The first Riva 102’ Corsaro Super in Hong Kong is expected to arrive in spring 2024 and is expected to be followed by another hull in spring 2025, following sales by local dealer Starship Yachts. Ferretti Group Asia Pacific confirmed the yachts are the second and third units sold in Asia, and will follow the upcoming delivery of a hull to Taiwan through Amal Yachting.

Launched last year during Riva’s 180th anniversary before its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the 102’ Corsaro Super is the successor to the 100’ Corsaro, which had its global debut in Hong Kong in April 2017.

Built at Riva’s La Spezia shipyard, the original Corsaro spearheaded the builder’s currently Flybridge series – which includes the new 82’ Diva, 90’ Argo, 110’ Dolcevita and 130’ Bellissima – and was followed by the steel-hulled 50Metri and all-aluminium 54Metri in build at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona.

Like all Riva models for the past two decades, the 102’ Corsaro Super is a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design founders Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari, and its Engineering Department.

The 16th edition of Affordable Art Fair in Singapore cements it as the most enduring international art fair in the region and rightfully so.

The art industry can be an intimidating scene where it seems a small few hold the key in dictating what the rest of the world perceives as “good” or “bad” art. This is where the Affordable Art Fair comes in helping people fall in love with art by giving them the confidence to trust their own taste and style. In doing so, they are also disrupting the business model of art and the stronghold that art dealers and critics have over the industry.

2023 sees the Affordable Art Fair maintain its presence in Singapore as the longest-standing art fair in the region. In November, the F1 Pit Building will play host to the fair, transforming itself into an immersive space where rare art meets a contemporary lifestyle. Singapore’s Affordable Art Fair holds the same ethos from the day it started – that art is not just for the elite, it is for everyone – be it an art aficionado or a budding art collector just starting their own personal collection. Affordable Art Fair is the one-stop destination to indulge, explore and elevate your senses with art of all mediums. The Fair removes the elitism known to be held in the art community by presenting artwork from contemporary oil paintings to life-sized sculptures, for every space and budget.

Why the Affordable Art Fair is a Must-Visit:

The fair showcases a plethora of artworks in an environment that is free from intimidation or judgement. The Affordable Art Fair is about celebrating art in a space that is both friendly and transparent. Transparecy is particularly applicable for the pricing as all artworks are prominently displayed with their respective prices which are under SGD15,000. 75 percent of artworks displayed are priced below SGD7,500, and a delightful selection under just SGD1,000 making it easier for everyone to find that perfect piece that speaks to both their taste and budget. What also sets the Affordable Art Fair apart from other art events are its distinctive presence within the art fair scene which is attributed to Affordable Art Fair’s unique approach to an accessible, vibrant, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages education.

The fair is also a melting pot of cultures across 81 galleries as it is comprised of 36 percent local and 64 percent international galleries allowing visitors to experience a more holistic, international collective of art and culture. These galleries are comprised of over 20 different countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, and Thailand among many others.

The renowned Art Fair also makes a crucial step in supporting local artists as, by choosing art from Affordable Art Fair, you will be directly contributing to the contemporary arts ecosystem, supporting artists’ livelihoods, alongside the galleries that champion their work. Therefore, when you purchase a ticket to the Affordable Art Fair, you get the best of both worlds. Not only do you get access to thousands of artworks all under one roof; it’s also a chance to speak to the experts and gallerists.

What To Consider When Purchasing Art

When collecting art, it’s good to expose yourself to industry connections and mingle with like-minded individuals to get a better grasp on up and coming trends, industry insights and other word-of-mouth hearsays and tips. Being on the ground, your ability to sense and indulge in the local art industry and energy gets more heightened, as opposed to appreciating it off your screen. Colours, techniques, pigments, expressions all come to life.

