Former Tesla executive John Vo has entered the luxury day boat sector with Blue Innovations Group and its eco-friendly R30.
Blue Innovations Group launches R30
Founded in 2022 by John Vo, Tesla’s former Global Head of Manufacturing, Blue Innovations Group (BIG) has launched the R30 electric boat as it seeks to “revolutionise recreational boating” with sustainable marine technology. The Florida company debuted the R30 in mid-December in St Petersburg, where Vo shared his excitement as hull one took to the water.
“The R30 was designed from scratch. The R stands for Revolution, so we decided to offer something radically different, radically better. We threw out the playbook most boatbuilders follow because if you squint your eyes at a boat show, most boats look the same,” said Vo, CEO of Blue Innovations Group.
The R30 has a semi-walkaround design
“The R30 provides the ultimate boating experience for customers with uncompromised safety, performance, style and value while being environmentally friendly. It’s a first-of-its-kind recreational boat that offers customers an unparalleled experience, combining advanced technologies and timeless styling with a silent, pollution-free propulsion system.”
Designed and manufactured in Florida, the R30 is a 30ft electric cabin cruiser that weighs 4.5 tonnes and has a beam of 10ft and a capacity for 12 passengers. Technology includes solar-charging capability (up to 2.8kW), a 221kWh battery pack and an 800hp twin-motor powertrain, with a target nominal runtime of up to 8hrs and an expected top speed of 39 knots.

As well as the solar panels integrated into the fixed hard top, there are two retractable solar panels. Both can be contained within the roof structure during navigation, then deployed fore and aft at anchor for greater solar-power generation and guest protection from the elements.
The semi-walkaround yacht’s versatility extends to its aft ‘ocean terrace’, which includes a drop-down aft platform with a submerged step as well as drop-down balconies on both sides.

The cockpit has a foldable table and adjustable facing bench sofas fore and aft. The table can be lowered and covered by cushions, while the aft backrest can fold down to create an extended island sunpad. The foredeck offers a fixed sunbathing area forward of the windscreen.
Forward of the dinette is a wet bar with a cooktop, sink and refrigerator, while the semi-enclosed twin-seat helm station includes an intuitive, integrated user interface (UI) overseeing the vessel’s controls, navigation, chart plotter, media system and more. Below is a bathroom and a forward dinette that can be converted into a double berth.
