Damen Yachting has delivered the SeaXplorer 58 Pink Shadow to its owner, who will use the 58m, 1,090GT superyacht with family and friends around the world. Featuring naval architecture by Damen Yachting and an exterior designed with Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture, the superyacht has accommodation for 12 guests and 18 crew, and will soon also be available for charter.

Following the SeaXplorer 62 Anawa and SeaXplorer 77 La Datcha (click for Review), Pink Shadow is the third superyacht from the Dutch builder’s range of luxury explorer yachts and features a premium synthetic teak deck.

As well as being the first SeaXplorer 58, she’s the first SeaXplorer to be built at the Damen facility in Antalya, Turkey, where she was launched at the start of the year  (click for article) before embarking on sea trials (click for article).

Rob Luijendijk, Sales Director at Damen Yachting, said: “Pink Shadow is a perfect example of a yacht that can go the distance. The SeaXplorer 58 is a future-facing yacht for many reasons, and it is great to see her owner on board making the most of such a capable platform. All of us here at Damen Yachting and Damen Yachting Antalya are immensely proud of this custom project.”

Standout features include a cabana-style bar and lounge with an adjoining infinity pool beneath the certified helideck. The sun deck has a sky lounge, dining area, outdoor Jacuzzi and the SeaXplorer signature bow-point observation lounge.

Enrique Tintore, Damen Yachting’s SeaXplorer Design Manager, said: “Welcoming the fresh sea breeze and offering shaded vistas, the whole aft of Pink Shadow is a beautiful and inspiring space to experience the world. But the experience is not just about amazing views; it’s also about enjoying the ultimate adventure on land and at sea with the help of her many toys.”

Pink Shadow’s arsenal of toys includes two large multi-role tenders, road and off-road vehicles, and motorcycles. Due to an ice class hull and 30 days’ oceangoing autonomy, Pink Shadow can safely sail to many remote destinations often unreachable for other vessels, while wastewater tanks enable the yacht to access zero-discharge zones of outstanding natural beauty.

The owner selected UK-based Design Unlimited for the interior and contributed personally to a custom configuration in keeping with the SeaXplorer’s explorer spirit.

Mark Tucker, Creative Director of Design Unlimited, said: “When a discerning owner presents us with a very distinctive vision, it poses a new and exciting challenge. The SeaXplorer 58 provided the perfect platform for this endeavour, offering ample spaces and volume to bring ideas to life. With her considerable gross tonnage, there’s a variety of areas to enjoy both living and leisure.”

Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific’s listings in Southeast Asia include several beautifully restored, history-rich ‘classics’.

DoubleYou

Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific’s brokerage listings include a selection of classic yachts for sale including a Cheoy Lee motor yacht that belonged to American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, a 1968 aluminium sailboat that has completed multiple circumnavigations, and a 94ft Island Gypsy launched in 1979 by Kong & Halvorsen.

“Northrop & Johnson lists superyachts of all ages, but buyers of pre-loved ‘classic’ yachts are attracted by their timeless style and enduring craftsmanship,” says Martin Holmes, General Manager of Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific and Lee Marine, which holds the regional licence for the international brokerage.

DoubleYou

“Yachts like DoubleYou, Firebird and Thea are also good value, as they’ve benefited from extensive and often expensive refits and upgrading. Steeped in adventure and global exploration, each yacht has a unique story and invites a new owner to pen their own unforgettable chapter.”

DoubleYou is the only Expedition 90 built by Cheoy Lee and now based in Phuket with an asking price of US$2,700,000. Designed by Tom Fexas and launched in 1999, the 158GT motor yacht was named Continental Drifter II when owned by Buffett.

DoubleYou

After several years cruising around Southeast Asia, in 2020 she completed a refit in Indonesia focused on the saloon, skylounge, bridge and guest cabins, with white timber flooring and panelling creating a Hamptons beach house vibe elevated by tasteful furnishings and striking artwork.

The lower deck has two full-beam suites, two twins (one with an additional Pullman berth), and two crew cabins.