However, before we purchase art, it is important to understand why we are purchasing it. Would it be included in as part of a decorative switch up in your home? If so, would the piece be featured in your own private space on displayed in an open room? Style, colour, layout, dimensions are all of these are crucial component worth taking into consideration as well. Some pointers as stated by Singapore Art Fair’s Fair Director, Alan Koh are:

  • Measure up the space beforehand

  • Photograph the room and take these with you as a reminder of your décor

  • Check how different light could affect your chosen position

  • Consider if you need the artwork framed

Advice For First Time Buyers

Research is crucial. While the Affordable Art Fair is a prejudice-free space it is important to explore your options. Once inside the space, take your time understanding the different types of artworks on offer from methods, materials, colours and sizes, perhaps even listing out a personal pick of top five or top 10 selection and why you are drawn to those pieces. Next, always keep a budget in mind. If an artwork that catches your eye is over budget, that does not mean it is off limits. As Koh explains, galleries might have a smaller piece by the same artist up their sleeve – or they may offer a payment scheme to allow you to spread the cost over monthly or quarterly instalments. However, you happen to see a work of art you fall in love with but is out of your budget, keep in mind that many galleries offer a “try before you buy” scheme, where you can borrow work to view it in situ for a specified period, before your commit to that final decision.

Art and The Artist

One of the most exciting parts of collecting contemporary art is learning about established artists or discovering rising stars. Cultural background, heritage, techniques, methods as well as inspiration and motivations are important in drawing you into a piece as these build emotional ties between a collector and the artwork. Do your reseach into the artist’s background as well, what story are they saying with their work and does it inspire you? Examine the materials – pencil, charcoal and pastel drawings are both priced and presented differently as opposed to oil paintings or a bronze sculpture for instance.

Gabby Malpas, “Seafood Chowder”, 2023, mixed media on canvas display 25 x 25cm, Utterly Art

Be Open To Originality

Embrace the unconventional and the original keeping in line with the realms of your own imagination and budget in mind. Art is meant to make you think, make you feel something from within. You should not buy an artwork because you think it is what you should be buying. Instead, make sure your heart and head take equal part in your decision. Collecting art is, ultimately, about developing and learning to trust your taste and the Affordable Art Fair is a great place to start.

The third Beneteau Cup Hong Kong featured 19 boats racing in solid sailing conditions, with Easy Breezy II retaining her overall title. By Guy Nowell.

Beneteau Asia-Pacific and regional dealer Simpson Marine celebrated a day of brand camaraderie with the third annual Beneteau Cup Hong Kong. This is when every Beneteau owner in Hong Kong is invited to join in an event that includes a little light-hearted racing followed by some après-sail socials that are just as important as the on-water activity.

Beneteau Cup regattas have been a successful item in the European sailing calendar for some years, and the addition of the Hong Kong edition has been welcomed enthusiastically by local sailors.

It was a good sailing day. Warm, but not too hot. Breezy, but not overpowering. A little more sunshine would have been welcome, but let’s not be churlish. The racing part of the Beneteau Cup was organised by Aberdeen Boat Club and its Marine Services Manager, Alex Johnston, who is well experienced in this sort of thing.

From a start outside Deep Water Bay, a 12nm course left Chesterman Buoy and Castle Rock to port, a rounding mark in Tai Tam Bay to starboard, and then retracing the steps all the way back to the finish.

The breeze was moderate, but enough to be useful. It’s worth remembering that not all the sailors in this fleet are diehard racers, and there were plenty of guests on board, so 8-10 knots was just what the doctor ordered. It was ‘white sails’ all the way to the Tai Tam turning mark and Castle Rock, and spinnakers all the way home.

The nature of the course made little call for tactical decisions. Tak Chung Leung’s vintage Beneteau 47.7, Polar Star III, took line honours in just 99 minutes, ahead of Philippe Grelon’s undiluted racing machine, the Figaro Beneteau 3 Rosy Sky.

Richard Allen, Simpson Marine’s Group General Manager, skippered a new, very sporty Beneteau First 36 and was third over the line after covering some extra distance on account of an ‘unforced error’. Handicap honours went to Alfred Lau and Castor Kong’s beautifully turned-out Easy Breezy II, a Beneteau First 41 S5, having completed the distance in a splash less than two hours.

Then it was time for some après-sail. The Aberdeen Boat Club’s outstation at Middle Island is a wonderful venue for sipping a glass or two of chilled rosé, and offered quite the most magnificent charcuterie buffet that we’ve seen in a long while. The restaurant terrace is a very special space for some alfresco dining, accompanied by the race postmortem conversations at which sailors excel!

