SeaLink North Queensland and the Museum of Underwater Art offer an exclusive opportunity to engage with John Brewer Reef’s marine life and explore the Southern Hemisphere’s only underwater art installation
British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor created eight sculptures
SeaLink North Queensland and the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) are holding a special excursion to the MOUA ‘Ocean Sentinels’ installation at John Brewer Reef on Saturday, June 8, in honour of World Ocean Day.
The World Ocean Day tour will provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet and listen to four Ocean Sentinels, each a distinguished marine scientist and conservationist.
Passengers will journey on SeaLink’s state-of-the-art fast ferry, a modern and spacious air-conditioned catamaran, to enjoy the privilege of exploring the only underwater art installation in the southern hemisphere: eight sculptures of Ocean Sentinels, created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.

The sculptures blend human forms with marine elements, to represent the intersection of art and science amid the vibrant marine life of the John Brewer Reef.
The sculptures will evolve as marine life colonise the space
The surfaces of the sculptures are intentionally designed to attract marine organisms, allowing them to evolve over time as corals, sponges and hydroids colonise them, as a showcase of the reef’s ever-changing ecology.
SeaLink North Queensland takes great pride in holding Ecotourism Australia’s Advanced ECO Certification, which highlights a dedication to sustainable practices and authentic nature-based tourism experiences, including Orpheus Island Day Tour, whale watching, charter tours, and Outer Reef experiences, which incorporate the MOUA.

SeaLink North Queensland General Manager, Darren Spearman, shared his excitement about the collaboration: “We are honoured to work with the MOUA and these esteemed scientists to offer this unique experience,” he said.

Four ocean ‘sentinels’ are scheduled to speak at the event. Oft-called, the godfather of coral, Professor John “Charlie” Veron, joins respected coral ecologist Dr Katharina Fabricius, Molly Steer, a North Queensland marine conservationist, and Dr David Vaughan, who is renowned for his global Plant a Million Corals initiative.
