Japan buyer among early sales for new Swan 58 model, which will launch this summer and sit at the heart of the five-model Swan Yachts range.

A Japan-based owner has bought hull number two of the upcoming Swan 58, with the first hull expected to launch in Finland by the end of June. The model’s world premiere is scheduled for the 52nd Boot Dusseldorf in January 2021.

The first Swan 58 will be launched in northern Finland in early summer

Nautor’s Swan, which announced a 50 per cent growth in turnover for 2019, revealed details of the yacht in January. Six units had been sold by late February.

The Swan 58 is the first of that name ever produced by the historic Finnish yard, founded in 1966. In contrast, the 48 launched last year was the third model of the same name and the second designed by the legendary German Frers, who designed the 58 and all other models in the current Swan Yachts and Maxi Swan ranges.

Frers, whose former Swan designs
include the similarly-sized 56 and 57 (second version), created the 58 as a fast bluewater cruiser that can be comfortably sailed by a couple, with a performance package as an option.

The Swan 58 features an owner suite forward and two guest cabins aft

Below deck the interior has a forward owner stateroom with en-suite bathroom and two aft cabins with en-suites. Options include a fourth cabin midships for guests or crew and a crew cabin in the forepeak.

A new cockpit design includes twin tables that can connect to form a 10-seat dining table or separately be converted into sunbeds. The Swan 58 joins the 48, 54, 65 and 78 in the Swan Yachts range, while the builder’s other lines comprise Maxi Swan Yachts (98, 120) and ClubSwan Yachts (36, 50, 125).

readyviewed Swan staged the world premiere of the ClubSwan 36 at Dusseldorf in January , while last year’s premieres included the Swan 65 at Dusseldorf and the Swan 48 at Cannes.

“Sanlorenzo is becoming a dominant force in Asia and we are delighted with our new Southeast Asia flagship office in Singapore. We are confident that when borders reopen, we will see the same growth in this area. This year will mark a record number of Sanlorenzo deliveries in Asia and several yachts are already under construction for the spring and summer 2021.”

Nautor’s Swan is building five new-generation maxi-yachts in northern Finland, with the Swan 98 the first on show in September.

Nautor’s Swan is currently building five maxi superyachts that will launch a new era for the Finnish builder, starting with the world premiere of the Swan 98 at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, scheduled for September 23-26.

The Swan 98 world premiere is scheduled for the Monaco Yacht Show

Three units have already been sold and the first will hit the water in the summer outside the BTC (Boat Technology Centre) in Pietarsaari, northern Finland, where construction continues year-round despite the snow season typically lasting from November to May.

A ClubSwan 125, designed to break many long-standing world records, is also under construction and set to launch in the autumn, while the first Swan 120 is expected to launch in early summer next year.

Maxi Swan (98, 120) is one of the yard’s three ranges along with Swan Yachts (48, 54, 58, 65, 78) and ClubSwan (36, 50, 125), the latter group all designed by Argentine Juan Kouyoumdjian, 49.

German Frers, also from Argentina, has worked with the Finnish yard since 1981 and the legendary 78-year-old designer is behind the 98 and 120, as well as the entire Swan Yachts line from 48-78ft.

The 98’s hull and deck are built using epoxy Sprint pre-preg carbon-fibre interior, with exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam, providing structural rigidity and light weight.

The 30m model features two layouts – owner aft and owner forward, each with three additional guest cabins – and four different interior moods.

Misa Poggi has developed of the three themes featuring Italian textiles and leathers – Timeless Classical White, Traditional Navy and Wine Cowes. Spirit of Finland, a Nordic-inspired mood, has been created by the shipyard’s interior department.

Hull one has an owner-aft layout and a warm Traditional Navy mood featuring furniture and floorboards in dark oak with a satin finish, as well as cognac-coloured leather panelling in the saloon.

Giovanni Pomati, Group CEO, said: “Nautor’s Swan is excited to introduce the new era of Maxi Swan with the Swan 98 to the world in September. She is a modern masterpiece of design and construction, the perfect blend of performance, elegance and luxury. She is destined to become a timeless superyacht.”