Erwan Her and Richard Allen

Erwan Her, Sales Director of Beneteau Asia-Pacific, added: “Building on the success of the previous editions, this event once again brought together our passionate community of sailors. It goes beyond mere competition; it is an opportunity to forge lasting connections and create a vibrant social community for Beneteau owners who share a deep love for sailing and the sea.

“As always, the Beneteau Cup enhances the thrill of racing in Hong Kong waters, creating unforgettable memories to be enjoyed over the year ahead.”

Allen added: “The third Beneteau Cup went a long way to cementing the reputation of these excellent boats, with a day of first-class racing and even better socials afterwards. Owners and their crews enjoyed near-perfect sailing conditions and even the occasional splash of sunshine. We’re already looking forward to the 2024 Beneteau Cup!”

Grand upgrade of Beneteau’s Swift flagship

A recent arrival in Asia, the Swift Trawler 48 is the upgraded flagship of Beneteau’s popular fast trawler-style series, with many changes inspired by the Grand Trawler 62, especially in the light, bright interior.

Almost two decades ago, Beneteau revitalised the trawler concept with the introduction of its fast Swift Trawler range. Previously, trawlers were slow, long-range cruisers with single engines and displacement hulls, but Beneteau’s versions barged onto the scene with twin inboards and semi-displacement ‘planing’ hulls that reached 20-plus knots.

The proposition was to cruise far and fast, and the idea found a lucrative market. To date, this appealing concept has resulted in the sale of about 1,800 Swift Trawler models for the French builder so it’s no surprise that Beneteau continues to refine the line, which today includes the 35, 41 Sedan and 41 Fly.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe flybridge hard top is optional

However, the series’ newest and biggest model is the Swift Trawler 48, with Asia’s first model recently arriving in Singapore through regional dealer Simpson Marine.

SWIFT BY NAME

Built on the same hull as the Swift Trawler 47, the 48 features an interior facelift and comes standard with twin 380hp Cummins diesels, although the engines can be upgraded to 425hp versions, which is what our test boat had fitted.

With four of us aboard and the fuel and water tanks about half full, we came up on plane at 16 knots and continued up to 26 knots at wide-open throttle. The gauges showed we burned 180 litres per hour, so we backed down to 18 knots at 2,500rpm and settled into a more economical 110 lph cruise.

The foredeck sunpad can fit two to three people, while a forward section can fold up to provide the backrest for a sofa

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, Cummins

For distance cruising at nine knots, you can expect a range of 600nm – almost Singapore to Phuket – although if you slow down to six knots, you can stretch your legs to nearly 1,000 miles. If you need to go far, you can do so, but if you need to outrun a storm heading back to the slip, you can do that, too.

Just like the 47, which we tested a few years back, the 48 took the day’s lumpy conditions in stride. The wheel was responsive and the turns were tight and controlled. Later, when we returned to the marina, the bow thruster came in handy as we manoeuvred back into a cosy slip.

NEW MODEL TAKES SHAPE

Many of the previous Swift Trawler 47 features have been retained on the new design. The optional hydraulic swim platform that can carry a tender on chocks and the starboard hull door integrated into the high bulwarks are still present.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsA hydraulic platform is optional, while the cockpit has one side door, an aft bench seat and slide-away flybridge stairs

Familiar features include the transom bench seat in the cockpit, the flybridge stairs that fold up against the deckhouse with the help of a foot pedal, and the foredeck sunpad, which can fold up towards the front to create a forward-facing sofa.

The starboard side deck is the only one that’s covered and is on the same level as the cockpit and saloon until steps beside the door by the helm station, while the raised port side deck is reached by three stairs in the cockpit.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe flybridge includes two L-shaped sofas with adjustable forward backrests, and an adjustable table

The flybridge layout is also recognisable and starts with a clear 5sqm area at the back, to be used by the owner as they wish, with a transverse, forward-looking wet bar fronting the aft zone.