DoubleYou

With twin Caterpillar 3406 diesel engines and an 18,000-litre fuel capacity, she has a top speed of 14 knots, cruises at 11 and boasts an extensive range of 4,300nm. Tenders include a 15ft Boston Whaler, 13ft Zodiac and 10ft crew tender, while toys include wakeboards, waterskis and gear for diving, deep-sea fishing and snorkelling.

Northrop & Johnson’s brokerage listings also include the 1968 Firebird, which had an asking price of US$449,000 as of late June.

Firebird

Commissioned by the Timken family and named after The Firebird ballet by Stravinsky, the 84ft ketch was the world’s largest aluminium sailboat when she was launched in the US at the Palmer Johnson shipyard in Wisconsin.

In her 65 years afloat, she has circumnavigated the globe three times including voyages to the Antarctic and Arctic regions, and even became the subject of an eponymous novel in 2020. She spent the last part of the 20th century in the Virgin Islands before moving to Australia in 2009 and undergoing a US$1 million-plus refit.

Firebird

Firebird’s current home is in Phuket, where she was beautifully reappointed in golden Burmese teak by Teak Timber. The new-look interior offers an elegant, 1960s feel and there’s even a daybed in the saloon, while a wood-burning stove is provided for cruising in the higher latitudes. There are three guest cabins, including a master with a private staircase.

Modernisations also include a Raymarine navigation system with autopilot, updated networking, LiFePo batteries, Kohler genset and Victron inverter/solar systems for true off-the-grid independence.

Thea, priced at US$2,495,000, is a 94ft Island Gypsy launched in 1979 by Kong & Halvorsen, a joint venture set up in Hong Kong between Australian builder Halvorsen and Joseph Kong.

Thea

After being sold to the current owners, an architect and interior designer, Thea underwent a 2012-14 rebuild that included a 2m extension of her wooden hull, which boasts an exceptional thickness of 4.8cm throughout.

This year, she completed another extensive refit, this time in Satun province in southern Thailand. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3408 engines, Thea can reach 13 knots and cruises at 10 knots, while her 21,000-litre fuel capacity ensures impressive range.

Thea

The main deck includes a roomy aft cockpit, large saloon, separate dining area forward and a galley with a swing hatch to the dining room and dumb waiter to the wheelhouse on the flybridge. The flybridge also includes an aft-facing stateroom with panoramic views and private aft deck, plus two cranes and tender storage.

The lower deck includes the master stateroom aft and two more en-suite guest cabins, as well as accommodation for three crew in a captain’s cabin and bunk cabin. Thea is currently in Langkawi but could relocate to Phuket in November.

The German shipyard has delivered the 118m Liva°, the largest yacht it has built since it was founded in 1907.

Abeking & Rasmussen, Liva°, 118, metres, German, shipyard, 1907, Joseph Dirand Architecture, helicopter pad, black hull

Abeking & Rasmussen has delivered the 118.2m Liva°, notable for its black hull and super-clean exterior and interior design by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris. Featuring accommodation for 12 guests and 33 crew, the 388ft, 5,054GT superyacht has a fully certified helicopter pad on the sky deck and is the largest yacht built by the German shipyard, which was founded in 1907.

Matthias Hellmann, CEO of Abeking & Rasmussen, said: “The delivery of this magnificent superyacht marks a defining moment for our company, and I can confidently say we’ve once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht. By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we’ve created a yacht that sets new industry standards and delights our discerning clientele.”

Cornelsen & Partner project managed the construction process on behalf of the owner, while Abeking & Rasmussen admitted it “was a huge challenge for the shipyard to implement all technical necessities to be as invisible as possible to strictly follow the challenging aesthetic design intent”.

To maintain the elegant black silhouette, traditional anchor pockets are replaced by underwater anchors on the keel. Challenging technical aspects included the construction of a lower-deck garage fitting a 16m day tender, while the second tender garage forward on the main deck accommodates three boats, a seven-passenger Triton submersible, bicycles, water toys and dive equipment.