Since 1966, Swan has built more than 2,000 yachts between 36-131ft. Its 2019 sales were split between North Europe and Russia (42 per cent), Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa (38 per cent), Asia-Pacific (10 per cent) and Americas (10 per cent). A new Swan 48 was recently delivered to Japan.

Sanlorenzo has announced impressive pre-sales of its new aluminium-built 44Alloy, which is scheduled to premiere in September.

Sanlorenzo has announced five pre-sales of its new 44Alloy, which is scheduled to make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The Italian builder said all five units were under construction. The yacht has accommodation for 10 guests and nine crew.

Bernardo Zuccon designed the exterior of the Sanlorenzo 44Alloy

Built of aluminium, the 44.5m fast displacement model is a successor of the 40Alloy, the 40m aluminium model, which sold 10 units and features fold-out terraces in the owner’s zone and gullwing doors on the bridge.

The 44Alloy has been designed with the Zuccon International Project studio, which has worked on many of Sanlorenzo’s models. Bernardo Zuccon led the design of the external lines and the concept of the layout.

The owner’s suite is among the yacht’s focal points and features 145sqm of living area divided into three levels, with indoor and outdoor zones, a layout “never seen before on a superyacht of this size” according to Sanlorenzo.

Asiamarine sales confirm that Galeon motor yachts from Poland continue to prove popular in Asia, while Turkey’s Numarine hires Karl Gilding.

Asiamarine has announced that it sold seven Galeon motor yachts in Asia in 2019, a strong return for the regional dealership. Galeon, which has two facilities in Gdansk, has grown to become one of the world’s leading builders of luxury motor yachts in its sector (30-78ft), especially after MarineMax became its dealer in the Americas in 2016, helping establish the Polish brand as a huge seller in the US.

Asiamarine’s Galeon sales last year included a 640

Asiamarine’s sales of Galeons into Hong Kong and Southeast Asia last year included a 640, a model that debuted in 2018 and built
on the iconic 500 model, also deploying drop-down sides – increasing its beam to 7.4m – and a portside bar.

The 640’s features include an innovative front window passage that allows direct central access from the saloon to the foredeck, an area that features two folding sofas with integrated tables that can also be converted into a large sun lounger.

The 500 Fly continued to prove popular in Asia, with Asiamarine selling another three units of the model that helped Galeon garner a global reputation. The 500 won multiple awards for its fold-down sides, open bar and a cockpit bench that revolves 180 degrees to allow guests the option of facing forward or aft.

Galeon’s new generation of yachts includes the 680 Fly

Asiamarine also sold 300, 360 and 420 models in 2019, but is now looking ahead to promoting the fourth generation of Galeon motor yachts, including the upcoming 400 Fly, the smallest model to offer the innovative ‘beach mode’ innovations first shown on the 500. The fourth generation also includes the 680 Fly, which features lightweight carbon-fibre and a flexible foredeck that can be transformed into a seating area at the touch of a button.

Asiamarine, which has its headquarters in Hong Kong and offices in Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam, is also a dealer for Turkey’s Numarine and American builders Hatteras and Wellcraft.

Numarine, which builds motor yachts from 62-148ft, has appointed Karl Gilding as its business development consultant, with responsibility for enhancing and growing the Turkish builder’s existing worldwide dealer network.

Karl Gilding will help Turkey’s Numarine with its dealer network

Gilding, whose mission is to support existing dealers and attract new ones, has attended international boat shows for 43 years in his roles with Fairline, Sunseeker and Sea Ray, as a retail dealer, yacht consultant and international dealer manager.

His latest role as one of the directors responsible for the rebirth of Fairline saw him drive sales at the newly formed company to 186 units in three years as Business Development Director. Gilding retired from full-time work last April to pursue personal investment projects

Asiamarine’s other services include charter, pre-owned yachts and yacht management.