The forward half is dominated by L-shaped settees either side of a folding teak table and the central helm seat. The forward backrests on both sofas can be pushed back to create companion seating for three people: two to port and one to starboard.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe outdoor galley is in the clear aft area of the flybridge

New on each side of the aft exterior are fashion plates with the Beneteau seahorse logo. This addition copies the feature on the Grand Trawler 62, Beneteau’s flagship created to take the Swift Trawler concept to a new size range. The logo is also on the starboard acrylic door, which is designed to cut the wind that shoots down the side deck to the aft cockpit.

REFRESHED INTERIOR

Most of the changes between the Swift Trawler 47 and 48 are on the inside, with notably improved ergonomics and traffic flow in the interior, which is offered in Alpi Oak or Alpi Teak.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsForward view of the aft galley and starboard counter, which both offer masses of storage

First, the helm has been moved from the centreline position to starboard. The dash holds either twin nine-inch or 12-inch Raymarine touchscreen displays, while there’s also a large, destroyer-style wheel plus a joystick and throttles outboard.

A sliding side door (with a full screen) leads to the deck directly across from the bulwark door, so the driver can quickly hop off to manage dock lines. A third command station with joystick is an option in the cockpit. It may be a worthwhile addition for docking stern-to where the visibility aft is better.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsAft view of the saloon, which includes a swivel helm seat and side door to starboard, opposite a raised dinette to port

By moving the lower helm from the middle to the side of the boat, Beneteau opened the saloon and created more room for a C-shaped dinette to port where the sofa serves as companion seating to the helm.

This ‘re-imagining’ of the saloon layout has improved the use of space and allows for a better flow inside. The galley was also moved aft, so drinks, snacks and meals can be more easily served to both the cockpit and the flybridge. Refrigeration has been increased to nine cubic feet (255 litres) and the countertops are now Corian, just as they are on the Grand Trawler 62.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe saloon table can fold out far enough for the helm seat to join dinner time

There’s a choice of an induction cooktop or a propane stove, and the focus on entertaining has been enhanced with the addition of a drinkware cabinet, an icemaker and a 23-bottle wine fridge.

Not much has changed on the accommodation below deck. It’s still a three-cabin, two-head layout, with the en-suite owner’s cabin in the bow. Small but thoughtful improvements now include increased stowage space in the two guest cabins, the addition of en-suite access to the shared bathroom from the port cabin, and an option for a washer/dryer.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe dinette can convert to a bed with privacy curtains

And if more berths are needed, the sofa in the saloon can convert to a double berth, with wrap-around privacy curtains included!

IMPROVING ON A GOOD THING

The 48 can move quickly from port to port, cruise slowly across seas or simply serve as an ideal waterfront condo with all the amenities.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, 48, Zuzana Prochazka, Sedan, Singapore, Simpson Marine, Phuket, Grand Trawler 62, Raymarine, CumminsThe lower deck’s three cabins include the owner’s suite in the bow

The model builds on its predecessor’s successes in two ways: it benefits from a refreshed, more modern interior that works better for today’s cruiser, and she enjoys luxury features that have trickled down from the flagship Grand Trawler 62, also brought to Asia by Simpson Marine.

To create the Swift Trawler 48, Beneteau optimised an already popular model using owner and dealer feedback, so enhancing their fast trawler heritage. In short, they made a proven design even better.

Cayago Asia Pacific has announced three new Seabob dealers in Asia, appointing Motor Field in Thailand, Supreme Yachts in Taiwan and Wuxi-based Global Network, which joins the brand’s dealers in China. The dealers join an existing Seabob network including Ride2X Power Sports based in Sanya on China’s Hainan Island, Smooth Marine in Hong Kong and La Marca Marine in Singapore.

Cayago, the German company that created and produces the Seabob water scooter, established its Asia-Pacific operation earlier this year, setting up a base in Singapore and supporting increased activity in the region.

Our priority is choosing partners that align with our mission to provide quality, luxury, and excitement, and I can definitely say we chose the right partners.”

This year, Cayago achieved a milestone in the Maldives, where it partners with Waterproof Sports and now has over 300 Seabobs operating in a variety of high-end resorts throughout the South Asian archipelago.

In Qatar in October, local dealer Sports Gate debuted the new Reptile Silver and Reptile Gold Seabob designs at TheArsenale’s new showroom in the Doha Design District.

