the Ferretti Group, whose seven brands currently produce 46 models, of which 60 per cent have been launched in the past three years.

Formerly known as Project TØ, the GTX116 is set to be the 35m flagship of a GTX range that follows Pershing’s X series (5X, 6X, 7X, 8X, 9X), which was completed with last year’s release of the 6X.

The new GTX series is designed to revolutionise the sports yacht concept and places huge emphasis on open space by the water, evident in the expansive, multi-tiered beach club and drop-down balcony by the saloon, while there’s also a spa pool on the foredeck.

The GTX116 offers almost 1,800sqft (165sqnm) of outdoor areas across its three decks, while propulsion is from three MAN engines, each 1,800mhp or 2,000mhp, and Kamewa waterjets.

Ferretti Group also revealed the name of Riva’s new 130ft yacht, Bellissima, which is under construction at the La Spezia shipyard. Production capacity was recently upgraded at the shipyard, which produces the brand’s models from 76-130ft.

The Group has also signed an agreement with Aqua Marina Tech, the Israeli company that develops innovative solutions for saving lives at sea based on cutting-edge technology. On an exclusive basis, Ferretti Group will introduce the patented Watchit system, which uses anti-collision technology to prevent accidents at sea.

The Ferretti Group brand has passed a “thrilling” milestone in the construction of its customised 101ft cruiser-racer sailing yacht.

The sleek carbon hull of the bespoke Wally 101 (click for more details) has been lifted out of its female mould in a dramatic operation, marking a major milestone in the construction of the cruiser-racer inspired by the Wallycento box rule.

Stefano de Vivo, Managing Director of Wally, said: “This is the moment in the birth of a boat when her concept takes material shape for the first time and you get a glimpse of the vessel she will become. It’s thrilling to watch.”

Wally stated that although it’s rare for one-off yachts of this scale to use female moulding, which is time-consuming to build, it “ensures a near perfect exterior finish”, with the builder paying tribute to its lamination team.

Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and Chief Designer, said: “Our laminators have been with Wally since the brand’s first days and are among the best in the world. Their collaboration has helped us to develop techniques that bring the absolute best out of the high-end materials pioneered by Wally. We’re delighted to be one step closer to welcoming a fabulous new custom Wally into the world.”

The builder said very little filler was needed to fair the hull, further eliminating unnecessary weight, which was a critical part of the brief from the experienced owner, who has already had three Wally yachts.

After demoulding, the hull was laid in a cradle and moved back under cover for the next stage of its transformation. Shipwrights are installing the bulkheads that divide up the interior space, while wiring, piping, tanks and other engineering foundations are also being put in.

The lightweight carbon deck is currently in mould. Built using advanced pre-preg carbon-fibre in a sandwich composite, the Wally 101 is predicted to weigh 56 tonnes, of which 40 per cent is due to the lifting keel.

Even with the yacht including labour-saving technology such as Wally’s Magic Trim and Magic Traveller hydraulic systems, the builder believes the boat’s weight is 20 per cent lighter than yachts of similar size and capabilities.