Monaco Yacht Show’s World Premieres: Superyacht Showdown

Monaco Yacht Show’s World Premieres: Superyacht Showdown

SHARE

Yacht Style’s Issue 49 highlights a selection of the most exciting new models on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

The Monaco Yacht Show is the place to see world premieres of superyachts, as over a third of the 125 on display this year are appearing at an international boat show for the first time.

Riva’s 50m Race (pictured in Venice) is the Italian yard’s biggest-ever build - by quite some margin

Riva’s 50m Race is the Italian yard’s biggest-ever build, by quite some margin

At 164ft in length, Riva’s 50m Race is the smallest yacht in our superyacht selection and the cover star of Yacht Style Issue 49. Designed in collaboration with Officina Italian design, the sub-500GT build is dwarfed by the likes of Lurssen’s 111m Tis, which at 4,500 GT, is about nine times the volume of Riva’s new flagship.

readyviewed Yet, Race is arguably Riva’s greatest-ever achievement , more than three times heavier than the company’s previous flagship, the 110’ Dolcevita. And judging by the latter’s premiere at Cannes last year, Race’s elegant styling could prove a real head-turner in Port Hercules and a must-see for admirers of the historic builder that still builds 8m open boats.

In contrast, most of the other 50m-plus yachts exhibiting at Monaco are built by shipyards that exclusively build megayachts.

readyviewed Italy’s Benetti is arguably the world leader in superyacht production and is now also a major player in what it describes as the ‘gigayacht’ sector, having launched three models over 100m at the end of last year and beginning of 2019.

The 63m Metis is Benetti’s biggest yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show

Monaco marks the world premiere of the 63m, five-deck Metis, which was custom built for a German owner, has a displacement of 1,100 tonnes and is the biggest Benetti on display. Italian Giorgio M. Cassetta, a long-time Benetti collaborator, designed the exterior, including the distinct vertical bow.

The interiors are a collaboration between German studio Birgit Otte Interior and London-based Bannenberg & Rowell, directed by Dickie Bannenberg and Simon Rowell.

Exciting features include the 160sqm-plus owner’s suite, which features a lounge and 180-degree views through full-height glazed surfaces across the private bow deck, while a custom-built gym on the fly deck and a touch-and-go helipad are among eye-catching features. There are seven cabins for up to 13 guests, plus accommodation for 13 crew.

Sanlorenzo’s major world premiere is the 64Steel Attila, the Italian builder’s biggest-ever yacht, with an exterior designed by Officina Italiana Design and interior by Francesco Paszkowski Design.

Custom built for an Argentine owner, Sanlorenzo’s 64Steel Attila features an exterior by Officina Italiana and an interior by Francesco Paszkowski

Sanlorenzo’s 64Steel Attila features an exterior by Officina Italiana

Built for an Argentine entrepreneur who had a Sanlorenzo 46Steel delivered in 2012, the new 1,600GRT Attila measures 64.25m in length and has a maximum beam of 13m, compared to Metis’s 10.5m. She has accommodation for 12 guests and 18 crew. Attila includes a 250sqm private owner’s deck, which has a large whirlpool bath in the bow, while the full-beam VIP suite and four guest rooms are on the main deck.

Another distinctive zone is the aft area of the main deck, where a pool and dining area is designed to integrate with the beach club below, which has a sauna, hammam, massage room and gym, right at the waterline. With the bow mirror and the side platforms open, the beach club covers 78sqm.

The yacht has a touch-and-go helipad at the bow, can house two 10m-plus tenders over 10m and there’s even a climate-controlled wine cellar with a capacity of up to 500 bottles.

Dutch shipyard Amels is staging the world premiere of the 67.1m Aurora Borealis, which is the first completed Amels 220, a Limited Editions model with a Tim Heywood exterior and Winch Design interior that has further orders in build.

The 1,518GT yacht features accommodation for up to 14 guests in seven suites, including an owner’s suite on the main deck and two VIP suites on the bridge deck that feature full-height French balcony windows. The family-friendly sun deck has a seven-person jacuzzi and air-conditioned sky lounge.

Our short selection of superyacht world premieres wraps up with three models around the 79-80m mark. CRN’s custom-designed M/Y 135 was still known as such in August, when the 79m, five-deck yacht was delivered to her owner.