Over in the US, Seabob America’s activities included organising a Seabob racing event in Sebring, Florida, as part of September’s third leg of this year’s MotoSurf Games series, further exposing Seabob to motorised surfboarding and other watersport enthusiasts.

The marine e-mobility pioneer has started its first course at the Torqeedo Academy, which will also roll out informative and educational material online.

Torqeedo recently launched the Torqeedo Academy as the electric motor manufacturer hosted the first in-person training for international sales and service partners in the company’s headquarters in Wessling, Germany. The curriculum includes design, installation, commissioning and service for both private use and commercial applications.

Stefan Hirzinger has been appointed to lead the Academy and brings three decades of expertise in technical training development in the solar and electric-vehicle industries. ‘Training Future Experts’ is the Academy’s slogan and the inaugural course for employees around the world has enjoyed strong participation.

“The first training for service partners is already more than full. In fact, we’ve almost doubled our expected registrations,” Hirzinger said. “It’s gratifying to see the excitement and energy of our service partners about the opportunity to train at the Torqeedo Academy. They are our front lines, so their education and support are key to ensuring a top-notch user experience.”

Fabian Bez, Torqeedo’s CEO (click for interview), added: “The goal of our new Torqeedo Academy is to train all our partners worldwide, so we make sure our best-in-class standard is met within the market.

“Improvements in supporting our partner network are key to a completely new customer experience. Our goal is not only to satisfy but to delight Torqeedo owners from the moment they decide to electrify their boat through the entire ownership experience.”

As well as technical training in person for the company’s service network, the Academy will later offer access to online content hosted on the Torqeedo website for product owners, industry partners and the public. As well as an overview of Torqeedo products, the content will address a wide range of sustainable boating topics and practices.

Bez said: “The Torqeedo Academy aims to educate, empower and inspire the electric boating community. As the industry leader, with more than 18 years of marine e-mobility experience, we’re uniquely qualified to share compelling, useful electrification content.

We aim to create a knowledge hub and community of people leading the way towards a more sustainable boating industry.”

Sunreef Yachts has been commissioned to build a hybrid Ultima 88 powercat for Tim Ciasulli, the former powerboat racer and multiple world record holder. Designed in-house by Sunreef, the sleek 88-footer with a 30ft beam is the largest model in the Polish builder’s new Ultima series of power catamarans, which also includes 44, 55 and 77 models.

Ciasulli is a serial yacht owner, having owned five monohull superyachts, and the American made headlines in 2021 as the owner of the first Benetti Oasis 40M, Rebeca, named after his wife. However, having raced powercats for much of his life, he has now ordered his first multihull, which offers 4,166sqft of living space across three levels.

Ciasulli said: “Who else builds a yacht that has almost 400sqm of living area where you can cruise responsibly, economically and sustainably on solar-powered electric motors and go 35mph on traditional engines when you need to? I’m thrilled to be a part of this game-changing exciting project where I can have both speed and sustainability on a huge platform!”

One of the yacht’s notable features is a walkaround ‘ocean lounge’, where the large, curved swim platform can connect to two opening bulwarks and offer easy access to water toys.

Lenny, a new Beneteau First 44 Performance owned by Charles-Etienne Devanneaux, has arrived in Sydney following a successful journey from Hawaii, where the yacht had completed the biennial Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac). Lenny’s upcoming schedule includes the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starting on December 26.

An experienced ocean racer, Devanneaux is the founder and CEO of Naos Yachts, the Beneteau dealership in California. Devanneaux and his crew led Lenny to second place in Division 7 – Boatswain Locker (ORR Transpac) in this year’s Transpac, a three-start 2,225nm race from San Pedro in California to Diamond Head in Hawaii that was held from late June to mid-July.

From Hawaii, Lenny and crew made stopovers in Fiji and New Caledonia, and faced challenging weather conditions including 40-knot-plus winds before reaching Sydney on October 20. With the crew encountering minimal technical issues throughout the voyage, Devanneaux was full of praise for the yacht, highlighting its safety features along with its well-designed deck and cockpit.

Currently docked at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), Lenny has been lined up for multiple events in the coming month including the Beneteau Cup Sydney at CYCA on October 27.

Both the First 36 and First 44 sailing yachts debuted at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.