Abeking & Rasmussen, Liva°, 118, metres, German, shipyard, 1907, Joseph Dirand Architecture, helicopter pad, black hull

Joseph Dirand said: “I wanted this boat to be timeless, elegant, pure, thine, classic, contemporary with a large amount of outdoor space to be immersive with the surround landscape. This is exactly what I see when I look at it. The black hull is really spectacular and looks completely monolithic.

“I’ve been obsessed by this project and it’s the opportunity of my life to design a boat like this. I’m happy that everyone is realising why all those details were so important to get to this result. It’s my turn to thank the shipyard for being such a great partner in the realisation of this dream.”

Standout features include the Neptune Lounge, where guests have an underwater view through a window measuring 3.4m by 1.3m. For an exceptional above-water observation experience, the crow’s nest at the foot of the mast offers a privileged vantage point, while other inviting outdoor areas include a forward sun deck with a round sofa and large marble-clad fireplace.

The main deck includes a 12m by 4m pool with a floor capable of being elevated to the upper level and adorned with liquid marble – creating an illusion reminiscent of the sea’s surface – while marble also envelops the pool walls and surroundings.

The 54th Southampton International Boat Show from September 15-24 is set to feature over 600 exhibitors and more than 300 boats in Europe’s largest temporary, purpose-built show marina, which is set up beside Mayflower Park.

According to show organisers, the UK’s biggest boat show includes over 70 boats making their world or UK debuts including new models from leading local builders Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline.

Sean Robertson, Sunseeker’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We return this September to Southampton for the 54th edition of the show with a fantastic line-up including two of our most recent launches – the spectacular Superhawk 55 and 75 Sport Yacht. We have models from across our range on display across the 10-day event, offering a fantastic showcase for our guests.”

Princess will have a seven-strong line-up headed by the S72, following its world premiere at Boot Dusseldorf. The Plymouth builder’s display also includes a second S Class model, the S62, along with the F65, F50 and F45 from its F Class of flybridge models, plus the V40 and V50 cruisers.

Simon Clare, Marketing Director of Princess, said: “We’re delighted to have such a strong line-up once again at the Southampton International Boat Show, especially the new S72. We know this exciting addition to our S Class range will be a significant draw at the show for both our UK and international clients.”

Fairline, based inland in Oundle, is staging the world premiere of its much-anticipated Squadron 58, the first sub-80ft motor yacht from a British builder to include large, hydraulically powered balconies on both sides, while other highlights include an innovative bathing platform that doubles in size. The builder will also show the F//Line 33, Targa 45 Open and Targa 45 GT.

The beach club offers unrivalled outdoor living space for a yacht of this size and gives owners the feel of a yacht far larger without the associated ownership costs.”

French builder Prestige will show its new 690, X60 and M48, the first model from its M-Line of multihulls. Jeanneau, also part of Groupe Beneteau, will display its DB/43 luxury day boat as well as models from its Cap Camarat and Merry Fisher lines, while fellow French yard Fountaine Pajot will show its MY4.S sedan-style powercat.

Day boat builders eyeing Asia: Part 2

As the luxury day boat market continues to grow internationally, more shipyards across Europe are looking to increase their presence in key markets in this region.

Solaris Power 44 Open

Italy’s other leading day boat builders include Solaris Power – also based in Forli – whose Open models include the 40, 44, 48 and upcoming 52 and 60, while it also produces Lobster and Flybridge series. Key Largo, owned by Bergamo-based Sessa Marine, produces outboard (24, 27, 34, 40) and inboard (24, 27, 34) lines.

Key Largo 34

In Napoli, Fiart focuses on open boats with its Seawalker models (35, 39, 43) and the P54 it debuted at last year’s Genoa International Boat Show, while Apreamare builds the distinctive Gozzo 35 and 45.

Fiart P54

Just northwest of Napoli, Evo’s open day boats include the R4 (43ft) in three versions and super-transformer R6 (58ft). Earlier this year, the young company founded in 2014 announced the sale of four R4 units to the Middle East through dealer Evo Yachts Dubai.