The Italian yard renewed its partnership with Zuccon International Project for the external lines, while Laura Sessa designed the interiors of a yacht that features six guests cabins for 12, plus accommodation for up to 39 crew. The yacht is recognised as CRN’s second-biggest build in terms of length, behind the 80m Chopi Chopi, a 2013 launch.

Like Riva and Sanlorenzo, fellow Italian builder Columbus Yachts is exhibiting its largest-ever build at Monaco. Built in 27 months, the 79.5m Dragon has six decks, a 13m beam and an internal volume of almost 2,300GT. Hydro Tec Studio managed the exterior and naval architecture, while Francesco Guida was responsible for the interiors.

The main deck features a large saloon and a dining area with a custom-made 14-seater table by Giorgetti with a Roman travertine top, maple edges and leather legs. Forward are the VIP suite and four guest cabins.

The fourth deck is exclusively reserved for the owner and includes a 110sqm bedroom with 180-degree views, a private foredeck, Roman The bridge deck features a 50sqm wellness area, while the sun deck has a 7m-long pool about 12m above sea level.

Lower-deck highlights include a 200sqm beach club with a bar, sauna and Turkish bath, as well as a garage for 7m and 9.5m tenders. Dragon also has a helicopter landing platform, with three jet-skis housed underneath.

Meanwhile, the 79.95m Excellence by German builder Abeking & Rasmussen is among the most jaw-dropping designs at Monaco due to an almost space-age exterior by UK’s Winch Design, which also handled the interior.

The radical exterior lines include a streamlined reverse bow that could itself be one of the stars of the show along with the huge glass panels in the unique superstructure, which itself features a series of circular designs not usually seen on superyachts. Features include a pool, sprawling beach club, jacuzzi and impressive limousine tenders.

Yet this 79-80m trio are only hovering around the edges of
the show’s top 10 longest yachts, a heady collection that features some returning heroes and a few world premieres, including the aforementioned Tis. For more details on this stunning 364-footer by Lurssen, see https://www.luxuo.com/motoring/yachting/lurssen-111m-tis-yacht-style-review.html

Pershing 140 Marks Milestone for Starship Yachts’ Edwin Ho

Pershing 140 Marks Milestone for Starship Yachts’ Edwin Ho

The Pershing 140 sold to a Hong Kong owner is another significant chapter in the life of Starship Yachts founder Edwin Ho.

When Pershing’s latest flagship, the stunning Hong Kong-owned Pershing 140, made her debut in Monaco in late May, another magic milestone was chalked up by one of Asia’s most successful boat dealers, Edwin Ho of Starship Yachts.

The Hong Kong-owned Pershing 140 was shown at the Monaco Grand Prix in late May

Only two years ago, readyviewed Riva, another Ferretti Group brand , broke with tradition when it staged the world premiere of the 100’ Corsaro at Aberdeen Marina Club in Hong Kong, instead of in Europe or America.

Edwin was behind that sale too, continuing his close association with Italy, which is by far the world’s biggest boat-building country, and renowned for the super styling and performance of its power vessels.

His initial interest was Italversil, when the yard began construction of small superyachts, selling 80 and 83 models on the China Coast. Dominators built at Fano followed, including one for a Dalian client, which taught him about the exigencies of bleak winters spent on buoys in those North China waters, and the need for boat manuals translated from Italian into Chinese characters.

He exhibited at the first Penang Boat Show in Malaysia 25 years ago, as the later-abandoned Penang Yacht Club was being built in Georgetown, and at the first China Boat Show in Shanghai in 1996, held in the basement of Russian-built exhibition halls off Nanjing Road.

Edwin pioneered modern pleasure boat sales and activities in China, delivering the first Ferretti Group model, a Pershing 45, to Haikou in Hainan. He realised that pleasure boating for many people on the mainland had to begin with smaller craft, so he signed up to represent Italy’s leading producer of sports and runabout vessels, Cranchi, situated on the lovely lakes north of Milan.

