Lagoon 38 shines in Bordeaux

SHARE

NBA champion Boris Diaw graced the private premiere of the brand’s new entry model, which will debut in public at the International Multihull Show.

A violinist kicked off the Lagoon 38 christening

Graced by a former NBA champion, a violinist and two dancers, the private premiere of the all-new Lagoon 38 sailing catamaran was a highlight of this year’s Lagoon Exclusive Days in Bordeaux from March 12-15.

Held by the Garonne river at Beneteau Group’s Construction Navale Bordeaux shipyard, dedicated to Lagoon’s 50ft-plus catamarans, the Lagoon Exclusive Days attracted over 500 guests, with clients, prospects and dealers coming from around the world.

A dancer joins the entertainment

Yacht Style attended the four-day event, which included representatives of Lagoon Asia-Pacific and dealer Asiamarine from Hong Kong, while the Europa Yachts and Tam Son Yachting dealerships attended from the Philippines and Vietnam respectively.

Displayed on land beside the new Iconic versions of the Lagoon 46 and 51, the Lagoon 38 is the new entry model for the world’s leading builder of cruising catamarans, with more than 7,300 yachts built since 1984.

An aerial silk acrobat

With the sun setting, a violinist performed in front of and then on the boat, where she was joined by a balletic dancer. Another performer then appeared from a deck hatch and went on to steal with the show with an acrobatic display using two aerial silks dangling from the forestay.

Boris Diaw – who played basketball in the NBA for 14 years and won the 2014 title with the San Antonio Spurs – graced the Lagoon 38’s private premiere as the ‘godfather’ of the boat, popping champagne. The 6ft 8in Diaw, who owns hull three of the Lagoon Seventy 7, then joined Lagoon Brand Director Thomas Gailly in encouraging the audience to ‘Always Dream Big’.

A successor of the former Lagoon 380, which sold about 900 units, the Lagoon 38 has been inspired by the new Lagoon 43 that debuted last year, with the new model also featuring naval architecture by VPLP Design, exterior design by Patrick Le Quement and interiors by Italy’s Nauta Design.

The 37ft 4in hull has an almost 22ft beam, a 4ft-plus draught and an air draught of over 60ft. The rig includes a sail area of 836sqft, comprising a 600sqft square-top mainsail and 236sqft self-tacking jib, with the option of a Code 0 (581sqft). Extended transoms enable easy boarding and can be used for easy access to the water as well as a jumping and diving platform.

A large crowd gathered for the event

On deck, the ‘In & Out’ design concept from the Lagoon 43 is replicated. As well as an aft sofa, the covered cockpit features a flexible dining area to port that can be adjoined to the indoor dining area once the sliding doors are open, creating an elongated social area for a dozen or so people.

The coachroof includes the helm station to starboard, situated opposite integrated solar panels – capable of delivering up to 1,420W – and a forward sunpad to port. A C-shaped sunpad on the foredeck is among other outdoor areas.

Like the Lagoon 43, the Lagoon 38 offers either a symmetrical four-cabin layout or a three-cabin design led by a full-length master suite in the port hull, with the bed situated forward and a bathroom with separate shower aft.

The CNB shipyard is by the Garonne

The structure of the deck and hulls of the CE-A catamaran is created by vacuum-infusion moulding, a process ensuring lighter weight, a higher quality of composite, and reduced environmental impact by the shipyard.

All-natural hemp fibre has been used instead of fiberglass on non-structural pieces, while Lagoon’s advances in bio-sourced resins and vegetal fibres are also visible. Woodwork comes from FSC-certified forests, and recycled materials are used for the standard upholstery.

As well as fuel capacity of 400 litres, the yacht can store between 300-500 litres of fresh water, while the UVOJI water purification system is installed as standard.

Thomas Gailly addresses guests at the Lagoon Exclusive Days

The world premiere of the Lagoon 38 will be held at this year’s International Multihull Show in La Grande Motte on the south coast of France from April 23-27.

Lagoon Exclusive Days guests were also able to see inside the CNB shipyard and view the progress of the brand’s upcoming flagships, the Lagoon Eighty 2 (sail) and Eighty 3 (motor), which are set to debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 9-13) and the 2026 Miami International Boat Show (February 11-15) respectively.
