Italy’s Columbus Yachts recently completed sea trials of its first Sport 50, with the model’s world premiere scheduled for this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

The 50m K2 was designed by Luca Dini Design & Architecture

Columbus Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts, has completed the first sea trials of its new Sport 50 from its Ancona shipyard. Named K2, the 50m, 499GT superyacht is the owner’s third project by Palumbo Superyachts and the latest launch in the Italian builder’s Sport line, which began in 2011 with the Sport 40.

Luca Dini Design & Architecture handled the external lines and interior design of the Sport 50, while naval engineering is by Palumbo Superyachts in collaboration with Hydro Tec. Featuring a vertical bow and sleek lines, K2 has an aluminium hull and superstructure, a maximum draft of just 2.2m, and accommodation for 11 guests in five cabins and 11 crew in seven cabins.

K2 has a top speed of 21.5 knots with two 2,600hp MTU engines

Powered by two 2,600hp MTU engines, the Sport 50 reaches a top speed of 21.5 knots and a cruising speed of 17, and has a long range for transoceanic passages.

Performance analysis at the lowest speeds reported interesting results, considering the keel structure, with a consumption of 70 litres per hour at 10 knots. From a technical perspective, another carefully-considered aspect was noise and vibration reduction.

“Columbus 50 Sport achieved extremely low noise levels in the guest cabins,” the shipyard stated. “This is particularly remarkable as they were obtained at 85 per cent of engine power, at a speed slightly above 20 knots.”

K2 is scheduled to make her official debut at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 22-25.