Fishing boats built by ARS Monaco, big Maioras from FIPA,
and a custom cruiser for the President of the Maldives were among other deliveries, as his separate involvement with the Ferretti Group began to grow, starting with Pershing, then run by the inimitable Tilli Antonelli, originally a yachtie who survived the disastrous 1979 Fastnet Race, plus designer Fulvio de Simoni, and associate Nada Serafini, who still helms Pershing today.

readyviewed Ferretti Group, which is now backed by considerable Chinese equity , is one of the world’s largest pleasure boat builders, and apart from Ferretti Yachts, Pershing and Riva, it also includes Itama, Mochi Craft and dedicated superyacht builders CRN and Custom Line. Most of these yards are located near the eastern Adriatic Coast of Italy, south of Venice.

This obviously provides a suitable range for steadily increasing Asian sales and service by Starship Yachts, which is based in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, helped to some extent by the fact that Edwin hails from one of Asia’s most famous families.

Sir Robert Hotung, also known as Ho Kai Tung, the blue-eyed Eurasian comprador of leading British trading house Jardines and
an eminent businessman in his own right, was in the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s acknowledged as Hong Kong’s richest man and greatest philanthropist. His brother Ho Kai Fook was Edwin’s great grandfather.

When Sir Robert was knighted by King George V in the early 1900s, this side of the family decided to keep its surname as Hotung, as that was how the royal citation read.

Riva 100′ Corsaro’s world premiere was held at Aberdeen Marina Club in Hong Kong in 2017

Ho Kai Fook kept Ho, which according to one account derived from their Dutch Jewish father, Charles Henry Maurice Bosman, a director of the Hong Kong Hotel, Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf, and sometime Dutch Consul, who sold marine insurance to clients like Jardines. Bosman was pronounced in Cantonese Bo-Se-Man and that transliterated to Ho-Sze-Man.

Edwin conversely has been told that Bosman and wife Sze Tai’s descendants, when they needed a Chinese name, simply picked the first two letters of the Dutch coastal provinces known as Holland, hence Ho.

Ho Kai Fook, who seems to have followed the British bent of becoming a large-scale opium trader, sired Ho Sai Kwong, and he in turn produced the brothers Ernest Reginald Stewart Ho, Edwin’s dad, in 1913, and Stanley Ho Hung Sun in 1921.

Stanley is supremo of the Macau casino industry, now the world’s largest, having weathered many storms ashore and afloat. Daughter Pansy, like Stanley a boater, has recently taken over the reins, and her brother Lawrence has just bought out Australian casino billionaire James Packer – who this year is taking delivery of a Benetti 107m – from their Macau-based City of Dreams JV and other projects.

I’ve watched casino shows like Crazy Paris, a play on the raffish Crazy Horse theatre in the Champs Élysées district, with Ernest and Edwin, and briefly produced a magazine called Macau Voyager for the brothers, as well as staying many times at their Lisboa Hotel. The impression has always been that they were very much partners.

Some say it was Ernest who really got the casino ball rolling, but that’s conjecture. He later retired to a house on the Gold Coast in Australia, near one I owned at Sanctuary Cove. The Hos would fly down on the family jet to see him as his health waned. He passed away in November 1998, shortly before Macau officially reverted back to China, on a “one country, two systems” basis, after nearly 450 years of Portuguese occupation.

Other interesting aspects of the Ho family tree include the fact that Edwin’s Aunt Susie married Teddy Yip, the first and only Chinese to have Formula 1 and Indy 500 teams, and whose Theodore Racing remains a mainstay of the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix.

readyviewed A more distant cousin was the great kung fu fighter Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 in odd circumstances, as did his Hollywood actor son Brandon 20 years later.

The young Edwin, born in Hong Kong, thus had a somewhat privileged upbringing, but these were large families, and it was still every guy and gal for themselves.

Edwin with sons Jamie, 24, and Dominic, 11, who is into go-karts and already eyeing Theodore Racing’s Formula cars

His mum Diana Wong Yuk Ying happily had a penchant for the South of France, staying at Juan Les Pins near Cannes, so apart from Cantonese, spoken in Macau, Hong Kong and elsewhere in southern China, he was soon fairly fluent in French, and in the de rigeur business language English.