Other Italian builders in the sector include Sardinia-based Maori Yacht, while Wider is moving in with its Wilder 60 launching this summer. Italia Yachts has developed an open design for its upcoming IY 43, the sailing yacht builder’s first powerboat.

Sacs Rebel 47

In Italy, RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) and ‘maxi’ RIBs form a sub-sector of luxury day boats. Leading brands include Sacs (1989), which builds Rebel (40, 47, 55) and Strider (23ft-59ft) lines, and is represented by Boat Lagoon Yachting in Southeast Asia.

Pirelli 42

Sister company TecnoRib (2005) produces Pirelli walkarounds (30, 35, 42, 50), while Anvera (2002) builds 42, 48 and 58 models. Founded in 1961, Nuova Jolly includes Thailand-based Asia Global Yachting among its dealers.

Lomac GranTurismo 12.0

Other historic RIB builders include Lomac (1960), which debuted the GranTurismo 12.0 at Boot Dusseldorf in January and will premiere the Turismo 9.5 and upgraded 45ft flagship GranTurismo 14.0 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 7-12).

In the Netherlands, leading day boat brands include Wajer, founded in 1992 and whose models include the 46-knot 38, new 44, 55 and flagship 77, which reaches 37 knots and includes Tom Brady among its buyers.

Day boats, Solaris, Fiart, Evo, Key Largo, Wajer, Tesoro, Sacs, Rebel, Lomac, Pirelli, Nimbus, Axopar, Saxdor

Wajer 55S

Earlier this year, Bekkers released its first yacht, the Azur 45HT, which will debut at Cannes in September, while Flynt is developing the 956 Nova, a Vripack-designed 31-footer expected to top 48 knots with twin 350hp inboards.

Frauscher, the iconic Austrian brand founded in 1927, builds motor boats from the 747 Mirage (24ft 6in) to the 1414 Demon (46ft), along with electric boats from the 610 San Remo (20ft) to the Frauscher x Porsche Fantom Air (28ft) set to debut in 2024.

In the UK, Sunseeker and Fairline – both founded in the 1960s – have targeted different ends of the market with their Superhawk 55 and F//Line 33 respectively, while other storied British builders focused on open designs include Hunton (1979) and Fletcher (1960), which is developing its first new model in over two decades, the F23 bowrider, with an electric edition targeted for late 2024.

Day boats, Solaris, Fiart, Evo, Key Largo, Wajer, Tesoro, Sacs, Rebel, Lomac, Pirelli, Nimbus, Axopar, Saxdor

Tesoro 40

Spanish builders include De Antonio, whose models range from the D28 to D50, while the newer Tesoro brand offers its T-38, T-40 and upcoming T-55 in inboard or outboard versions, with dealers including The Yacht Sales Co in Asia-Pacific.

In Germany, SAY Carbon Yachts has entered the market with its low-emission, carbon-built 29, 29 E (electric) and 42 models, with the 52 in production. The company was founded by CEO Karl Wagner, a carbon specialist whose background includes two decades developing Carbo Tech into one of the automobile industry’s largest producers of carbon-fibre-reinforced components, working with the likes of Porsche, Aston Martin and McLaren.

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE

After day boat pioneer Fjord was founded in Arendal on Norway’s south coast in 1960, eight years later Swedish builder Nimbus was established in Gothenburg, 135nm to the east. Part of the eight brand Nimbus Group, which recorded US$160 million in sales for 2022, Nimbus has long been Sweden’s most popular boat builder and was associated with tennis star Bjorn Borg in the 1980s.

Nimbus T11

Another leader in the historic and recent waves of Scandinavian boat builders with global appeal, Nimbus continues to build rock-solid, multi-functional boats ranging from 26-49ft across four lines: Tender, Day Cruisers, Commuter and Coupe Cruisers, the latter two featuring enclosed designs.

Its Tender line of walkarounds features the T8 (26ft), T9 (31ft) and T11 (41ft) – which can all be fitted with a T-top – while Day Cruisers include the 305 Drophead (33ft), Weekender 9 (31ft) and newly launched Weekender 11 (41ft), which will premiere at Cannes in September.

