Set to debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the four-engine 120-footer is the first superyacht to feature Volvo Penta’s new IPS Professional Platform.
Sanlorenzo is preparing to debut the SX120 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, which will be held from September 9-14. Featuring exterior design by Zuccon International Project and interiors by Piero Lissoni, the 270GT, 120-footer is the first superyacht to feature the new Professional Platform for Volvo Penta’s IPS, and is fitted with four 1,000hp HP engines – two for each pod.
The IPS Professional Platform delivers the performance of larger engines with a smaller footprint and reduces fuel consumption and emissions, according to Sanlorenzo. Designed for the modular integration of both traditional and alternative energy sources, the platform includes an Eco Mode, which automatically adjusts engine power based on real-time demand to optimise consumption.
The system, which also includes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust-gas treatment service, is expected to produce a top speed of 23 knots and range of about 2,000nm at an economical cruising speed.
Tommaso Vincenzi, CEO of Sanlorenzo, said: “Volvo Penta’s new IPS Professional Platform is a compact, efficient system prepared for the use of hybrid energy sources, and designed to improve performance, autonomy and comfort while cruising. This innovative propulsion platform allows for the achievement of unique design solutions related to the use of efficient pods, even on large yachts.”
The compact IPS Professional Platform is located under the SX series’ iconic aft platform, which enables more space to be dedicated to lower-deck social areas. On the SX120, the 40sqm beach area can expand to 70sqm once the side decks are opened, while the central pool can be covered by a sliding, adjustable sofa moved by a lift-and-slide mechanism.
The beach club leads to an enclosed ‘lower lounge’, which has an integrated corner bar, while forward of the staircase is a hammam. The central hallway leads to four guest cabins, although one can be converted to a guest lounge, while forward is the crew quarters including six berths.
The main deck includes an aft cockpit with large dining table, a main saloon with a sculptural wooden-and-steel staircase, a full-beam owner’s suite, and a foredeck with convertible lounging areas. The upper deck includes an open aft deck, a skylounge and the helm station, while the sundeck includes a large, configurable ‘smart island’ sunpad.
“The SX120 represents the natural evolution of a range that has changed the way yachting is conceived and redefined the experience of living on board, introducing a new idea of space, liveability and connection with the sea,” Vincenzi said.
The SX120 is the flagship of a series that started with the SX88 and SX76 and followed up with by the SX112 and SX100.
Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director and founder of Lissoni & Partners, said: “The SX120 is the latest addition to the SX family, which I think is the most creative range in yachting in the last 30 years. The SX120 is a spectacular floating architecture. We took all the things the other SX models taught us and put them here. It has beaches, floors that interconnect, big openings … a real floating villa in the body of an absolutely extraordinary project that the SX is.”