Schooling included sojourns at The Abbey near Ashurst Wood and East Grinstead in Sussex, England, where former PM Winston Churchill had his early education, and many Jardines-rival Swire schoolboys boarded. The local pubs were often full of Hong Kong people.

When the Hos decided to invest in a new casino venture in Paris in 1987, French-speaking Edwin was a natural choice, but there are some tough cookies in the casino industry, and having reappraised their fellow shareholders, the family later decided it would be prudent to withdraw.

A distinct upside, however, was that in Paris he met and married the beautiful Edith, who was studying there, daughter of Brazilian diplomat Jayme De Souza Gomes and a Danish Baroness, Edith Olivarius, herself a Danish envoy.

The European side of the Hos was thus further reinforced. They have three children, Jamie, 24, Pamela, 21, and Dominic 11, who was heavily into rugby at first but now can’t be separated from his go-kart, and is a fan of Theodore Racing, an outfit that Starship Yachts supports in co-promotions.

Daughter Pamela Ho, 21, helps with the Starship Yachts-Theodore Racing co-promotion at the Macau Grand Prix

Edith, meanwhile, has an art gallery at Tropicana Golf and Country Club Resort in Kuala Lumpur, where they moved from Coloane in Macau to bring up the children, and she is an accomplished interior designer and decorator, handling a prestigious contract for the latest Pershing 140.

After Paris, Edwin next decided to open a restaurant at Port Camille Rayon, the attractive marina in Golfe Juan, just up the road from Juan Les Pins, and situated more broadly between Antibes and Cannes, Côte D’Azur cities where he would later buy apartments.

Because English was spoken at the restaurant, it was patronised by a more cosmopolitan marine clientele, including the multi-lingual Cannes-dwelling Munich-raised boat dealer Rudy Berglehner, who became a leading boat sales executive for the Italian FIPA group. FIPA is a strong force in the Italian yachting industry, with the well-known brands Maiora, AB Yachts and CBI Navi.

When Edwin decided to return to Asia, Rudy suggested they become business partners, and so began a decades-long friendship. Rudy was at the first China Boat Show in Shanghai in 1996 too. As visitors seemed more interested in acquiring paper pamphlets for resale rather than boats, one recalls he and Mike Simpson, another Western boat dealer, headed off to Shanghai’s antique shops instead, as both of them were collectors.

The well-connected Edwin had clients in Macau and elsewhere, including David Chow, who with son Donald runs the Legend casinos and development companies, plus Fisherman’s Wharf, site of Macau Yacht Shows.

Rendering of the Pershing 140 that will arrive in Hong Kong later this year

David first bought an Italversil 95 delivered in 2000, and has purchased other craft since, mostly kept at Aberdeen Marina Club. He has chartered superyachts in the South of France, where Edwin’s “local knowledge” has come in handy.

Willy Roberts, who bought the magazine Asia-Pacific Boating from me in 1999-2001, went to Genoa to sell Edwin and Rudy an advertising campaign. Forty-eight hours later he re-surfaced as owner of a Pershing 37. They were a persuasive duo.

One of their sport fishers appeared in the James Bond film GoldenEyeThe Man With The Golden Gun was also shot in the fire-ravaged and sunken liner Queen Elizabeth 1 and Bottoms Up Bar in Hong Kong, and in spectacular Phang Nga in Phuket.

The latest Pershing 140 would be a worthy latter-day James Bond steed too. Largest vessel that the yard has ever built, she has four engines that in sea trials achieved a highly impressive 40-plus knots, albeit burning a not-insubstantial amount of fuel in the process.

Six tons was shaved off the total weight of the yacht by load-lightening measures. We’re told she has a custom mahjong table “made in Italy”. Very cosmopolitan.

Maiden voyage in May was to the Monaco F1 Grand Prix, a streets event not unlike that of Macau. Arrival in Hong Kong is expected later this year. A separate boat review is scheduled. And so the most remarkable Ho and Starship Yachts saga continues.