Asiamarine represents Nimbus in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and has sold the T8, T9 and T11 (Review, Issue 65) across the region. The dealer represents Fraser in multiple markets

and has sold several Nimbus models to owners of superyachts.

“Nimbus boats are not cheap, but they’re pricey for the right reason because they’re so strong, seaworthy and safe. I now consider Nimbus the ‘last boat’ that clients buy, after they’ve tried other brands,” says Eric Noyel, founder and CEO of Asiamarine, who owns a T11 in Thailand.

Day boats, Solaris, Fiart, Evo, Key Largo, Wajer, Tesoro, Sacs, Rebel, Lomac, Pirelli, Nimbus, Axopar, Saxdor

Nimbus T11 and W9

“Each time I use mine, I’m still finding out more about the boat, how it has everything you need. Nimbus is building on 45 years of feedback from clients, so the designs are so practical, with everything you need in the right place. The more I use it, the more I admire it.”

Asiamarine’s portfolio also includes Galeon and Swan, who are targeting the day boat market with the dynamic, multi-functional GTO series and elegant Shadow/Overshadow models respectively.

“We see more interest in day boats in Southeast Asia than Hong Kong, although overall I think the market is still relatively small for these types of boats compared to enclosed and flybridge yachts,” Noyel says.

In neighbouring Finland, Axopar has helped popularise Scandinavian-style motor boats since displaying its first model at the 2014 Helsinki International Boat Show, having been co-founded by Jan-Erik Viitala and Sakari Mattila, who has since left and set up Saxdor.

Day boats, Solaris, Fiart, Evo, Key Largo, Wajer, Tesoro, Sacs, Rebel, Lomac, Pirelli, Nimbus, Axopar, Saxdor

Axopar 37 ST

Axopar builds its adventure-themed boats in Poland and has produced over 5,000 in less than a decade. It currently offers multiple designs across its 22, 25, 28 and 37 models, plus the 45 XC Cross Cabin.

Its dealers in Asia include Thailand-based Derani Yachts, which organised five Axopars for last December’s Kata Rocks Poker Run in Phuket, while Europa Yachts in the Philippines and Amal Yachting in Taiwan are also among dealers in Asia.

Axopar is also behind Brabus Marine, which was created in 2017 with German company Brabus, a specialist in ‘aftermarket tuning’ and special editions of cars, especially Mercedes-Benz models.

Brabus Marine offers Axopar 25, 28 and 37 models (named Brabus Shadow 300, 500 and 900) with upgraded horsepower and in a wide variety of colours and designs, often military-inspired such as Blacks Ops and Stealth Green. It appointed Derani as a dealer last year.

Saxdor has further strengthened the Scandinavian offering of day boats since it was set up in 2019. Ranging from 20ft-40ft and built in Poland, models include the 200, 205, 270 (GTO, GT), 320 (GTO, GTC) and upcoming 400 (GTO, GTC), all open or with cover options apart from the enclosed GTC editions.

Day boats, Solaris, Fiart, Evo, Key Largo, Wajer, Tesoro, Sacs, Rebel, Lomac, Pirelli, Nimbus, Axopar, Saxdor

Saxdor 320 GTO

Its dealers include Motor Field and Pattaya Boat Club in Thailand, Xtreme Machines in Singapore and Pacific Leisure Boat in Hong Kong and mainland China, which has already brought in the 200, 320 GTO and 320 GTC models, with multiple 270s arriving in the summer.

It may still be early days for luxury day boats in this region, where Southeast Asia’s year-round warm weather could prove more welcoming to open designs than East Asia’s northern markets.

However, NextWave, for one, is a believer in the sector, while emphasising that clients across the region will continue to prioritise quality, design and detailing over price.

“The luxury day boat sector has experienced significant growth in recent years because of owners increasingly seeking the freedom to cruise without requiring a crew or with only a minimal crew on board,” co-founder Frankie Chau says.

“Boat builders in this sector are competing on factors such as exterior styling, craftsmanship in luxurious interior details and performance, all of which are highly valued by buyers in this market segment.”
