As the entry list rises for this year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, the event is also enjoying strong corporate support. Amazing Thailand – the promotional slogan of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) – was recently announced as a gold sponsor for the 36th edition, which will be held from November 30 to December 6.
“Their support is vital in enhancing the experience for our sailing community and gives our international participants a fantastic opportunity to explore the stunning beauty of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” regatta organisers stated. “We’re grateful for their trust and commitment to making this year’s regatta a memorable event for everyone involved.”
Centara Hotels & Resorts is among silver sponsors of the week-long event, which will again be held in the waters off Kata Beach.
The King’s Cup is Asia’s most famous international regatta and features keelboats, multihulls, optimists and dinghies. Disabled sailing will feature in this year’s event and be held in two-person SV14 dinghies on the same days as the main dinghy competition.
Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Rama 9 of Thailand, the event has since been held every year apart from 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. Last December, the King’s Cup made headlines as King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida became the first Royal visitors to the event.
On the last day of racing, Queen Suthida competed on Vayu THA72, as the TP52 owned by brothers Kevin and Tom Whitcraft won both of its races to finish second overall in IRC Zero. The Queen later presided over the Royal Awards Presentation, presenting awards to all the winners.