Ferretti Group and Camper & Nicholsons have sold a Custom Line 120’ new build to an Asian client, with C&N appointed Project Manager for its construction

Ferretti Group and Camper & Nicholsons have announced the sale of a new Custom Line 120’ to an Asian client.

Ferretti Group sold the Custom Line 120′ new build in collaboration with Camper & Nicholsons

The yacht sold by the Ferretti Group Asia Pacific office is currently in production in Italy and will be delivered later this year.

Camper & Nicholsons, involved since the first stage of the deal, will continue to support the client through its New Build Division, which is Project Manager and Technical Surveyor for the yacht’s construction – the division’s fourth such appointment for Asian clients in three months.

The 120’ was unveiled to the public at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September along with Custom Line’s Navetta 42, one of Ferretti Group’s five world premieres at the show.

The 120’ is the first Custom Line planing yacht by Francesco Paszkowski Design, which created new designs for the hull shape. During construction, infusion techniques and the use of carbon will ensure a stronger build and lighter weight respectively.

The sleek, powerful profile features strong lines running from bow to stern, while the dark tinted windows, and metallic grey cockpit cover and hardtop give an aggressive, dynamic look.

Custom Line Navetta 42: A Work of Art from Ferretti Group

When it came time to build the Custom Line Navetta 42, the Ferretti Group was thinking big. And not just in terms of size, although the Navetta 42 is the largest Custom Line yacht yet and the first over 300GT. More importantly, it's what you do with that extra space that makes a yacht stand out in her class.

Solaris Brings Easy Sailing To Asia

Solaris Brings Easy Sailing To Asia

Solaris Yachts Asia Representative Enrico Zanella tells Yacht Style that Easy Sailing yachts are coming to this region and will help popularise the concept.

Solaris 44

What is an Easy Sailing Yacht ?

Basically, it’s a faster cruiser with semi-automatic systems – electric winches, furling boom, self-tacking jib and furled sails – that allow one person to manage a powerful sailing yacht in an easy way. It’s a much easier approach to sailing for beginners as they can use buttons and electric or hydraulic systems to manage the sails. It makes everything very easy.

A period of training is needed, but a beginner can quickly learn how to go out for a sail, swim in a bay and sail back. For longer journeys, you need more time and experience. Such a level can be achieved in two years with a proper programme of sailing, a proper method and the proper yacht. However, always remember to respect the sea and, “safety first”.

Q&A with Enrico Zanella On How Italy’s Solaris Yachts Brings Easy Sailing To Asia

Enrico Zanella

What’s A Faster Cruiser Sailing Yacht?

Firstly, it has a specifically designed hull. It’s a racer, with a lightweight but very strong structure due to its construction techniques. It has a powerful sail plan, personalised luxury interiors and eye-catching colours.

Speed is a basic pleasure of sailing. You want to be the fastest one in the water, so the sail plan is significantly more powerful than other yachts in the same category or of similar length. With an Easy Sailing yacht, you can manage the power of the sails by yourself.

Speed is a combination of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics and weight, factors that depend on the shipyard’s specific research, design, engineering and construction knowledge. Even safety is related to speed. In many situations, speed is the key to arriving at port, so even the inboard power unit is bigger than usual.

Lastly, you and everyone in the marina and at sea will admire the style of your yacht – the shapes, colours, lights, reflections and your personal touches. These all define a fast cruiser easy sailing yacht.

What’s The Proper Method?

For a beginner, the speed of learning is related to the training method. If an Easy Sailing yacht is the hardware, the training method is the software. In order to teach how to safely sail an Easy Sailing yacht, the proper method must adapt to the beginner’s schedule and ambitions.

Let me explain in another way. A beginner has a budget that allows them to own a fast cruiser easy sailing yacht and wants to learn how to sail. They want to sail out to sea with family and friends, swim in beautiful bays, maybe race, and enjoy some unique quality time. With the training method I developed, named The Art of Sailing, it’s possible in a reasonably short time to train a beginner to be able to sail out to sea, enjoy themselves and sail home. With an Easy  Sailing yacht and this training method, a beginner can make their dream become true.

How Does The Price Of A Fast Cruiser Compared To A Cruiser?

Higher or much higher. A fast cruiser is not built in a mass-production or industrialised way but in a very limited scale with very specialised labour. A fast cruiser is a semi-custom yacht that can have tailored requirements and touches, with long-haul capability. The value of a fast cruiser yacht is in the design and construction techniques, highest-quality materials and personalisation.

What About The Resale Value?

A semi-custom fast cruiser maintains a higher second-hand market value, and for a longer time, than a mass-production cruiser. Maintained properly, a semi-custom fast cruiser looks like new after five years.

Easy Sailing Yachts Are Seen In Europe, The Americas And Australia, But What About Asia?

I can talk about my experience. The Asian market is growing according to the local realities. All over Asia, sailing is perceived almost exclusively as regattas.

Most people still don’t know that sailing is more than racing. Sailing is also about the time spent with family and friends, quality time, sunsets, dressing elegantly in a refined atmosphere, delicious food, drinks and good music. Sailing has naturally good Feng shui and provides invaluable, relaxing quality time.

But something has changed in Hong Kong in the last two years. This perception is changing with some experienced Owners, that choose Solaris for these reasons, who are the best opinion leaders to inspire others to learn the amazing and rewarding Art of Sailing.

What Is Next For Solaris In Asia?

Next year, the first Solaris 47 EZC Easy Sailing in Asia will arrive in Hong Kong and is privately owned. The second Solaris will arrive in Hong Kong in the second part of 2019 and will be available for sea trials and charter, and participate in regattas. I’m sure many more people will enjoy the lifestyle after they experience this contemporary way of sailing.

Custom Line’s Navetta 33

31 July 2018 – Fresh out of the shipyard in Ancona, Italy, Custom Line launches its fifth Navetta 33 yacht which was custom-built for a North American yachtsman. Part of the prestigious Ferretti Group, Custom Line’s Navetta 33 took to the waters like a swan. This new masterpiece offers authentic refinement to the nth degree and with seductive interiors oozing sophistication and style, the owner’s yachting lifestyle just got sweeter.

This striking craft is also an extraordinary work of nautical engineering and has won so much praise from experts from near and afar. The new owner is “too excited to take it for a spin” on a Mediterranean cruise with his family before returning across the Atlantic.  America remains of crucial importance for Custom Line.

Navetta 33’s interiors are plush and sophisticated

Impossibly chic, Navetta 33 turns heads thanks to its exquisite lines and a painstaking attention to detail. The superyacht epitomises those values of seaworthiness, comfort, safety and customisation that have always been at the core of Custom Line’s DNA.

The fifth Navetta 33 is yet another fruit of joint efforts by the Product Strategy Committee – headed by Mr Piero Ferrari – Studio Zuccon International Project, which was responsible for the exterior design, and the Group’s Engineering Department, whose architects and designers crafted the tasteful interiors. Part of the craft’s noteworthy features include a hull with bulbous forward section, designed from scratch, which will provide seaworthiness and stability performance at the very top of its class. In addition, yacht owners and their guests can enjoy marvellous spaces across all four decks: from the wide-body master suite forward on the main deck, to the four guest cabins on the lower deck.

Navetta 33 – enjoy your dose of Vitamin D on the sundeck

The launch of the fifth unit of Navetta 33 comes at an exciting time for Custom Line and the Ancona Superyacht Yard, which in the space of a single month has seen the launches of the fifth Navetta 33, the fifth Navetta 37 and the first ever Navetta 42, the brand’s first mega yacht above 300 GT.

The event was held at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, a world-class ship-building facility that produces all the steel and aluminium mega-yachts for the CRN, Riva and Pershing brands, as well as the entire Custom Line fleet in composite. Among the vessels created here are the magnificent Navetta 28, the awesome Navetta 37 and the new flagship, Navetta 42, which is set to debut at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival as the largest Custom Line model ever built.
